Atlantic's Last Stop Courage, Folly, and Lies in the White Star Line's Worst Disaster Before Titanic【電子書籍】[ Bob Chaulk ]
|

In the pre-dawn hours of April 1, 1873ーas the lookouts looked, the steersman steered, and the captain sleptーsomething was happening to the SS Atlantic. The tide had quietly carried the White Star Line ocean liner twelve miles off course, and land was closer than anybody realizedーor was willing to believe. The wreck of the SS Atlantic would become the worst transatlantic passenger ship disaster before Titanic, and although it happened almost 150 years ago, there are still many unanswered questions. That is changing. Ten years after co-authoring the most celebrated book to date on Nova Scotia's worst shipwreck, author Bob Chaulk has uncovered never-reported information that answers the question historians have been grappling with for over a century: why a state-of-the-art steamship, with all equipment in perfect working order, in good weather, and commanded by officers of the world's leading seafaring nation, ended up striking rock outside Halifax and sinking, resulting in some 550 deaths. Over a five-year period, Chaulk tracked down many descendants of those on the scene and aboard the ship, patiently piecing their stories together to reveal a shocking conclusion. This richly illustrated work, featuring maps and colour photos, includes many firsthand accounts from passengers, crew, officers, and local rescue people.

Olympic Titanic Britannic The anatomy and evolution of the Olympic Class【電子書籍】[ Simon Mills ]
|

The Titanic. The Britannic. The Olympic. They are some of the most famous ships in history, but for the wrong reasons.

The Olympic Class liners were conceived as the largest, grandest ships ever to set sail. Of the three ships built, the first only lost the record for being the largest because she was beaten by the second, and they were both beaten by the third. The class was meant to secure the White Star Line's reputation as the greatest shipping company on earth. Instead, with the loss of both the Titanic and the Britannic in their first year of service, it guaranteed White Star's infamy.

This unique book tells the extraordinary story of these three extraordinary ships from the bottom up, starting with their conception and construction (and later their modification) and following their very different careers. Behind the technical details of these magnificent ships lies a tragic human story ? not just of the lives lost aboard the Titanic and Britannic, but of the designers pushing the limits beyond what was actually possible, engineers unable to prepare for every twist of fate, and ship owners and crew who truly believed a ship could be unsinkable.

This fascinating story is told with rare photographs, new computer-generated recreations of the ships, and unique wreck images that explore how well the ships were designed and built. Simon Mills offers unparalleled access to shipbuilders Harland & Wolff's specification book for the Olympic Class, including original blueprints and - being made widely available for the first time - large fold-out technical drawings showing how these extensive plans were meant to be seen.

Goebbels-The Evil Within and the Titanic Lie【電子書籍】[ I D Oppenhiem ]
|

This short and concise history (approx 5,000 words) deals in part with an horrific ending to a ship once used as a 'replica' of the ship RMS Titanic for the making of the later banned Nazi propaganda movie known generally as Titanic 1943.

It also covers some history surrounding the man ultimately responsible, not just for the making of the film, but of the fate of the thousands on board this same ship during its last moments.

The words 'Titanic Lie' are intended in this instance to cover not just this film, but also to a far greater degree, the actions and deeds perpetrated using the political banner as a legitimate weapon against dignity, respect, and humanitarian rights of others, and the man who signed himself as 'Herr Doktor' whose lasting legacy could only be one of hate.

Written as an introduction to this subject, the author has included some of the major influences affecting the life of Goebbels which may have contributed to his views towards other races and likewise may have contributed to his eagerness to emerge superior from the masses. But it should also be remembered that Goebbels was quick to change direction should this suit his purpose and was indeed a master of manipulation and opportunism.

The reader is left to consider whether indeed it was his ignorance which led him on this path or some other weakness that allowed him to become the monster he became.

When That Great Ship Went Down: The Legal and Political Repercussions of the Loss of RMS Titanic Bapton Books History Selections, #2【電子書籍】[ Markham Pyle ]
|

RMS Titanic sank in 1912, a US presidential election year; and in the very first days of the great House of Commons debate on Home Rule for Ireland. The Marconi companies were heroes to the press and the public, who credited them with saving the lives that were saved; JP Morgan, who owned the shipping trust that controlled Titanic's White Star Line, was a major political target for the trust-busters. And members of the British Cabinet, including the Attorney-General who was to direct (and nobble) the Crown's case in the Titanic enquiry, were up to their necks in inside trading in Marconi shares.

