Fifteen-year-old Art wanted to spend the summer at home, with Dad, being normal. She does not want to be here, on Mum’s work trip, with her colleague and his sulky, identikit daughter.

Worse, Mum has booked a place in the middle of nowhere that looks like other bits of houses stuck together. And that’s just the outside. Inside, there’s a half-empty book that does not make sense, and a locked door that appears from nowhere (and might be able to think for itself).

The whole thing is flat-out weird.

Except, what if appearances really do deceive? What if ‘weird’ is, itself, up for grabs?

The old, ugly house soon becomes the backdrop for an unforgettable summer. One that changes everything. Everything. Even reality.

Discipleship Begins with Beholding【電子書籍】[ Samuel Whitefield ]

What do you behold? Whatever it is, you will be shaped into that image.
Discipleship is the primary task Jesus gave the church in this age, so every believer must answer two questions:

Am I making disciples?

Am I discipling people and being discipled according to the biblical paradigm?

Discipleship is often reduced to acquiring new information, embracing certain disciplines, or adopting certain behaviors, but this is not the heart of discipleship. You can know information, live a disciplined life, and behave properly yet not be discipled. At its foundation, discipleship is a process that produces transformation as a people corporately behold the beauty of God in the person of Jesus. If discipleship begins in any other place, it may accomplish some valuable things, but it has lost sight of its biblical framework.
We have taught people how to behave, but have we taught them how to behold?
If people embrace certain rhythms and engage in certain disciplines but are not fascinated by the beauty of God, then they are not discipled. Accordingly, we must lead people to behold God and be transformed into His image. God is not looking for a people who behave like Him. He is looking for a people who become like Him.
In Discipleship Begins with Beholding discover:

Why biblical discipleship is centered on corporately beholding the beauty of God in the person of Jesus.

Why beholding has always been central to God's purposes for His people.

How corporate beholding is foundational to the way God relates to His people beginning in the Garden of Eden and continuing through the Exodus, the Tabernacle of David, and the New Testament church.

How God plans to accomplish His purposes through a people who behold Him and become like Him.

How to behold the beauty of God on your own and together with others.

Why simple disciplines like singing are far more powerful than we realize.

The great need of our time is a people who are beholding the beauty of God by the Spirit and are satisfied in Him.

Beholding the Tree of Life: A Rabbinic Approach to the Book of Mormon【電子書籍】[ Bradley J. Kramer ]

Too often readers approach the Book of Mormon simply as a collection of quotations, an inspired anthology to be scanned quickly and routinely recited. In Beholding the Tree of Life Bradley J. Kramer encourages his readers to slow down, to step back, and to contemplate the literary qualities of the Book of Mormon using interpretive techniques developed by Talmudic and post-Talmudic rabbis. Specifically, Kramer shows how to read the Book of Mormon closely, in levels, paying attention to the details of its expression as well as to its overall connection to the Hebrew Scripturesーall in order to better appreciate the beauty of the Book of Mormon and its limitless capacity to convey divine meaning.

Mormonism, Empathy, and Aesthetics Beholding the Body【電子書籍】[ Gary Ettari ]

This book analyzes the role that the physical body plays in foundational Mormon doctrine, and claims that such an analysis reveals a model of empathy that has significant implications for the field of Mormon aesthetics. This volume achieves three main goals: It elucidates the Mormonism's relationship with the body, it illuminates Mormonism’s traditional approaches to understanding and appreciating art, and it suggests that the body as Mormonism conceives of it allows for the employment of an aesthetic framework rooted in bodily empathy rather than traditional Christian or Mormon moral values per se. In support of this argument, several chapters of the book apply Mormonism’s theology of the body to paintings and poems by contemporary Mormon artists and writers. An examination of those works reveals that the seeds of a new Mormon aesthetic are germinating, but have yet to significantly shift traditional Mormon thought regarding the role and function of art.

Beholding Disability in Renaissance England【電子書籍】[ Allison P. Hobgood ]

Human variation has always existed, though it has been conceived of and responded to variably. Beholding Disability in Renaissance England interprets sixteenth- and seventeenth-century literature to explore the fraught distinctiveness of human bodyminds and the deliberate ways they were constructed in early modernity as able, and not. Hobgood examines early modern disability, ableism, and disability gain, purposefully employing these contemporary concepts to make clear how disability has historically been disavowedーand avowed too. Thus, this book models how modern ideas and terms make the weight of the past more visible as it marks the present, and cultivates dialogue in which early modern and contemporary theoretical models are mutually informative.

Beholding Disability also uncovers crucial counterdiscourses circulating in the English Renaissance that opposed cultural fantasies of ability and had a keen sensibility toward non-normative embodiments. Hobgood reads impairments as varied as epilepsy, stuttering, disfigurement, deafness, chronic pain, blindness, and castration in order to understand not just powerful fictions of ability present during the Renaissance but also the somewhat paradoxical, surprising ways these ableist ideals provided creative fodder for many Renaissance writers and thinkers. Ultimately, Beholding Disability asks us to reconsider what we think we know about being human both in early modernity, and today.

