Written in a compelling yet analytical style, the book navigates the sociological implications of a gradual shift away from traditional religious structures. Veterans of Future Wars A Study in Student Activism【電子書籍】[ Donald W. Whisenhunt ]

The Veterans of Future Wars (VFW) was a short-lived student movement that came in response to the bonus paid to World War I veterans in 1936. The VFW began at Princeton University, but quickly spread across the United States, attracting attention from all groups of American citizens. It was extremely popular on college campuses, but it engendered vocal and intemperate opposition from the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, chambers of commerce, and other citizens. The student leaders were branded as Communists, Fascists, or other similar subversive groups. The group attracted attention from political leaders; some members of Congress were supportive, but others attacked the group on the floor of the House of Representatives. The student group ended about four or five months after it began. Despite its short life, it was a successful movement that attracted wide support and caused serious discussion about the role of the federal government in providing bonuses to veterans.

Drones and the Future of Air Warfare The Evolution of Remotely Piloted Aircraft【電子書籍】[ Michael P. Kreuzer ]

This book examines the evolution of airpower and specifically the growth and proliferation of Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPAs).

While most existing literature examines either the law or ethics of RPAs, and some newer scholarship looks to the battlefield effectiveness (the gains from strikes versus the potential for ‘blowback, etc.), this work investigates it from a broader military perspective. It examines the strategy for employment of RPAs across the spectrum of warfare, the potential deterrent value of RPAs in some circumstances, and the resulting ability of RPAs to fundamentally shift the character of when and how wars are fought. The central aim of this book is to evaluate the role of ‘drones’ in warfare to date, and make basic projections on how states will adopt RPAs and UCAVs in the future. At the core is the goal of answering a broad, underlying research question: How will the RPA innovation impact military strategy and international security?

This book will be of much interest to students of airpower, drone warfare, military and strategic studies, security studies and IR.

Online Courts and the Future of Justice【電子書籍】[ Richard Susskind ]

Our court system is struggling. It is too costly to deliver justice for all but the few, too slow to satisfy those who can access it. Yet the values implicit in disputes being resolved in person, and in public, are fundamental to how we have imagined the fair resolution of disputes for centuries. Could justice be delivered online? The idea has excited and appalled in equal measure, promising to bring justice to all, threatening to strike at the heart of what we mean by justice. With online courts now moving from idea to reality, we are looking at the most fundamental change to our justice system for centuries, but the public understanding of and debate about the revolution is only just beginning. In Online Courts and the Future of Justice Richard Susskind, a pioneer of rethinking law for the digital age, confronts the challenges facing our legal system and the potential for technology to bring much needed change. Drawing on years of experience leading the discussion on conceiving and delivering online justice, Susskind here charts and develops the public debate. Against a background of austerity politics and cuts to legal aid, the public case for online courts has too often been framed as a business case by both sides of the debate. Are online courts preserving the public bottom line by finding efficiencies? Or sacrificing the interests of the many to deliver cut price justice? Susskind broadens the debate by making the moral case (whether online courts are required by principles of justice) and the jurisprudential case (whether online courts are compatible with our understanding of judicial process and constitutional rights) for delivering justice online.

The Levant Express The Arab Uprisings, Human Rights, and the Future of the Middle East【電子書籍】[ Micheline R. Ishay ]

A surprisingly hopeful assessment of the prospects for human rights in the Middle East, and a blueprint for advancing them

The enormous sense of optimism unleashed by the Arab Spring in 2011 soon gave way to widespread suffering and despair. Of the many popular uprisings against autocratic regimes, Tunisia’s now stands alone as a beacon of hope for sustainable human rights progress. Libya is a failed state; Egypt returned to military dictatorship; the Gulf States suppressed popular protests and tightened control; and Syria and Yemen are ravaged by civil war. Challenging the widely shared pessimism among regional experts, Micheline Ishay charts bold and realistic pathways for human rights in a region beset by political repression, economic distress, sectarian conflict, a refugee crisis, and violence against women. With due attention to how patterns of revolution and counterrevolution play out in different societies and historical contexts, Ishay reveals the progressive potential of subterranean human rights forces and offers strategies for transforming current realities in the Middle East.

Dreams of a Lifetime How Who We Are Shapes How We Imagine Our Future【電子書籍】[ Karen A. Cerulo ]

How social status shapes our dreams of the future and inhibits the lives we envision for ourselves

Most of us understand that a person’s place in society can close doors to opportunity, but we also tend to think that anything is possible when someone dreams about what might be. Dreams of a Lifetime reveals that what and how we dreamーand whether we believe our dreams can actually come trueーare tied to our social class, gender, race, age, and life events.

Karen Cerulo and Janet Ruane argue that our social location shapes the seemingly private and unique life of our minds. We are all free to dream about possibilities, but not all dreamers are equal. Cerulo and Ruane show how our social position ingrains itself on our mind’s eye, quietly influencing the nature of our dreams, whether we embrace dreaming or dream at all, and whether we believe that our dreams, from the attainable to the improbable, can become realities. They explore how inequalities stemming from social disadvantages pattern our dreams for ourselves, and how sociocultural disparities in how we dream exacerbate social inequalities and limit the life paths we believe are open to us.

