Waking the Buddha How the Most Dynamic and Empowering Buddhist Movement in History Is Changing Our Concept of Religion【電子書籍】[ Clark Strand ]
|

Is there more to Buddhism than sitting in silent meditation? Is modern Buddhism relevant to the problems of daily life? Does it empower individuals to transform their lives? Or has Buddhism become too detached, so still and quiet that the Buddha has fallen asleep? Waking the Buddha tells the story of the Soka Gakkai International, the largest, most dynamic Buddhist movement in the world todayーand one that is waking up and shaking up Buddhism so it can truly work in ordinary people’s lives. Drawing on his long personal experience as a Buddhist teacher, journalist, and editor, Clark Strand offers broad insight into how and why the Soka Gakkai, with its commitment to social justice and its egalitarian approach, has become a role model, not only for other schools of Buddhism, but for other religions as well. Readers will be inspired by the struggles and triumphs of the Soka Gakkai’s three founding presidentsーindividuals who staked their lives on the teachings of the Lotus Sutra and the extraordinary power of those teachings to help people become happy.

Unity Conscious Leadership? (Interdependent Growth and Transformation) From a Buddhist Perspective【電子書籍】[ Joyce Z Wazirali ]
|

Overcome and transform crises for personal, cultural and professional growth using the lens of Unity Conscious Leadership?.

Have you ever wondered; - Why are people and organizations falling back into old habits and patterns? - Why is it so difficult to transcend mutual differences? - How to break through obstructive situations in life and business?

These were the questions Joyce Z. Wazirali has been asking herself, ever since childhood. She discovered that the answers were already in the questions.

On the other hand, Health, Happiness, and Peace are the deep-rooted human values people are longing for in life. These values have occupied us for many centuries. Without these values, people are suffering, and enduring violence in various ways. The undercurrent of collective trauma makes it still quite a quest to uncover them.

The only way to find the answers and solutions and to grow health, happiness and peace, is by changing our perspective on life.

New paradigm on leadership
The world we are in now has been created over the centuries from an old paradigm of Dualism; seeing life and acting in separation in a dynamic order of hierarchy and inequality. Here lies the root cause of obstructive patterns and paradoxes, the source of conflicts and crises.

To make a deep sustainable change we need to change the paradigm on life from Dualism to Unity Conscious Leadership?.

In this book Joyce takes you on a journey with the opportunity to perceive situations with the lens of Unity Conscious Leadership?; a new paradigm on leadership, to overcome and transform crises, and unlock potential, for; sustainable personal growth and development, cultural transformation and professional growth; and thus more health, happiness and peace in the world.

The book is full of wise and inspiring advice with numerous practical examples showing how Joyce has used Unity Conscious Leadership? not only to explore problems by using relational intelligence, but also to resolve them together with her clients.

To best explain the complexity of life in an easy way, Joyce has merged; The Eastern wisdom of the Lotus Sutra (created 2,600 years ago by Shakyamuni Buddha), the Western knowledge of system dynamics, quantum physics and collective field, with The layers of suffering and transformation (which she has obtained through 30+ years of experience in the field of; people and business growth from the perspective of Unity Conscious Leadership?).

Interdependent growth and transformation
Our growth is an interdependent process and is also the key point of Unity Conscious Leadership? and the Lotus Sutra.

Toxic relationships are often the cause of health problems, affecting people's feeling of happiness and sense of peace. This also applies to relationships within organizations. As a result affecting the health of the people, the culture and customer base and thus the health of the organization in many aspects.

Transformation is the result of interacting with others with the intention of fostering mutual growth. Using obstacles for growth.

A Baptist Preacher's Buddhist Teacher How My Interfaith Journey with Daisaku Ikeda Made Me a Better Christian【電子書籍】[ Lawrence Edward Carter Sr. ]
|

In this inspiring, soul-stirring memoir, Lawrence E. Carter Sr., founding dean of the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel, shares his remarkable quest to experience King's "beloved community" and his surprising discovery in mid-life that King's dream was being realized by the Japanese Buddhist philosopher and tireless peace worker Daisaku Ikeda. Coming of age on the cusp of the American Civil Rights Movement, Carter was personally mentored by Martin Luther King Jr. and followed in his footsteps, first to get an advanced degree in theology at Boston University and then to teach and train a new generation of activists and ministers at King's alma mater, Morehouse College. Over the years, however, Carter was disheartened to watch the radical cosmic vision at the heart of King's message gradually diluted and marginalized. He found himself in near despairーuntil his remarkable encounter with the lay Buddhist association Soka Gakkai International and a life-changing meeting with Ikeda, its president. Carter knew that King had been inspired by Gandhi, a Hindu, and now Ikeda, a Buddhist, was showing him how King's message of justice, equality, and the fundamental dignity of life could be carried to millions of people around the world. What ensued was not a conversion but a conversationーabout the essential role of interfaith dialogue, the primacy of education, and the value of a living faith to create a human revolution and realize at last Martin Luther King's truest dream of a global world house. In these dark and frustrating times, the powerful dialogue between Carter and Ikeda gives hope and guidance to a new generation of reformers, activists, and visionaries.