Beholding the Glory: Beyond the Veil, Holy Place, Holy of Hollies, the Ark and Into the Realms of Heaven【電子書籍】[ John King Hill ]

Beholding the Glory is written to broaden and deepen your experience of the glory, and to help you explore the depths of Heaven's secret life, authority and power. Entering the glory is embracing and welcoming a life so secretive, and so powerful that anything that go in, disappears and without revelation, there is no way to re-call it. It is a depth that God has prepared for those that love Him, and who are called according to His extra-ordinary purpose. Sacrifice has always been the bedrock -- a pillar of our worship and service to appease and appeal to God. When we offer our lives to experience the deeper depths of God, we move Him to step out and do the rest, and that is how we find our rest in God. In Beholding the Glory, You will:

Go from the basic authority and power of the Believer to understanding the supreme authority and power of God.
See why the anointing is not comparable with the glory, and move from basic Christian confession to operating in extra-ordinary authority and power.
Learn the differences between welcoming and embracing the manifestation and release of the anointing versus the revelation of the glory of God.
See why you need the glory life more than this life, and why it is enjoying the comfort of operating from the realms of Heaven.
Beholding the Glory will deeply move and compel You to look closer into your relationship with God. How deep, and how high do you want to go in God? Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst...for they shall be filled.

Beholding Situated Art and the Aesthetics of Reception【電子書籍】[ Ken Wilder ]

Beholding considers the spatially situated encounter between artwork and spectator. It argues that artworks created for specific places or conditions structure a reciprocal encounter, which is completed by the presence of a beholder. These are works which demand the 'beholder's share', but not, as Ernst Gombrich famously claimed, to sustain an illusion. Rather, Beholding reconfigures Gombrich's notion of the beholder's share as a set of 'licensed' imaginative and cognitive projections.

Each chapter frames a particular work of art from the remit of a complementary theoretical text. The book establishes a transhistorical notion of the spatially situated encounter, and considers the role of the architectural host in bringing the beholder's orientation into play. The book engages a diverse range of practices: from Renaissance painting and group portraiture to intermedia practices of installation and performance art. Written within the broad remit of reception aesthetics, the book proposes a phenomenological theory of beholding, argued through an in-depth examination of artworks and their spatial contexts, selected for their explanatory potential. These various encounters allocate different constitutive roles to the beholder, bringing not only spatial and temporal orientation into play, but also a repertoire of anticipated ideas and beliefs.

The very idea of humanity seems to be in crisis. Born in the ashes of devastation after the slaughter of millions, the liberal conception of humanity imagined a suffering victim in need of salvation. Today, this figure appears less and less capable of galvanizing the political imagination. But without it, how are we to respond to the inhumane violence that overwhelms our political and philosophical registers? How can we make sense of the violence that was carried out in the name of humanism? And how can we develop more ethical relations without becoming parasitic on the pain of others?

Through a critical exploration of violence and the sacred, Ecce Humanitas recasts the fall of liberal humanism. Brad Evans offers a rich analysis of the changing nature of sacrificial violence, from its theological origins to the exhaustion of the victim in the contemporary world. He critiques the aestheticization that turns victims into sacred objects, sacrificial figures that demand response, perpetuating a cycle of violence that is seen as natural and inevitable. In novel readings of classic and contemporary works, Evans traces the sacralization of violence as well as art’s potential to incite resistance. Countering the continued annihilation of life, Ecce Humanitas calls for liberating the political imagination from the scene of sacrifice. A new aesthetics provides a form of transgressive witnessing that challenges the ubiquity of violence and allows us to go beyond humanism to imagine a truly liberated humanity.

Jesus through Medieval Eyes will take you on an exploration of medieval representations of Jesus in theology and literature.

Who is Jesus? What is he like? And who am I, encountering Jesus? These questions were just as important to Christians in the Middle Ages as they are today.

And yetーas C.S. Lewis notedーthe modern church tends to forget that people of different cultures and times also thought carefully about who Jesus was; and sometimes their ideas and emphases were different.

Medievalist scholar Grace Hamman believes that we can deepen our understanding and adoration of Christ by looking to the Christians of the Middle Ages. Medieval Europeans were also suffering through pandemics, dealing with political and ecclesial corruption and instability, and reckoning with gender, money, and power. But their concerns and imaginations are unlike ours. Their ideas, narratives, and art about Jesus open up paradoxically fresh and ancient ways to approach and adore Christーand to reveal where our own cultural ideals about the Messiah fall short.

Medieval representations of Jesus span from the familiarーlike Jesus as the Judge at the End of Days, or Jesus as the Lover of the Song of Songsーto the more unusual, like Jesus as Our Mother. Through the words of medieval people like Julian of Norwich, St. Bernard of Clairvaux, Margery Kempe, and St. Thomas Aquinas, we meet these faces of Jesus and find renewed ways to love the Savior, in the words of St. Augustine, that "beauty so ancient and so new."
