Beyond Global Warming How Numerical Models Revealed the Secrets of Climate Change【電子書籍】[ Syukuro Manabe ]
|

From Nobel Prize winner Syukuro Manabe and Anthony Broccoli, a definitive account of how we have come to understand the fundamental processes behind global warming

Syukuro Manabe is perhaps the leading pioneer of modern climate modeling. Beyond Global Warming is his compelling firsthand account of how the scientific community came to understand the human causes of climate change, and how numerical models using the world’s most powerful computers have been instrumental to these vital discoveries.

Joined by atmospheric scientist Anthony Broccoli, Manabe shows how climate models have been used as virtual laboratories for examining the complex planetary interactions of atmosphere, ocean, and land. Manabe and Broccoli use these studies as the basis for a broader discussion of human-induced global warmingーand what the future may hold for a warming planet. They tell the stories of early trailblazers such as Svante Arrhenius, the legendary Swedish scientist who created the first climate model of Earth more than a century ago, and they provide rare insights into Manabe’s own groundbreaking work over the past five decades. Expertly walking readers through key breakthroughs, they explain why increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide has caused temperatures to rise in the troposphere yet fall in the stratosphere, why the warming of the planet’s surface differs by hemisphere, why drought is becoming more frequent in arid regions despite the global increase in precipitation, and much more.

Authoritative and illuminating, Beyond Global Warming is an invaluable insider’s look at some of today’s most cutting-edge Earth science, and a rare window into a brilliant scientific mind.

We're sure. It's bad. But we can fix it. After speaking to the international public for close to fifteen years about sustainability, climate scientist Dr. Nicholas realized that concerned people were getting the wrong message about the climate crisis. Yes, companies and governments are hugely responsible for the mess we're in. But individuals CAN effect real, significant, and lasting change to solve this problem. Nicholas explores finding purpose in a warming world, combining her scientific expertise and her lived, personal experience in a way that seems fresh and deeply urgent: Agonizing over the climate costs of visiting loved ones overseas, how to find low-carbon love on Tinder, and even exploring her complicated family legacy involving supermarket turkeys. In her astonishing, bestselling book Under the Sky We Make, Nicholas does for climate science what Michael Pollan did more than a decade ago for the food on our plate: offering a hopeful, clear-eyed, and somehow also hilarious guide to effecting real change, starting in our own lives. Saving ourselves from climate apocalypse will require radical shifts within each of us, to effect real change in our society and culture. But it can be done. It requires, Dr. Nicholas argues, belief in our own agency and value, alongside a deep understanding that no one will ever hand us power--we're going to have to seize it for ourselves.

If he were to look for the first blueberry flowers in Concord today, mid-May would be too late. In the 160 years since Thoreau's writings, warming temperatures have pushed blueberry flowering three weeks earlier, and in 2012, following a winter and spring of record-breaking warmth, blueberries began flowering on April 1--six weeks earlier than in Thoreau's time. The climate around Thoreau's beloved Walden Pond is changing, with visible ecological consequences. In Walden Warming, Richard B. Primack uses Thoreau and Walden, icons of the conservation movement, to track the effects of a warming climate on Concord's plants and animals. Under the attentive eyes of Primack, the notes that Thoreau made years ago are transformed from charming observations into scientific data sets. Primack finds that many wildflower species that Thoreau observed--including familiar groups such as irises, asters, and lilies--have declined in abundance or have disappeared from Concord. Primack also describes how warming temperatures have altered other aspects of Thoreau's Concord, from the dates when ice departs from Walden Pond in late winter, to the arrival of birds in the spring, to the populations of fish, salamanders, and butterflies that live in the woodlands, river meadows, and ponds. Primack demonstrates that climate change is already here, and it is affecting not just Walden Pond but many other places in Concord and the surrounding region. Although we need to continue pressuring our political leaders to take action, Primack urges us each to heed the advice Thoreau offers in Walden: to "live simply and wisely." In the process, we can each minimize our own contributions to our warming climate.

