Gareth Carrol presents a collection of "modern idioms", which have become a part of our vocabulary in the past 50 years or so. In most cases, idioms such as "raining cats and dogs", that colour our everyday communication, are deeply rooted in culture and history. However, just like words, new idioms emerge in language, and many have entered our vocabulary through, TV, movies and the internet. These modern idioms can be dated very precisely. Jumping Sharks and Dropping Mics finds the origins of these idioms, and charts their development.

The Heart in the Hand of God【電子書籍】[ Katie King Carroll ]

There are many books written about life, marriage, and brokenness. This book is about what you do when everything is cracked and broken. Who do you turn to? I decided to stay around a secure circle of positive people, my church family, and learned to do for myself. The question in my spirit was, How do you take care of the small things around the house without asking the “male” to assist? Most of the time, they are looking for something in return. It’s all about managing oneself.

The basic things that go on around the home, do you know how to fix? Do you know which tools to use? Which hammer? Which screwdriver? Do you use a pipe wrench or an adjustable wrench? Do you know which one to use? Through all of this, I finally learned how to be independent of others and be totally dependent upon Christ.

Community And The Northwestern Logger Continuities And Changes In The Era Of The Spotted Owl【電子書籍】[ Matthew S. Carroll ]
|

It has often been said that natural resource and environmental problems cannot be solved without solving human problems. In this book, Matthew Carroll examines the economic and social circumstances of northwestern U.S. loggers in the face of shifts in environmental politics, dramatic reductions in timber harvest levels on federal lands, and changing technology and market forcesーamong other factors that are rapidly transforming their industry, their livelihoods, and their communities. Drawing upon sociological fieldwork in logging communities that he conducted at various times over a period of nearly a decade and using the spotted owl-old growth controversy as a case study, Carroll provides a rich and detailed picture of life among northwestern loggers. He lays out the human dimensions and dilemmas of the timber crisis. Expanding it from the oversimplified owl-versus- logger confrontation, he puts these issues in a historical and policy context and suggests parallels to other controversies such as public grazing and federal or state river protection. Carrol’s work revives the concept of occupational community and shows ways it can be used to understand the dynamics of rural occupations linked to resource extraction.

National Book Award Finalist: A biologist's "thoroughly enjoyable" account of the expeditions that unearthed the history of life on our planet ( Publishers Weekly).

Not so long ago, most of our world was an unexplored wilderness. Our sense of its age was vague and vastly off the mark, and much of the knowledge of our own species' history was a set of fantastic myths and fairy tales. But scientists were about to embark on an amazing new era of understanding.

From the New York Times?bestselling author of The Big Picture, this book leads us on a rousing voyage that recounts the most important discoveries in two centuries of natural history: from Darwin's trip around the world to Charles Walcott's discovery of pre-Cambrian life in the Grand Canyon; from Louis and Mary Leakey's investigation of our deepest past in East Africa to the trailblazers in modern laboratories who have located a time clock in our DNA. Filled with the same sense of adventure that spurred on these extraordinary men and women, Remarkable Creatures is a "stirring introduction to the wonder of evolutionary biology" ( Kirkus Reviews).

"Charming and enlightening." ー San Francisco Chronicle

"As fast-paced as a detective story." ー Nature

The Long Range Desert Group in the Aegean【電子書籍】[ Brendan O'Carroll ]
|

A history of the British Army unit's deployment to and defense of a group of islands between Greece and Turkey during World War II.
Shortly after the invasion of Sicily, in order to distract German attention from the Italian campaign, Churchill ordered the occupation of the Dodecanese Islands in the Aegean.
The Long Range Desert Group, retraining in Lebanon, were now part of Raiding Forces, Middle East, along with the Special Boat Service and No 30 Commando. In support of 3,000 regulars in 234 Brigade, the LRDG landed covertly on Leros establishing observation posts, reporting movement of enemy shipping and aircraft.
In October the LRDG were ordered to assault the island of Levitha, losing forty highly skilled men killed or captured. The Germans invaded Leros with overwhelming force on 12 November 1943, five days later the battle was over. While many British troops were captured most of the LRDG and SBS escaped. Their individual stories make for enthralling reading.
A measure of the intensity of the fighting is the fact that the LRDG lost more men in three months in the Aegean than in three years in the desert operating behind enemy lines.
The author, an acknowledged expert on the LRDG uses official sources, both British and German, and individual accounts to piece together the full story of this dramatic, costly but little-known campaign. It is a valuable addition to the history of special forces in the Second World War.
Praise for The Long Range Desert Group in the Aegean
"O'Carroll provides an interesting and informative read about a little known action by a World War II era special operations unit and an important part of SOF history."

