In prehistoric ages the valley of the Thames formed the bed of an estuary or arm of the sea, whose waters flowed over the low lands of Essex, and whose waves dashed against the sloping uplands of Middlesex and Surrey, on whose summits now stand the Crystal and Alexandra Palaces. In process of time, by the deposition of silt brought down from the west, and of sand brought up by the flow of the tide, the estuary was reduced to a river, afterwards still further reduced in width by the embankments made by the Romans along the coast of Essex; and the land intervening between the then and the former shores became a succession of fens and morasses, some of which remained to comparatively modern times, and have their localities indicated by such names as Moorfields, Fenchurch, Marsh-gate, Lambeth, etc. Amongst these morasses were oases of high and firm land; and beyond, spreading up and over the slopes of the uplands, there grew a dense forest, the home of wolves, boars, and other wild animals. Upon one of these spots of dry land, at the time of the invasion of C?sar, might be seen a village of wattled or mud-built and thatched huts, inhabited by the Celtic aborigines, with cattle and hogs feeding in the midst, a few patches of cultivated land, and beyond, the forest. This was the nucleus of the mighty London of the present, and is supposed to have occupied a space of some quarter of a mile along the river shore, with Dowgate for its centre, and stretching northward as far as Cheapside. In all probability it would be surrounded by earthworks, ditches, and stockades, for the purpose of defence, and would otherwise be protected by the broad stream of the Thames, and by the Fleet river on the west, and Walbrook on the east. When the Romans completed the subjugation of the southern part of Britain and began to make settlements, their practical sagacity at once perceived the eligibility of this spot as a centre of commerce; and in a short time it put on the appearance of a Roman city, and gradually became adorned with residential houses after the Roman fashionーwhose tesselated pavements and other decorations are still often exhumedーwith marts of commerce, temples of the gods, basilic?, baths, amphitheatres, and other architectural appliances of an important city. At what period the Romans substituted a wall of defence in place of the old earthworks is uncertain, but previous to its construction they appeared to have erected two forts on the north bank of the Thamesーone at the eastern extremity of the City, where the tower now stands; the other at the western end, where the Fleet fell into the Thames. That it was an open town, or very imperfectly defended, in the middle of the first century, is evidenced by the facility with which Queen Boadicea, temp. Nero, entered it with her army, slaughtered the inhabitants, and most probably burnt it, as the charred remains of a great conflagration have been frequently found in making deep excavations. Henry of Huntingdon, and some other of the old chroniclers, tell us that it was first walled by Constantine the Great, at the request of his mother Helena, and that the materials he made use of were hewn stone and British bricks, and that it was in compass about three miles. Camden seems to credit this statement, from the fact that coins of the Empress Helena have been found under the wall, but as these might have been in circulation long after her death, it only goes to prove that the wall was not built before her era. Constantine died in the year 337, and we find some twenty-five years afterwards London was entered and pillaged, and the inhabitants reduced to a state of great misery, by a combined army of Picts, Scots, Saxons, and Franks, which would scarcely have been possible if it had been walled, and defended by the disciplined soldiers of the empire.

Sunday Cosmopolitans Sunday Cosmopolitans, Intimate Friends & Brilliant Minds from Bygone New York【電子書籍】[ Lynn Clark Dorr ]

Intimate Friends & Brilliant Minds from Bygone New York On Sunday evenings from 1850 to 1871, the poets Alice and Phoebe Cary host New Yorks choicest, most cosmopolitan literary salon--the first American bluestocking of its kind. The character-driven plot follows the lives of the energetic sisters in their rise to success. It is a portrait of intellectual, independent women, i.e. Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Mary Louise Booth, Fanny Fern and others, who challenge laws and mindsets, breaking the glass ceiling of their day. Their intimate story parallels the historic deeds and events involving not only the women, but their extraordinary group of close men friends, including Horace Greeley, P.T. Barnum, Bayard Taylor, and John Greenleaf Whittier. Horace Greeley called Phoebe the wittiest woman in America, and Edgar Allan Poe described Alices poem, Pictures of Memory, one of the most musically perfect lyrics in the English language. Before, during, and after the Civil War, abolition, suffrage, religion, politics, and social reform are heated issues. There is adventure, discovery, and financial chaos. In the ambiance of Alice and Phoebes cozy home on 20th Street, philosophy, politics, and literature mingle with fortune, rank, and wit. America comes into its own in literature and New York takes on world prominence.

