Cutting Along the Color Line Black Barbers and Barber Shops in America【電子書籍】[ Quincy T. Mills ]
|

Today, black-owned barber shops play a central role in African American public life. The intimacy of commercial grooming encourages both confidentiality and camaraderie, which make the barber shop an important gathering place for African American men to talk freely. But for many years preceding and even after the Civil War, black barbers endured a measure of social stigma for perpetuating inequality: though the profession offered economic mobility to black entrepreneurs, black barbers were obliged by custom to serve an exclusively white clientele. Quincy T. Mills traces the lineage from these nineteenth-century barbers to the bustling enterprises of today, demonstrating that the livelihood offered by the service economy was crucial to the development of a black commercial sphere and the barber shop as a democratic social space.

Cutting Along the Color Line chronicles the cultural history of black barber shops as businesses and civic institutions. Through several generations of barbers, Mills examines the transition from slavery to freedom in the nineteenth century, the early twentieth-century expansion of black consumerism, and the challenges of professionalization, licensing laws, and competition from white barbers. He finds that the profession played a significant though complicated role in twentieth-century racial politics: while the services of shaving and grooming were instrumental in the creation of socially acceptable black masculinity, barbering permitted the financial independence to maintain public spaces that fostered civil rights politics. This sweeping, engaging history of an iconic cultural establishment shows that black entrepreneurship was intimately linked to the struggle for equality.

Disciplining Women Alpha Kappa Alpha, Black Counterpublics, and the Cultural Politics of Black Sororities【電子書籍】[ Deborah Elizabeth Whaley ]

|

An interdisciplinary look Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA), the first historically Black sorority.

Black Greek-letter organizations offer many African Americans opportunities for activism, community-building, fostering cultural pride, and cultural work within the African American community. Disciplining Women focuses on the oldest Black Greek-letter sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha, established in 1908. In this innovative interdisciplinary analysis of AKA, Deborah Whaley combines ethnographic field work, archival research, oral history, and interpretive readings of popular culture and sorority rituals to examine the role of the Black sorority in women's everyday lives and more broadly within public life and politics. The study includes sorority members' stories of key cultural practices and rituals, including political participation, step dancing, pledging, hazing, and community organizing. While she remains critical of the shortcomings that plague many Black social organizations with activist programs, Whaley shows how AKA's calculated cultivation of sorority life demonstrates personal and group-directed discipline and illuminates how cultural practices intersect with politics and Black public life.

Jumping the Broom The Surprising Multicultural Origins of a Black Wedding Ritual【電子書籍】[ Tyler D. Parry ]
|

In this definitive history of a unique tradition, Tyler D. Parry untangles the convoluted history of the “broomstick wedding.” Popularly associated with African American culture, Parry traces the ritual’s origins to marginalized groups in the British Isles and explores how it influenced the marriage traditions of different communities on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. His surprising findings shed new light on the complexities of cultural exchange between peoples of African and European descent from the 1700s up to the twenty-first century.

Drawing from the historical records of enslaved people in the United States, British Romani, Louisiana Cajuns, and many others, Parry discloses how marginalized people found dignity in the face of oppression by innovating and reimagining marriage rituals. Such innovations have an enduring impact on the descendants of the original practitioners. Parry reveals how and why the simple act of “jumping the broom” captivates so many people who, on the surface, appear to have little in common with each other.

Black Existentialism Essays on the Transformative Thought of Lewis R. Gordon【

Few contemporary intellectuals have attempted to inform theory, the academy and social change as does Lewis Gordon. Following his own path of Fanon, Cesaire and Said, Gordon’s work is an urgent call to action that is critical ‘in the trying times’ in which we find ourselves.

