Roads to Ruin: The War for Morocco In the Sixteenth Century【電子書籍】[ Comer Plummer III ]
|

Roads to Ruin: The War for Morocco in the Sixteenth Century recounts the long contest for Morocco that ended on August 4, 1578, with Portugal’s spectacular defeat at the Battle of Ksar el-K?bir, also called the Battle of the Three Kings for the three monarchs who perished on the field of battle. This singular event heralded the end of Portugal’s golden age and the emergence of the modern Moroccan state. This fascinating history is told through figures of disparate backgrounds and nationalities, Christians and Muslims, whose lives traversed some of the great events of this era, including the religious wars of the Reformation, the Battle of Lepanto, and the last siege of Tunis, before converging that fateful day in northern Morocco. Roads to Ruin: The War for Morocco in the Sixteenth Century describes a momentous period of world history, the consequences of which reverberate to this day.

Travels in Morocco (Vol. 1&2) Complete Edition【電子書籍】[ James Richardson ]
|

Travels in Morocco in two volumes is a travel narrative written by American missionary and explorer James Richardson, and published by his wife after he lost his life at Bornou, in Central Africa. Richardson traveled to Africa as a missionary, but also undertook several other tasks in order to understand the condition of the strange and remarkable races of men who inhabit that part of the world. His goal was to introduce them with a legitimate commerce, with a view to destroy slave trade, and thus pave the way for the spreading of Christianity among a benighted people. Also he used every opportunity of studying the geography of the country, and of gaining an insight into the manners, customs, prejudices, and sentiments of its inhabitants.

Adventures in Morocco and Journeys Through the Oases of Draa and Tafilet【電子書籍】[ Friedrich Gerhard Rohlfs ]

"The first European to cross the Sahara from the north to south." Allaby, Exploration (2010)

"Most interesting."-Pictorial World

"As an explorer, Rohlfs stands next to Barth and Livingstone." -Athenaeum

"A traveller and explorer whose adventures remind us of Barth and Bruce."-Hour.

"We have not read a book with so much pleasure for some time."-Literary World

"We recommend his volume to all lovers of adventurous travel."-Examiner

Disguised as an Arab, Gerhard Rohlfs was the first European to cross Africa from Tripoli across the Sahara desert from north to south. He travelled via Lake Chad and along the Niger River and to present-day Lagos on the Gulf of Guinea from 1865-1867. He was the second European explorer to visit the region of the Draa River in the south of Morocco. For this work, in 1868 he was awarded the Patron's Medal of the Royal Geographical Society of London.

Rohlfs's detailed account of his time in Morocco and the Sahara is contained in his 1874 book "Adventures in Morocco and Journeys Through the Oases of Draa and Tafilet." (Rohlf's English book does not list a specific translator; in 1874 in the magazine Athenaeum, Rohlfs in specifying the translator merely states that "at my wish, Messrs. Low caused an English translation to be made.")

Rohlfs' accounts of his experience in Morocco reads more like an adventure novel than history. Several times he was attacked by robbers and left for dead; and once, covered with nine wounds, he lay for two days and three nights in the desert: there he found good Samaritans in the inhabitants of a neighboring oasis, who kindly cared for him, and enabled him to resume his travels.

He had scarcely entered on his first journey in this inhospitable country when he was robbed of every thing that he possessed; but, declining to turn back, he had the courage to press on to the first grand sheriff and apply for the position of surgeon in the army. Thus he obtained, and was soon promoted to the post of body-physician to the Governor, and thus obtained access to the royal city of Fez, the residence of the Emperor.

According to Rohlfs very few of the Berbers understood the Koran, the prayers, or the religious precepts, which are all in the Arabic tongue; yet, nevertheless, they were the most radical Moslems, and threatened him several times, whom they suspected of being a "Christian dog."

Rohlf's life was always saved by the intervention of the Governor's son, who was a distant descendant of the Mohamed; whose influence was all-powerful.

Having made well nigh the circuit of Morocco, skirting the Atlantic seaboard from Tangiers southwards, besides long intervals of sojourn in the Sahara, and penetrating to the Oases of Draa and Tafi.

Global and Local in Algeria and Morocco The World, The State and the Village【
|

This book brings together contributors across the disciplines to examine the local, national, regional and global processes that have shaped Maghribi societies, economies and politics since the colonial period.