Grave History Death, Race, and Gender in Southern Cemeteries【電子書籍】[ Carroll West ]

Grave sites not only offer the contemporary viewer the physical markers of those remembered but also a wealth of information about the era in which the cemeteries were created. These markers hold keys to our historical past and allow an entry point of interrogation about who is represented, as well as how and why.

Grave History is the first volume to use southern cemeteries to interrogate and analyze southern society and the construction of racial and gendered hierarchies from the antebellum period through the dismantling of Jim Crow. Through an analysis of cemeteries throughout the Southーincluding Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, and Virginia, from the nineteenth through twenty-first centuriesーthis volume demonstrates the importance of using the cemetery as an analytical tool for examining power relations, community formation, and historical memory.

Grave History draws together an interdisciplinary group of scholars, including historians, anthropologists, archaeologists, and social-justice activists to investigate the history of racial segregation in southern cemeteries and what it can tell us about how ideas regarding race, class, and gender were informed and reinforced in these sacred spaces.

Each chapter is followed by a learning activity that offers readers an opportunity to do the work of a historian and apply the insights gleaned from this book to their own analysis of cemeteries. These activities, designed for both the teacher and the student, as well as the seasoned and the novice cemetery enthusiast, encourage readers to examine cemeteries for their physical organization, iconography, sociodemographic landscape, and identity politics.

Race News Black Journalists and the Fight for Racial Justice in the Twentieth Century【電子書籍】[ Fred Carroll ]
|

Once distinct, the commercial and alternative black press began to crossover with one another in the 1920s. The porous press culture that emerged shifted the political and economic motivations shaping African American journalism. It also sparked disputes over radical politics that altered news coverage of some of the most momentous events in African American history. Starting in the 1920s, Fred Carroll traces how mainstream journalists incorporated coverage of the alternative press's supposedly marginal politics of anti-colonialism, anti-capitalism, and black separatism into their publications. He follows the narrative into the 1950s, when an alternative press re-emerged as commercial publishers curbed progressive journalism in the face of Cold War repression. Yet, as Carroll shows, journalists achieved significant editorial independence, and continued to do so as national newspapers modernized into the 1960s. Alternative writers' politics seeped into commercial papers via journalists who wrote for both presses and through professional friendships that ignored political boundaries. Compelling and incisive, Race News reports the dramatic history of how black press culture evolved in the twentieth century.

Illegal Jesus - Young Immigrant Hispanic Males in Strata Fractured America - An Invitation to Americans from Within【電子書籍】[ Ted L Carroll ]

|

"Illegal Jesus" is a research essay uncovering the intricacies of young, Hispanic, immigrant (legal or otherwise) males and exposing the symptomatic challenges of acculturation and enculturation in contemporary America. Specifically, the struggles of Hispanic extended families and newly confronted dilemmas to effective familial interpersonal dynamics, role expectations, and interactive realities are discussed in the context of modern and post-modern sociological approaches. A Family Systems Approach is encouraged as a means of seeking solutions to America's, often undermining, social services system. More specifically, Carroll offers one simple move, the expansion of a currently in-place and working policy: Obama's Parole in Place. Carroll's intent, via the essay, is to spark increased awareness, interest, conversation, and action concerning an, ultimate, threat to American hegemony and the survival of humanity.

Physiological Problems Of Bomber Crews In The Eighth Air Force During WWII【電子書籍】[ Major James J. Carroll ]
|

Aviation physiology is a highly relevant field to flyers of unpressurized aircraft that flew at altitudes in excess of 25,000 feet. Crew members had to contend with severe environmental factors while flying long bombing missions during WWII. The limits of human physiology must be the main concern of any battle plan involving flyers and fatality/mortality rates should be the primary focus in evaluating the success or failure of such a plan. The purpose of this research project is to determine if human factors were overlooked intentionally or by accident. If they were overlooked unintentionally, then what was done to resolve the physiological problems of the aircrews? The project will also underscore the continued need to address the human machine during any plan in today's demanding aviation environment.
Chapter one explores whether or not the limits of the human being was taken into account when the WWII bombing planners developed AWPD-1. It provides an insight into why AWPD-1 was created without regard to the aircrew members, and how this neglect could have possibly been remedied. Chapter two examines the machines of the day, in particular the B-17, to see if it was ready to carry out the assigned missions envisioned by the war planners. The early wartime experience of the B-17 by the Royal Air Force was disappointing, but nevertheless it was looked upon by the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as the ultimate bomber that could complete any assignment. This chapter also provides some insight into a "typical" mission the B-17 aircrew had to endure and the aircraft's ability to carry out the assigned bombing missions. Chapter three deals with the physiological problems experienced by the aircrews and what was done to alleviate them. Chapter four focuses on the non-combat accident rates of the Eighth Air Force, what they meant, and how the leadership reacted to them.