In this important book, international scholars from many disciplines and areas of life engage in Gordon’s work to prod, rattle and rethink our thinking to inform and change our practices as humans in institutions, politics, and the personal, legal and social paradigms. The book focuses on the importance of radical theory and thinkers to push for projects of change in the area of Black Existentialism. Gordon’s now extensive oeuvre personifies this. The essays use the work of Lewis Gordon to demonstrate how theory and thought be can used for transformation of existence, antiracism and critiques of alterity, resistance, pedagogy, political action theory and disciplinary decadence in the academy and beyond.

Men in Black, first published in 1942, is a novel of Czech resistance to the occupying Germans in the early days of World War Two, and the struggle against the Gestapo, or Nazi secret police. The culminating act of the resistance is the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, head of the Gestapo, which would lead to massive reprisals, including the razing of the village of Lidice and the execution of many of its inhabitants (the original subtitle of the book was "A Novel about Lidice," but the book does not detail the massacre that occurred there). Men in Black is a moving, albeit fictional, account of the courage and sacrifice made by men and women during the war, and the brutality the Nazis imposed on those who dared to resist.

The Great Migration and the Democratic Party Black Voters and the Realignment of American Politics in the 20th Century【電子書籍】[ Keneshia N. Grant ]
|

Where Black people live has long been an important determinant of their ability to participate in political processes. The Great Migration significantly changed the way Democratic Party elites interacted with Black communities in northern cities, Detroit, New York, and Chicago. Many white Democratic politicians came to believe the growing pool of Black voters could help them reach their electoral goalsーand these politicians often changed their campaign strategies and positions to secure Black support. Furthermore, Black migrants were able to participate in politics because there were fewer barriers to Black political participations outside the South.

The Great Migration and the Democratic Party frames the Great Migration as an important economic and social event that also had serious political consequences. Keneshia Grant created one of the first listings of Black elected officials that classifies them based on their status as participants in the Great Migration. She also describes some of the policy/political concerns of the migrants. The Great Migration and the Democratic Party lays the groundwork for ways of thinking about the contemporary impact of Black migration on American politics.

Black Reconstruction in America Toward a History of the Part Which Black Folk Played in the Attempt to Reconstruct Democracy in America, 1860-1880【
|

After four centuries of bondage, the nineteenth century marked the long-awaited release of millions of black slaves. Subsequently, these former slaves attempted to reconstruct the basis of American democracy. W. E. B. Du Bois, one of the greatest intellectual leaders in United States history, evaluates the twenty years of fateful history that followed the Civil War, with special reference to the efforts and experiences of African Americans.

Du Bois's words best indicate the broader parameters of his work:"the attitude of any person toward this book will be distinctly influenced by his theories of the Negro race. If he believes that the Negro in America and in general is an average and ordinary human being, who under given environment develops like other human beings, then he will read this story and judge it by the facts adduced."

The plight of the white working class throughout the world is directly traceable to American slavery, on which modern commerce and industry was founded, Du Bois argues. Moreover, the resulting color caste was adopted, forwarded, and approved by white labor, and resulted in the subordination of colored labor throughout the world. As a result, the majority of the world's laborers became part of a system of industry that destroyed democracy and led to World War I and the Great Depression. This book tells that story.

Minorities and Deviance Coping Strategies of the Power-Poor【電子書籍】[ Pamela Black ]
|

Grounded in both current and original research, Minorities and Deviance, expands the definition of stress and its relationship to deviance, providing a better understanding the role stress can play in addiction, obsession, and self-harm. Focusing on ten types of relatively minor deviant behaviors, Pamela Black explores the stress engendered by minority group membership and the associated feelings of powerlessness and how this can serve as a significant source of stress in and of itself, but when combined with other stressors magnifies the possibility of deviance. Using theoretical constructs derived from Robert Agnew’s 1992 General Strain Theory, Black tests the effects of not only minority group membership and powerlessness as stressors, but also examines group differences in the effect of more traditional forms of stress: finances, health, and relationships.