Focusing equally on the local shape of global processes and on the broader significance of particular ‘ways of doing things’, these studies move beyond generalisations about globalisation and its impact on local societies, whether developmental or detrimental, of the ‘global in the local’, or of ‘glocalisation’. Cases range from the onset of the ‘first wave’ of globalisation in the colonial era to the most recent developments in identity politics, consumerism, and telecommunications. Contributors show how nationalising and globalising influences are seized, remade, and put to work in very different ways by High Atlas farmers or urban real estate speculators, human rights activists at the edge of the Sahara and amateur theatre actors in Mediterranean towns. Always located somewhere, these social actors nonetheless act in different ways, with different effects, at different levels of engagement, whether with each other, their own governments, or the wider world.

This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of North African Studies.

Girls of the Factory A Year with the Garment Workers of Morocco【電子書籍】[ M. Laetitia Cairoli ]
|

In Morocco today, the idea of female laborers is generally frowned upon. Yet despite this, many women are beginning to find work in factories.

Laetitia Cairoli spent a year in the ancient city of Fes; Girls of the Factory tells the story of what life is like for working women. Forced to find a factory job herself so that she could speak more intimately with working women, she was able to learn firsthand why they work, what working means to them, and how important earning a wage is to their sense of self.

Cairoli conveys a general sense of the working life of women in Morocco by describing daily life inside a Moroccan sewing factory. She also reveals the additional work they face inside their homes. More than an ethnography, this volume is also for those who want to better understand what life is like for a new generation of young women just entering the workforce.

Morocco under King Hassan【電子書籍】[ Stephen Hughes ]
|

Written by a foreign correspondent resident in Morocco since 1952, "Morocco under King Hassan" is an impartial chronicle of all the major events in the North African kingdom during this period, relating how the king, who claimed to be a direct descendent to the Prophet Muhammed, reigned for more than 30 years, despite attempts by leftists, the military and Muslim fundamentalists to overthrow him. Due to strict press laws, no Moroccan has ever published a dispassionate account of the country and its monarchy. Most books on the subject tend to fall into one of two categories - those that are hymns of praise for the Moroccan monarchy, and those arguing that it is one of the most despotic and reactionary regimes in the world. Morocco under King Hassan is a journalist's objective view of a country he has lived in for nearly 50 years. The book covers the nationalist struggle for independence, conflicts with neighbouring Algeria, the guerrilla war in Western Sahara and all other major political, economic and social developments that have turned Morocco into a multiparty democracy with a liberal economic system that makes it unique in the Arab world. Under King Hassan Morocco was modernized while retaining its ancient traditions and culture and, at the same time, promoting religious tolerance. Political stability at home and the king's moderating influence in the Middle East and foreign affairs generally, have won Morocco many Western friends. This book provides an insight into the inner workings of an endearing and gripping country which will provide the reader with a better understanding and appreciation of Morocco and the Moroccans. Consisting of 37 chapters, it is designed as a handbook for both the specialist and general reader.

Local Politics in Jordan and Morocco Strategies of Centralization and Decentralization【電子書籍】[ Janine A. Clark ]
|

In recent years, authoritarian states in the Middle East and North Africa have faced increasing international pressure to decentralize political power. Decentralization is presented as a panacea that will foster good governance and civil society, helping citizens procure basic services and fight corruption. Two of these states, Jordan and Morocco, are monarchies with elected parliaments and recent experiences of liberalization. Morocco began devolving certain responsibilities to municipal councils decades ago, while Jordan has consistently followed a path of greater centralization. Their experiences test such assumptions about the benefits of localism.

Janine A. Clark examines why Morocco decentralized while Jordan did not and evaluates the impact of their divergent paths, ultimately explaining how authoritarian regimes can use decentralization reforms to consolidate power. Local Politics in Jordan and Morocco argues that decentralization is a tactic authoritarian regimes employ based on their coalition strategies to expand their base of support and strengthen patron-client ties. Clark analyzes the opportunities that decentralization presents to local actors to pursue their interests and lays out how municipal-level figures find ways to use reforms to their advantage. In Morocco, decentralization has resulted not in greater political inclusivity or improved services, but rather in the entrenchment of pro-regime elites in power. The main Islamist political party has also taken advantage of these reforms. In Jordan, decentralization would undermine the networks that benefit elites and their supporters. Based on extensive fieldwork, Local Politics in Jordan and Morocco is an important contribution to Middle East studies and political science that challenges our understanding of authoritarian regimes’ survival strategies and resilience.

