In "The Circus, and Other Essays and Fugitive Pieces," Joyce Kilmer presents a captivating collection that traverses the realms of observation, reflection, and poetic expression. The essays embody Kilmer's signature lyrical style, often blending prose with poetic insights, revealing his deep appreciation for the beauty of everyday life. Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century America, these pieces capture the zeitgeist of a rapidly changing society while exploring timeless themes such as the interplay of art and nature, the human experience, and life's fleeting moments. Kilmer, an acclaimed poet and essayist, was profoundly influenced by his experiences in both urban and pastoral settings, as well as by his strong Catholic faith and commitment to social issues. Known primarily for his poignant poem "Trees," he frequently sought to illuminate the sacred in the mundane, which is evident throughout this collection. His unique perspective as a literary figure in a period marked by burgeoning modernism allows readers to appreciate his quest for beauty amidst chaos. This collection is recommended for readers who desire a reflective journey through vibrant prose that evokes emotion and contemplation. Kilmer's ability to harmonize thought-provoking themes with his poetic sensibility renders this book an essential read for both enthusiasts of early American literature and those seeking to rekindle their connection with the world around them.

Milwaukee was home to the Great Circus Parade for almost 30 years. Beginning in 1963 and continuing until 1972, the parade became an annual tradition, except in 1967 when the event was cancelled because of civil unrest. Revived on a smaller scale in 1980, the parade traveled between Baraboo and Chicago until it returned to Milwaukee in 1985. Each year, it grew in size and scope, gaining national prominence. The old-fashioned circus parade became an event of mammoth proportions, requiring an army of volunteers working behind the scenes.

Quantum Entanglement Explained to All Schr?dinger's cat, collapses, superpositions, non-locality and all the other attractions of the great circus of modern physics.【電子書籍】[ Bruno Del Medico ]

|

"Quantum physics is a bit like Alice stepping into the mirror: physically it is just as real as our everyday reality but, at the same time it is upside down, it is twisted."(Niels Boh, theoretical physicist)

In the realm of quantum physics, extraordinary creatures that challenge our classical conception of the material world are well and truly present. As in a magical garden, we come across a variety of entities that behave so strangely and unintuitively that they seem to be true wonders of nature.

One of the first strange animals we encounter is surely the famous Schr?dinger's Cat, a paradoxical creature that is in a state of "quantum superposition" and is simultaneously alive and dead until it is "observed."

Another extraordinary being is undoubtedly Entanglement, a kind of cowboy who throws a special lasso capable of instantly binding two particles billions of miles apart, making their properties inextricably intertwined.

The Two-Slit Barrier is a strange animal that has two mouths capable of swallowing the same morsel and raises questions about the quirky behavior of matter and the extraordinary duality that characterizes quantum entities.

And what about the "Partondas," mutant beings capable of alternately taking on contrasting aspects?

Not to mention the "Quantollassii," who like to baffle the hunter by presenting themselves in the form of multitudes as if in a game of mirrors, only to reveal their uniqueness when cornered.

In conclusion, we used this tongue-in-cheek introduction to present a quantum bestiary as if it were a game, but such it is not. On the contrary, behind the game lies a fascinating world, populated by real if mysterious creatures, creatures that defy conventional logic and push us to explore the boundaries of our understanding. Through these extraordinary entities, we can peer into the abyss of the infinitely small and contemplate the wonder and complexity of the secret fabric of the universe.

If we seek to understand entanglement, we must accept the assumption that there is no absolute separation between things, even if they are spatially distant. Experiments such as those conducted by Alain Aspect have shown that particles can remain entangled, regardless of the distance between them.

But what is the connection between our daily lives and this strange quantum reality? Well, the truth is that quantum entanglement affects everything around us, even if we are not aware of it. As physicist Richard Feynman once said, "Don't say that quantum entanglement doesn't interest you, because you live it, even if you can't explain it."

As we continue to lead our ordinary lives, it is important to remember that we are part of a mysterious and interconnected universe. Quantum entanglement invites us to explore new perspectives, to reconsider our beliefs about reality, and to embrace the idea that, ultimately, we are all linked by an invisible connection that unites the very fabric of the universe.

An Amazing Circus of Phonograms-Act 1 An excellent resource book for teachers and parents【電子書籍】[ Mary Jo Nyssen ]

Teaching children to read is less about making them memorize rules and more about giving them the tools they need to sound out and spell any word they encounter. By using a multisensory phonics method, you can break the code of reading by introducing your child to the seventy phonograms of the English language. But, as author and grandmother Mary Jo Nyssen knows full well, there is a secret ingredient that is essential to the mix: humor!

