Atlantic's Last Stop Courage, Folly, and Lies in the White Star Line's Worst Disaster Before Titanic【電子書籍】[ Bob Chaulk ]

In the pre-dawn hours of April 1, 1873ーas the lookouts looked, the steersman steered, and the captain sleptーsomething was happening to the SS Atlantic. The tide had quietly carried the White Star Line ocean liner twelve miles off course, and land was closer than anybody realizedーor was willing to believe. The wreck of the SS Atlantic would become the worst transatlantic passenger ship disaster before Titanic, and although it happened almost 150 years ago, there are still many unanswered questions. That is changing. Ten years after co-authoring the most celebrated book to date on Nova Scotia's worst shipwreck, author Bob Chaulk has uncovered never-reported information that answers the question historians have been grappling with for over a century: why a state-of-the-art steamship, with all equipment in perfect working order, in good weather, and commanded by officers of the world's leading seafaring nation, ended up striking rock outside Halifax and sinking, resulting in some 550 deaths. Over a five-year period, Chaulk tracked down many descendants of those on the scene and aboard the ship, patiently piecing their stories together to reveal a shocking conclusion. This richly illustrated work, featuring maps and colour photos, includes many firsthand accounts from passengers, crew, officers, and local rescue people.

Olympic Titanic Britannic The anatomy and evolution of the Olympic Class【電子書籍】[ Simon Mills ]

The Titanic. The Britannic. The Olympic. They are some of the most famous ships in history, but for the wrong reasons.

The Olympic Class liners were conceived as the largest, grandest ships ever to set sail. Of the three ships built, the first only lost the record for being the largest because she was beaten by the second, and they were both beaten by the third. The class was meant to secure the White Star Line's reputation as the greatest shipping company on earth. Instead, with the loss of both the Titanic and the Britannic in their first year of service, it guaranteed White Star's infamy.

This unique book tells the extraordinary story of these three extraordinary ships from the bottom up, starting with their conception and construction (and later their modification) and following their very different careers. Behind the technical details of these magnificent ships lies a tragic human story ? not just of the lives lost aboard the Titanic and Britannic, but of the designers pushing the limits beyond what was actually possible, engineers unable to prepare for every twist of fate, and ship owners and crew who truly believed a ship could be unsinkable.

This fascinating story is told with rare photographs, new computer-generated recreations of the ships, and unique wreck images that explore how well the ships were designed and built. Simon Mills offers unparalleled access to shipbuilders Harland & Wolff's specification book for the Olympic Class, including original blueprints and - being made widely available for the first time - large fold-out technical drawings showing how these extensive plans were meant to be seen.

Goebbels-The Evil Within and the Titanic Lie【電子書籍】[ I D Oppenhiem ]

This short and concise history (approx 5,000 words) deals in part with an horrific ending to a ship once used as a 'replica' of the ship RMS Titanic for the making of the later banned Nazi propaganda movie known generally as Titanic 1943.

It also covers some history surrounding the man ultimately responsible, not just for the making of the film, but of the fate of the thousands on board this same ship during its last moments.

The words 'Titanic Lie' are intended in this instance to cover not just this film, but also to a far greater degree, the actions and deeds perpetrated using the political banner as a legitimate weapon against dignity, respect, and humanitarian rights of others, and the man who signed himself as 'Herr Doktor' whose lasting legacy could only be one of hate.

Written as an introduction to this subject, the author has included some of the major influences affecting the life of Goebbels which may have contributed to his views towards other races and likewise may have contributed to his eagerness to emerge superior from the masses. But it should also be remembered that Goebbels was quick to change direction should this suit his purpose and was indeed a master of manipulation and opportunism.

The reader is left to consider whether indeed it was his ignorance which led him on this path or some other weakness that allowed him to become the monster he became.

A Titanic Loss For New Jersey【電子書籍】[ Robert DeSando ]

When the RMS Titanic sank in the North Atlantic in 1912 resulting in the death of an estimated 1,500 people, it was one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history. The unimaginable event shocked the world and continues to intrigue readers today.

The catastrophe had terrible consequences, both personal and economic, for New Jersey. It impacted the lives of hundreds of people with ties to the state - entrepreneurs whose businesses and factories provided thousands of jobs; investors who built stunning vacation resorts there and an ever-expanding network of railroads to reach them, and tycoons who erected opulent mansions by the ocean or in the verdant Pinelands to escape city life and entertain the cr?me de la cr?me of high society. Several of the richest people in the world were aboard the Titanic. They were shadowed by a cadre of professional gamblers and thieves anxious to separate them from their money. Among the passengers was a bogus baron and a bona fide countess; a movie star and a phenom of the opera; a famous clothing designer and a chic fashion model; prominent artists and authors; famed aviators and race car drivers ... even a desperate kidnapper on the lam. These and others influenced the shape of things to come in New Jersey by living or dying when an enormous iceberg abruptly ended their voyage. On the flip side, there were countless financially strapped immigrants yearning for a better life in New Jersey. Some lived to achieve their aspirations; most did not when the "unsinkable" luxury liner, a heralded "floating palace," plummeted to the frigid ocean floor.