I would like more to give to others”

“There is so much in it. It’s like a Bible. I’d need to be reading it over and over to hopefully someday absorb it all. Even the summary of the context of the books of the Bible makes such a difference to know even that much when you have never done Bible study.”

“I have just read the book and then recited my Rosary in a world rampant with relativism and secularism. It is a joy to read such a refreshing book. It has lifted my spirit. Praise God it has pointed out to me that in a world filled with negativity it is good to be tuned into the joy that only the Holy Spirit can bring”

“It is quite a lovely book that we are enjoying each day when we read it. It is surely helping us in our Catholic faith. As soon as we finish reading this book we will surely mature more in our faith for that is the most important thing that we have always desired to have”

“I like the book so much I don’t want it to end”

“The summary is very good.
Ethnography in Unstable Places is a collection of ethnographic accounts of everyday situations in places undergoing dramatic political transformation. Offering vivid case studies that range from the Middle East and Africa to Europe, Russia, and Southeast Asia, the contributing anthropologists narrate particular circumstances of social and political transformationーin contexts of colonialism, war and its aftermath, social movements, and post?Cold War climatesーfrom the standpoints of ordinary people caught up in and having to cope with the collapse or reconfiguration of the states in which they live.
Using grounded ethnographic detail to explore the challenges to the anthropological imagination that are posed by modern uncertainties, the contributors confront the ambiguities and paradoxes that exist across the spectrum of human cultures and geographies. The collection is framed by introductory and concluding chapters that highlight different dimensions of the book’s interrelated themesーagency and ethnographic reflexivity, identity and ethics, and the inseparability of political economy and interpretivism.
Ethnography in Unstable Places will interest students and specialists in social anthropology, sociology, political science, international relations, and cultural studies.

Contributors. Eve Darian-Smith, Howard J. Dressing the Dead in Classical Antiquity【電子書籍】[ Maureen Carroll ]
|

Naked we come into the world, but we are extraordinarily unlucky if naked we leave it. It is a human reaction to cover the dead with textiles. This volume presents the results of new and ground-breaking research in the UK and abroad on clothing and textiles in the context of death and burial in Classical Antiquity, from the fifth century BC to the fifth century AD. The geographical scope encompasses the Mediterranean, as well as the European, Asian, Egyptian and North African lands that were part of the Graeco-Roman world or that interacted with it in a variety of ways.Investigations of funerary rituals thus far have focused on grave markers, burial ritual, grave goods, and skeletal material, while the roles of clothing and textiles in these rituals are less well understood. The topic is explored by studying a variety of different types of evidence: textiles in graves, such as shrouds and coverlets or the clothing in which the dead were dressed; clothing and textiles associated with death rituals, such as mourning dress; funerary portraits in sculpture and painting that depict the deceased dressed to convey messages about identities; and jewellery and dress accessories worn in death and included in the grave. The papers presented here offer tantalising glimpses of the role of clothing, textiles and bodily adornment as social markers, ostentatious displays, and expressions of identities in Classical Antiquity

The Saviour Syndrome Searching for Hope and Meaning in an Age of Unbelief【電子書籍】[ John Carroll ]
|

Who do we look up to? Christ the Savior is no more. In the modern West, the life of the most significant figure in the history of the culture is assumed to be obsolete. What remains?

Quite a lot, actually. In this groundbreaking work, acclaimed sociologist John Carroll argues that humans in the Western tradition are, by their nature, savior seeking. What he describes as a 'savior syndrome' impels humans to find someone, or some equivalent, to show the way to a better life and counter the quintessentially modern ordeal of unbelief.

Drawing on literature, history, and a range of popular culture sources from the Sopranos to the Bachelorette, he demonstrates how we are constantly investing people around usーteachers, leaders, performers, athletes, even childrenーwith exemplary or transcendent qualities that we look up to and identify with, and strike to emulate. Jesus himself may be no more, but the archetype he founded continues to resonate long after his eclipse.