The Oxford Handbook of Buddhist Ethics【
|

Many forms of Buddhism, divergent in philosophy and style, emerged as Buddhism filtered out of India into other parts of Asia. Nonetheless, all of them embodied an ethical core that is remarkably consistent. Articulated by the historical Buddha in his first sermon, this moral core is founded on the concept of karmaーthat intentions and actions have future consequences for an individualーand is summarized as Right Speech, Right Action, and Right Livelihood, three of the elements of the Eightfold Path. Although they were later elaborated and interpreted in a multitude of ways, none of these core principles were ever abandoned. The Oxford Handbook of Buddhist Ethics provides a comprehensive overview of the field of Buddhist ethics in the twenty-first century. The Handbook discusses the foundations of Buddhist ethics focusing on karma and the precepts looking at abstinence from harming others, stealing, and intoxication. It considers ethics in the different Buddhist traditions and the similarities they share, and compares Buddhist ethics to Western ethics and the psychology of moral judgments. The volume also investigates Buddhism and society analysing economics, environmental ethics, and Just War ethics. The final section focuses on contemporary issues surrounding Buddhist ethics, including gender, sexuality, animal rights, and euthanasia. This groundbreaking collection offers an indispensable reference work for students and scholars of Buddhist ethics and comparative moral philosophy.

The Gospel of Buddha, Compiled from Ancient Records Unveiling the Ancient Wisdom: A Journey into Buddhist Philosophy and Spiritual Teachings【電子書籍】[ Paul Carus ]
|

In "The Gospel of Buddha, Compiled from Ancient Records," Paul Carus presents a meticulous synthesis of Buddhist teachings, drawn from a variety of ancient texts, including the Pali Canon and Mahayana scriptures. Carus employs a clear and accessible literary style that effectively translates complex spiritual concepts into a narrative rich with philosophical insight. This work situates itself within the late 19th-century context of Western fascination with Eastern religions, aiming to demystify Buddhism for a Western audience while preserving its authentic essence and teachings on ethics, compassion, and enlightenment. Paul Carus, a pioneering scholar and philosopher, was instrumental in the introduction of Eastern thought to the Western world. His background in philosophy and his close association with prominent figures in both the American and European intellectual circles allowed him to bridge cultural gaps. Carus'??s interest in Buddhism was not merely scholarly; it was driven by a desire to promote understanding and harmony among differing belief systems during a period marked by religious and cultural upheaval. This book is highly recommended for readers seeking an introductory yet profound exploration of Buddhist philosophy. Carus'??s informative prose makes it suitable for novices and scholars alike, encouraging a deep appreciation of Buddhism's moral teachings. "The Gospel of Buddha" is essential for anyone interested in understanding the spiritual and ethical dimensions of this ancient tradition.

Mysticism, Christian and Buddhist【電子書籍】[ Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki ]
|

This book has no pretension to be a thorough, systematic study of the subject. It is more or less a collection of studies the author has written from time to time in the course of his readings, especially of Meister Eckhart as representative of Christian mysticism. For Eckhart's thoughts come most closely to those of Zen and Shin. Zen and Shin superficially differ: one is known as Jiriki, the "self-power" school, while the other is Tariki, the "other-power" school. But there is something common to both, which will be felt by the reader. Eckhart, Zen, and Shin thus can be grouped together as belonging to the great school of mysticism. The underlying chain of relationship among the three may not be always obvious in the following pages. The author's hope, however, is that they are provocative enough to induce Western scholars to take up the subject for their study.

The author wishes to acknowledge his debts to the two English translations of Meister Eckhart, the first by C. de B. Evans and the second by Raymond B. Blakney, from which he has very liberally quoted.

