Revelations of Divine Love Sixteen Mystical Visions【電子書籍】[ Julian of Norwich ]
|

Revelations of Divine Love is a medieval book of Christian mystical devotions. It was written between the 14th and 15th centuries by Julian of Norwich. It is the earliest surviving example of a book in the English language known to have been written by a woman. It is also the earliest surviving work written by an English anchorite or anchoress. Julian wrote about the sixteen mystical visions or "shewings" she received when she was in her thirties. Whilst she was seriously ill, and believing to be on her deathbed, the visions appeared to her over a period of several hours in one night, with a final revelation occurring the following night. After making a full recovery, she wrote an account of each vision. She developed her ideas over a period of decades, and wrote a far more extended version of her writings.

As Jack Zipes says further in the foreword, “Folk and fairy tales pervade our lives constantly through television soap operas and commercials, in comic books and cartoons, in school plays and storytelling performances, in our superstitions and prayers for miracles, and in our dreams and daydreams. The artistic re-creations of fairy-tale plots and characters in filmーthe parodies, the aesthetic experimentation, and the mixing of genres to engender new insights into art and lifeー mirror possibilities of estranging ourselves from designated roles, along with the conventional patterns of the classical tales.”

Here, scholars from film, folklore, and cultural studies move discussion beyond the well-known Disney movies to the many other filmic adaptations of fairy tales and to the widespread use of fairy tale tropes, themes, and motifs in cinema.

Japan, 1972 Visions of Masculinity in an Age of Mass Consumerism【電子書籍】[ Yoshikuni Igarashi ]
|

By the early 1970s, Japan had become an affluent consumer society, riding a growing economy to widely shared prosperity. In the aftermath of the fiery political activism of 1968, the country settled down to the realization that consumer culture had taken a firm grip on Japanese society. Japan, 1972 takes an early-seventies year as a vantage point for understanding how Japanese society came to terms with cultural change.

Yoshikuni Igarashi examines a broad selection of popular film, television, manga, and other media in order to analyze the ways Japanese culture grappled with this economic shift. He exposes the political underpinnings of mass culture and investigates deeper anxieties over questions of agency and masculinity. Igarashi underscores how the male-dominated culture industry strove to defend masculine identity by looking for an escape from the high-growth economy. He reads a range of cultural works that reveal perceptions of imperiled Japanese masculinity through depictions of heroes’ doomed struggles against what were seen as the stifling and feminizing effects of consumerism. Ranging from manga travelogues to war stories, yakuza films to New Left radicalism, Japan, 1972 sheds new light on a period of profound socioeconomic change and the counternarratives of masculinity that emerged to manage it.

India in the Italian Renaissance Visions of a Contemporary Pagan World 1300-1600【電子書籍】[ Meera Juncu ]
|

India in the Italian Renaissance provides a systematic, chronological survey of early Italian representations of India and Indians from the late medieval period to the end of the 16th century, and their resonance within the cultural context of Renaissance Italy. The study focuses in particular on Italian attitudes towards the inhabitants of the Indian subcontinent and questions how Renaissance Italians, schooled in the admiration of classical antiquity, responded to the challenge of this contemporary pagan world.

Meera Juncu draws from a wide-ranging selection of contemporary travel literature to trace the development of Italian ideas about Indians both before and after Vasco Da Gama’s landing in Calicut. After an introduction to the key concepts and a survey of inherited notions about India, the works of a diverse range of writers and editors, including Marco Polo, Petrarch and Giovanni Battista Ramusio, are analysed in detail. Through its discussion of these texts, this book examines whether ‘India’ came in any way to represent a pagan civilization comparable to the classical antiquity celebrated in Italy during the Renaissance.

India in the Italian Renaissance offers a new and exciting perspective on this fascinating period for students and scholars of the Italian Renaissance and the history of India.

Socialism, Utopian and Scientific Evolution of Socialist Theory: From Utopian Visions to Scientific Realities【電子書籍】[ Friedrich Engels ]
|

Friedrich Engels' "Socialism: Utopian and Scientific" provides a rigorous examination of socialism's evolution, contrasting the idealistic vision espoused by earlier theorists with the empirical and practical approach of scientific socialism pioneered by Karl Marx. Engels employs a clear, didactic literary style, integrating historical analysis and philosophical discourse to engage with the socio-economic realities of the 19th century. The work unfolds within the context of the industrial revolution, highlighting the contradictions of capitalism and the necessity for a systematic socio-political change grounded in material conditions. Engels, a German philosopher and a close collaborator to Marx, was deeply influenced by the social upheavals of his time, particularly during his years in England, where he witnessed firsthand the plight of the working class. His extensive involvement in labor movements and his collaboration with Marx underpinned his commitment to advocating for a scientific approach to socialism. Engels aims to elevate the discourse, moving beyond utopian visions to articulate a framework for understanding and achieving a revolutionary transformation of society. This seminal text is essential for anyone seeking to understand the roots of socialist theory and its relevance today. Scholars, students, and political activists will find Engels' arguments compelling in light of contemporary socio-political challenges, making this work a remarkable read for those invested in social justice and economic equity.