Diplomatic Asylum Legal Norms and Political Reality in Latin American Relations【電子書籍】[ Carroll Neale Ronning ]
|

The legal status of the institution of diplomatic asylum really presents two separate questions. (I) Is there evidence that states have regarded the practice of granting such asylum to political refugees as sanctioned by a rule of international law? (2) Assuming this to be the case, does the available evidence make it possible to define a "political refugee" and to determine which party to a dispute has the right to decide upon this question? While in many cases the two questions are not dearly separated in the discussions between the parties involved, they will be treated separately in the following pages. Part one will attempt to answer this question: Assuming the political nature of an offence can be establish ed, is there evidence that states have regarded the practice of granting diplomatic asylum as sanctioned by a rule of international law? Obviously, the two questions cannot be separated entirely but it seems advisable to try to isolate them as much as possible. CHAPTER I NATURE AND SCOPE OF THE PROBLEM The term "asylum" is used to identify such a variety of phenomena that the following distinctions must be made before the problem can be properly discussed I. Between diplomatic and territorial asylum. The importance of this distinction was pointed out by the International Court of Justice in the Colombian-Peruvian Asylum Case,l often referred to as the Haya de la Torre Case.

Beyond Me Poems about Spirit in Scripture, Psychotherapy, and Life【電子書籍】[ Carroll E. Arkema ]
|

Beyond Me seeks to capture and convey the wonder, mystery, and healing power of the Divine Spirit and its activity in human beings, life, and relationships. This Divine Presence is often felt or glimpsed as Mystery--beyond us, yet within us--which grabs our attention and pulls us into a deeper and fuller exploration of what life and human existence is all about. As an ordained Presbyterian minister serving as a Pastoral Psychotherapist, Carroll E. Arkema is especially thrilled and fascinated to notice and then capture in his poems the congruency between psychodynamics, spiritual growth, and scriptural stories. His interdisciplinary perspective illuminates the complexity of the divine/human relationship, tracing how people change, heal, and are sanctified, while also resisting such change and growth. Personal experiences and scriptural accounts throw light on each other, and Arkema shows poetry to be a format capable of holding and integrating both.

This book will carry the reader back to first principles, and point plainly and clearly to the land marks of 1776, as fixed by the signers of the declaration of our independence, and to rouse the patriot to a just sense of our blood-bought privileges and the necessity of preserving them pure and undefiled, has been the constant aim of the author. It presents biographies of fifty-eight individuals, all engaged in the accomplishment of a single object, the independence of the United State. The author has labored to be concise without being obscure, to inform the understanding without burdening the memory. He has introduced many apothegms, intending to improve the mind and mend the heart. The causes that led to the revolution, it's interesting progress, its happy termination and the formation of our federal government, are all amply delineated. The ZETA Message: Connecting All Beings in Oneness【電子書籍】[ Judy Carroll ]
|

"The Zeta Message" is a powerful non-fiction account of author Judy Carroll’s lifelong contact with the gray extraterrestrials known as “Zeta Reticulans”. It provides a detailed description of an average Australian family who, in 2000, suddenly found themselves caught up in full-on and seemingly frightening contact involving flashing lights, black-clad figures appearing in bedrooms in the middle of the night and children waking screaming in terror. Introduced by a mutual friend, Judy assisted this family to open up to deeper levels of understanding and conscious awareness as the fear barrier was gradually broken down to reveal incredible depths of love and wisdom. This book is excitingly different in that, for the first time, answers and explanations are given on the true meaning behind the alien abduction scenario, and its implications for the future of Planet Earth and her people. The two authors find that in their previous lives, they occupied Zeta bodies, before reincarnating as humans in Australia. A companion volume, "Human by Day, Zeta by Night", dramatizes the events herein described in a fictional manner, and provides ground-breaking information as well as deeper teaching and knowledge on the UFO and abduction phenomenon.
Author’s website - www.ufogreyinfo.com.

Beyond Black Hawk Down Intervention, Nation-Building, and Insurgency in Somalia, 1992-1995【電子書籍】[ Jonathan Carroll ]
|

The first historical look at what happened during the Somalia intervention; what went wrong and what lessons we should learn from it.

The story of Black Hawk Down is a familiar one. On 3 October 1993 two Black Hawk helicopters were shot down, and in the ensuing Battle of Mogadishu eighteen Americans and hundreds of Somalis were killed. But very few appreciate that this was just one day in a two-and-a-half-year operation; the most ambitious attempt in history to rebuild a nation. The United States sought to show the world that the UN could rebuild a country, but in a dire foreshadowing of the failed efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan a decade later, the intervention in Somalia was plagued with political infighting, policy mismatch, confusion, and fatal assumptions.

In 1992 Somalia saw the largest ever deployment of American troops to the continent of Africa, and 1993 brought the first UN-led peace enforcement mission and the most ambitious experiment in nation-building. In Beyond Black Hawk Down, Jonathan Carroll provides the first scholarly military history of the entire intervention, from its early and largely successful humanitarian phase in 1992 through to the ultimate withdrawal of UN forces in 1995. Carroll dispels the myths and misunderstandings surrounding one of the most infamous episodes of the 1990s to present a new interpretation of events, most notably by including the Somali perspective, to argue what went so wrong in Somalia, and more importantly, why.

