Bluestockings Now! The Evolution of a Social Role【

Bringing together top specialists in the field, this edited volume challenges the theory that the eighteenth-century British intellectual women known as the Bluestockings were an isolated phenomenon spanning the period from the 1750s through the 1790s. On the contrary, the contributors suggest, the Bluestockings can be conceptualized as belonging to a chain of interconnected networks, taking their origin at a threshold moment in print media and communications development and extending into the present. The collection begins with a definition of the Bluestockings as a social role rather than a fixed group, a movement rather than a static phenomenon, an evolving dynamic reaching into our late-modern era. Essays include a rare transcript of a Bluestocking conversation; new, previously unknown Bluestockings brought to light for the first time; and descriptions of Bluestocking activity in the realms of natural history, arts and crafts, theatre, industry, travel, and international connections. The concluding essay argues that the Blues reimagined and practiced women’s work in ways that adapted to and altered the course of modernity, decisively putting a female imprint on economic, social, and cultural modernization. Demonstrating how the role of the Bluestocking has evolved through different historical configurations yet has structurally remained the same, the collection traces the influence of the Blues on the Romantic Period through the nineteenth century and proposes the reinvention of Bluestocking practice in the present.

College Girls Bluestockings, Sex Kittens, and Co-eds, Then and Now【電子書籍】[ Lynn Peril ]

The author of Pink Think takes on a twentieth-century icon: the college girl.

A geek who wears glasses? Or a sex kitten in a teddy? This is the dual vision of the college girl, the unique American archetype born when the age-old conflict over educating women was finally laid to rest. College was a place where women found self-esteem, and yet images in popular culture reflected a lingering distrust of the educated woman. Thus such lofty cultural expressions as Sex Kittens Go to College (1960) and a raft of naughty pictorials in men’s magazines.

As in Pink Think, Lynn Peril combines women’s history and popular cultureーpeppered with delightful examples of femoribilia from the turn of the twentieth century through the 1970sーin an intelligent and witty study of the college girl, the first woman to take that socially controversial step toward educational equity.

The incredible story of the fight for female education in Britain

In 1869, when five women enrolled at university for the first time in British history, the average female brain was thought to be 150 grams lighter than a man's. When the Cambridge Senate held a vote on whether women students should be allowed official membership of the university, there was a full-scale riot. Despite the prejudice and the terrible sacrifices they faced, women from all backgrounds persevered and paved the way for the generations who have followed them since.

Bluestockings tells an inspiring story - of defiance and determination, of colourful eccentricity and at times heartbreaking loneliness, as well as of passionate friendships, midnight cocoa-parties and glorious self-discovery.

'Social history of the best kind' Sunday Times

'Modern girls need reminding of the long battle, and Jane Robinson's fine book does just that, charting the lives and struggles of campaigners' Mail on Sunday

Bluestockings Displayed Portraiture, Performance and Patronage, 1730?1830【

The conversation parties of the bluestockings, held to debate contemporary ideas in eighteenth-century Britain, were vital in encouraging female artistic achievement. The bluestockings promoted links between learning and virtue in the public imagination, inventing a new kind of informal sociability that combined the life of the senses with that of the mind. This collection of essays, by leading scholars in the fields of literature, history and art history, provides an interdisciplinary treatment of bluestocking culture in eighteenth-century Britain. It is the first academic volume to concentrate on the rich visual and material culture that surrounded and supported the bluestocking project, from formal portraits and sculptures to commercially reproduced prints. By the early twentieth century, the term 'bluestocking' came to signify a dull and dowdy intellectual woman, but the original bluestockings inhabited a world in which brilliance was valued at every level and women were encouraged to shine and even dazzle.

Gregory Cain, The Earl of Shelby doesn't believe in love, more specifically he doesn't believe in it for himself. It's perfectly fine for other people. Scandalous behavior and roguish deeds are in his skill set and he doesn't mind flaunting both. He doesn't get involved with innocents or marriage minded ladies. So when Lady Kaitlin Evans asks him for a kiss he has no choice but to refuse her. Not only is she close to his sister, she's his mentor's niece. She's off limits. So why does he suddenly find her fascinating and kissing her is the one thing he desires more than anything...

Lady Kaitlin Evans is an orphan. She lost both of her parents at a young age and went to live with her uncle. She doesn't do well in social gatherings and would much rather become lost in a good book or learn something new. Because of her social awkwardness she's become one of the premier wallflowers...for three straight seasons. She's ready to give up and prepare for spinsterhood. It's less heartbreaking and she can read as much as she wants to without interruption. There is only one thing she wants before she retires from society forever--a kiss from the Earl of Shelby. The scoundrel refuses her though and instead offers to help her find a husband.

Kaitlin and Gregory make an agreement, but both have ulterior motives. As they go forward it soon becomes obvious that nothing is going to work as they planned and passion is unleashed in ways neither would have imagined.

