In "Mornings at Bow Street," J. Wight masterfully weaves a tapestry of intrigue and social commentary set against the backdrop of early 19th-century London. With a narrative style that balances vivid descriptiveness and nuanced character development, Wight plunges readers into the bustling and often morally ambiguous world of Bow Street magistrates, highlighting the complexities of crime, justice, and societal norms. The novel reflects a keen awareness of the historical context, drawing upon real events and figures of the time, thereby elevating the narrative from mere fiction to an insightful exploration of the era's legal and social evolution. J. Wight, a writer with a profound interest in criminal justice and historical narratives, has spent years researching the intricacies of early legal systems. Inspired by both fiction and non-fiction works surrounding law enforcement during the Regency period, Wight channels this expertise into crafting a gripping storyline filled with rich detail and vivid landscapes. Their background in history and literature infuses the text with authenticity and depth, creating a compelling lens through which modern readers can examine the past. For those captivated by intricate plots and intellectual exploration of morality, "Mornings at Bow Street" offers an invaluable blend of entertainment and enlightenment. Once a small Mexican pueblo teeming with Californios, Indians, and Americans, all armed with Bowie knives and Colt revolvers, it was among the most murderous locales in the Californian frontier. In Eternity Street: Violence and Justice in Frontier Los Angeles, "a vivid, disturbing portrait of early Los Angeles" (Publishers Weekly), John Mack Faragher weaves a riveting narrative of murder and mayhem, featuring a cast of colorful characters vying for their piece of the city. These include a newspaper editor advocating for lynch laws to enact a crude manner of racial justice and a mob of Latinos preparing to ransack a county jail and murder a Texan outlaw. In this "groundbreaking" (True West) look at American history, Faragher shows us how the City of Angels went from a lawless outpost to the sprawling metropolis it is today.

He recounts his participation in some of its most important battles-Manassas, Antietam, Chickamauga, and, most significantly from the standpoint of his reputation, Gettysburg. While some have argued that Longstreet did not comply efficiently with Robert E. Lee's orders at Gettysburg, historians have concluded that the primary responsibility for the Confederate defeat on the Pennsylvania battlefield lies with Lee.
"Longstreet's memoir covers the full range of his life and wartime experiences, from his early years as a boy in the antebellum south to his appointment as a cadet at West Point to his command of troops in the Mexican War. He devotes a full chapter to an assessment of his friend and commander Robert E. Lee and nearly four chapters to the Battle of Gettysburg. He details disagreements with his fellow officers and offers appraisals of his Union counterparts. He frankly recounts how he considered offering his "relief from service" on more than one occasion. And, of course, Longstreet offers his perspective on the Confederate surrender to Union forces at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, in April 1865."-Print Edition

Yoshiwara Geishas, Courtesans, and the Pleasure Quarters of Old Tokyo【電子書籍】[ Stephen Longstreet ]

"Lust will not keep…Something must be done about it."ーinscription at the entrance to Yoshiwara

For over a hundred years the Western world has heard whispers of the pleasure city, Yoshiwara, set behind its walls in the city of Edo itself, which is today called Tokyo. Here was an eastern red light district, the place for the hedonists, the woman-seekers, the sensual plasure-hunters of old Japan. There, behind moated walls, an erotic Japanese world unmatched by the West was created by beautiful courtesans, geishas, dancers, actors, and artists. To this "floating world" came the hedonists and the sensual pleasure hunters of old Japan. Many myths and legends encircled the secrets of the Yoshiwara, and still do. In time other Japanese cities tried to copy the original, sometimes even calling their district for geishas and courtesans and pretty waitress girls a Yoshiwara.

Stephen and Ethel Longstreet use prints and fascinating original sources to trace the rise and fall of this city within a city, a sanctioned preserve of teahouses and brothels that was not abolished until 1958, sketching a vivid, no-holds-bared portrait of social and sexual mores in Japan's capital.

Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies: Confederate Generals Accounts of the Overland Campaign【電子書籍】[ Robert E. Lee, James Longstreet, John Gordon, Richard Ewell and Joseph Kershaw ]

