Intelligibility, Oral Communication, and the Teaching of Pronunciation【電子書籍】[ John M. Levis ]

A proper understanding of intelligibility is at the heart of effective pronunciation teaching, and with it, successful teaching of speaking and listening. Far from being an optional 'add-it-on-if-we-have-time' language feature, pronunciation is essential because of its tremendous impact on speech intelligibility. Pronunciation dramatically affects the ability of language learners to make themselves understood and to understand the speech of others. But not all elements of pronunciation are equally important. Some affect intelligibility a great deal, while others do not. With a strong emphasis on classroom practice and how pronunciation teaching can be more effectively approached in different teaching contexts, this book provides an important resource for pronunciation researchers, with a distinctly practical focus. It shows how intelligibility research informs pronunciation teaching within communicative classrooms, enabling language teachers to incorporate intelligibility findings into their teaching. Professionals interested in oral communication, pronunciation, and speech perception will find the book fascinating.

From then on, he began to teach informally in his room and eventually, when more and more disciples came, he started giving formal talks and answering questions from seekers.

The number of his disciples continued to grow and then as foreign disciples also started visiting him, he began giving discourses in English. Unclenching Our Fists Abusive Men on the Journey to Nonviolence【電子書籍】[ Sara Elinoff Acker ]

This book features eleven first-person stories of men from diverse class and racial backgrounds who have made a long-term commitment to end their physical and emotional abuse and controlling behaviors. These men speak frankly about the abuse they inflicted on their families, what it took to get them to face themselves, and how they feel about the damage they have caused. All participated in violence intervention programs, some for as long as ten years. To put a face on violence and to encourage activism for reform, most of the eleven have allowed their photos and real names to be used in the book.

Surrounding this material are chapters that provide context about the disputes among researchers about whether batterer intervention programs work (only a small number of batterers renounce their abuse) and chapters that address the reactions of partners to these stories. "When the Man You Love is Abusive" is designed to caution women not to be manipulated by accounts of change and to outline the stages men need to pass through in the long process of becoming accountable. "The Last Word: Voices of Survivors" ends the book with a focus group discussion in which former abuse victims and advocates respond candidly to the men's stories.

A Superintelligence is Watching Over Us【電子書籍】[ Antonio Jose Reyes ]

This book presents the ten principles that support the existence of a superintelligence that created, monitors, and sustains the universe and life. The principles are based on current scientific knowledge, and when they are analyzed, a bizarre force is required to explain their operation in the cosmos. This bizarre force seems supreme in intelligence beyond human comprehension and control. We invite you to read and enjoy this content with an open mind and profound awe. The order and design of the cosmos require tremendous energy, information, programming, and intention, which need a supreme intelligence. The microscopic and macroscopic worlds are vast and complex but exhibit order and design. It is more probable that a superintelligence made this universe with design and order than it was created by itself. Most of the spontaneous manifestations occur in chaos. When disorder arises in our daily lives, it takes the intention and the work of intelligence to bring back order. The light exists to allow the animal kingdom to see, liquid water for animals to drink, food to eat, and specific earth gravity to walk around. How was the honeybee designed to feed men and animals? How do the solar flares create the aurora borealis for men to enjoy? How does photosynthesis produce oxygen from water and carbon monoxide in the leaves of trees to feed the respiratory chain in every living creature's mitochondrion to create energy? Is there an occult intention? The intention to serve life is all around. The purpose is carrying on constantly based on design and order. The ten principles that support the existence of a superintelligence are majestic and scientifically paradoxical. Every time we read this evidence, it convinces us more profoundly of the existence of a superintelligence who loves and watches over us constantly.