Kick snow from your shoes and step into the warmth of the old Hoosier high school basketball gym, where farmers in overalls line the court and students heckle referees from planks above the bleachers. Revisit a unique era when nearly every town had a high school and its own basketball team. The gyms featured here no longer host high school games, but once they were home to the Ladoga Canners, the Mecca Arabs, the Roll Red Rollers, the Arlington Purple Breezes, the Warren Lightning Five and dozens more. Now they are elementary schools, community centers, fire stations, churches. Some are homes. Sadly, others are wasting away. But once again, the ball thuds in these gyms. The screams reverberate. The whistles blow. Bygone Scotland - Historical and Social【電子書籍】[ David Maxwell ]

For a country of comparatively small extent, and with a large proportion of its soil in moor and mountain, histories of Scotland have been numerous and well-nigh exhaustive. The present work is not a chronicle of events in order and detail, but a series of pictures from the earlier history, expanding into fuller narratives of the more striking events in later times. And it includes portions of contemporaneous English history; for the history of Scotland can only be fully understood through that of its larger and more powerful neighbour. The growth of a people out of semi-barbarism and tribal diversity, to civilization and national autonomy, is ever an interesting study. This growth in Scotland included many elements. The Roman occupation of Southern Britain banded together for defence and aggression the northern tribes. For centuries after the Roman evacuation the old British race held the south-western shires, up to the Clyde; the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria extended to the Frith of Forth; there were Norse settlements on the eastern coast, in Orkney, and the Hebrides. Of the various races out of which the Scottish nation was formed, the Picts were the most numerous; but the Scotsーa kindred race, wanderers from Irelandーwere the more active and aggressiveーcame to assume the general government, and gave their name to the whole country north of the Solway and the Tweed. It is interesting to trace how, in unsettled times, the burghs developed into little, distinct communities, largely self-governed. And the religious element in Scotland has been a powerful factor in shaping the character of the people and of the national institutions; the conflict of the Covenant was the epic in Scottish history. The rebellion of 1745, as the last specially Scottish incident in British history, is properly the closing chapter in Bygone Scotland. D. M. Hull Literary Club, St. Andrew's Day, 1893.

Marmaduke Merry: A Tale of Naval Adventures in Bygone Days【電子書籍】[ William Henry Giles Kingston ]

I belong to the family of the Merrys of Leicestershire. Our chief characteristic was well suited to our patronymic. “Merry by name and merry by nature,” was a common saying among us. Indeed, a more good-natured, laughing, happy set of people it would be difficult to find. Right jovial was the rattle of tongues and the cachinnation which went forward whenever we were assembled together either at breakfast or dinner or supper; our father and mother setting us the example, so that we began the day with a hearty laugh, and finished it with a heartier. “Laugh and grow fat” is an apothegm which all people cannot follow, but our mother did in the most satisfactory manner. Her skin was fair and most thoroughly comfortably filled out; her hair was light, and her contented spirit beamed out from a pair of large laughing blue eyes, so that it was a pleasure to look at her as she sat at the head of the table, serving out the viands to her hungry progeny. Our sisters were very like her, and came fairly under the denomination of jolly girls; and thoroughly jolly they were;ーnone of them ever had a headache or a toothache, or any other ache that I know of. Our father was a good specimen of a thorough English country gentleman; he was thorough in everything, honest-faced, stout, and hearty, not over-refined, perhaps, but yet gentle in all his thoughts and acts; a hater of a lie and every thing dishonourable, hospitable and generous to the utmost of his means; a protector of the poor and helpless, and a friend to all his neighbours. Yes, and I may say more, both he and my mother were humble, sincere Christians, and made the law of the Bible their rule of life. He told a good story and laughed at it himself, and delighted to see our mother and us laugh at it also. Had he been bred a lawyer, and lived in London, he would have been looked upon as a first-rate wit; but I am certain that he was much happier with the lot awarded to him. He had a good estate; his tenants paid their rents regularly; and he had few or no cares to disturb his digestion or to keep him awake at night; and I am very certain that he would far rather have had us to hear his jokes, and laugh at them with him, than all the wits London ever produced. He delighted in joining in all our sports, either of the field or flood, and we always looked forward to certain amusement when he was able to accompany us. He was our companion and friend; we had no secrets from him,ーwhy should we? He was always our best adviser, and if we got into scrapes, which one or the other of us was not unfrequently doing, we were very certain that no one could extricate us as well as he could. I don’t mean to say that he forgot the proverb, “Spare the rod, spoil the child;” or that we were such pieces of perfection that we did not deserve punishment; but we had sense enough to see that he punished us for our good: he did it calmly, never angrily, and without any unnecessarily severe remark, and we certainly did not love him the less for the sharpest flogging he ever gave us. Directly afterwards, he would meet the culprit in his usual frank, hearty way, and seem to forget all about the matter.

