Spirits and Animism in Contemporary Japan The Invisible Empire【
|

This book draws attention to a striking aspect of contemporary Japanese culture: the prevalence of discussions and representations of “spirits” (tama or tamashii). Ancestor cults have played a central role in Japanese culture and religion for many centuries; in recent decades, however, other phenomena have expanded and diversified the realm of Japanese animism. For example, many manga, anime, TV shows, literature, and art works deal with spirits, ghosts, or with an invisible dimension of reality. International contributors ask to what extent these are cultural forms created by the media for consumption, rather than manifestations of “traditional” ancestral spirituality in their adaptations to contemporary society.

Spirits and Animism in Contemporary Japan considers the modes of representations and the possible cultural meanings of spirits, as well as the metaphysical implications of contemporary Japanese ideas about spirits. The chapters offer analyses of specific cases of “animistic attitudes” in which the presence of spirits and spiritual forces is alleged, and attempt to trace cultural genealogies of those attitudes. In particular, they present various modes of representation of spirits (in contemporary art, architecture, visual culture, cinema, literature, diffuse spirituality) while at the same time addressing their underlying intellectual and religious assumptions.

Animism and the Question of Life【電子書籍】[ Istvan Praet ]
|

The central purpose of this book is to help change the terms of the debate on animism, a classic theme in anthropology. It combines some of the finest ethnographic material currently available (including firsthand research on the Chachi of Ecuador) with an unusually broad geographic scope (the Americas, Asia, and Africa). Edward B. Tylor originally defined animism as the first phase in the development of religion. The heyday of cultural evolutionism may be over, but his basic conception is commonly assumed to remain valid in at least one respect: there is still a broad consensus that everything is alive within animism, or at least that more things are alive than a modern scientific observer would allow for (e.g., clouds, rivers, mountains) It is considered self-evident that animism is based on a kind of exaggeration: its adherents are presumed to impute life to this, that and the other in a remarkably generous manner. Against the prevailing consensus, this book argues that if animism has one outstanding feature, it is its peculiar restrictiveness. Animistic notions of life are astonishingly uniform across the globe, insofar as they are restricted rather than exaggerated. In the modern Western cosmology, life overlaps with the animate. Within animism, however, life is always conditional, and therefore tends to be limited to one’s kin, one’s pets and perhaps the plants in one’s garden. Thus it emerges that "our" modern biological concept of life is stranger than generally thought.

Sacred Nature Animism and Materiality in Ancient Religions【
|

Sacred Nature: Animism and Materiality in Ancient Religions is the second volume of the series Material Religion in Antiquity (MaReA). The book collects the proceedings of the international online workshop carrying the same title organized by CAMNES, SoRS on 20?21 May 2021. Sacred Nature brings together the perspectives of scholars from different disciplines (archaeology, anthropology, iconography, philology, history of religions) about the notions of nature, sacredness, animism and materiality in ancient religions of the Old and the New World. The contributions highlight various ways of understandings the relationships that occurred between human beings, animals, plants, rivers, deities and the land in the religious life of ancient societies. In particular, each chapter explores entangled aspects of the perception of nature and its other-than-human inhabitants, and contributes to readdress some notions about nature, personhood/agency, divinity/sacrality, and materiality/spirituality in ancient religions and cosmologies. In this line, the book seeks to promote a starkly inter-disciplinary and religious-anthropological approach to the definition of ‘sacred nature’, especially engaging with the analytical category of animism as a fruitful conceptual tool for the investigation of human-environmental relations in the ancient religious conceptions, representations and practices. Dialoguing with animism and drawing upon the question on how an ancient religion happened materially, the volume presents key case studies that explore how nature and its non-human inhabitants were understood, represented, engaged with and interwoven in the sacred and sensuous landscapes of ancients.

Animism and the Origin of Religion According to Edward Burnett Tylor (1832-1917)【電子書籍】[ Andrew Conley ]
|

Edward Burnett Tylor's work in the late 19th century laid the foundation for the scientific study of religion, positioning animism as the foundational belief system in the evolutionary trajectory of human religious thought. His comparative approach to religion, emphasizing universal cognitive patterns across cultures, sought to establish religion as a human construct shaped by social, cognitive, and environmental factors, rather than divine revelation. Tylor's theory proposed a linear progression from animism to polytheism to monotheism, aligning with broader intellectual trends in anthropology and evolutionary theory. Despite facing critiques for its Eurocentrism, intellectual reductionism, and oversimplification of religious diversity, Tylor's legacy remains significant. His work influenced the development of modern anthropological theories, including cognitive anthropology, symbolic anthropology, and postcolonial critiques of religious studies. As the field evolved, scholars expanded upon Tylor's ideas, emphasizing the emotional, social, and performative dimensions of religion, while rejecting his linear model in favor of more contextualized and culturally relativistic approaches. Today, Tylor's comparative method continues to inform discussions on the universality of religious belief and the intricate relationship between religion, culture, and human cognition, maintaining relevance in contemporary anthropological and religious studies.

