The Babylonian Captivity of the Church A Theological Treatise【電子書籍】[ Martin Luther ]

In Martin Luther's 'The Babylonian Captivity of the Church,' the author delves into a critical analysis of the Catholic Church's sacraments and the power structure within it. Written in a passionate and persuasive tone, Luther challenges the Church's practices and beliefs, calling for reform and a return to the true teachings of Christianity. This work is a pivotal piece in the Protestant Reformation, advocating for a more direct relationship between individuals and God, without the need for intermediary figures. The book is a fierce critique of the Church's control over salvation through sacraments like confession and communion. Martin Luther, a German monk and theologian, penned 'The Babylonian Captivity of the Church' in response to the corruption and abuses he witnessed within the Catholic Church. His deep-rooted beliefs in the Bible as the ultimate authority and the priesthood of all believers fueled his desire to challenge the Church's teachings and promote a more personal and inclusive form of Christianity. For readers interested in understanding the history of the Protestant Reformation and the ideological foundations of Protestantism, Martin Luther's 'The Babylonian Captivity of the Church' offers a profound and thought-provoking exploration of the theological issues that sparked a major religious revolution in Europe. This book is essential for anyone seeking insight into the intellectual and spiritual journey that led to the emergence of Protestant Christianity.

The Reforming Treatises of Martin Luther The Most Influential Revolutionary Works: Address to the Christian Nobility of the German Nation, Prelude on the Babylonian Captivity of the Church & A Treatise on Christian Liberty【電子書籍】

"Address to the Christian Nobility of the German Nation" is the first of the three tracts written by Martin Luther in 1520. In this work, he defined for the first time the signature doctrines of the priesthood of all believers and the two kingdoms. After the church made a strong attempt at drawing distinct lines on saying who had authority in the spiritual sphere and its matters. This division of Christians into spheres motivated Luther to write on the "three walls" the "Romanists" created to protect themselves from reform. "Prelude on the Babylonian Captivity of the Church" is a theological treatise, the second of the three major tracts from 1520. In this work Luther examines the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church in the light of his interpretation of the Bible. With regard to the Eucharist, he advocates restoring the cup to the laity, dismisses the Catholic doctrine of Transubstantiation but affirms the real presence of the body and blood of Christ in the Eucharist, and rejects the teaching that the Mass is a sacrifice offered to God. "A Treatise on Christian Liberty" is the third of Luther's major reforming treatises of 1520. It developed the concept that as fully forgiven children of God, Christians are no longer compelled to keep God's law; however, they freely and willingly serve God and their neighbors. Luther also further develops the concept of justification by faith. In the treatise, Luther stated, "A Christian is a perfectly free lord of all, subject to none. A Christian is a perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject to all."

Jewish-Christian Dialogues on Scripture in Late Antiquity Heretic Narratives of the Babylonian Talmud【電子書籍】[ Michal Bar-Asher Siegal ]

Stories portraying heretics ('minim') in rabbinic literature are a central site of rabbinic engagement with the 'other'. These stories typically involve a conflict over the interpretation of a biblical verse in which the rabbinic figure emerges victorious in the face of a challenge presented by the heretic. In this book, Michal Bar-Asher Siegal focuses on heretic narratives of the Babylonian Talmud that share a common literary structure, strong polemical language and the formula, 'Fool, look to the end of the verse'. She marshals previously untapped Christian materials to arrive at new interpretations of familiar texts and illuminate the complex relationship between Jews and Christians in Late Antiquity. Bar-Asher Siegal argues that these Talmudic literary creations must be seen as part of a boundary-creating discourse that clearly distinguishes the rabbinic position from that of contemporaneous Christians and adds to a growing understanding of the rabbinic authors' familiarity with Christian traditions.

THE ENUMA ELISH Babylonian creation myth【電子書籍】[ Shemuel Bensusan ]

The En?ma Eli? (Akkadian Cuneiform: 〓〓〓〓〓, also spelled "Enuma Elish") is the Babylonian creation myth (named after its opening words). It was recovered by English archaeologist Austen Henry Layard in 1849 (in fragmentary form) in the ruined Library of Ashurbanipal at Nineveh (Mosul, Iraq). A form of the myth was first published by English Assyriologist George Smith in 1876; active research and further excavations led to near completion of the texts and improved translation.