This is the story of how, in Titanic's loss, 1500 souls were sacrificed to the 'settled science' and 'scientific consensus' of marine engineering. It is also the story of how the US and British loss enquiries were shaped by party politics, corrupted by corrupt politicians and the Marconi Scandal, tainted by the politics of Irish Home Rule, and - finally - salvaged by Oliver Wendell Holmes and the US Supreme Court, and by Lord Mersey's judgement in the Board of Trade Enquiry and the subsequent International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea. This is the story of the witch-hunts, the cover-ups, and two upright judges who fought against the crooked deals they did not know were being done.

Titanic sank a century ago; but she sails on, the ghost ship of modern law and politics, shaping our world in ways we don't notice.

This is that story, told by the historians of Churchill's vindication in May 1940 and of how Congress, four months before Pearl Harbor, kept America's armed services ready for war, by a margin of one vote.

Praise for When That Great Ship Went Down:

'What sank the Titanic? Its builders' belief that, when it came to building ships, "the Science Was Settled". And, as this cool reassessment of the US and British Titanic enquiries shows, politicians and regulators in 1912 were just as bad as the current lot: they had a progressive political narrative to push, and their own secrets to hide. Sounds familiar.'

- James Delingpole, Daily Telegraph columnist, 2010 winner of the Bastiat Prize for Online Journalism, and author of, most recently, Watermelons: The Green Movement's True Colours

'In this sharply and eruditely-drawn account of the Titanic Inquiries on either side of the Atlantic, the authors warn: "What lessons this may hold for Mr Cameron and Mr Salmond is beyond the scope of this work." Fortunately, their vivid reconstruction and analysis enable us to draw plenty of damning parallels. This is a parliamentary procedural as well as the re-creation of a vanished pre-War world; its political and intellectual processes as well as a sociology ranging from Trollope to Joyce. This is far more than another clever "Titanic" book.'

- Anne-Elisabeth Moutet, Paris Contributing Columnist, The Sunday Telegraph

TITANIC GODS OF TAMIL NADU, INDIA A COMPARATIVE MYTHOLOGY OF STORIES ON INDIAN AND GREEK GODS【電子書籍】[ S. Sugumaran ]
|

The Greeks introduced the Titans to the world. Yet, there never was (or is) a temple for the Titanic Gods in Greece. Surprising isn’t it? At the same time, the readers will find more than one temple for most of the Titans in Tamil Nadu. The author takes the readers into a journey of the world of Titans in a strange land. Is not this perplexing? A shocking revelation is the Greek Olympians forming a core of divinity in Tamil Nadu. No explanation is provided for this by the author, though.
The genealogy of Gods in Tamil Nadu (evidently drawn from the Greek Texts) provides a solid relationship between the seemingly unrelated Gods In India. Sometimes, a female Greek Goddess is transformed into a male Hindu God. A genealogy of Asuras is also provided to scientifically explain some of the events in the Puranas. This lead the author, a known Euhemerist, to deviate a little from the original texts of Puranas wherever it was necessary. The author, a devout Hindu, firmly believes the Epics and Puranas of Hinduism are very real.
A special care has been taken to explain the nature of the birth and worship of Ganesha and Murugan in Tamil Nadu. It is thought the readers are in for a shock or two while reading the stories. And also, a real suspense hangs in the balance regarding the stories of ancient Tamil Sangams, the Sptarishis, the Chera, Chola, Pandiya dynasties of Tamil Nadu.
For the author, it was a wonderful experience and a great pleasure to write about the Gods and their age old temples in Tamil Nadu.

This is one of the first and most famous books published after the sinking of the Titanic, and contains much material from contemporary newspaper accounts. It was written by Logan Howard-Smith (under the pen name of Logan Marshall), an editor who specialized in the rapid publication of books about current events. The publisher achieved this by running 11 presses simultaneously, and the books were then sold door-to-door across America for a dollar apiece. Although Marshall's own description of the sinking is melodramatic and sensationalistic, the many verbatim interviews with survivors of the disaster have stood the test of time, and are often cited in Titanic literature.

This ebook edition features:

? 30 photographs and illustrations from the first edition

? Navigating on the Titanic Economic Growth, Energy, and the Failure of Governance【電子書籍】[ Bryne Purchase ]
|

Navigating on the Titanic outlines the brief history of economic growth and the private and public institutions - markets, corporations, households, and governments - which underpin that growth. Bryne Purchase examines mega-risks related to our economy's use of fossil fuels and specifically looks at resource depletion, energy security, and climate change - all "mega-risks" because they are both global in scope and potentially existential in impact.