Animism beyond the Soul Ontology, Reflexivity, and the Making of Anthropological Knowledge【
|

How might we envision animism through the lens of the ‘anthropology of anthropology’? The contributors to this volume offer compelling case studies that demonstrate how indigenous animistic practices, concepts, traditions, and ontologies are co-authored in highly reflexive ways by anthropologists and their interlocutors. They explore how native epistemologies, which inform anthropological notions during fieldwork, underpin the dialogues between researchers and their participants. In doing so, the contributors reveal ways in which indigenous thinkers might be influenced by anthropological concepts of the soul and, equally, how they might subtly or dramatically then transform those same concepts within anthropological theory.

Animism in Rainforest and Tundra Personhood, Animals, Plants and Things in Contemporary Amazonia and Siberia【
|

Amazonia and Siberia, classic regions of shamanism, have long challenged ‘western’ understandings of man’s place in the world. By exploring the social relations between humans and non-human entities credited with human-like personhood (not only animals and plants, but also ‘things’ such as artifacts, trade items, or mineral resources) from a comparative perspective, this volume offers valuable insights into the constitutions of humanity and personhood characteristic of the two areas. The contributors conducted their ethnographic fieldwork among peoples undergoing transformative processes of their lived environments, such as the depletion of natural resources and migration to urban centers. They describe here fundamental relational modes that are being tested in the face of change, presenting groundbreaking research on personhood and agency in shamanic societies and contributing to our global understanding of social and cultural change and continuity.

Time and Nature in the Poetry of Niyi Osundare Poetics of Animism, Anthropocene, and Capitalocene【電子書籍】[ Chukwunwike Anolue ]
|

This book provides an ecocritical analysis of the poetry of the famous Nigerian poet Niyi Osundare. It interrogates the intricate interface between time and nature in 11 of Osundare’s defining poetry collections. This is a book of postcolonial ecocriticism from an African perspective. It brings together the ecocritical theory of animism and theories of geologic time in the discussion of Osundare’s poetry. Osundare shows that animism has a lot to offer in enriching human understanding of the ecosystem. And while he eloquently catalogues problems undermining the health of the earth in this age of the Anthropocene and the Capitalocene in his poetry, he also holds on to the hope of a better future. The book concludes that Osundare’s optimism is what informs his use of poetry to press humankind to rise to the duty of salvaging the environment.

Deploying an interdisciplinary approach that stretches across the fields of literature, religion, geology, physics, economics, and anthropology, this book will be an important read for those looking for fresh ways to understand Osundare’s poetry and African nature writing.

Animism in Southeast Asia【
|

Animism refers to ontologies or worldviews which assign agency and personhood to human and non-human beings alike. Recent years have seen a revival of this concept in anthropology, where it is now discussed as an alternative to modern-Western naturalistic notions of human-environment relations.

Based on original fieldwork, this book presents a number of case studies of animism from insular and peninsular Southeast Asia and offers a comprehensive overview of the phenomenon ? its diversity and underlying commonalities and its resilience in the face of powerful forces of change. Critically engaging with the current standard notion of animism, based on hunter-gatherer and horticulturalist societies in other regions, it examines the roles of life forces, souls and spirits in local cosmologies and indigenous religion. It proposes an expansion of the concept to societies featuring mixed farming, sacrifice and hierarchy and explores the question of how non-human agents are created through acts of attention and communication, touching upon the relationship between animist ontologies, world religion, and the state.

Shedding new light on Southeast Asian religious ethnographic research, the book is a significant contribution to anthropological theory and the revitalization of the concept of animism in the humanities and social sciences.

Japanese Understanding of Salvation Soteriology in the Context of Japanese Animism【電子書籍】[ Martin Hei?wolf ]
|

It is no secret that Christianity has been widely rejected in Japan with less than two percent of the population identifying as Christian. The dominant worldview in Japan is deeply animistic, with beliefs such as the Japanese mana-concept, ki (気), the Japanese soul-concept, and the concept of God/god(s), kami (神), being deeply rooted in the culture and fundamentally influencing society. Dr Martin Hei?wolf, with his years of experience in Japan, critically examines Japanese animism in light of core Christian beliefs, such as the concepts of “peace” and “salvation.” Central to Japanese people’s rejection of Christian truth is the diametric opposition of its supernatural message to the natural focus of Japanese animistic folk religion. Hei?wolf’s meticulous study is framed squarely within missiological thought and praxis so Christians serving in Japanese contexts are better able to communicate the message of the gospel by more fully understanding Japanese people, people by whom God wants to be known.