The En?ma Eli? has about a thousand lines and is recorded in Old Babylonian on seven clay tablets, each holding between 115 and 170 lines of Sumero-Akkadian cuneiform script. Most of Tablet V has never been recovered, but, aside from this lacuna, the text is almost complete.

This epic is one of the most important sources revealing the Babylonian worldview. Over the seven tablets, it describes the creation of the world, a battle between gods focused on the supremacy of Marduk, the creation of man destined for the service of the Mesopotamian deities, and it ends with a long passage praising Marduk. Its primary original purpose is unknown, although a version is known to have been used for certain festivals. There may also have been a political element to the myth, centered on the legitimization or primacy of Mesopotamia over Assyria. Some later versions replace Marduk with the Assyrian primary god Ashur.

The En?ma Eli? exists in various copies from Babylon and Assyria. The version from the archaeological Library of Ashurbanipal dates to the 7th century BCE. The composition of the text probably dates to the late 2nd millennium BCE, or even earlier, to the time of Hammurabi during the Old Babylonian Period (1900?1600 BCE). Some elements of the myth are attested by illustrations that date to, at least, as early as the Kassite era (roughly 16th?12th centuries BCE).

Shbahoth ? Songs of Praise in the Babylonian Jewish Tradition From Baghdad to Bombay and London【電子書籍】[ Sara Manasseh ]

Sara Manasseh brings a significant, but less widely-known, Jewish repertoire and tradition to the attention of both the Jewish community (Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Oriental) and the wider global community. The book showcases thirty-one songs and includes English translations, complete Hebrew texts, transliterations and the music notation for each song. The accompanying downloadable resources include eighteen of the thirty-one songs, sung by Manasseh, accompanied by 'ud and percussion. The remaining thirteen songs are available separately on the album Treasures, performed by Rivers of Babylon, directed by Manasseh - : www.riversofbabylon.com. While in the past a book of songs, with Hebrew text only, was sufficient for bearers of the tradition, the present package represents a song collection for the twenty-first century, with greater resources to support the learning and maintenance of the tradition. Manasseh argues that the strong inter-relationship of Jewish and Arab traditions in this repertoire - linguistically and musically - is significant and provides an intercultural tool to promote communication, tolerance, understanding, harmony and respect. The singing of the Shbahoth (the Baghdadian Jewish term for 'Songs of Praise') has been a significant aspect of Jewish life in Iraq and continues to be valued by those in the Babylonian Jewish diaspora.

Ramat Ra?el VI The Renewed Excavations by the Tel Aviv?Heidelberg Expedition (2005?2010). The Babylonian-Persian Pit【電子書籍】[ Oded Lipschits ]

This is part of a three-volume final report of the renewed excavations at Ramat Ra?el by the Tel Aviv?Heidelberg Expedition (2005ー2010). It presents the finds from the Babylonian-Persian pit, one of the most dramatic find-spots at Ramat Ra?el. The pit yielded a rich assemblage of pottery vessels and yhwd, lion, and sixth-century “private” stamp impressions, including, for the first time, complete restored stamped jars, jars bearing two handles stamped with different yhwd impressions, and jars bearing both lion and “private” stamp impressions on their bodies. Residue analysis was conducted on many of the vessels excavated from the pit to analyze their contents, yielding surprising results. The finds contribute to our understanding of the pottery of the Babylonian and early Persian periods (6thー5th centuries BCE) and to the study of the development of the stamped-jar administration in the province of Yehud under Babylonian and Persian rule.

Also available from Eisenbrauns: Ramat Ra?el III: Final Publication of Aharoni'’s Excavations at Ramat Ra?el (1954, 1959?1962) by Oded Lipschits, Yuval Gadot, and Liora Freud; and Ramat Ra?el IV: The Renewed Excavations by the Tel Aviv?Heidelberg Expedition (2005?2010): Stratigraphy and Architecture, by Oded Lipschits, Mandred Oeming, and Yuval Gadot.