Drawing on a wealth of original interviews with people from diverse social backgrounds, Dreams of a Lifetime demonstrates how the study of our dreams can provide new avenues for understanding and combating inequalityーincluding inequalities that precede action or outcome.

The age of denial is over, we are told. Yet emissions continue to rise while gimmicks, graft, and green- washing distract the public from the climate violence suffered by the vulnerable. This timely, interdisciplinary contribution to the environmental humanities draws on the latest climatology, the first shoots of an energy transition, critical theory, Earth's paleoclimate history, and trends in border violence to answer the most pressing question of our age: Why do we continue to squander the short time we have left?

The symptoms suggest society's inability to adjust is profound. Near Portland, militias incapable of accepting that the world is warming respond to a wildfire by hunting for imaginary left-wing arsonists. Europe erects nets in the Aegean Sea to capture migrants fleeing drought and war. An airline claims to be carbon neutral thanks to bogus cheap offsets. Drone strikes hit people living along the aridity line. As Western societies are becoming increasingly mixed-race, demographic change is transforming politics. Over half of American babies are non-white, and by the end of the century, minorities and those of mixed race are projected to form the majority in the UK and other countries. The early stages of this transformation have led to a populist disruption, tearing a path through the usual politics of left and right. One of the most crucial challenges of our time is to enable conservatives as well as cosmopolitans to view whiteshift as a positive development.

In this groundbreaking book, political scientist Eric Kaufmann examines the evidence to explore ethnic change in Western Europe and North America. Tracing four ways of dealing with this transformation - fight, repress, flight and join - he charts different scenarios and calls for us to move beyond empty talk about national identity. If we want to avoid more radical political divisions, he argues, we have to open up debate about the future of white majorities.

Deeply thought provoking, Whiteshift offers a wealth of data to redefine the way we discuss race in the twenty-first century.

Kant's Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics【電子書籍】[ Immanuel Kant ]

In "Kant's Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics," Immanuel Kant articulates a foundational inquiry into the nature, limitations, and possibilities of human knowledge. Framed as an accessible guide to his critical philosophy, this work seeks to address the essential question of how metaphysics can emerge as a legitimate science. Kant employs a rigorous yet precise literary style, enriched with systematic argumentation and clear exposition, which challenges existing metaphysical frameworks while seeking a common ground between empiricism and rationalism. This text serves as a precursor to his more extensive critiques, emphasizing the need for a critical examination of the faculties of human reason. Immanuel Kant, an eminent figure of the Enlightenment, wrote this work in response to the controversies surrounding metaphysics during his time, particularly the opposing schools of thought advocating for rationalism and empiricism. His revolutionary ideas on epistemology and ethics, alongside his grounding in mathematics and physics, provided him with a unique lens through which to analyze the metaphysical claims prevalent in philosophical discourse. His endeavor reflects both his intellectual heritage and his pioneering attempts to redefine the boundaries of philosophy. "Kant's Prolegomena" is an essential read for anyone interested in the development of modern philosophy. It is invaluable for scholars, students, and general readers alike, as it not only clarifies Kant's thought but also confronts fundamental questions that continue to resonate in contemporary philosophical inquiries. This text invites readers to reconsider the possibility of metaphysics as a meaningful enterprise, making it indispensable for a deeper understanding of Kant's broader philosophical project.

Soon, the identity of one of the suspects was revealed: he was a Russian spy. This huge investigative coup wasn't pulled off by an intelligence agency or a traditional news outlet. Instead, the scoop came from Bellingcat, the open-source investigative team that is redefining the way we think about news, politics, and the digital future.

We Are Bellingcat tells the inspiring story of how a college dropout pioneered a new category of reporting and galvanized citizen journalists-working together from their computer screens around the globe-to crack major cases, at a time when fact-based journalism is under assault from authoritarian forces. Founder Eliot Higgins introduces readers to the tools Bellingcat investigators use, tools available to anyone, from software that helps you pinpoint the location of an image, to an app that can nail down the time that photo was taken. This book digs deep into some of Bellingcat's most important investigations-the downing of flight MH17 over Ukraine, Assad's use of chemical weapons in Syria, the identities of alt-right protestors in Charlottesville-with the drama and gripping detail of a spy novel.

For the first time, Jacques Parizeau shares his views on Quebec's recent history and its future. As chief economics advisor to Quebec premiers in the 1960s, Jacques Parizeau was instrumental in bringing about Quebe's Quiet Revolution. As Ren? L?vesque's Finance Minister from 1976 through 1984, he showed that sovereigntists could govern Quebec and ensure economic viability. As Premier, he brought Quebec close to sovereignty in the 1995 referendum. In 2010, he still represents an idea shared by millions in Quebec. Drawing on his rich experience in public service and teaching, Jacques Parizeau explains how the idea of an independent Quebec took root and evolved. He examines Quebec's current economic, political, social and cultural situation, and reviews options for future development. No stones are left unturned. Why become independent? What is the role of the State and how should it be administered in a globalized economy. What are the challenges in the 21st century? What about the financial crisis? And the environment? And above all what challenges face Quebec sovereigntists and their English Canadian counterparts?