If your anxiety about global warming is dominated by fears of sea-level rise, you are barely scratching the surface of what terrors are possible--food shortages, refugee emergencies, climate wars and economic devastation. An "epoch-defining book" (The Guardian) and "this generation's Silent Spring" (The Washington Post), The Uninhabitable Earth is both a travelogue of the near future and a meditation on how that future will look to those living through it--the ways that warming promises to transform global politics, the meaning of technology and nature in the modern world, the sustainability of capitalism and the trajectory of human progress. The Uninhabitable Earth is also an impassioned call to action. For just as the world was brought to the brink of catastrophe within the span of a lifetime, the responsibility to avoid it now belongs to a single generation--today's. LONGLISTED FOR THE PEN/E.O. WILSON LITERARY SCIENCE WRITING AWARD "The Uninhabitable Earth is the most terrifying book I have ever read. Its subject is climate change, and its method is scientific, but its mode is Old Testament. The book is a meticulously documented, white-knuckled tour through the cascading catastrophes that will soon engulf our warming planet."--Farhad Manjoo, The New York Times"Riveting. . . . Some readers will find Mr. Wallace-Wells's outline of possible futures alarmist. He is indeed alarmed. You should be, too."--The Economist "Potent and evocative. . . . Wallace-Wells has resolved to offer something other than the standard narrative of climate change. . . . He avoids the 'eerily banal language of climatology' in favor of lush, rolling prose."--Jennifer Szalai, The New York Times "The book has potential to be this generation's Silent Spring."--The Washington Post "The Uninhabitable Earth, which has become a best seller, taps into the underlying emotion of the day: fear. . . . I encourage people to read this book."--Alan Weisman, The New York Review of Books

Baobab & Marula New Solutions to Global Warming and Food Security【電子書籍】[ Arinola Adefila (ed.) ]
|

Two iconic trees might be more important for food security and preventing disastrous global warming than any other species growing on our home planet.

Baobab and marula could be grown sparsely on vast areas without changing the existing land-use patterns. They can become large trees in arid conditions, where nothing else grows well. They cannot burn in a forest fire. They produce large amounts of popular and nutritious food, that is already being used in numerous health-benefitting products. Dried marula stones have higher heat value than coal.

In the articles of Baobab & Marula some of the world’s leading baobab and marula researchers outline what new science has revealed about the nutritional and health impacts of products based on these two trees. They provide an outlook on the vast cultural significance of the two species an assess their global economic potential. They highlight what should urgently be done to conserve their genetic diversity.

The book also argues for domestication of the two species. African continent is immensely rich in biodiversity, but even the most promising African plants have often been neglected by plant breeders. The best-known exception is the African oil palm which is already producing almost 40 per cent of the world’s food oil, using nine times less land than competing oil crops. Domestication of baobab and marula might achieve equally impressive results.

Baobab & Marula has been compiled by the Baorula Network, a coalition of scientists and activists promoting neglected African tree species as an important partial solution to the world’s most pressing problems.

The Tragedy Of Global Warming - A Short Term Solution Using Electrostatic Precipitators【電子書籍】[ Michael B. Blumenthal ]
|

1.0 Introduction ? A Solution Since 1907
The complete (technical) solution to the Climate Change crisis exists now!
It has in fact existed since 1907 ー i.e., it is possible to run coal-fired power stations and other air-borne effluent-producing industries without shutting them down ー i.e., with zero pollution coming out of their chimney stacks.
It is an inexplicable anomaly ー that for over a century, nobody has responded to the fact that the technical solution to our present crises of catastrophic climate change and global warming was registered as a patent by Dr. Frederick G. Cottrell in 1907, from an idea conceived by M. Hohlfeld in 1824.
Dr. Cottrell used the proceeds of his invention ー the Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) ー to establish the Research Corporation in 1912, which helps university researchers bring their inventions to market.
There are already 74 manufacturers of ESPs in the U.S. ー proving this technology is mature, scalable, and ready for mass adoption.

2.0 Part One ? The Machine
The Electrostatic Precipitator , or ESPs , as they are referred to in the industry, consist simply of a large steel box ー very similar to modern shipping containers.
Inside, rows of thin vertical wires are interspersed by large, vertically oriented metal plates.
As polluted air flows through the unit, a high-voltage electric field ionizes smoke and ash particles ー causing them to stick onto the plates.
After a set time, the collected waste drops to the bottom and is removed by truck ー none of it ever reaches the atmosphere.

Senator Al Gore once reported that more than 90 million tons of pollutants enter the atmosphere every day worldwide ー up from 70 million tons when he first produced "An Inconvenient Truth."
Shortly thereafter came Leonardo DiCaprio's presentation, "The Eleventh Hour," which graphically depicted the actual environmental damage caused by unchecked emissions.

