My Religion A Journey Towards Spiritual Enlightenment【電子書籍】[ Leo graf Tolstoy ]

In "My Religion," Leo Tolstoy presents a profound exploration of spirituality, ethics, and the nature of faith. Written in the context of his own spiritual awakening and disenchantment with institutionalized religion, the book weaves philosophical discourse with personal narrative. Tolstoy'??s literary style in this work is both contemplative and didactic, employing straightforward prose to convey complex ideas about the moral imperatives of love, compassion, and the quest for truth. The text critiques the dogmas of organized religion, advocating instead for a personal and existential understanding of faith that resonates with universal human experience. Leo Tolstoy, a titan of Russian literature, was profoundly impacted by his personal struggles with faith, social injustices, and the search for meaning in an increasingly materialistic world. Having experienced a spiritual crisis in the later years of his life, he sought to articulate the essence of his beliefs, which reject superficial religious practices in favor of a deeper, lived spirituality. His lifelong commitment to moral integrity and social reform undeniably informs the themes of "My Religion." Readers seeking a thoughtful examination of spirituality will find "My Religion" both enlightening and challenging. Tolstoy'??s reflections serve not only as a guide toward personal morality but also as an invitation to question established beliefs. This book is essential for those interested in philosophy, theology, or the human condition, encouraging critical engagement with one'??s own faith and ethical stance.

The Narrative of My Captivity Among the Sioux Indians With a Brief Account of General Sully's Indian Expedition in 1864【電子書籍】[ Fanny Kelly ]

Fanny Kelly's "The Narrative of My Captivity Among the Sioux Indians" is a gripping first-person account that delves into the harrowing experience of captivity amid the social and cultural turmoil of the mid-19th century American frontier. Kelly's prose is both vivid and intimate, offering readers an unfiltered glimpse into her life as a captive. Through detailed descriptions and emotional depth, she artfully conveys the challenges she faced, the relationships she formed, and the resilience required to survive in a challenging environment, all set against the backdrop of the complex interactions between Native Americans and European settlers during a time of significant upheaval. As an author and survivor, Fanny Kelly's reflections are rooted in her own traumatic experiences. Captured by the Sioux in 1856, her narrative not only highlights the harrowing aspects of her captivity but also serves as a testament to her strength and adaptability. Kelly's background as an educated woman of her time adds a unique lens through which she articulates her observations and experiences, enriching the narrative with an exceptional perspective on both cultural exchange and conflict. This compelling narrative is highly recommended for readers interested in American history, anthropology, and personal memoirs. Kelly's insightful and poignant storytelling captivates, offering profound reflections on resilience and the human spirit that remain relevant today. Her work invites further exploration of the often-misunderstood dynamics between Native American tribes and European settlers, making it an essential read for anyone seeking to understand the complexities of this historical period.

I Have My Mother's Eyes A Holocaust Story across Generations【電子書籍】[ Barbara Ruth Bluman ]

This Holocaust memoir crosses generations. In I Have My Mother’s Eyes, Barbara Ruth Bluman chronicles her mother’s dramatic journey from Nazi-occupied Poland to western British Columbia, where her legacy lives on. Bluman sets an urgent and intimate tone as she follows Zosia Hoffenberg from her genteel upbringing in Warsaw through the shock of the blitzkrieg and on to her escape from Europe through Lithuania, the Soviet Union and Japan. That escape required the help of Chiune Sugihara, the Japanese consul in Lithuania, who defied his superiors and helped several thousand Jews to flee. Bluman also reveals how, even as she was recording her mother’s tale of survival, cancer was ravaging her own body. In this interwoven narrative, Bluman explains how she garnered strength from her mother’s account as a refugee, “staring death in the face.” These twin narratives blossom out of salvaged journal entries and letters, and from the photographs of family members who have reunited after years of displacement. Bluman’s daughter Danielle Low brings this double memoir to a conclusion. A celebration of the universal struggle for survival, I Have My Mother’s Eyes offers a hopeful response to one of history’s darkest times.

