NATIONAL BESTSELLER
WINNER OF THE BOOKER PRIZE

“A must-read about modern Britain and womanhood . . . An impressive, fierce novel about the lives of black British families, their struggles, pains, laughter, longings and loves . . . Her style is passionate, razor-sharp, brimming with energy and humor. There is never a single moment of dullness in this book and the pace does not allow you to turn away from its momentum.” ーBooker Prize Judges

Bernardine Evaristo is the winner of the 2019 Booker Prize and the first black woman to receive this highest literary honor in the English language. Girl, Woman, Other is a magnificent portrayal of the intersections of identity and a moving and hopeful story of an interconnected group of Black British women that paints a vivid portrait of the state of contemporary Britain and looks back to the legacy of Britain’s colonial history in Africa and the Caribbean.

The twelve central characters of this multi-voiced novel lead vastly different lives: Amma is a newly acclaimed playwright whose work often explores her Black lesbian identity; her old friend Shirley is a teacher, jaded after decades of work in London’s funding-deprived schools; Carole, one of Shirley’s former students, is a successful investment banker; Carole’s mother Bummi works as a cleaner and worries about her daughter’s lack of rootedness despite her obvious achievements. From a nonbinary social media influencer to a 93-year-old woman living on a farm in Northern England, these unforgettable characters also intersect in shared aspects of their identities, from age to race to sexuality to class.

Sparklingly witty and filled with emotion, centering voices we often see othered, and written in an innovative fast-moving form that borrows technique from poetry, Girl, Woman, Other is a polyphonic and richly textured social novel that shows a side of Britain we rarely see, one that reminds us of all that connects us to our neighbors, even in times when we are encouraged to be split apart.

I loved it and want everyone to read this lost literary treasure.' Bernardine Evaristo
'Maud Martha finds beauty in the brutal formative moments that make us. It is one of my favorite depictions of how a woman comes to trust her eyes.' Raven Leilani
'The quotidian rises to an exquisite portraiture of black womanhood in the hands of one of America's most foundational writers.' Claudia Rankine
'Maud Martha reveals the poetry, power, and splendor of an ordinary life.' Tayari Jones
'Incredible ... She is a quietly radical seer, she is literature itself, a person in the world. It's a rare kind of perfect!' Max Porter
What, what , am I to do with all of this life?
Maud Martha Brown is a little girl growing up on the South Side of 1940s Chicago. Amidst the crumbling taverns and overgrown yards, she dreams: of New York, romance, her future. She admires dandelions, learns to drink coffee, falls in love, decorates her kitchenette, visits the Jungly Hovel, guts a chicken, buys hats, gives birth. But her lighter-skinned husband has dreams too: of the Foxy Cats Club, other women, war. And the 'scraps of baffled hate' - a certain word from a saleswoman; that visit to the cinema; the cruelty of a department store Santa Claus- are always there .
Written in 1953 but never published in Britain, Maud Martha is a poetic collage of happenings that forms an extraordinary portrait of an ordinary life: one lived with wisdom, humour, protest, rage, dignity, and joy.

Bernardine Evaristo is the winner of the 2019 Booker Prize for Girl, Woman, Other, and the first Black woman and first Black British person to receive this honor. There is huge international enthusiasm surrounding Manifesto, her first book since the Booker win, a bold work of memoir, criticism, and activism.

Grove’s edition of Girl, Woman, Other was a national bestseller and has sold 250,000 copies across all formats. It has been one of the most talked-about novels of recent years, and named one of Barack Obama’s favorite books of 2019, as well as Roxane Gay’s favorite book of the year. It landed on a bevy of “best of” lists, including that of the New Yorker, the Washington Post, NPR, and many others.