The Tables Turned; or, Nupkins Awakened. A Socialist Interlude Rising Against Oppression: A Socialist Vision【電子書籍】[ William Morris ]
|

In "The Tables Turned; or, Nupkins Awakened: A Socialist Interlude," William Morris masterfully weaves a narrative that serves as both a scathing critique of the capitalist society of his time and a poignant call to socialist ideals. Through the interactions of the titular character, Nupkins, and a band of social reformers, Morris employs a blend of allegorical storytelling and vivid imagery, reflecting the period's broader socio-political turbulent climate. His style is marked by a rich linguistic texture and a lyrical cadence reminiscent of medieval literature, inviting readers to engage deeply with the philosophical underpinnings of his argument. William Morris was not only an influential writer but also a tireless advocate for socialist principles, driven by his experiences in the art, craft, and design realms. His disillusionment with the industrial society and championing of artisanal production stem from his belief in the value of creativity and its role in enhancing human experience. This personal and artistic journey profoundly influenced the creation of this interlude, positioning it as a vital voice in the socialist literary canon. "The Tables Turned" is recommended for readers interested in the intersections of literature, social critique, and political ideology. Morris's visionary work is a crucial read for those seeking to understand the complexities of the socialist movement and its literary expressions, rendering it a timeless contribution to political discourse.

Politics and Vision Continuity and Innovation in Western Political Thought - Expanded Edition【電子書籍】[ Sheldon S. Wolin ]
|

Politics and Vision is a landmark work by one of the great thinkers of the twentieth century. This is a significantly expanded edition of one of the greatest works of modern political theory. Sheldon Wolin's Politics and Vision inspired and instructed two generations of political theorists after its appearance in 1960. Substantially expanded for republication in 2004, it is both a sweeping survey of Western political thought and a powerful account of contemporary predicaments of power and democracy. In lucid and compelling prose, Sheldon Wolin offers original, subtle, and often surprising interpretations of political theorists from Plato to Rawls. Situating them historically while sounding their depths, he critically engages their diverse accounts of politics, theory, power, justice, citizenship, and institutions. The new chapters, which show how thinkers have grappled with the immense possibilities and dangers of modern power, are themselves a major theoretical statement. They culminate in Wolin’s remarkable argument that the United States has invented a new political form, "inverted totalitarianism,“ in which economic rather than political power is dangerously dominant. In this expanded edition, the book that helped to define political theory in the late twentieth century should energize, enlighten, and provoke generations of scholars to come.

Wolin originally wrote Politics and Vision to challenge the idea that political analysis should consist simply of the neutral observation of objective reality. He argues that political thinkers must also rely on creative vision. Wolin shows that great theorists have been driven to shape politics to some vision of the Good that lies outside the existing political order. As he tells it, the history of theory is thus, in part, the story of changing assumptions about the Good.

Acclaimed as a tour de force when it was first published, and a major scholarly event when the expanded edition appeared, Politics and Vision will instruct, inspire, and provoke for generations to come.

Vision A Computational Investigation into the Human Representation and Processing of Visual Information【電子書籍】[ David Marr ]

Available again, an influential book that offers a framework for understanding visual perception and considers fundamental questions about the brain and its functions.

David Marr's posthumously published Vision (1982) influenced a generation of brain and cognitive scientists, inspiring many to enter the field. In Vision, Marr describes a general framework for understanding visual perception and touches on broader questions about how the brain and its functions can be studied and understood. Researchers from a range of brain and cognitive sciences have long valued Marr's creativity, intellectual power, and ability to integrate insights and data from neuroscience, psychology, and computation. This MIT Press edition makes Marr's influential work available to a new generation of students and scientists.

In Marr's framework, the process of vision constructs a set of representations, starting from a description of the input image and culminating with a description of three-dimensional objects in the surrounding environment. A central theme, and one that has had far-reaching influence in both neuroscience and cognitive science, is the notion of different levels of analysisーin Marr's framework, the computational level, the algorithmic level, and the hardware implementation level.

Now, thirty years later, the main problems that occupied Marr remain fundamental open problems in the study of perception. Vision provides inspiration for the continuing efforts to integrate knowledge from cognition and computation to understand vision and the brain.