Memories of a Bygone Age Qajar Persia and Imperial Russia 1853-1902【電子書籍】[ Prince Arfa ]

Set against the backdrop of Iran’s struggle against the rising powers of Russia and Britain, the memoirs of Mirza Riza Khan Arfa’-ed-Dowlehーotherwise known as Prince Arfa (1853?1902)ーare packed with picaresque adventures as the prince tells the story of his rise from humble provincial beginnings to the heights of the Iranian state. With this translation, his incredible story is brought to life for the first time in English.

Prince Arfa writes with arresting wit about the deadly intrigues of the Qajar court. Lamentingly, but resolutely, he chronicles the decline of Iran from a once great empire to an almost bankrupt, lawless state, in which social unrest is channelled and exploited by the clergy. He describes the complex interactions between Iran and Europe, including an account of Naser-od-Din Shah’s profligate visits to Britain and France; the splendor and eccentricities of the doomed Tsar Nicholas II’s court; the Tsar’s omen-laden coronation; and his own favor with the Tsarina, who would grant him concessions on matters of vital importance to his country. The result is a memoir of extraordinary political intrigue.

The Essential Sosonko Collected Portraits and Tales of a Bygone Chess Era【電子書籍】[ Genna Sosonko ]

Genna Sosonko is widely acclaimed as the most prominent chronicler of a unique era in chess history. In the Soviet Union chess was developed into an ideological weapon that was actively promoted by the country’s leadership during the Cold War. Starting with Mikhail Botvinnik, their best chess players grew into symbols of socialist excellence. Sosonko writes from a privileged dual perspective, combining an insider’s nostalgia with the detachment of a critical observer. He grew up with legendary champions such as Mikhail Tal and Viktor Korchnoi and spent countless hours with most of the other greats and lesser chess mortals he portrays.

Sosonko was born in Leningrad, where he lived for 29 years and worked as a chess coach. After emigrating to the Netherlands, he became a world-class chess grandmaster, participating in the strongest competitions around the globe. In the late 1980s he began to write about the champions he knew and their remarkable lives in New In Chess Magazine. First, he wrote primarily about Soviet players and personalities, and later, he also began to portray other chess celebrities with whom he had crossed paths. They all vividly come to life as the reader is transported to their time and world. Once you’ve read Sosonko, you will feel you know Capablanca, Max Euwe and Tony Miles. And you will never forget Sergey Nikolaev.

This monumental book is a collection of the portraits and profiles Genna Sosonko wrote for New in Chess magazine. The stories have been published in his books: Russian Silhouettes, The Reliable Past, Smart Chip From St. Petersburg and The World Champion I Knew. They are supplemented with further writings on legends such as David Bronstein, Garry Kasparov and Boris Spassky. They paint an enthralling and unforgettable picture of a largely vanished age and, indirectly, a portrait of one of the greatest writers on the world of chess. Garry Kasparov wrote the Foreword.

Book 3. Forgotten Stories of Bygone Days【電子書籍】[ Elena Kryuchkova ]