Clearly, NOBODY IS LISTENING!

Returning again to the subject of ESPs ー they have been designed and developed for all types of airborne effluent applications.
Readers interested in procurement should consult trade directories like ThomasNet , Yellow Pages , or Environmental Business International ー or attend environmental equipment expos.

3.0 Part Two ? Lessons Learned from the 2008 Beijing Olympics
A report evaluating Beijing's air quality efforts during the Olympics (May 13, 2011) uses China's official Air Pollution Index (API) data and satellite-derived Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) measurements.
Beijing shut down many heavy-industry factories before the Games.
Vehicle traffic was reduced by half using an odd-even license plate policy.
Some have questioned the veracity of Beijing's claims of improved air quality during the Olympic period.
However, research by Chen et al. at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) confirmed real improvements via satellite data.
They showed that the average API dropped from 109.01 (not a "blue-sky day") to 76.69 (a blue-sky day) during the event.

4.0 Part Three ? Legal Enforcement Based on USNRC Model
Three basic documents found on the USNRC website provide a foundation:
USNRC Enforcement Policy (2012)
USNRC Enforcement Manual
NRC Inspection Manual
These documents form the basis for Congress to consider when creating a comprehensive legal framework to regulate polluting industries and compel them to adopt ESP technology.

Author Bio
Michael B. Blumenthal
B.Sc. Mechanical Engineering, University of the Witwatersrand (WITS), Johannesburg, South Africa.

An independent researcher and advocate for practical, short-term climate solutions. Michael focuses on underutilized technologies with immediate environmental impact ー particularly the use of Electrostatic Precipitators (ESPs) to reduce industrial emissions.

Deep Swarm and Evolution for Generative Artificial Intelligence【電子書籍】[ Hitoshi Iba ]
|

This book provides theoretical and practical knowledge about swarm and evolutionary approach of generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs). The development of such tools contributes to better optimizing methodologies with the integration of several machinelearning and deep learning techniques. In particular, it discusses how the “emergence” concept can contribute to the improvement of AI.The book aims to model human cognitive f unction in terms of “emergence” and to explain the feasibility of AI. To this end, it focuses on human perceptions of “utility.” It describes the emergence of various cognitive errors, and irrational behaviours in the multiobjective situations. It also reviews the cognitive differences and similarities between humans and LLMs. Such studies are important when applying LLMs to real-world tasks that involve human cognition, e.g., financial engineering and market issues.

The book describes the intelligent behaviour of living organisms. This is to clarify how to achieve AI in the direction of artificial life. It describes sexual selection, which is a well-known natural phenomenon that troubled Darwin, i.e., why evolutionarily useless items evolved such as peacock feathers and moose antlers etc. The book shows how sexual selection is extended as “novelty search” for the application of generative AI, i.e., the image generation with diffusion model. Real-world applications are emphasised. Empirical examples from real-world data show how the concept of deep swarm and evolution is successfully applied when addressing tasks from such recent fields as robotics, e-commerce Web Shop and image generation etc.

Global warming policy in Japan and Britain Interactions between institutions and issue characteristics【電子書籍】[ Shizuka Oshitani ]
|

This is the first book to attempt a systematic comparison of Japanese and British climate policy and politics, and is now available in paperback. Focusing on institutional contrasts between Japan and Britain in terms of corporatist or pluralist characteristics of government-industry relations and decision-making and implementation styles, the book examines how and to what extent institutions explain climate policy in Japan and Britain. In doing this, the book explores how climate policy is shaped by the interplay of nationally specific institutional factors and universal constraints on actors, which emanate from characteristics of the global warming problem itself. It also considers how corporatist institutional characteristics may make a difference in attaining sustainable development. Overall this book provides a new set of comparisons of climate policy and new frameworks of analysis, which could be built on in future research on cross-national climate policy analysis.

Virginia Climate Fever How Global Warming Will Transform Our Cities, Shorelines, and Forests【電子書籍】[ Stephen Nash ]
|

Climate disruption is often discussed on a global scale, affording many a degree of detachment from what is happening in their own backyards. Yet the consequences of global warming are of an increasingly acute and serious nature.