Cosmologies of the Anthropocene Panpsychism, Animism, and the Limits of Posthumanism【電子書籍】[ Arne Johan Vetlesen ]
|

This book engages with the classic philosophical question of mind and matter, seeking to show its altered meaning and acuteness in the era of the Anthropocene. Arguing that matter, and, more broadly, the natural world, has been misconceived since Descartes, it explores the devastating impact that this has had in practice in the West. As such, alternatives are needed, whether philosophical ones such as those offered by figures such as Whitehead and Nagel, or posthumanist ones such as those developed by Barad and Latour. Drawing on recent anthropological work ignored by philosophers and sociologists alike, the author considers a radical alternative cosmology: animism understood as panpsychism in practice. This understanding of mind and matter, of culture and nature, is then turned against present-day posthumanist critiques of what the Anthropocene amounts to, showing them up as philosophically misguided, politically mute, and ethically wanting. A ground-breaking reconceptualization of the natural world and our treatment of it, Cosmologies of the Anthropocene will appeal to scholars of sociology, social theory, philosophy and anthropology with interests in our understanding of and relationship with nature.

“Animism, the Seed of Religion” is a 1905 treatise on the subject of animism by English writer Edward Clodd. Animism is the religious belief that creatures, objects, and even places have an innate spiritual essence, and can even arguably be considered to be alive. This fascinating volume explores the history and development of this theory while linking it to the origins of religions the world over. Edward Clodd (1840 ? 1930) was an English writer, banker, and anthropologist famous for his various and notable literary and scientific friends. Other notable works by author include: “The Childhood of the World” (1872), “Jesus of Nazareth” (1880), and “Nature Studies” (1882). Contents include: “Brain in Animal and Man”, “Man in the Making”, “Animal and Human Psychology”, “Naturalism; or, Conception of Power Everywhere”, “Animism; Or, Conception of Spirit Everywhere”, “Theories of the Nature of Spirit”, “Spirits in Inanimate Things”, “Fear of Sequence in the Object of Worship”, “Absentee Gods”, etc. Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. Animism in Contemporary Japan Voices for the Anthropocene from post-Fukushima Japan【電子書籍】[ Shoko Yoneyama ]
|

‘Postmodern animism’ first emerged in grassroots Japan in the aftermath of mercury poisoning in Minamata and the nuclear meltdown in Fukushima. Fusing critiques of modernity with intangible cultural heritages, it represents a philosophy of the life-world, where nature is a manifestation of a dynamic life force where all life is interconnected. This new animism, it is argued, could inspire a fundamental rethink of the human-nature relationship.

The book explores this notion of animism through the lens of four prominent figures in Japan: animation film director Miyazaki Hayao, sociologist Tsurumi Kazuko, writer Ishimure Michiko, and Minamata fisherman-philosopher Ogata Masato. Taking a biographical approach, it illustrates how these individuals moved towards the conclusion that animism can help humanity survive modernity. It contributes to the Anthropocene discourse from a transcultural and transdisciplinary perspective, thusaddressing themes of nature and spirituality, whilst also engaging with arguments from mainstream social sciences.

Presenting a new perspective for a post-anthropocentric paradigm, Animism in Contemporary Japan will be useful to students and scholars of sociology, anthropology, philosophy and Japanese Studies.

Iconology of Fuji Painting Japanese Psyche in Perspective of Animism, Shamanism and Mountain Worship【電子書籍】[ Yoshihiko Maeno ]
|

The first scientific-iconological survey ever on the most traditional and most topicalized genre in Japanese arts, Fuji Painting, from its origin in antiquity in the 9th century, through the Middle Ages (Sansui-Painting in especial), to its apex in Edo Ukiyoe Painting (Hiroshige and Hokusai). It facilitates you to acquire a brilliant and concise perspective not only on the Japanese art history but above all on the Japanese psyche in most impressive features. The author’s style is sufficient both for specialists and for the friends of Japanese culture in general. As to the methodical peculiarities it is to be noted that the author’s iconological point of view, based upon its main stream from Warburg and Gombrich is quite new and innovative to the study of Japanese art history. The combination of ‘icon’, i.e. visual representations, and ‘logos’, i.e. historical documents, is quite apt especially for this particular genre of Fuji Painting, for it formed the rich tradition of kaleidoscopic-manifold arts on the one hand, and the deep strata of Japanese psyche expressing itself in animism, shamanism, which has been synthesized in the mountain worship of Fuji.

Global Perspectives on Animism and Autonomous Technologies【
|

This volume provides a timely analysis of the emerging phenomenon of autonomous technology, a topic of intense contemporary importance given the transformative potential and risks posed by rapidly developing AI systems. It utilizes a unique approach by focusing on the ways that these technologies can be understood via the lens of animism and ‘techno-animism,’ a term that denotes how society and individual users are attributing life-like properties ? agency, intention, and will ? to technological systems. The volume further interrogates and critiques the ways that autonomous technologies are often intentionally designed to promote socioemotional connections with users. The volume investigates such technologies through a variety of global settings and interdisciplinary lenses. With contributions from scholars across anthropology, sociology, communication studies, law, and design theory, it offers a range of perspectives on how autonomous technologies are reshaping cultural and social institutions worldwide. Furthermore, this collection addresses the urgent need for concrete research on the readiness of legal and social frameworks to incorporate autonomous technologies. With the imminent widespread integration of autonomous technologies into our everyday lives, the volume provides a critical examination of human-technology interaction and its immediate implications, guiding readers through the intricate web of digital interconnectedness that is on course to define the future of humanity.