The Pillars of Hercules Enriched edition. A Narrative of Travels in Spain and Morocco in 1848; vol.
|

In "The Pillars of Hercules," David Urquhart offers a mesmerizing exploration of the geographical and cultural identities surrounding the Strait of Gibraltar. Through a blend of travel narrative and philosophical reflection, Urquhart eschews conventional genres to create a vivid tapestry that connects the physical landscape with the human experience. Written in the mid-19th century, the book captures the burgeoning interest in Mediterranean studies, fueled by an era of imperial expansion and cultural exchange, employing lyrical prose that invites readers into a nuanced understanding of place and identity. David Urquhart was a pioneering traveler, diplomat, and early advocate for the idea of a unified Europe. His extensive travels through Europe and the Near East endowed him with firsthand experiences of the regions he describes, shaping his insightful perspectives on cultural interaction and imperial politics. A strong critic of British colonial policy, Urquhart's views often reflected his belief in the importance of learning from different cultures, which is vividly illustrated in this work, where he seeks to transcend the boundaries of nation-states and engage with the broader human narrative. I highly recommend "The Pillars of Hercules" to readers interested in travel literature, history, and cultural studies. Urquhart's unique insights and eloquent prose not only illuminate the Mediterranean landscape but also provoke deeper reflections on the interconnectedness of humanity. This book is a vital read for anyone who seeks to understand the complexities of cultural identity within a historical context. In this enriched edition, we have carefully created added value for your reading experience: - Handーpicked Memorable Quotes shine a spotlight on moments of literary brilliance. - Interactive footnotes clarify unusual references, historical allusions, and archaic phrases for an effortless, more informed read.

Precarious Modernities Assembling State, Space and Society on the Urban Margins in Morocco【電子書籍】[ Cristiana Strava ]
|

Using rich ethnographic detail, Precarious Modernities offers an immersive account of the multiple scales and entangled actors involved in the objectification and instrumentalization of Casablanca's margins as part of ongoing and contingent processes of 'modernization'. Focusing on the everyday lives and spaces of a mythicized community, and its interaction with heritage activists, international development agendas and technocratic planning regimes, the book documents how the depoliticization of the urban margins aids the consolidation of deeply unequal social, spatial, and economic orders.

The result is a unique account of the political continuities, security logics, economic ideologies and competing forces that shape the possibilities open to precarious communities in a storied and sprawling metropolis. As marginalized inhabitants develop pragmatic ways of appropriating or resisting powerful agendas, unanticipated and novel forms of political engagement emerge. These signal the revival and reconfiguration of notions of class and open up creative and alternative spatial avenues for participation in an era of increasing authoritarianisms.

Weaving Political Time in Morocco The Imaginary of the State in the Neoliberal Age【電子書籍】[ B?atrice Hibou ]
|

Analyses of state power in Morocco have always been mired in exoticism or exceptionalism. The Kingdom is said to be a prototype of political immobility; a country caught in the authoritarian and conservative grip of its monarch, known as the ‘Commander of the Faithful’; a state in need of democratisation, but also a bastion of moderate Islam.

Drawing on thirty years of fieldwork, interviews and extensive primary documentation, B?atrice Hibou and Mohamed Tozy reveal how demographic, political and cultural changes have transformed Morocco’s government and modes of domination, from its pre-colonial past to the present. Interrogating the ideas of ‘Empire’ and ‘Nation-state’ as particular forms of rule, they examine the legacy of the centuries-long Sharifian Empire, in relation to the contemporary neoliberal government. They show how imperial traditions and the modern state co-exist today, in an intricate tapestry of seemingly contradictory power relations, different understandings of legitimacy, and competing visions of authority, sovereignty and responsibility.

Drawing on the work of Max Weber and Michel Foucault,Weaving Political Time in Moroccois a comprehensive, comparative examination of the evolution and continuities of state power in this complex North African country.