Tales of Zen Buddhist Scoundrels【電子書籍】[ Mel C. Thompson ]
|

Sensei, a man accused of laziness, malingering, sexual misconduct, alcoholism, blasphemy and depression, wanders in a netherworld somewhere between modern Los Angeles and ancient Kyoto. He appears under many names and in many guises, and often belongs to many religions or no religion. He also seems indifferent to politics, long-term employment and monogamous relationships, leaving him open to the charges of agnosticism, amorality and nihilism. He wanders from temple to dive bar, and from holy lands to inner cities. Going from job to job, sometimes serving as a priest, sometimes forced into emeritus status, and at other times wandering the streets homeless, he always seeks, though his adventures, to wreck any attempts at smugness or certainty. Whatever beliefs his interlocutors are holding on to, even if it's Buddhism itself, Sensei will, through his escapades, unearth the unfounded assumptions that guide most of his questioners through their predictable days. Sensei is, above all things, unpredictable, and one can never tell whether he will respond to a given situation with a most transcendent gentleness or the most explosive violence. In the Bodhisattva tradition, he uses different medicines to cure different illnesses, as the old sutras used to say.

Since He who is Infinite attained unto the Wisdom Supreme, the long, long ages of ten Kalpas have rolled away. The Light of His Dharma-Kaya is in this world eyes to the blind. 2. Seek refuge in the True Illumination! For the light of His Wisdom is infinite. In all the worlds there is nothing upon which His light shines not. 3. Take refuge in the Light universal. As the Light of His deliverance is boundless, he who is within it is freed from the lie of affirmation or denial. 4. Seek refuge in That which is beyond understanding, For His glory is all-embracing as the air. It shineth and pierceth all things, and there is nothing hid from the light thereof. 5. Take refuge in the ultimate Strength, for His pure radiance is above all things. He who perceiveth this Light is set free from the fetters of Karma. 6. Seek refuge in the World-Honoured. Since His glorious radiance is above all He is called the Buddha of Divine Light. And by Him is the darkness of the three worlds Enlightened. 7. Excellent is the Light of His Wisdom. Therefore is he called the Buddha of Clear Shining. He who is within the Light, being washed from the soil of Karma, shall attain unto the final deliverance. 8. Take refuge in the Mighty Consoler. Wheresoever His mercy shineth throughout all the worlds, men rejoice in its gladdening light. 9. The darkness of ignorance perisheth before His light. Therefore is He hailed as the Buddha of Radiant Wisdom. All the Buddhas and the threefold choir of sages praise Him. 10. His glory shineth for ever and ever. Therefore is He called the Buddha of Everlasting Light. Most excellent is the virtue of this light, for he who perceiveth it is born into Paradise without dissolution of being.

A Monastery on the Move Art and Politics in Later Buddhist Mongolia【電子書籍】[ Tsultemin Uranchimeg ]
|

In 1639, while the G?luk School of the Fifth Dalai Lama and Qing emperors vied for supreme authority in Inner Asia, Zanabazar (1635?1723), a young descendent of Chinggis Khaan, was proclaimed the new Jebtsundampa ruler of the Khalkha Mongols. Over the next three centuries, the ger (yurt) erected to commemorate this event would become the mobile monastery Ikh Kh?ree, the political seat of the Jebtsundampas and a major center of Mongolian Buddhism. When the monastery and its surrounding structures were destroyed in the 1930s, they were rebuilt and renamed Ulaanbaatar, the modern-day capital of Mongolia.

Based on little-known works of Mongolian Buddhist art and architecture, A Monastery on the Move presents the intricate and colorful history of Ikh Kh?ree and of Zanabazar, himself an eminent artist. Author Uranchimeg Tsultemin makes the case for a multifaceted understanding of Mongol agency during the G?luk’s political ascendancy and the Qing appropriation of the Mongol concept of dual rulership (shashin t?r) as the nominal “Buddhist Government.” In rich conversation with heretofore unpublished textual, archeological, and archival sources (including ritualized oral histories), Uranchimeg argues that the Qing emperors’ “Buddhist Government” was distinctly different from the Mongol vision of sovereignty, which held Zanabazar and his succeeding Jebtsundampa reincarnates to be Mongolia’s rightful rulers. This vision culminated in their independence from the Qing and the establishment of the Jebtsundampa’s theocractic government in 1911.

A groundbreaking work, A Monastery on the Move provides a fascinating, in-depth analysis and interpretation of Mongolian Buddhist art and its role in shaping borders and shifting powers in Inner Asia.

The 'Mahapadana Sutta,' a pivotal text within the Pali Canon, encapsulates the essence of Theravada Buddhism through its exploration of historical and existential themes. In this discourse, the Buddha narrates the lineage of past Buddhas, weaving together a vibrant tapestry of moral impermanence and exemplifying the cyclical nature of existence. Rhys Davids adopts a scholarly approach, employing textual analysis and meticulous translations that reflect both the poetic intricacies of ancient Pali and the philosophical undercurrents of early Buddhist thought.