The Babylonian Saga of Gilgamesh【電子書籍】[ Aa. Vv ]

The Gilgamesh Epic is the most notable literary product of Babylonia as yet discovered in the mounds of Mesopotamia. It recounts the exploits and adventures of a favorite hero, and in its final form covers twelve tablets, each tablet consisting of six columns (three on the obverse and three on the reverse) of about 50 lines for each column, or a total of about 3600 lines. Of this total, however, barely more than one-half has been found among the remains of the great collection of cuneiform tablets gathered by King Ashurbanapal (668?626 B.C.) in his palace at Nineveh, and discovered by Layard in 1854 in the course of his excavations of the mound Kouyunjik (opposite Mosul). The fragments of the epic painfully gatheredーchiefly by George Smithーfrom the circa 30,000 tablets and bits of tablets brought to the British Museum were published in model form by Professor Paul Haupt; and that edition still remains the primary source for our study of the Epic.

Fault, Responsibility, and Administrative Law in Late Babylonian Legal Texts【電子書籍】[ F. Rachel Magdalene ]

This book presents a reassessment of the governmental systems of the Late Babylonian periodーspecifically those of the Neo-Babylonian and early Persian empiresーand provides evidence demonstrating that these are among the first to have developed an early form of administrative law.

The present study revolves around a particular expression that, in its most common form, reads ???u ?a ?arri i?addad and can be translated as “he will be guilty (of an offense) against the king.” The authors analyze ninety-six documents, thirty-two of which have not been previously published, discussing each text in detail, including the syntax of this clause and its legal consequences, which involve the delegation of responsibility in an administrative context. Placing these documents in their historical and institutional contexts, and drawing from the theories of Max Weber and S. N. Eisenstadt, the authors aim to show that the administrative bureaucracy underlying these documents was a more complex, systematized, and rational system than has previously been recognized.

Accompanied by extensive indexes, as well as transcriptions and translations of each text analyzed here, this book breaks new ground in the study of ancient legal systems.

Time in the Babylonian Talmud Natural and Imagined Times in Jewish Law and Narrative【電子書籍】[ Lynn Kaye ]

In this book, Lynn Kaye examines how rabbis of late antiquity thought about time through their legal reasoning and storytelling, and what these insights mean for thinking about time today. Providing close readings of legal and narrative texts in the Babylonian Talmud, she compares temporal ideas with related concepts in ancient and modern philosophical texts and in religious traditions from late antique Mesopotamia. Kaye demonstrates that temporal flexibility in the Babylonian Talmud is a means of exploring and resolving legal uncertainties, as well as a tool to tell stories that convey ideas effectively and dramatically. Her book, the first on time in the Talmud, makes accessible complex legal texts and philosophical ideas. It also connects the literature of late antique Judaism with broader theological and philosophical debates about time.

Sumerian Literary Texts in the Sch?yen Collection Volume 1: Literary Sources on Old Babylonian Religion【電子書籍】[ Christopher Metcalf ]

The first in a series of volumes publishing the Sumerian literary texts in the Sch?yen Collection, this book makes available, for the first time, editions of seventeen cuneiform tablets, dating to ca. 2000 BCE and containing works of Sumerian religious poetry. Edited, translated, and annotated by Christopher Metcalf, these poems shed light on the interaction between cult, scholarship, and scribal culture in Mesopotamia in the early second millennium BCE.

The present volume contains fourteen songs composed in praise of the various gods of the Mesopotamian pantheon; it is believed that these songs were typically performed in temple cults. Among them are a song in praise of Sud, goddess of the ancient Mesopotamian city Shuruppak; a song describing the statue of the protective goddess Lamma-saga in the “Sacred City” temple complex at Girsu; and a previously unknown hymn dedicated to the creator god Enki. Each text is provided in transliteration and translation and accompanied by hand-copies and images of the tablets themselves.

Expertly contextualizing each song in Babylonian religious and literary history, this thoroughly competent editio princeps will prove a valuable tool for scholars interested in the literary and religious traditions of ancient Mesopotamia.