In Virginia Climate Fever, environmental journalist Stephen Nash brings home the threat of climate change to the state of Virginia. Weaving together a compelling mix of data and conversations with both respected scientists and Virginians most immediately at risk from global warming’s effects, the author details how Virginia’s climate has already begun to change. In engaging prose and layman’s terms, Nash argues that alteration in the environment will affect not only the state’s cities but also hundreds of square miles of urban and natural coastal areas, the 60 percent of the state that is forested, the Chesapeake Bay, and the near Atlantic, with accompanying threats such as the potential spread of infectious disease. The narrative offers striking descriptions of the vulnerabilities of the state’s many beautiful natural areas, around which much of its tourism industry is built.

While remaining respectful of the controversy around global warming, Nash allows the research to speak for itself. In doing so, he offers a practical approach to and urgent warning about the impending impact of climate change in Virginia.

A Crisis like No Other: Understanding and Defeating Global Warming - Second Edition【電子書籍】[ Robert De Saro ]
|

A Crisis Like No Other: Understanding and Defeating Global Warming couples engaging and creative storytelling with accurate details to explain global warming. It covers both the technical and human issues of global warming by addressing what's causing global warming, and why people don’t believe it exists. The book tells readers how to convince others that global warming is not only real, but life-threatening, and offers a clearly laid out path to solve it. The book is accurate and carefully researched, drawing on the author's thirty years studying the science of global warming, and the human psyche that surrounds it.

The author breaks down the subject into four parts, which can be thought of as four mini-books in one. The first part covers the psychology of global warming denial, how to defend ourselves against its lies and fake news, and how to convince others of global warming’s grave harm. The second part describes exactly what global warming is. The third answers the question what makes us so sure? Finally, the last part provides a road map showing us how to defeat global warming.

This book is comprehensive, fast paced, and easily accessible to readers from all walks of life. It provides an overview of everything one needs to know about global warming and, as such, is an excellent survey of global warming topics. In addition to being an easy and enjoyable read for the general public, A Crisis Like No Other: Understanding and Defeating Global Warming serves as a handy primer on climate change for environmental science classes.

Winter A memoir of warmth and wonder from one of Scotland's best-loved writers【電子書籍】[ Val McDermid ]

'A warm hug of a book... like sitting by a roaring winter fire' JACKIE KAY

Winter is the time to snuggle indoors without guilt; to curl up on the sofa with a good book or a box set, a hot drink or a wee whisky to hand.

Val McDermid has always had a soft spot for winter: the bitter clarity of a crisp cold day, the vivid skies over the Firth of Forth, the crunch of frost on fallen leaves and the chance to be enveloped in big jumpers and thick socks.

In Winter, she takes us on an adventure through the season, from the frosty streets of Edinburgh to the windblown Scottish coast, from Bonfire Night and Christmas to Burns Night and Up Helly Aa. She remembers winters from childhood, the thrill of whizzing over a frozen lake on skates, carving a 'neep' (swede) for Halloween and being taken to see her first real Christmas tree in the town square, lights twinkling bravely in the dark Scottish winter night.

Above all, she shows us that winter is a time of rest, retreat and creativity, for scribbling in notebooks and settling in beside the fire. This is a charming and cosy celebration of the winter season from one of Scotland best-loved writers.

Elemental: How We Will Live on a Warming Planet The first comprehensive account of the geopolitics of climate change【電子書籍】[ Arthur Snell ]
|

With over 30 years' experience in conflict zones and fragile states, Arthur Snell travels from the heat of the Sahel to the Arctic Circle to show how climate change is coinciding with a breakdown in geopolitical order, increasing conflict and economic crises.

Within our lifetimes, rising temperatures, sea levels and scarcity will inevitably drive both conflict and mass migration globally. Natural disasters and the battle for rare minerals that are essential to clean energy will shake the established world order to its core within this century. When the rain wrecks India's ability to grow rice, the heat makes building impossible in Saudi Arabia, wildfires rage through America's most populated regions, and in Russia huge areas of highly fertile land are exposed by the melting ice, what will living on a warmer planet actually look like?

Here, for the very first time, historian and former British diplomat Arthur Snell delivers a comprehensive account of the geopolitics of climate change. Through four sections - Earth, Air, Fire and Water - Elemental blends reportage with analysis and interviews with key experts, policymakers and politicians, to reveal the turbulent future we face - and the choices we need to make to avert disaster.