Focusing on North America, with a particular emphasis on the United States, Purchase's central argument is that the institutions which have produced spectacular economic growth are not capable of acting with prudence to deal with these mega-risks before they become a real danger. He identifies certain institutional design flaws that, while underwriting economic growth, leave society open to potentially catastrophic failure and reveals how these design flaws have been compounded by the stresses of the growing income inequality in society.

Titanic: Fascinating Historical Facts of Titanic’s Tragic Tale (the Untold Stories, Forgotten Truths, and Hidden Mysteries behind the World's Most Famous Shipwreck)【電子書籍】[ Robert Matthews ]
|

The loss of the Titanic in 1912 cast a pall over all future voyages, and in the wake of the most famous sinking in history, a number of crucial changes were made, including the requirement that there be enough lifeboats available for every passenger, a change that was codified by the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea in 1914. That same convention also made a change to the way distress signals were used, and the British subsequently ensured that the bulkheads be raised higher up the boat to truly ensure that the compartments were watertight. Gone were the days that safety would be compromised for the comforts of the First Class. And of course, a bunch of changes were made to the way ships navigated around icebergs. You’ll discover: ?How the Titanic came to be, from an ambitious idea to build an unsinkable ship, to its construction and launch. ?What life was like aboard the Titanic, beginning with the impressive facilities reserved for the first class passengers and moving down to the humble lodgings in the third class. ?The gripping sequence of events, from the chilling iceberg sighting moment to the ship's tragic sinking. ?The aftermath and enduring legacy of the Titanic disaster, unraveling its profound impact on history and society. This Book is a work of nonfiction and is based on historical accounts, survivor testimonies, and documented investigations. While every effort has been made to ensure accuracy, some interpretations may vary. Lifeboat No. 8: An Untold Tale of Love, Loss, and Surviving the Titanic【電子書籍】[ Elizabeth Kaye ]
|

When the Titanic started sinking, who would make it off alive? The two cousins who had been so eager to see their first iceberg? The maid who desperately tried to escape with the baby in her care? The young newlyweds who'd booked passage despite warnings not to?

More than one hundred years after that disastrous and emblematic voyage, Elizabeth Kaye reveals the extraordinary, little-known story behind one of the first lifeboats to leave the doomed ship. A Second Edition of the This New York Times and Kindle best seller, it has been freshly edited and expanded by the author with new material.

Told in real time and in the actual voices of survivors, Kaye's poignant, pulse-pounding narrative includes the story of the Countess of Rothes, the wealthiest woman on the ship, bound for California, where she and her husband planned to start an orange farm. It was the Countess, dressed in ermine and pearls, who took command of Lifeboat No. 8, rowing for hours through the black and icy water. In the words of one of the Titanic's crew, she was "more of a man than any we have on board."

At the heart of Kaye's tale is a budding romance between the Countess's maid, Roberta Maioni, and the Titanic's valiant wireless operator, Jack Phillips. While Roberta made it safely onto Lifeboat No. 8, holding nothing but a photo of Jack she had run back to her cabin to retrieve, he remained on the ship, where he would send out the world's first SOS signal. But would it be received in time to save his life?

Surviving that fateful night in the North Atlantic was not the end of the saga for those aboard Lifeboat No 8. Kaye reveals what happened to each passenger and crew member and how the legendary maritime disaster haunted them forever.

A century later, we're still captivated by the Titanic and its passengers. With its skillful use of survivors' letters, diaries, and testimonies, "Lifeboat No. 8" adds a dramatic new chapter to the ongoing story.

The Truth about the Titanic (Summarized Edition) Enriched edition. A Deck-by-Deck Eyewitness Timeline of the 1912 Titanic Sinking, Lifeboats, and the U.S. and British Inquiries【電子書籍】[ Archibald Gracie ]
|