Manifesto offers Evaristo’s unique story of monumental success after decades of struggle for recognition. It is a hopeful and inspirational story of perseverance that will resonate with all generations of creative people, and especially those who have seen their stories go disregarded as marginal in mainstream channels. Building on a long tradition of radical Black women writers, from Audre Lorde to Nikki Giovanni to Roxane Gay, in Manifesto Evaristo combines equal parts personal memoir, bold and incisive criticism, and hands-on manual, creating a vital and accessible tool for anyone encountering stumbling blocks in their own work.

In the past years, Evaristo’s star has risen astronomically in the UK and in the United States. She was named Author of the Year by the British Book Awards in 2020 and elected as an International Honorary Fellow to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2021 and has become an important advocate for changes in the publishing industry.

We have major expectations for Manifesto, coming off the many successes of Girl, Woman, Other. We expect major review attention and profiles, as well as television and radio interest. We are also in early discussions surrounding a stateside tour in early 2022.

Evaristo is constantly in-demand for op-eds and other short-form writing at major outlets, including the New York Times and the Washington Post, and she is frequently asked to comment for television programs including Trevor Noah’s Daily Show and CNN.

We will send early copies to many of her countless vocal fans, including Marlon James, Rumaan Alam, Tom Stoppard, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Natalie Portman. We will also try our best to get copies to President Obama and Michelle Obama, as well as to Oprah.

Girl, Woman, Other was hugely championed by booksellers at indie bookstores, and remained on the ABA regional bestseller lists for much of 2020. We will do aggressive outreach for an Indie Next Pick for Manifesto.

We also had tremendous success with a special edition at Target, where Girl, Woman, Other was chosen for the Target Diverse Book Club. It sold over 10,000 copies, with 5,000 copies specially signed by Evaristo.

A television adaptation of Girl, Woman, Other is in the works, with rights acquired by Potboiler Television, whose previous literary adaptations include Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah, starring Lupita Nyong’o.

Identit?t in Bernardine Evaristos 'Lara'【電子書籍】[ Daniel Schroeder ]

Booker Prize 2019
Bernardine Evaristo

What is the experience of Black men in Britain today? Never has the conversation about racism and inclusion been more important; there is no better time to explore this question and give Black British men a platform to answer it. SAFE: 20 Ways to be a Black Man in Britain Today is that platform. Including essays from top poets, writers, musicians, actors and journalists, this timely and accessible book is in equal parts a celebration, a protest, a call to arms, and a dismantling of the stereotypes surrounding being a Black man. What does it really mean to reclaim and hold space in the landscape of our society?

Where do Black men belong in school, in the media, in their own families, in the conversation about mental health, in the LGBTQ+ community, in grime music - and how can these voices inspire, educate and add to the dialogue of diversity already taking place? Bernardine's Shanghai Salon: The Story of the Doyenne of Old China【電子書籍】[ Susan Blumberg-Kason ]

Bernardine Szold Fritz arrived in Shanghai in 1929 to marry her fourth husband. Only thirty-three years old, she found herself in a time and place like no other. Political intrigue and scandal lurked on every street corner. Art Deco cinemas showed the latest Hollywood flicks, while dancehall owners and jazz musicians turned Shanghai into Asia’s top nightlife destination.

Yet from the night of their wedding, Bernardine’s new husband did not live up to his promises. Instead of feeling sorry for herself or leaving Shanghai, Bernardine decided to make a place for herself. Like other Jewish women before her, she started a salon in her home, drawing famous names from the world of politics, the arts, and the intelligentsia. She introduced Emily Hahn, the charismatic opium-smoking writer for The New Yorker, to the flamboyant hotelier Sir Victor Sassoon and legendary poet Sinmay Zau. And when Hollywood stars Anna May Wong, Charlie Chaplin, and Claudette Colbert passed through Shanghai, Bernardine organized gatherings to introduce them to their Shanghai contemporaries.