An Amazing Circus of Phonograms: Act I introduces children to twenty-two phonograms, all of which are made of two or more letters. Rather than simply list them off, Nyssen weaves the information into silly stories featuring colorful illustrations.

For example, as kids read the comical tales of Countess Mouse’s escape, Courtney Cat’s poultry, Louis Cougar’s soup, and Douglas and his mischievous cousin, they will discover that the astounding letter duo “ou” can make four separate sounds.

Take your child on a learning adventure you’ll both enjoy, and watch as your young reader begins to grasp how to unlock the mystery of the English language.

Buckskin Mose, Or, Life from the Lakes to the Pacific As Actor, Circus-rider, Detective, Ranger, Gold-digger, Indian Scout, and Guide【電子書籍】[ George A. Perrie ]

"Captain Perrie, who was known to his contemporaries as 'Buckskin Mose,' wrote an account of his adventures as an Indian scout under the title 'Buckskin Mose---or Life from the Lakes to the Pacific.'" -Santa Rosa Republican, Sept. 27, 1938

"Buckskin Mose reported the discovery of horse thieves who were expelled from his wagon train." -The Schuyler Sun, Feb. 26, 2004

"A curious mixture of desperate exploits and sentiment, one of the singular characters that belong to the past." - Bibliography of the History of California (1914)

"Buckskin Mose is a plain and truthful, but very interesting, account of life and adventure in the far West." -The Home Journal

"He picked up all the stories about the Indian fights that had taken place in this section." - Fairfield's Pioneer History of Lassen County, California (1916)

Known as "Buckskin Mose" by the Pah-utes, George Perrie (1811-1879) was an actor, trapper, scout, gold-digger, Ranger, detective, circus-rider, and guide. His life, very unlike that of most readers, was one of plenty of change and adventure, having been spent as a wanderer on the western frontier of the North American continent.

As detailed in his 1873 book "Buckskin Mose," much of the author's adventure had its place among the mines and Native Americans of Nevada and the country east of the Rocky Mountains. His observations of the Indians and the effects on them of the policy pursued by the Government give a value to the book beyond its interest as a narrative.

In describing his time as a Pinkerton detective in frontier Wisconsin, Perrie writes:

"In those days, in the West, justice was far shorter and sharper than it has recently been in New York. There was more pride in the detection of crime, and considerably readier justice in its punishment. Red-handed murder had especially little chance of escaping the prompt retribution of the Law, and it will, I think, be granted by the inhabitants of the metropolis that the consequent fear was a tolerably fair degree of preservation for human life, considering the character of the various elements from which life in that portion of the States was then composed."

In describing his capture by a band of Cheyennes near Laramie, Perrie notes:

"My desperate struggles were in vain. I was torn from my horse, and in a few moments more found myself weaponless, with my arms pinioned behind me, and lashed on the back of one of their ponies. The animal was then turned loose, and followed with whoop and yell by the savages as if they had been nothing else than a band of devils. The Cheyenne who was probably their chief had appropriated my horse. How madly I wished that Charlie would throw the red demon as he galloped after me, shouting and whooping like an incarnate fiend."

Another time he was captured by Flat-head braves near Walla Walla who "subjected me to more horrible torture than the mind of the white could conceive without personal experience."

The award-winning zookeeper and author of Smiling Bears shares her account of rescuing and rehabilitating a bear held in a Caribbean circus.
When a nineteen-year-old female polar bear named Barle is rescued from the inhumane conditions of a circus in the Caribbean and flown to safety in Detroit, zookeeper Else Poulsenーrenowned throughout the world for her work rehabilitating abused bearsーis on hand to meet her and help her on the road to recovery and self-discovery. Thus begins Barle's gradual introduction into the world of polar bears. Slowly she forges relationships with the other bears in the zoo and eventually mates with a young male and successfully raises a cub. By living in a caring, enriched environment focused on her welfare, Barle is able to recover from the trauma she had suffered at the circus and develop skills that are important to thriving as a polar bear. As Poulsen documents, however, not all captive bears are so fortunate. Augmented with black-and-white photographs, Barle's Story provides a rich and moving portrayal of a remarkable bear and of the author's inspiring work to help her discover her true polar bear ways.
Praise for Barle's Story
"This intelligent, stark, and gently humorous book makes one think that if all animals were listened to in the way that…Poulsen listens to bears, our children would inherit an infinitely kinder and safer world that the one they enjoy now." ーDr. Jill Robinson MBE, founder and CEO, Animals Asia Foundation
"At once deeply heart-wrenching, heart-warming, and heartful.