Lectures to My Students: Practical and Spiritual Guidance for Preachers (Volume 2)【電子書籍】[ Charles H. Spurgeon ]

"The solemn work of Christian ministry demands a man’s all, and that all should be at its best. To engage in ministry halfheartedly is an insult to God and man. Sleep must leave our eyelids before men are allowed to perish. Yet we are all prone to sleep, and students, among the rest, are apt to act the part of the foolish virgins. Therefore, I have sought to speak out my whole soul in the hope that I might not create or foster any dullness in others, and to this end, my lectures are colloquial, familiar, full of anecdote, and often humorous. May He, in whose hand are the churches and their pastors, bless these words to younger brethren in the ministry, and if so, I will count it more than a full reward and will gratefully praise the Lord."
- Charles H. As he examines the complexities and contradictions of the Israeli condition, Shavit asks difficult but important questions: Why did Israel come to be? How did it come to be? Can it survive?

Culminating with an analysis of the issues and threats that Israel is facing*, My Promised Land* uses the defining events of the past to shed new light on the present. Get Out of My Room! A History of Teen Bedrooms in America【電子書籍】[ Jason Reid ]

Teenage life is tough. You’re at the mercy of parents, teachers, and siblings, all of whom insist on continuing to treat you like a kid and refuse to leave you alone. So what do you do when it all gets to be too much? You retreat to your room (and maybe slam the door).

Even in our era of Snapchat and hoverboards, bedrooms remain a key part of teenage life, one of the only areas where a teen can exert control and find some privacy. And while these separate bedrooms only became commonplace after World War II, the idea of the teen bedroom has been around for a long time. With Get Out of My Room!, Jason Reid digs into the deep historical roots of the teen bedroom and its surprising cultural power. He starts in the first half of the nineteenth century, when urban-dwelling middle-class families began to consider offering teens their own spaces in the home, and he traces that concept through subsequent decades, as social, economic, cultural, and demographic changes caused it to become more widespread. Along the way, Reid shows us how the teen bedroom, with its stuffed animals, movie posters, AM radios, and other trappings of youthful identity, reflected the growing involvement of young people in American popular culture, and also how teens and parents, in the shadow of ongoing social changes, continually negotiated the boundaries of this intensely personal space.

Richly detailed and full of surprising stories and insights, Get Out of My Room! is sure to offer insight and entertainment to anyone with wistful memories of their teenage years. (But little brothers should definitely keep out.)

This carefully crafted ebook: "My Secret Life: The Complete Unabridged Volumes I. to III." is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. My Secret Life, by "Walter", is the memoir of a Victorian gentleman's sexual development and experiences. It was first published in a private edition, which appeared over seven years beginning around 1888. In spite of "Walter's" obsessive womanising over a period of several decades, only a few of his partners are of his own social class. The great majority are either prostitutes, servants or working class women. The frank discussion of sexual matters and other hidden aspects of Victorian life make this book a rare and valuable social document. Narrative of My Captivity Among the Sioux Indians【電子書籍】[ Fanny Kelly ]

The summer of 1864 marked a period of unusual peril to the daring pioneers seeking homes in the far West. Following upon the horrible massacres in Minnesota in 1862, and the subsequent chastisements inflicted by the expeditions under General Sully and Sibley in 1863, whereby the Indians were driven from the then western borders of civilization, in Iowa, Minnesota, and the white settlements of Dakota, in the Missouri Valley, the great emigrant trails to Idaho and Montana became the scene of fresh outrages...I was a member of a small company of emigrants, who were attacked by an overwhelming force of hostile Sioux, which resulted in the death of a large proportion of the party, in my own capture, and a horrible captivity of five months’ duration.
Of my thrilling adventures and experience during this season of terror and privation, I propose to give a plain, unvarnished narrative, hoping the reader will be more interested in facts concerning the habits, manners, and customs of the Indians, and their treatment of prisoners, than in theoretical speculations and fine-wrought sentences.