This Element proposes to relate the eighteenth-century world of travel and travel writing with the bluestocking salon. It locates eminent British travellers and explorers in the female-presided intellectual space and examines their multifaceted interaction with the bluestockings between 1760 and 1799. The study shows how the bluestockings acquired knowledge of the world through reading, discussing, writing and collecting travel accounts. It explores the 'social life' of manuscript and printed travel texts in the circle, their popularity and impact on the bluestockings. Anne-Marie Fauques de Vaucluse, a Tiger among the Bluestockings【電子書籍】[ Julia Gasper ]

Anne-Marie Fauques de Vaucluse fled from France to England in 1756 to avoid being sent to the Bastille for writing a book denouncing the tyranny of Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour. When the book was printed the French government tried to get it suppressed and the author arrested, but failed. Author of twenty books in both French and English, she was an eccentric, brilliant, and wayward woman who escaped from a convent in her youth and had numerous love-affairs, some disastrous. Novelist, political satirist, poet, feminist and animal rights advocate, she was determined to play a role in the Enlightenment intellectual scene and succeeded despite all the odds. Fauques was at one time the mistress of the Young Pretender and was a friend of some of the most scandal-prone figures of the time, including John Cleland, Elizabeth Craven and William Beckford. This biography unravels the confusion surrounding the identity of a woman who was an unconventional intellectual, criminal, lunatic and genius. The Bluestockings A History of the First Women's Movement【電子書籍】[ Susannah Gibson ]

**One of The New Yorker’s Best Books of the Year

“Intimate social history.” ーNew York Times Book Review

An illuminating group portrait of the eighteenth-century women who dared to imagine an active life for themselves in both mind and spirit.**

In England in the 1700s, a woman who was an intellectual, spoke out, or wrote professionally was considered unnatural. After all, as the wisdom of the era dictated, a clever womanーif there were such a thingーwould never make a good wife. But a circle of women called the Bluestockings did something extraordinary: coming together in glittering salons to discuss and debate as intellectual equals with men, they fought for women to be educated and to have a public role in society.

In this intimate and revelatory history, Susannah Gibson delves into the lives of these pioneering women. Elizabeth Montagu established one of the most famous salons of the Bluestocking movement, with everyone from royalty to revolutionaries clamoring for an invitation to attend. Her younger sister, Sarah Scott, imagined a female-run society and created a women’s commune. Meanwhile, Hester Thrale, who also had a salon, saved her husband’s brewery from bankruptcy and, after being widowed, married a man she lovedーItalian, Catholic, and not of her social class. Other women made a name for themselves through their publications, including Catharine Macaulay, author of an eight-volume history of England, and Frances Burney, author of the audacious novel Evelina.

In elegant prose, Gibson reveals the close and complicated relationships between these women, how they supported and admired each other, and how they sometimes judged and exploited one another. Some rebelled quietly, while others defied propriety with adventurous and scandalous lives. With moving stories and keen insight, The Bluestockings uncovers how a group of remarkable women slowly built up an eviscerating critique of their male-dominated world that society was not yet ready to hear.

When he mistakes you for a chambermaid…

-Grumpy/Sunshine

-Fake Betrothal

-Secret Past

The Marquess has something this teacher wants, and, as luck would have it, she has something he needs.

Beatrice Wolcott is desperate to keep her past a secret. She can't afford to make the same mistake other teachers have madeーmistakes that have forced them to marry! So when the Marquess asks Beatrice to pose as his temporary fianc?e, she would have refused… Until he offered to discover the identity of whoever has been vandalizing the school. How could she not agree to the bargain when the safety of the students is at stake?

In conceding, however, she insists all proprietary be upheld! Chaperone, check. Separate coaches, check. Signed contract, double check.

All this prim teacher lacks is a little self-controlーor rather, quite a lot of self-controlーas she's having increasing difficulties keeping her hands off this detective/marquess.

Lord Sexton, Chief investigator and Interim Director of the Society for the Advancement of Ingenuity in London, needs to address one last detail to convince the board to make his position a permanent one: A wife.

In his mind, a temporary betrothed will be just as effective.

And Miss Beatrice Wolcott is perfect for the job! As an intelligent woman, she'll understand the practicality of his offer, not yearn for romantic gestures, and most importantly, never expect him to make her his marchioness.

The charade works out perfectly until they surrender to the steamy attraction between them. And to complicate matters, the woman Sexton is inexplicably falling for, seems to be keeping a few secrets of her own. Is his make-believe betrothed as uncomplicated as he'd initially believed, or is she perhaps, the greatest mystery of all?

Don't miss out on any of these big-hearted stories featuring teachers and students from Miss Primm's Secret School for Budding Bluestockingsーan academy where English Misses go to learn how to fit into society, but instead learn how to make their place in the world.
