However, James does not simply narrow down his novella to a plain adventurous story ? la Indiana-Jones, he rather embellishes it with ingenuity and brilliancy. In order to reveal this brilliancy, the attentive reader will soon realize that it is important for this novella to read between the lines, rather than being just impressed by the artful acting of the narrator. As Gargano once stated: 'James' narrator prepares the reader for the 'big' scenes, for James himself the small and transitional scenes tell the fuller truth [...]'. Hence, even the spaces within the novella seem to be fraught with tension. When analysing James' novella, one will soon realize that there is a quite significant complexity within the text. Indeed, it seems that the characters of the story are so close connected in their thinking and their action that it becomes quite difficult for the reader to distinguish between the person who dupes and the one who is duped at the end of the story. This complexity becomes clear by analysing the story of Juliana's niece, Miss Tina. Although Miss Tina is not presented as the typical mighty heroine right at the outset of the story, and is often initially seen as a simple-minded minor character, whose only function is to serve as a tool for the narrator to achieve his goal, there is so much more about her. It tells the story of a literary biographer and publisher who is after what is believed to be a number of letters sent by the dead poet Jeffrey Aspern to his beloved?Juliana Bordereau. The protagonist, who is also the first-person narrator of the story, travels to Venice where the old woman lives and presents himself to her as a bourgeois writer who is just looking for lodging in her mansion. Thinking solely of Asperns letters, he begins flirting with Julianas aged niece in an attempt to get closer to his goal, yet the niece completely denies the existence of any such relics. When Juliana falls ill, the narrator sneaks into her room to search in her belongings. However, before he finds anything, the old lady catches him red-handed, yells at him and falls down on the floor. After his flight from the house, Juliana dies and her niece starts to blackmail him, claiming that she can provide him with the letters if he marries her. Der inhaltliche Schwerpunkt dieser Arbeit war zugleich auch ein Schwerpunkt von Eveline Burns Arbeiten: Die Alterssicherung im Rahmen des Social Security Act von 1935. Dieses Gesetzeswerk war ein Durchbruch in der US-amerikanischen Sozialpolitik. Erstmals ?bernahm der Staat die Aufgabe der sozialen Sicherung. Dieser Paradigmenwechsel markierte gleichzeitig den Beginn von Eveline Burns Engagement f?r mehr soziale Sicherheit in den USA. Im Laufe ihrer Karriere sollte sie die Gestaltung der sozialen Sicherungssysteme sowie die Sozial?konomie als eigenst?ndige Disziplin entscheidend mitbestimmen. Sie tat dies als ?konomin, als Mitglied in Regierungsgremien sowie als Mitglied und F?hrungspers?nlichkeit zahlreicher Verb?nde.