Twilight in the Lands of Disorder Spain, France, and the Conquest of Morocco (1906-1927)【電子書籍】[ Comer Plummer III ]
|

Twilight in the Lands of Disorder: France, Spain and the Conquest of Morocco (1906-1927) describes the conquest and pacification Morocco, a kingdom that had, due to its strategic value, survived as an independent country until the end of the European rush to colonize Africa. That ended in 1906, when France, obsessed with protecting her imperium in Algeria, succeeded in bartering with her European competitors for supremacy in Morocco. Unfortunately for the French, this arrangement required working with a junior partner, Spain, which was already installed along the northern coast of Morocco; and the consequences for her were nearly disastrous. While the French succeeded in bringing peace and development to their zone, Spanish irresolution and ineptitude unleashed several of rebellions, culminating with that of a coalition of Riffian tribes under the inspired leadership of Mohammad Abd el-Krim. The Riff War (1921-1926) began with the calamitous defeat of Spanish forces at Annual and ultimately carried into the French zone before the combined military might and France and Spain finally brought tiny Riffian Republic to heal. While this conflict ended indigenous rule in Morocco, the conquerors would derive small satisfaction for their triumph; each would reap its bitter reward. And the Quixotic Mohammad Abd el-Krim became an inspiration to freedom fighters everywhere.

Jewish Morocco A History from Pre-Islamic to Postcolonial Times【電子書籍】[ Emily Benichou Gottreich ]
|

The history of Morocco cannot effectively be told without the history of its Jewish inhabitants. Their presence in Northwest Africa pre-dates the rise of Islam and continues to the present day, combining elements of Berber (Amazigh), Arab, Sephardi and European culture. Emily Gottreich examines the history of Jews in Morocco from the pre-Islamic period to post-colonial times, drawing on newly acquired evidence from archival materials in Rabat. Providing an important reassessment of the impact of the French protectorate over Morocco, the author overturns widely accepted views on Jews' participation in Moroccan nationalism - an issue often marginalized by both Zionist and Arab nationalist narratives - and breaks new ground in her analysis of Jewish involvement in the istiqlal and its aftermath. Fitting into a growing body of scholarship that consciously strives to integrate Jewish and Middle Eastern studies, Emily Gottreich here provides an original perspective by placing pressing issues in contemporary Moroccan society into their historical, and in their Jewish, contexts.

Immigration Nation Aid, Control, and Border Politics in Morocco【電子書籍】[ Lorena Gazzotti ]
|

Over the past forty years, countries in the Global North have increasingly restricted their migration policies to reduce the arrival of migrants. As part of this, development aid has become a central tool in the migration control strategy pursued by European countries and the US, with donors, International Organisations and NGOs becoming prominent actors. In this book, Lorena Gazzotti shows that migration control is not only exercised through fences and deportation. Building on extensive research in Morocco, Gazzotti shows that aid marks the rise of a substantially different mode of migration containment, one where power works beyond fast violence, and its disciplinary potential is augmented precisely by its elusiveness. Where existing studies on border externalisation have essentialised donors, International Organisations and NGOs, with countries of 'origin' and 'transit' as compliant subcontractors, and border control as a neat form of intervention, this nuanced study unsettles such assumptions, to show that bordering happens in everyday, mundane fashions, far away from the spectacle of border violence. The European Union’s Immigration Policy Managing Migration in Turkey and Morocco【電子書籍】[ Ayselin G?zde Y?ld?z ]
|

This book analyzes the externalization of the EU’s immigration and asylum practices towards non-member transit countries and the consequences of this process. Selected policy areas of externalization (border management, visa policy, readmission agreements and asylum policy) are applied to Turkey and Morocco as two main migration transit countries within two different institutional cooperation mechanisms: Turkey as an EU candidate country within the EU’s enlargement policy; Morocco without membership prospect within the EU’s neighborhood policy. Y?ld?z applies theoretical debates and critically compares the rhetoric in policy papers with practice in the field. This volume not only contributes to the issue of the external dimension of EU immigration policy by incorporating transit countries into the debate, but also expands upon our understanding of the EU’s contested external governance paradigm. It will be of use to students, scholars, and policy makers in the field of European studies, migration and asylum studies, international relations, and political science.