Understanding the intervention in Somalia, its successes and the roots of its failures, is invaluable to contemporary debates on concepts of nation-building and counterinsurgency. Moreover, the increasing regularity of inter-state and intra-state conflicts across the world means the international community will continue to be called upon to intervene in other failed or failing states in the future. Beyond Black Hawk Down is an important new history that will inform the shape and nature of future military interventions.

Orthodox Christian Material Culture Of People and Things in the Making of Heaven【電子書籍】[ Timothy Carroll ]

Although much has been written on the making of art objects as a means of engaging in creative productions of the self (most famously Alfred Gell’s work), there has been very little written on Orthodox Christianity and its use of material within religious self-formation. Eastern Orthodox Christianity is renowned for its artistry and the aesthetics of its worship being an integral part of devout practice. Yet this is an area with little ethnographic exploration available and even scarcer ethnographic attention given to the material culture of Eastern Christianity outside the traditional ‘homelands’ of the greater Levant and Eastern Europe.

Drawing from and building upon Gell’s work, Carroll explores the uses and purposes of material culture in Eastern Orthodox Christian worship. Drawing on three years of ethnographic fieldwork in a small Antiochian Orthodox parish in London, Carroll focusses on a study of ecclesiastical fabric but places this within the wider context of Orthodox material ecology in Britain. This ethnographic exploration leads to discussion of the role of materials in the construction of religious identity, material understandings of religion, and pathways of pilgrimatic engagement and religious movement across Europe.

In a religious tradition characterised by repetition and continuity, but also as sensuously tactile, this book argues that material objects are necessary for the continual production of Orthodox Christians as art-like subjects. It is an important contribution to the corpus of literature on the anthropology of material culture and art and the anthropology of religion.

The Politics of Imperial Memory in France, 1850?1900【電子書籍】[ Christina B. Carroll ]

By highlighting the connections between domestic political struggles and overseas imperial structures, The Politics of Imperial Memory in France, 1850?1900 explains how and why French Republicans embraced colonial conquest as a central part of their political platform. Christina B. Carroll explores the meaning and value of empire in late-nineteenth-century France, arguing that ongoing disputes about the French state's political organization intersected with racialized beliefs about European superiority over colonial others in French imperial thought.
For much of this period, French writers and politicians did not always differentiate between continental and colonial empire. By employing a range of sourcesーfrom newspapers and pamphlets to textbooks and novelsーCarroll demonstrates that the memory of older continental imperial models shaped French understandings of, and justifications for, their new colonial empire. She shows that the slow identification of the two types of empire emerged due to a politicized campaign led by colonial advocates who sought to defend overseas expansion against their opponents. This new model of colonial empire was shaped by a complicated set of influences, including political conflict, the legacy of both Napoleons, international competition, racial science, and French experiences in the colonies.
The Politics of Imperial Memory in France, 1850?1900 skillfully weaves together knowledge from its wide-ranging source base to articulate how the meaning and history of empire became deeply intertwined with the meaning and history of the French nation.

Who Gets to Go Back-to-the-Land? Gender and Race in U.S. Self-Sufficiency Popular Culture【電子書籍】[ Valerie Padilla Carroll ]

In Who Gets to Go Back-to-the-Land?, Valerie Padilla Carroll examines a variety of media from the last century that proselytized self-sufficiency as a solution to the economic instability, environmental destruction, and perceived disintegration of modern America. In the early twentieth century, books already advocated an escape for the urban, white-collar male. The suggestion became more practical during the Great Depression, and magazines pushed self-sufficiency lifestyles. By the 1970s, the idea was reborn in newsletters and other media as a radical response to a damaged world, allowing activists to promote the simple life as environmental, gender, and queer justice. At the century’s end, a great variety of media promoted self-sufficiency as the solution to a different set of problems, from survival at the millennium to wanderlust of millennials.

Nevertheless, these utopian narratives are written overwhelmingly for a particular audienceーone that is white, male, and white-collar. Padilla Carroll’s archival research of the books, newspapers, magazines, newsletters, websites, blogs, and videos promoting the life of the agrarian smallholder illuminates how embedded race, class, gender, and heteronormative dogmas in these texts reinforce dominant power ideologies and ignore the experiences of marginalized people. Still, Padilla Carroll also highlights how those left out have continued to demand inclusion by telling their own stories of self-sufficiency, rewriting and reimagining the movement to be collaborative, inclusive, and rooted in both human and ecological justice.