A concise, comprehensive overview of the “M Theory” and its application in today’s world, by a renowned American philosopher

Ken Wilber has long been hailed as one of the most important thinkers of our time, but his work has seemed inaccessible to readers who lack a background in consciousness studies or evolutionary theoryーuntil now. In A Theory of Everything, Wilber uses clear, non-technical language to present complex, cutting-edge theories that integrate the realms of body, mind, soul, and spirit. He then demonstrates how these theories and models can be applied to real world problems and incorporated into readers’ everyday lives.

Wilber begins his study by presenting models like “spiral dynamics”ーa leading model of human evolutionーand his groundbreaking “all-level, all-quadrant” model for integrating science and religion, showing how they are being applied to politics, medicine, business, education, and the environment. He also covers broader models, explaining how they can integrate the various worldviews that have been developed around the world throughout the ages. Finally, Wilber proposes that readers take up an "integral transformative practice"ーsuch as meditationーto help them apply and develop this integral vision in their personal, daily lives. A fascinating and easy-to-follow exploration of the “M Theory,” this book is another tour-de-force from one of America’s most inventive minds.

In "The Elements of Law, Natural and Politic," Thomas Hobbes meticulously delineates the foundational principles of human nature, governance, and societal order. Utilizing a systematic and analytical approach, Hobbes presents an intricate examination of the social contract and the necessity of a sovereign authority to prevent the chaos of the state of nature. This work, initially published in parts as "Elements of Law" in 1640, is characterized by Hobbes's clear prose and a logical progression of ideas that weave together philosophy, political theory, and moral reasoning in a period marked by civil strife and intellectual upheaval. Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679), an English philosopher and political theorist, lived through the tumultuous events of the English Civil War, which profoundly influenced his views on authority and human behavior. His experiences shaped his belief in the inherent selfishness of humans and the need for a powerful centralized government to ensure peace and stability. These ideas were groundbreaking at the time and laid the groundwork for modern political philosophy. For readers interested in the origins of social contract theory or the interplay between individual rights and state power, "The Elements of Law, Natural and Politic" is an essential text. August Bebel, a prominent German socialist and co-founder of the Social Democratic Party, was deeply influenced by the revolutionary ideas of his time and his own experiences of inequality. His commitment to social justice and women'??s rights was rooted in both personal and political dimensions, leading him to champion the cause of women in a male-dominated society. Bebel's writing not only serves as a political treatise but also as a reflection of the burgeoning feminist movements of the late 19th century, positioning him as a pivotal figure in both socialism and women's advocacy. "Woman under Socialism" is essential reading for anyone interested in the intersections of gender and socialism, as well as those seeking a historical context for contemporary feminist discourse. Bebel's insightful analysis remains relevant, offering timeless perspectives on the quest for gender equality. Readers will find both inspiration and a call to action within its pages, making it a significant addition to the library of any socially conscious individual.

One of America’s pre-eminent economists offers a provocative critique of the failures of liberalism

In The Vision of the Anointed, Thomas Sowell presents a devastating critique of the mind-set behind the failed social policies of the past thirty years. Sowell sees what has happened during that time not as a series of isolated mistakes but as a logical consequence of a tainted vision whose defects have led to crises in education, crime, and family dynamics, and to other social pathologies. In this book, he describes how elitesーthe anointedーhave replaced facts and rational thinking with rhetorical assertions, thereby altering the course of our social policy.

At the turn of the last century, as industrialists and workers made Chicago the hardworking City of Big Shoulders celebrated by Carl Sandburg, Chicago women articulated an alternative City of Homes in which the welfare of residents would be the municipal government's principal purpose. Seeing With Their Hearts traces the formation of this vision from the relief efforts following the Chicago fire of 1871 through the many political battles of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. In the process, it presses a new understanding of the roles of women in public life and writes a new history of urban America.

Heeding the call of activist Louise de Koven Bowen to become third-class passengers on the train of life, thousands of women "put their shoulders to the wheel and their whole hearts into the work" of fighting for better education, worker protections, clean air and water, building safety, health care, and women's suffrage. Though several well-known activists appeared frequently in these initiatives, Maureen Flanagan offers compelling evidence that women established a broad and durable solidarity that spanned differences of race, class, and political experience. She also shows that these women--emphasizing their common identity as women seeking a city amenable to the needs of women, children, families, and homes--pursued a vision and goals distinct from the reform agenda of Progressive male activists. They fought hard and sometimes successfully in a variety of public places and sites of power, winning victories from increased political clout and prenatal care to municipal garbage collection and pasteurized milk.

While telling the fascinating and in some cases previously untold stories of women activists during Chicago's formative period, this book fundamentally recasts urban social and political history.
