|

In "The Raid of The Guerilla, and Other Stories," Mary Noailles Murfree intricately weaves the rich tapestry of Southern Appalachian culture, encapsulating the tension of a landscape fraught with conflict and transformation during the Civil War era. Her narrative style blends vivid descriptions and local dialect, embodying the raw beauty of the mountain scenery alongside the harsh realities faced by its inhabitants. Through a series of compelling short stories, Murfree explores themes of loyalty, bravery, and the multifaceted nature of heroism, reflecting the complexities of life in a region often overlooked in mainstream literature of her time. Mary Noailles Murfree, often known by her pen name, Charles Egbert Craddock, was a pioneering author of the late 19th century. Born in Tennessee, her intimate knowledge of the Appalachian landscape and its people deeply informed her writing. Murfree's works emerge from her desire to bridge the gap between the romanticized South and the gritty truths of its struggles. Her unique perspective as a woman in a predominantly male literary world provides an invaluable critique of societal norms, further enhancing her narrative authority. This collection is highly recommended for readers interested in regional literature, American history, or the nuanced portrayal of rural life. Murfree's articulate and evocative storytelling invites readers to experience the resilience of her characters, making "The Raid of The Guerilla, and Other Stories" an essential addition to any literary canon.

Gena of the Appalachians【電子書籍】[ Clarence Monroe Wallin ]
|

It was late in the afternoon of a cold winter’s day when they sent for him to go and perform the last sad rites at the burial of Lucky Joe.
Lucky Joe had outstripped the law in his crimes for more than forty yearsーhence the people had well dubbed him “Lucky.” For more than three decades his name had been the synonym of dread and fear among the people of the hills. He had at length whipped them into granting him whatever he exacted of them, whether the thing in itself was right or wrong. But one memorable day, the tardy finger of the law apprehended him, and he stood up before the bar of Justice and heard the court pronounce, “Joseph Filson, guilty!” Quickly he was ushered away to the penitentiaryーdown to a Southern jail and to hard and endless toil for the remainder of his life. The gates of the prison closed and locked their iron jaws behind him: his keeper admonished him to be obedient, and he immediately chose to work at the blacksmith’s forge. Day after day, he swung the sledge in silence. Then the days crowded into months and into years, but he pounded away at the anvil unmindful of the end. Finally death came and knocked at the door of his narrow cell and took him away.

The Invisible Minority Urban Appalachians【
|

Since 1950 more than three million people have left their homes in Appalachia in search of better jobs and a better life in the cities of the Midwest and Southeast. Today they constitute one of the largest minorities in many of those cities. Yet they have been largely overlooked as a social group and ignored as a potential political force, partly because so little has been written about them.

This important book is the first to explore the Appalachian migration and its impact on the cities, on Appalachia, and on the migrants themselves, from the perspectives of sociology, economics, geography, and social planning. Eleven contributors offer new insights into the complex patterns of migration streams, the numbers of Appalachians in specific urban areas, their residential and occupational patterns in the cities, their adjustments to urban life and work, and the enormous social and economic impact of this mass movement.

Frontier Mission A History of Religion West of the Southern Appalachians to 1861【電子書籍】[ Walter Brownlow Posey ]
|

Religion is viewed here as the great cultural force which introduced and preserved civilization in the era of westward expansion from 1776 to the eve of the Civil War. In this first major study of religion in the South, Mr. Posey surveys the work of the seven chief denominationsーMethodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, Disciples of Christ, Cumberland Presbyterian, Roman Catholic, and Protestant Episcopalーas they developed in the frontier region that now comprises the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, and Missouri.

The great challenges faced by the churches, Mr. Posey believes, were, first, the barbarism continually threatening a people isolated in a savage wilderness and, second, the materialism likely to engross minds preoccupied with the hard necessities of frontier survival. Many frontiersmen who had wandered across the mountains to escape the trammels and restrictions of an established society were distrustful of traditional religion, and some forgot their inherited beliefs entirely. To overcome these attitudes demanded new approaches.

As organizations the churches faced great obstacles in attempting to minister to the folk on the moving frontier. One early answer was the camp meeting, and many of its featuresーan emphasis upon fervid emotion and individualism and the active participation and use of untrained people in religious servicesーcontinued as dominant elements in frontier religion. Indeed, those churches flexible enough to make use of these appeals were the most successful in spreading their beliefs. But inherent in the emotion and individualism was the danger of fragmentation, a danger most tragically evident when the slavery controversy split most southern denominations from their northern brethren. In education the churches fared better; even those that were at first skeptical of its benefits were by the time of the Civil War actively engaged in its support. But overall, the southern churches were hampered by too little money for the support of priests and preachers, too little communication between isolated congregations, and too little regard for service to the community.

At the center of the churches' workーthe care of congregations, the missions to the Indians and the Negroes, and the founding of educational institutionsーwere the frontier ministers. Mr. Posey pictures these menーstern and hard but full of zealーas performing a stupendous task in their efforts to build and maintain spiritual life on the southern frontier.

The Civil War in the West Victory and Defeat from the Appalachians to the Mississippi【電子書籍】[ Earl J. Hess ]
|

The Western theater of the Civil War, rich in agricultural resources and manpower and home to a large number of slaves, stretched 600 miles north to south and 450 miles east to west from the Appalachians to the Mississippi. If the South lost the West, there would be little hope of preserving the Confederacy. Earl J. Hess's comprehensive study of how Federal forces conquered and held the West examines the geographical difficulties of conducting campaigns in a vast land, as well as the toll irregular warfare took on soldiers and civilians alike. Hess balances a thorough knowledge of the battle lines with a deep understanding of what was happening within the occupied territories.
In addition to a mastery of logistics, Union victory hinged on making use of black manpower and developing policies for controlling constant unrest while winning campaigns. Effective use of technology, superior resource management, and an aggressive confidence went hand in hand with Federal success on the battlefield. In the end, Confederates did not have the manpower, supplies, transportation potential, or leadership to counter Union initiatives in this critical arena.

|

Deserter Country Civil War Opposition in the Pennsylvania Appalachians【電子書籍】[ Robert M. Sandow ]
|

A "balanced, compelling" study of one rural region in the North where war resistance flourished ( Civil War Times).

During the Civil War, there were explosions of resistance to the war throughout the Unionーfrom the deadly draft riots in New York City to other, less well-known outbreaks. In Deserter Country, Robert M. Sandow explores one of these least known "inner civil wars": the widespread, sometimes violent opposition in the Appalachian lumber country of Pennsylvania.

Sparsely settled, these mountains were home to divided communities that provided a safe haven for opponents of the war. The dissent of mountain folk reflected their own marginality in the face of rapidly increasing exploitation of timber resources by big firms, as well as partisan debates over loyalty.

One of the few studies of the northern Appalachians, this book draws revealing parallels to the War in the southern mountains, exploring the roots of rural protest in frontier development, the market economy, military policy, partisan debate, and everyday resistance. Sandow also sheds new light on the party politics of rural resistance, rejecting easy depictions of war-opponents as traitors and malcontents for a more nuanced and complicated study of class, economic upheaval, and localism.

|