When Bernardine’s salon could not accommodate all who wanted to attend, she founded the International Arts Theater to produce avant-garde plays, ballets, lectures, and visual arts exhibits, often pushing audiences beyond their comfort zones. As civil war brewed and World War II soon followed, Bernardine’s devotion to the arts and the people of Shanghai brought joy to the city just before it would change forever.

Saint Bernardine of Siena【電子書籍】[ Penny Lord ]

Our love story with St. Bernardine or San Bernardino, as we have known and loved him, began a long time ago - about the time we got to know St. Catherine of Siena and the Miracle of the Eucharist of Siena. For, you see, right adjacent to the Basilica of St. Francis is the Oratory of St. Bernardine. Each time, we would go to visit the Miracle of the Eucharist of Siena, we would see the sign of the Oratory; but along with it, the dreaded sign - the Oratory was being restored! Finally, one day, the door was open! and so we went in and took pictures. You could see the restoration had not been completed, if even started. That was over twenty years ago. But God has patience with us, and here we are twenty-three books later writing about our dear Saint Bernardine.

Three Pseudo-Bernardine Works【

During the "Silver Age" of the Cistercians (the late twelfth and thirteenth centuries), pseudepigraphical compositions bearing the name Bernard flourished. Important for the history of monasticism and, more broadly, of Christian spiritual formation and practice, these little-studied writings interpret, appropriate, transform, and apply Saint Bernard of Clairvaux's authentic works, transmitting them to new audiences.

Under the direction of Ann Astell and Joseph Wawrykow, with the assistance of Thomas Clemmons, a talented team of young scholars from the University of Notre Dame (the Catena Scholarium) offers here a complete translation of three of these Pseudo-Bernardine essays, providing notes that identify sources, clarify allusions, highlight rhetorical strategies, and demonstrate overall a fascinating, intertextual complexity. The Bernard who emerges from these texts speaks with many voices to herald a living, Bernardine tradition.

By 2020 it was over 20%. The Complete Works Poetry ? an initiative spearheaded by Booker Prize winner Bernardine Evaristo ? played a significant role in this change. Supporting 30 poets over a twelve-year period, The Complete Works produced an unprecedented number of prizewinners, including the Forward Prizes, T.S. Eliot Prize, Ted Hughes Award, Somerset Maugham Award, Dylan Thomas Prize, Rathbones Folio Prize and Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award. TCW Fellows have also gone on to judge every major poetry award, and to take on significant roles in academia and translation, publishing over 40 collections. The Complete Works has become the most successful collective ever formed in British poetry.

Mapping the Future is not just a magnificent anthology of some of the best UK poets, it is also an exploration on how poetry in Britain has become much more inclusive over the past 15 years: what has been won, and what is still being fought for. As well as poetry, the anthology also includes fierce essays re-drawing the map of British poetry by 10 of the 30 poets, touching on the most significant topics of our time. This anthology offers a timely insight into British poetry and how the voice of the ‘other’ continues to take centre-stage in pivotal times.

Mapping the Future is edited by poet Karen McCarthy Woolf, editor of the second two Ten anthologies in The Complete Works series, with Dr Nathalie Teitler, director of The Complete Works, with a foreword by Bernardine Evaristo.

But when her son Ian turns up on her doostep with the unexpected consequence of a brief fling, she feels she has no choice but to take the baby into her life. Cephas's arrival is the latest of many challenges Cecilia has to face. There is the matter of her cancer, for a start, an illness shared with her novelist friend Helen. Then there is Helen herself, whose observations of Cecilia's family life reveal a somewhat ambivalent attitude to motherhood. Meanwhile Tim, Cecilia's husband, is taking self-effacement to extremes, and Ian, unless he gets on with it, will throw away his best chance at happiness.
Cecilia, however, does not have to manage alone. In a convent in Hastings sits Sister Diana Clegg who holds the ties that bind everyone not only to each other, but to strangers as yet unmet. As events unfold, and as the truth about Cephas is revealed, we are invited to look closely at madness, guilt, mortal dread and the gift of resilience.