The Power of Revival Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Baptism in the Spirit, and Preaching on Fire【電子書籍】[ Dongjin Park ]

"Lloyd-Jones's Reformed doctrine of Spirit baptism The Welsh minister Martyn Lloyd-Jones (1899-1981) was one of the most influential preachers of the twentieth century. His preaching was grounded in his view on the baptism of the Holy Spirit, but his pneumatology is often seen as a departure from his Reformed heritage. In The Power of Revival, Dongjin Park explores how Lloyd-Jones's preaching was kindled by his distinctly Reformed view of Spirit baptism. By tracing Lloyd-Jones's writings and sources, Park shows how Lloyd-Jones's theology of Spirit baptism was less an embrace of charismatic and Pentecostal theology than a reappropriation of Puritan emphasis on experiential faith. Lloyd-Jones's revivalistic urgency, fueled by the Spirit's power to ignite preaching and holy living, found its spark in Calvinistic revivalism. The Power of Revival sheds light on Lloyd-Jones and Reformed theology and encourages readers to follow his example of relying on the Spirit"--

Knee Deep in Grace presents the life story of Dipa Ma Barua, along with the essential spiritual teachings that make her a towering figure in contemporary Buddhism. While she experienced fame in her lifetime and had a following of many Burmese, Indian, and American students, she was like the women saints of the Vedas, remarkable women...from the dawn of history...who achieved realization while cleaning their homes and raising their children (Daughters of the Goddess: Women Saints of India).Dipa Ma was a primary teacher of Sharon Salzberg Jack Kornfield, and Joseph Goldstein, who have been among the most influential importers of Buddhism to America. Through the centers they founded and the teachers trained in them (the author among them), the example and teaching of Dipa Ma reach multitudes. Jack Kornfield described the power of Ma's influence: Without anything said or done, just the impact of meeting a person so developed can be enough to change one's whole way of life.Knee Deep in Grace is filled with intimate stories collected over a period of ten years, not only from prominent meditation teachers in the West but from Dipa Ma's daughter and grandson and her Calcutta students. Dipa Ma addressed her teaching to ordinary people in her apartment complex and her extended family, and her iconoclastic style of daily life immersion practice brought many of her students to awakening.

Drawing on decades of wide-ranging interviews with Lewis, Jon Meacham writes of how this great-grandson of a slave and son of an Alabama tenant farmer was inspired by the Bible and his teachers in nonviolence, Reverend James Lawson and Martin Luther King, Jr., to put his life on the line in the service of what Abraham Lincoln called "the better angels of our nature." From an early age, Lewis learned that nonviolence was not only a tactic but a philosophy, a biblical imperative, and a transforming reality. At the age of four, Lewis, ambitious to become a minister, practiced by preaching to his family's chickens. When his mother cooked one of the chickens, the boy refused to eat it--his first act, he wryly recalled, of nonviolent protest. Integral to Lewis's commitment to bettering the nation was his faith in humanity and in God--and an unshakable belief in the power of hope. Meacham calls Lewis "as important to the founding of a modern and multiethnic twentieth- and twenty-first-century America as Thomas Jefferson and James Madison and Samuel Adams were to the initial creation of the Republic itself in the eighteenth century." A believer in the injunction that one should love one's neighbor as oneself, Lewis was arguably a saint in our time, risking limb and life to bear witness for the powerless in the face of the powerful. In many ways he brought a still-evolving nation closer to realizing its ideals, and his story offers inspiration and illumination for Americans today who are working for social and political change.

The Teaching of History【電子書籍】[ Pasquale Villari ]

Pasquale Villari (1827-1917), a historian, philosopher, university professor, and Freemason, was one of the great protagonists of Italian culture in his time. A native of Naples, he was a student of Basilio Puoti and Francesco De Sanctis, and in his youth, he took part in the revolutionary uprisings of 1848 against the Bourbons. Subsequently, in 1849, he went into exile in Florence. He served as a senator of the Kingdom of Italy in the 15th legislature and as Minister of Public Education from 1891 to 1892. He authored numerous historical essays, including biographies of Girolamo Savonarola and Niccol? Machiavelli, but is remembered above all for his seminal studies on the Southern Question, which were collected in the work Lettere meridionali.
He was long concerned with the Philosophy of History, and for him, History was a true life mission.
The essay L'insegnamento della Storia (The Teaching of History) is based on the inaugural address for the 1868-69 academic year and was read by Pasquale Villari on November 16, 1868, in the Great Hall of the Higher Institute of Florence. In our opinion, this address is still very relevant, extremely modern, and represents a correct approach for disciplines such as History and Historiography. It is a speech that everyone, from history teachers to university students, should read and, above all, understand.