Two Arabs, a Berber, and a Jew Entangled Lives in Morocco【電子書籍】[ Lawrence Rosen ]

In this remarkable work by seasoned scholar Lawrence Rosen, we follow the fascinating intellectual developments of four ordinary Moroccans over the span of forty years. Walking and talking with Haj Hamed Britel, Yaghnik Driss, Hussein Qadir, and Shimon Benizriーin a country that, in a little over a century, has gone from an underdeveloped colonial outpost to a modern Arab country in the throes of economic growth and religious fervorーRosen details a fascinating plurality of viewpoints on culture, history, and the ways both can be dramatically transformed.
Through the intellectual lives of these four men, this book explores a number of interpretative and theoretical issues that have made Arab culture distinct, especially in relationship to the West: how nothing is ever hard and fast, how everything is relational and always a product of negotiation. It showcases the vitality of the local in a global era, and it contrasts Arab notions of time, equality, and self with those in the West. Likewise, Rosen unveils his own entanglement in their world and the drive to keep the analysis of culture first and foremost, even as his own life enmeshes itself in those of his study. An exploration of faith, politics, history, and memory, this book highlights the world of everyday life in Arab society in ways that challenge common notions and stereotypes.

The Stolen Lands of Morocco ? A Historical Foundation ?【電子書籍】[ Jalal MOUDRIKAH ]

Between history and politics, between memory and geography, this book takes the reader on a unique intellectual journey to uncover the roots of the conflict between Morocco and Algeria.

Through a meticulous reading of the events that have shaped the region for centuries, the author skillfully reveals the hidden threads of colonial history, border division, and its far-reaching consequences. Drawing on rare sources and both Arab and Western documents, he employs a critical and comparative approach to challenge and correct many inaccuracies established in foreign writings and certain local narratives.

Across its chapters, the book traces the historical origins of the Algerian state, first as an Ottoman regency (Eyalet) and later as a French colony that gradually expanded over neighboring territories. It exposes the mechanisms of colonial border partitioning and examines its social, political, and cultural repercussions on the present and future of both nations.

The author also offers a deep critical perspective on the role of French colonialism in creating artificial borders, showing how this process reshaped geography and politics to serve imperial interests while sowing the seeds of enduring tension.

In its analytical section, the work explores the symbolic and sovereign dimension of the Moroccan monarchy, illustrating how it has become the cornerstone in defending Morocco's identity and territorial unity, in contrast with the ideological constructs of the Algerian regime.

This is not merely a historical account but a profound analysis of Maghreb relations, bridging the human and the political dimensions, linking the past with the present to open new paths of understanding and dialogue about the future of coexistence between the two nations.

An essential book for researchers, historians of the Maghreb, and for every reader seeking truth beyond the walls built by politics and concealed by history.

It is established that the informal sector plays an important role in the creation of job opportunities for many rural and urban people. However, there is a scarcity of academic research on the relationship between gender, informality of employment and poverty reduction in Morocco with particular reference to the city of Fez. This book focuses on investigating the contribution of women’s self-employed work in the informal sector in reducing household poverty in the city of Fez. This is done through the medium of specific framework objectives. First, the book sets out the types of women engaged in informal sector activities in the city of Fez. Secondly, it makes a situational analysis of the contribution of women’s work in the informal sector to reduce poverty in their households in this region of Morocco. Thirdly, it identifies the linkages between working as self-employed persons and emancipation of women through their participation in political and social activism in Fez and lastly, it uncovers the main difficulties impeding the development of women in self-employed activities in the informal sector and identifies the various challenges for the development of their businesses in Fez.

The Land beyond the Border State Formation and Territorial Expansion in Syria, Morocco, and Israel【電子書籍】[ Johannes Becke ]

Uses an innovative theoretical framework to comparatively explore the dynamics of state expansion and contraction in Syria (1976-2005), Morocco (since 1975), and Israel (since 1967).

Based on three case studies from the Middle East, The Land beyond the Border advances an innovative theoretical framework for the study of state expansions and state contractions. Johannes Becke argues that state expansion can be theorized according to four basic ideal types-a form of patronage (patronization), the imposition of a satellite regime (satellization), the establishment of territorial exclaves (exclavization), or a full-fledged takeover (incorporation). Becke discusses how both irredentist ideologies and political realities have shaped the dynamics of state expansion and state contraction in the recent history of each state. By studying Israel comparatively with other Middle Eastern regimes, this book forms part of an emerging research agenda seeking to bring the research fields of Israel Studies and Middle East Studies closer together. Instead of treating Israel's rule over the occupied territories as an isolated case, Becke offers students the chance to understand Israel's settlement project within the broader framework of postcolonial state formation.