Excerpt from the book:
...Turning around, Sumire saw a female figure detach from the trunk of the plum tree. And before her appeared a young girl with long hair and in a scarlet outfit.
“Lady, please don't be afraid of me,” she said. “I am the spirit of the plum tree that grows by this bridge. My name is Umeko. The oni Kiseki, whose name you guessed, caused trouble not only to me, but also to the local spirits of stones and the spirit of the river. We have never wished harm to people, and every time we were very worried, afraid to become witnesses of bloodshed. Therefore, I want to thank you.”
“Oh, there's no need,” Sumire said modestly.
“You were not at all surprised to meet Kiseki and me,” smiled Umeko. “Have you encountered spirits and demons before?”
“Once, I had to be a witness to a mystical event,” she replied.
“Oh, I see!” exclaimed the plum spirit. “This explains a lot. You are an amazing person! As a token of my gratitude, let me show you the mirror that knows the past.”
“The mirror that shows the past?” Sumire asked in surprise.
“Yes,” Umeko nodded. A small bronze mirror appeared in her hands, painted with an intricate color pattern around the edges. “If you look into it, you can see whatever you want. Whether it is an event of ancient times, the life of a person or a spirit. The only thing that the mirror does not show is the fate of objects.”
***
...It was a sultry summer day. There was not the slightest movement of wind in the air.
The servants and members of the Heavenly Clan were suffering from the heat. In the afternoon the sky began to take on a leaden hue as a heavy thunderstorm was approaching.
Amaterasu spent time in the shade of a spreading tree. Her maids, Miyu and Mayu, were diligently fanning their Lady with large fans.
Over the past two years, Miyu has grown up and gradually turned into an attractive young lady. Mayu entered the service of the deities a little later than her friend. She was a year younger than Miyu, but that didn't stop the girls from making friends.
“There will probably be a strong thunderstorm in the evening...” Amaterasu said lazily.
“Yes, my Lady, it's always very stuffy before a thunderstorm,” Mayu agreed with her.
“And I'm scared to death of lightning...” confessed Miyu.
“You shouldn't be afraid of them! They are far in the sky! And we serve the deities, so everything will be all right,” her friend reasoned.
She knew perfectly well: in a thunderstorm one should not be near water and one should not hide under a tree. Otherwise, the thunder spirits will get angry and incinerate you with a lightning bolt.
“I had a bad dream today,” Miyu ignored her friend. “I saw that a huge fireball flew into Ashihara and engulfed Lady Izanami in flames...”
***
Nine thousand years ago...
It was a wonderful summer day. This year the summer turned out to be extremely successful: not cold, but not hot either. It rained just the right amount.
The Court diviners of the Heavenly River Clan unanimously called this an auspicious sign. The reason for which was the ascension to the throne of the new ruler Tei.
The Heavenly Clan arrived on Earth over a thousand years ago, from a distant place beyond the Heavenly River. They settled on the archipelago, having founded the capital on the island of Honshu, but after a couple of centuries they finally lost touch with their distant ancestral home.
The course of time did not spare anyone, sweeping away everything in its path. Therefore, over the millennium, the Heavenly Clan had lost most of their knowledge and technology. The members of the clan in many ways became like ordinary mortal people. They also lost their amazing longevity, because they gradually mixed with mortal earthlings from local tribes. But the members of the Heavenly Clan still kept records on timeless paper, diligently guarding the secret of its manufacture...

Curious Punishments of Bygone Days【電子書籍】[ Alice Morse Earle ]

'Curious Punishments of Bygone Days' is a history book published written by Alice Morse Earle. The subject of the chapters is various archaic punishments. Morse seems to make a distinction between stocks for the feet, in the Stocks chapter, and stocks for the head, described in the Pillory article- which itself clashes with the modern-day understanding of a pillory as a whipping post.

New York In Bygone Days - Its Story, Streets And Landmarks【電子書籍】[ Rufus Rockwell Wilson ]

Verily this Island of Manhattan is exposed to the danger of being snowed under by the showers of works scattered broadcast by her chroniclers, her eulogists, and her critics. Plentiful has been the crop of local commentaries. "New York in bygone days" is a fair type of one species of these city histories. In the main it is composed of gleanings from more ponderous and elaborate works. Mr. Wilson devotes the first volume to the civic development of the city from the first settlements around the fort to the end of the Civil War. The story is fairly well told, without a single touch of originality. Nor is there evidence that the values of the secondary sources were weighed. Extracts are given from Mrs. Lamb, who certainly permitted her pen to wander into pleasant details where verification is impossible. The excuse for being of this "New York" is that the whole story is thrown together and the reader can follow the growth of modern Gotham from its Dutch origins. In the second volume the localities are described. Still some of the personal touches tacked on to places are fresh, a, for instance, a letter from Margaret Fuller when she was the guest of Horace Greeley. Of her host she says, "His abilities in his own way are great. He believes in mine to a surprising extent. We are true friends," ー a sequence delightfully suggestive of a select mutual - admiration society. This edition contains both original volumes.