The Babylonian Quartet The Furnace the Restoration the Den【電子書籍】[ J. Clarke McIntosh ]

Why do we read? We read to be entertained, challenged, informed, and as The Shadowlands declares, “we read to know we are not alone.” Why do Christians read? We need to learn more about God, ourselves, our journey. The Babylonian Quartet is a collection of three stories that retell the timeless and timely struggle of four adolescents forcibly removed from their homes and transported to another culture. It tells of their bonding together, their commitments to God and one another that enables them to stand firmly against forces that threaten their lives and seek to push them into compromise.
The Furnace tells the story of the exile of four Hebrew youths arriving in Babylon and committing themselves to excellence. It tells of the revelation of God to Daniel regarding Nebuchadnezzar’s dream and interpretation. It culminates in the other three youths standing firm and finding God’s power and warmth in the Babylonian monarch’s furnace.
The Restoration picks up after The Furnace, bringing some romance into the lives of the youths, their elevation in the Chaldean realm, the interpretation of the second dream of Nebuchadnezzar, and their work to assure his reclaiming of his throne following his debacle. It culminates in the profession of faith by the great Chaldean monarch.
The Den begins with the handwriting on the wall, the collapse of the Chaldean regime, and the division of the quartet. Azariah (Abed-nego) the narrator of all three books, ends up in Susa with Daniel, whereas Hananiah (Shadrach) and Mishael (Meshack) stay in Babylon. The story recounts the rise of Daniel to the position of greatest authority, the treachery of his “colleagues,” culminating in his night with the lions.

The Babylonian Planet Culture and Encounter Under Globalization【電子書籍】[ Sonja Neef ]

What is astro-culture? In The Babylonian Planet it is unfolded as an aesthetic, an idea, a field of study, a position, and a practice. It helps to engineer the shift from a world view that is segregated to one that is integrated ? from global to planetary; from distance to intimacy and where closeness and cosmic distance live side-by-side.

In this tour de force, Sonja Neef takes her cue from Edouard Glissant's vision of multilingualism and reignites the myth of the Tower of Babel to anticipate new forms of cultural encounter. For her, Babel is an organic construction site at which she fuses theoretical analysis and case studies of artists, writers and thinkers like William Kentridge, Orhan Pamuk and Immanuel Kant. Her skilful interrogations then allow her to paint a portrait of art and culture that abolishes the horizon as a barrier to vision and reclaims it as a place of contact and relation.

By combining the Babylonian concept of the encounter and the planetary concept of the whole-earth, Neef creates a space ? an astro-culture ? in which she can examine topics as varied as language, translation, media, modernity, migration and the moon. In doing so, she instigates a renewed cultural understanding receptive to the kinder forms of cultural encounter and globalisation she hopes will come.

An Old Babylonian Version of the Gilgamesh Epic【電子書籍】[ Albert Tobias Clay ]

The Epic of Gilgamesh is an epic poem from ancient Mesopotamia. Dating from the Third Dynasty of Ur (circa 2100 BC), it is often regarded as the earliest surviving great work of literature. The literary history of Gilgamesh begins with five Sumerian poems about 'Bilgamesh' - Sumerian for 'Gilgamesh', king of Uruk. These independent stories were later used as source material for a combined epic. The first surviving version of this combined epic, known as the "Old Babylonian" version, dates to the 18th century BC and is titled after its incipit, Sh?tur eli sharr? ("Surpassing All Other Kings"). Only a few tablets of it have survived. The later "Standard" version dates from the 13th to the 10th centuries BC and bears the incipit Sha naqba ?muru ("He who Saw the Deep", in modern terms: "He who Sees the Unknown"). Approximately two thirds of this longer, twelve-tablet version have been recovered. Some of the best copies were discovered in the library ruins of the 7th-century BC Assyrian king Ashurbanipal.

Sexuality in the Babylonian Talmud Christian and Sasanian Contexts in Late Antiquity【電子書籍】[ Yishai Kiel ]

Within this close textual analysis of the Babylonian Talmud, Yishai Kiel explores rabbinic discussions of sex in light of cultural assumptions and dispositions that pervaded the cultures of late antiquity and particularly the Iranian world. By negotiating the Iranian context of the rabbinic discussion alongside the Christian backdrop, this groundbreaking volume presents a balanced and nuanced portrayal of the rabbinic discourse on sexuality and situates rabbinic discussions of sex more broadly at the crossroads of late antique cultures. The study is divided into two thematic sections: the first centers on the broader aspects of rabbinic discourse on sexuality while the second hones in on rabbinic discussions of sexual prohibitions and the classification of permissible and prohibited partnerships, with particular attention to rabbinic discussions of incest. Essential reading for scholars and graduate students of Judaic studies, early Christianity, and Iranian studies, as well as those interested in religious studies and comparative religion.