My Path to Atheism An Intimate Journey to Embracing Non-Belief【電子書籍】[ Annie Besant ]

In "My Path to Atheism," Annie Besant explores her deeply personal journey towards atheistic belief within the context of late 19th-century philosophical debates and the rise of secularism. The book is marked by a clear and persuasive literary style, interweaving anecdotes with robust arguments that challenge religious dogma. Besant eloquently articulates her disillusionment with organized religion, weaving together existential questions with the scientific and rational discoveries of her time, showcasing a critical shift in thought that many contemporaries experienced. Annie Besant, a prominent British social reformer, theosophist, and women's rights activist, was heavily influenced by her own experiences with religious orthodoxy and the suffocating traditions of her upbringing. Her involvement with the Theosophical Society and her dedication to spiritual inquiry provided her with a unique perspective on religion, ultimately leading her to reject its tenets in favor of a rational, atheistic worldview. Besant'??s intellectual journey reflects the broader movement towards secularism in Victorian society, making her insights particularly poignant. For readers seeking a profound understanding of the transition from faith to reason, "My Path to Atheism" is an essential read. It not only invites reflection on personal beliefs and societal norms but also serves as a touchstone for those navigating their own paths to understanding the complexities of faith and doubt.

This booklet introduces the classic text by K?toku Sh?sui that launched Japan's first anarchist movement in late Meiji era Japan. In 1907, K?toku, one of Japan's foremost socialists of the time, laid out the reasons for his move toward anarchist thought, his insistence that "direct action" would be the only way to truly realize a social revolution, and his plea for his socialist comrades to re-consider their strategy of prioritizing parliamentary power. This booklet features an introduction to K?toku and his essay, a new translation of his essay, extensive footnotes and annotations that cover matters such as translation decisions and historical context, K?toku's own preface that accompanied the original essay, and an appendix with supplementary material that can aid in understanding certain aspects of the essay.

Over My Dead Body Unearthing the Hidden History of America's Cemeteries【電子書籍】[ Greg Melville ]

Journalist Greg Melville’s Over My Dead Body is an “astonishing . . . fascinating . . . powerful” (New York Times Book Review) tour through the history of US cemeteries that explores how, where, and why we bury our dead.

“You hold in your hands a treasure map, a gentle, sly, and poignant presence leading us to places in America and in our lives that have been hiding in plain sight. This tale is about cemeteries, but it’s really about how beautiful is life.” ー#1 New York Times bestselling author Doug Stanton

The summer before his senior year in college, Greg Melville worked at the cemetery in his hometown, and thanks to hour upon hour of pushing a mower over the grassy acres, he came to realize what a rich story the place told of his town and its history. Thus was born Melville’s lifelong curiosity with how, where, and why we bury and commemorate our dead.

Melville’s Over My Dead Body is a lively (pun intended) and wide-ranging history of cemeteries, places that have mirrored the passing eras in history but also have shaped it. Cemeteries have given birth to landscape architecture and famous parks, as well as influenced architectural styles. They’ve inspired and motivated some of our greatest poets and authorsーEmerson, Whitman, Dickinson. They’ve been used as political tools to shift the country’s discourse and as important symbols of the United States’ ambition and reach.

But they are changing and fading. Embalming and burial is incredibly toxic, and while cremations have just recently surpassed burials in popularity, they’re not great for the environment either. Over My Dead Body explores everything about cemeteriesーhistory, sustainability, land use, and moreーand what it really means to memorialize.

Includes Black-and-White Photographs

Locales visited in Over My Dead Body
Shawsheen Cemetery ? Bedford, Massachusetts; the 1607 burial ground ? Historic Jamestowne, Virginia; Burial Hill ? Plymouth, Massachusetts; Colonial Jewish Burial Ground ?