From May-June 1864, newly installed U.S. Army Commander Ulysses S. Grant attached himself to George Meades Army of the Potomac and directed that armys confrontation of Robert E. Lees Army of Northern Virginia in a series of very high casualty battles known as the Overland Campaign. Despite being stopped at the Battle of the Wilderness, Grant proceeded south and nearly dealt the Confederate army a fatal blow at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House. The armies kept maneuvering toward Richmond and fought near the North Anna River before the Battle of Cold Harbor in early June.At the Battle of Cold Harbor, General Grant thought Lees Army of Northern Virginia was on the verge of collapse, and he decided to order a massive frontal assault against well fortified and entrenched lines. Grant was dead wrong, literally. Although the story of Union soldiers pinning their names on the back of their uniforms in anticipation of death is apocryphal, they did suffer thousands of casualties in about half an hour. Eventually the Overland Campaign ended in a stalemate siege at Petersburg. During the siege, Grant coordinated a series of devastating campaigns launched by William Tecumseh Sherman, Philip Sheridan, and George H. Thomas. In April 1865, after finally breaking through Lee's trenches at Petersburg, the Union Army captured Richmond, the Confederate capital. Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox on April 9, and shortly thereafter, the Confederacy collapsed and the Civil War ended. Before all of the generals relived the Overland Campaign in their memoirs, they wrote official accounts of the battles to their superiors, and these accounts were preserved in the Official Records. This collection includes 5 accounts of the campaign from prominent Confederate generals, including Robert E. Lee, James Longstreet, Richard Ewell, Joseph Kershaw and John Gordon. It is specially formatted with a Table of Contents for each generals account, maps and illustrations of the campaign, and pictures of the generals who fought in it.

The Great Azusa Street Revival The Life and Sermons of William Seymour【電子書籍】[ William Seymour ]

Serving as the “catalyst” of the Pentecostal movement in the twentieth century, William J. Seymour turned a tiny former horse stable in Los Angeles into an international center of revival. Baptism of the Holy Spirit, with the evidence of speaking in tongues, was a major part of the meetings held there, and Seymour led the first organized movement that promoted this experience. At Azusa, blacks, whites, Hispanics, and Europeans all met and worshiped together, crossing formerly impossible cultural lines.
“There is no Jew or Gentile, bond or free, in the Azusa Mission,” Seymour said. “No instrument that God can use is rejected on account of color or dress or lack of education. This is why God has built up the work.”
Compiled by Roberts Liardon, author of the bestselling God’s Generals series, The Great Azusa Street Revival features historic accounts, eyewitness testimonies to the power of God, and photos capturing the multicultural, worldwide appeal of Seymour and his ministry. Included are many of Seymour’s stirring sermons and writings, which are still relevant to believers today.
Although the revival was short-lived, it produced and exploded the Pentecostal movement around the world. Today, many denominations attribute their founding to the participants of the Azusa Street church, and countless others are linked to this revival.

Market Street Pastor Ministry Sustainability without Money Stress【電子書籍】[ Eric Hoke ]

Pastors want to work hard to provide for their families, be radically generous, and build a legacy of ministry that they can be proud of. In the modern ministry vocation, the only way to do this is to expand vocational options and earn additional income outside of the church. The problem is that pastors have only ever worked in churches and have no idea how to message their valuable skills in a way that makes sense to hiring managers in the open marketplace. As a result, they are paralyzed and frustrated because they know that they could break into the workforce, earn more money, and meet community members outside the church but don't know where to start on the job hunt. Eric Hoke understands how difficult it is to change industries and move from being a pastor to a marketplace professional because he did it in New York City, where he spent ten years living and ministering as a church planter while also working in Manhattan for-profits. Hoke has helped thousands of others to do the same through a proven five-step process that helps pastors break into the marketplace and build a ministry of sustainability.

Street Diplomacy The Politics of Slavery and Freedom in Philadelphia, 1820?1850【電子書籍】[ Elliott Drago ]

An illuminating look at how Philadelphia's antebellum free Black community defended themselves against kidnappings and how this "street diplomacy" forced Pennsylvanians to confront the politics of slavery.

As the most southern of northern cities in a state that bordered three slave states, antebellum Philadelphia maintained a long tradition of both abolitionism and fugitive slave activity. Although Philadelphia's Black community lived in a free city in a free state, they faced constant threats to their personal safety and freedom. Enslavers, kidnappers, and slave catchers prowled the streets of Philadelphia in search of potential victims, violent anti-Black riots erupted in the city, and white politicians legislated to undermine Black freedom. In Street Diplomacy, Elliott Drago illustrates how the political and physical conflicts that arose over fugitive slave removals and the kidnappings of free Black people forced Philadelphians to confront the politics of slavery.

Pennsylvania was legally a free state, at the street level and in the lived experience of its Black citizens, but Pennsylvania was closer to a slave state due to porous borders and the complicity of white officials. Legal contests between slavery and freedom at the local level triggered legislative processes at the state and national level, which underscored the inability of white politicians to resolve the paradoxes of what it meant for a Black American to inhabit a free state within a slave society.

Piecing together fragmentary source material from archives, correspondence, genealogies, and newspapers, Dragoexamines these conflicts in Philadelphia from 1820 to 1850. Studying these timely struggles over race, politics, enslavement, and freedom in Philadelphia will encourage scholars to reexamine how Black freedom was not secure in Pennsylvania or in the wider United States.