These are their stories.

TITANIC GODS OF TAMIL NADU, INDIA A COMPARATIVE MYTHOLOGY OF STORIES ON INDIAN AND GREEK GODS【電子書籍】[ S. Sugumaran ]

The Greeks introduced the Titans to the world. Yet, there never was (or is) a temple for the Titanic Gods in Greece. Surprising isn’t it? At the same time, the readers will find more than one temple for most of the Titans in Tamil Nadu. The author takes the readers into a journey of the world of Titans in a strange land. Is not this perplexing? A shocking revelation is the Greek Olympians forming a core of divinity in Tamil Nadu. No explanation is provided for this by the author, though.
The genealogy of Gods in Tamil Nadu (evidently drawn from the Greek Texts) provides a solid relationship between the seemingly unrelated Gods In India. Sometimes, a female Greek Goddess is transformed into a male Hindu God. A genealogy of Asuras is also provided to scientifically explain some of the events in the Puranas. This lead the author, a known Euhemerist, to deviate a little from the original texts of Puranas wherever it was necessary. The author, a devout Hindu, firmly believes the Epics and Puranas of Hinduism are very real.
A special care has been taken to explain the nature of the birth and worship of Ganesha and Murugan in Tamil Nadu. It is thought the readers are in for a shock or two while reading the stories. And also, a real suspense hangs in the balance regarding the stories of ancient Tamil Sangams, the Sptarishis, the Chera, Chola, Pandiya dynasties of Tamil Nadu.
For the author, it was a wonderful experience and a great pleasure to write about the Gods and their age old temples in Tamil Nadu.

The Sinking of the Titanic and Great Sea Disasters【電子書籍】[ Logan Marshall ]

This is one of the first and most famous books published after the sinking of the Titanic, and contains much material from contemporary newspaper accounts. It was written by Logan Howard-Smith (under the pen name of Logan Marshall), an editor who specialized in the rapid publication of books about current events. For this book, his crowning achievement, the initial print run was for no fewer than 110,000 copies. The publisher achieved this by running 11 presses simultaneously, and the books were then sold door-to-door across America for a dollar apiece. Although Marshall's own description of the sinking is melodramatic and sensationalistic, the many verbatim interviews with survivors of the disaster have stood the test of time, and are often cited in Titanic literature.

This ebook edition features:

? 30 photographs and illustrations from the first edition

? When That Great Ship Went Down: The Legal and Political Repercussions of the Loss of RMS Titanic Bapton Books History Selections, #2【電子書籍】[ Markham Pyle ]

RMS Titanic sank in 1912, a US presidential election year; and in the very first days of the great House of Commons debate on Home Rule for Ireland. The Marconi companies were heroes to the press and the public, who credited them with saving the lives that were saved; JP Morgan, who owned the shipping trust that controlled Titanic's White Star Line, was a major political target for the trust-busters. And members of the British Cabinet, including the Attorney-General who was to direct (and nobble) the Crown's case in the Titanic enquiry, were up to their necks in inside trading in Marconi shares.

This is the story of how, in Titanic's loss, 1500 souls were sacrificed to the 'settled science' and 'scientific consensus' of marine engineering. It is also the story of how the US and British loss enquiries were shaped by party politics, corrupted by corrupt politicians and the Marconi Scandal, tainted by the politics of Irish Home Rule, and - finally - salvaged by Oliver Wendell Holmes and the US Supreme Court, and by Lord Mersey's judgement in the Board of Trade Enquiry and the subsequent International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea. This is the story of the witch-hunts, the cover-ups, and two upright judges who fought against the crooked deals they did not know were being done.

Titanic sank a century ago; but she sails on, the ghost ship of modern law and politics, shaping our world in ways we don't notice.

This is that story, told by the historians of Churchill's vindication in May 1940 and of how Congress, four months before Pearl Harbor, kept America's armed services ready for war, by a margin of one vote.

Praise for When That Great Ship Went Down:

'What sank the Titanic? Its builders' belief that, when it came to building ships, "the Science Was Settled". And, as this cool reassessment of the US and British Titanic enquiries shows, politicians and regulators in 1912 were just as bad as the current lot: they had a progressive political narrative to push, and their own secrets to hide. Sounds familiar.'

- James Delingpole, Daily Telegraph columnist, 2010 winner of the Bastiat Prize for Online Journalism, and author of, most recently, Watermelons: The Green Movement's True Colours

'In this sharply and eruditely-drawn account of the Titanic Inquiries on either side of the Atlantic, the authors warn: "What lessons this may hold for Mr Cameron and Mr Salmond is beyond the scope of this work." Fortunately, their vivid reconstruction and analysis enable us to draw plenty of damning parallels. This is a parliamentary procedural as well as the re-creation of a vanished pre-War world; its political and intellectual processes as well as a sociology ranging from Trollope to Joyce. This is far more than another clever "Titanic" book.'

- Anne-Elisabeth Moutet, Paris Contributing Columnist, The Sunday Telegraph