The Truth About the Titanic is a survivor's chronicle that reconstructs the liner's final hoursーalarms, musters, lifeboat launches, and the last minutes at the rail. Gracie fuses his own testimony with statements from fellow survivors and the U.S. and British inquiries, yielding a sober, forensic narrative with timings and deck-by-deck observations. As early Titanic literature, it preserves debates over evacuation and chain of command. Colonel Archibald Gracieーa New York gentleman and meticulous amateur historianーsurvived after being swept into the Atlantic and clinging to an overturned collapsible until rescue. During a brief, draining convalescence, he gathered affidavits, compared testimonies, and sought to identify the fates of named individuals; he died later in 1912, and the book appeared posthumously in 1913. Duty to the dead and habits of research shape every page. Readers of maritime history, disaster studies, and narrative nonfiction will value this indispensable primary sourceーimmediate, precise, and humane. Pair it with later scholarship and archaeological findings for balance, but consult Gracie for the closest contemporaneous map of events, voices, and motives aboard the world's most storied ship. Quickie Classics summarizes timeless works with precision, preserving the author's voice and keeping the prose clear, fast, and readableーdistilled, never diluted.
The New York Times ?bestselling author of Unsinkable "recounts the disaster from the vantage point of nearby vessels" ( Publishers Weekly).

A few minutes before midnight on April 14, 1912, the "unsinkable" RMS Titanic, on her maiden voyage to New York, struck an iceberg. Less than three hours later, she lay at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. While the world has remained fascinated by the tragedy, the drama of those fateful hours was not only played out aboard the doomed liner. It also took place on the decks of two other ships, one fifty-eight miles distant from the sinking Titanic, the other barely ten miles away.

The masters of the steamships Carpathia and Californian, Capt. Arthur Rostron and Capt. Stanley Lord, were informed within minutes of each other that their vessels had picked up the distress signals of a sinking ship. Their actions in the hours and days that followed would become the stuff of legend, as one would choose to take his ship into dangerous waters to answer the call for help, while the other would decide that the hazard to himself and his command was too great to risk responding.

After years of research, Daniel Allen Butler now tells this incredible story, moving from ship to ship on the icy waters of the North Atlanticーin real timeーto recount how hundreds of people could have been rescued, but in the end, only a few outside of the meager lifeboats were saved. He then looks at the US Senate investigation in Washington, and ultimately, the British Board of Trade inquiry in London, where the actions of each captain are probed, questioned, and judged, until the truth of what actually happened aboard the Titanic, the Carpathia, and the Californian is revealed.

"Powerful . . . very, very well-done." ー New York Times?bestselling author Clive Cussler

Almost everyone is familiar with what happened to the titanic during its maiden voyage and the tragedy that followed, but the construction of the titanic is often overlooked, despite being an amazing story itself, one that combined comfort and raw power with the world’s foremost technological advances. Nonetheless, the seeds of the titanic’s destruction were sown even before it left for its first and last journey. Similarly, the drama involved with the sinking of the titanic often obscures the important aftermath of the disaster, particularly the several investigations conducted on both sides of the atlantic that sought to figure out not only why the titanic sank but future changes that could be made in order to protect ships and passengers in the future. This book offers: ?A detailed account of the titanic's construction and maiden voyage. ?Insight into the lives of the passengers across all classes. ?A minute-by-minute retelling of the disaster, including eyewitness testimonies. ?The global aftermath and the impact on maritime laws. ?The rediscovery of the titanic’s wreck and its enduring cultural legacy. The sinking of the lusitania in 1915 was the first major event that shifted public opinion in the united states, and support for joining the war began to rise across the country. Many americans joined the preparedness movement, which advocated at least preparing for war if not entering the war outright, and though the country would not declare war against germany for two more years, the sinking of the lusitania is still cited as a key event that set america on the path toward joining the war.

After rewriting history with their discovery of a Nazi U-boat off the coast of New Jersey, legendary divers John Chatterton and Richie Kohler decided to investigate the great enduring mystery of history's most notorious shipwreck: Why did Titanic sink as quickly as it did?

To answer the question, Chatterton and Kohler assemble a team of experts to explore Titanic, study its engineering, and dive to the wreck of its sister ship, Brittanic, where Titanic's last secrets may be revealed.

Titanic's Last Secrets is a rollercoaster ride through the shipbuilding history, the transatlantic luxury liner business, and shipwreck forensics. Chatterton and Kohler weave their way through a labyrinth of clues to discover that Titanic was not the strong, heroic ship the world thought she was and that the men who built her covered up her flaws when disaster struck. If Titanic had remained afloat for just two hours longer than she did, more than two thousand people would have lived instead of died, and the myth of the great ship would be one of rescue instead of tragedy.

Titanic's Last Secrets is the never-before-told story of the Ship of Dreams, a contemporary adventure that solves a historical mystery.