18 Folgate Street The Life of a House in Spitalfields【電子書籍】[ Dennis Severs ]

Growing up in California, Dennis Severs fell in love with the England he saw in old black and white movies. At seventeen he came to London, looking for a home with a heart. In 1979 he found one, a run-down silk-weaver's house in Spitalfields, and over the next twenty years he transformed it into an enchanted time-capsule, transporting us back to the eighteenth century. From cellar to roof, he filled 18 Folgate Street with original objects and furniture, found in the local markets, lit by candles and chandeliers. More than that, he invented a family to live here, the Jervis family, Huguenot weavers who fled persecution in France in 1688, and bought the house in 1724. Sounds and scents bring their world to life, always just out of sight - floorboards creak, fires crackle, a kettle hisses on the hob. Visitors step through the frame of time, like entering an old master painting. As we move from room to room on a tour you will never forget, we follow the Jervis story from the days of the Georges and the Regency to harsher Victorian times - and even to the attic room of Scrooge himself.

The Sovereign Street Making Revolution in Urban Bolivia【電子書籍】[ Carwil Bjork-James ]

In the early twenty-first century Bolivian social movements made streets, plazas, and highways into the decisively important spaces for acting politically, rivaling and at times exceeding voting booths and halls of government. The Sovereign Street documents this important period, showing how indigenous-led mass movements reconfigured the politics and racial order of Bolivia from 1999 to 2011.

Drawing on interviews with protest participants, on-the-ground observation, and documentary research, activist and scholar Carwil Bjork-James provides an up-close history of the indigenous-led protests that changed Bolivia. At the heart of the study is a new approach to the interaction between protest actions and the parts of the urban landscape they claim. These “space-claiming protests” both communicate a message and exercise practical control over the city. Bjork-James interrogates both protest tacticsーas experiences and as toolsーand meaning-laden spaces, where meaning is part of the racial and political geography of the city.

Taking the streets of Cochabamba, Sucre, and La Paz as its vantage point, The Sovereign Streetoffers a rare look at political revolution as it happens. It documents a critical period in Latin American history, when protests made headlines worldwide, where a generation of pro-globalization policies were called into question, and where the indigenous majority stepped into government power for the first time in five centuries.

Owning the Street The Everyday Life of Property【電子書籍】[ Amelia Thorpe ]

How local, specific, and personal understandings about belonging, ownership, and agency intersect with law to shape the city.

In Owning the Street, Amelia Thorpe examines everyday experiences of and feelings about property and belonging in contemporary cities. She grounds her account in an empirical study of PARK(ing) Day, an annual event that reclaims street space from cars. A popular and highly recognizable example of DIY Urbanism, PARK(ing) Day has attracted considerable media attention, but has not yet been the subject of close scholarly examination. Focusing on the event's trajectories in San Francisco, Sydney, and Montreal, Thorpe addresses this gap, making use of extensive interview data, field work, and careful reflection to explore these tiny, temporary, and often transformative interventions.

PARK(ing) Day is based on a creative interpretation of the property producible by paying a parking meter. Paying a meter, the event’s organizers explained, amounts to taking out a lease on the space; while most “lessees” use that property to store a car, the space could be put to other usesーengaging politics (a free health clinic for migrant workers, a same sex wedding, a protest against fossil fuels) and play (a dance floor, giant Jenga, a pocket park). Through this novel rereading of everyday regulation, PARK(ing) Day provides an example of the connection between belief and actionーa connection at the heart of Thorpe’s argument. Thorpe examines ways in which local, personal, and materially grounded understandings about belonging, ownership, and agency intersect with law to shape the city. Her analysis offers insights into the ways in which citizens can shape the governance of urban space, particularly in contested environments.

The book's foreword is by Davina Cooper, Research Professor in Law at King’s College London.

No Strings Attached Boundary Lines in Pleasant Places: A History of Warren Street / Pleasant Oaks Mennonite Church【電子書籍】[ Rachel Nafziger Hartzler ]

No Strings Attached is the story of a Mennonite congregation in Indiana that existed for eighty-six years. The congregation began during the social and religious turmoil of the 1920s when some Mennonites in North America held to rigid doctrines and ethics implemented by central authority, and others operated with a congregational polity and became more assimilated into secular culture. The struggle between these two different understandings of faithfulness was most passionately played out in northern Indiana. Placing the narrative of this congregation within the context of 500 years of Mennonite history illustrates the grace and the tension that has both beset and empowered a unique group of people who began as radical reformers. Although "no strings attached" refers to the women's headwear during the 1920s, which had no strings, it could also be the story of the pastor eating lunch on the peak of the steep roof of the church building! Reflecting on stories of these Mennonite people is an invitation to move into the future with courageous hope. Believing and behaving differently has not prevented Middlebury Mennonites from treating each other respectfully, living in a community of love, joy, and peace, and offering God's healing and hope to each other and to the world.