Land Warfare since 1860 A Global History of Boots on the Ground【電子書籍】[ Jeremy Black ]
|

This cogent global history traces the evolution of land warfare since the start of the Crimean War. Jeremy Black argues that although it has always been critical to the outcome of conflicts worldwide, land warfare has become undervalued in comparison to air power in modern military thinking. In practice, land warfare was crucial during the American Civil War, the two world wars, and the conflicts of the Cold War. Indeed, the revival of great power confrontation has led to an urgent need to re-examine the entire contemporary period. Looking to the future, the book shows convincingly that we must consider the nature of the military for non-state actors as well for as the major powers.Ultimately, Black contends, there is no substitute for the control over territory provided by boots on the ground.

Joe Cassells offers the reader a superb memoir of the earliest days of World War I as seen through the eyes of a private soldier in one of Britain’s best regiments. The reader is given an account of the dark days of constant retreat before the German march on Paris, and on into the stalemate warfare in the trenches. The author offers his personal experiences in an easily read style as though he was telling it the reader personally.

This book truly is a delight since it offers the reader a first person account, a soldier's account and not simply the dry cold facts offered up by most records encountered by historians and military history readers.

Pullman Porters and the Rise of Protest Politics in Black America, 1925-1945【電子書籍】[ Beth Tompkins Bates ]

Between World War I and World War II, African Americans' quest for civil rights took on a more aggressive character as a new group of black activists challenged the politics of civility traditionally embraced by old-guard leaders in favor of a more forceful protest strategy. Beth Tompkins Bates traces the rise of this new protest politics ー which was grounded in making demands and backing them up with collective action ー by focusing on the struggle of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP) to form a union in Chicago, headquarters of the Pullman Company.

Bates shows how the BSCP overcame initial opposition from most of Chicago’s black leaders by linking its union message with the broader social movement for racial equality. As members of BSCP protest networks mobilized the black community around the quest for manhood rights and economic freedom, they broke down resistance to organized labor even as they expanded the boundaries of citizenship to include equal economic opportunity. By the mid-1930s, BSCP protest networks gained platforms at the national level, fusing Brotherhood activities first with those of the National Negro Congress and later with the March on Washington Movement. Lessons learned during this era guided the next generation of activists, who carried the black freedom struggle forward after World War II.

White Over Black American Attitudes toward the Negro, 1550-1812【電子書籍】[ Winthrop D. Jordan ]

In 1968, Winthrop D. Jordan set out in encyclopedic detail the evolution of white Englishmen’s and Anglo-Americans' perceptions of blacks, perceptions of difference used to justify race-based slavery, and liberty and justice for whites only. This second edition, with new forewords by historians Christopher Leslie Brown and Peter H. Wood, reminds us that Jordan’s text is still the definitive work on the history of race in America in the colonial era. Every book published to this day on slavery and racism builds upon his work; all are judged in comparison to it; none has surpassed it.

The Portland Black Panthers Empowering Albina and Remaking a City【電子書籍】[ Judson L. Jeffries ]

Portland, Oregon, though widely regarded as a liberal bastion, also has struggled historically with ethnic diversity; indeed, the 2010 census found it to be “America’s whitest major city.” In early recognition of such disparate realities, a group of African American activists in the 1960s formed a local branch of the Black Panther Party in the city’s Albina District to rally their community and be heard by city leaders. And as Lucas Burke and Judson Jeffries reveal, the Portland branch was quite different from the more famousーand infamousーOakland headquarters. Instead of parading through the streets wearing black berets and ammunition belts, Portland’s Panthers were more concerned with opening a health clinic and starting free breakfast programs for neighborhood kids. Though the group had been squeezed out of local politics by the early 1980s, its legacy lives on through the various activist groups in Portland that are still fighting many of the same battles.

Combining histories of the city and its African American community with interviews with former Portland Panthers and other key players, this long-overdue account adds complexity to our understanding of the protracted civil rights movement throughout the Pacific Northwest.

A V Ethel Willis White Book
