Things Fall Apart A Novel【電子書籍】[ Chinua Achebe ]

**“A true classic of world literature . . . A masterpiece that has inspired generations of writers in Nigeria, across Africa, and around the world.” ーBarack Obama

“African literature is incomplete and unthinkable without the works of Chinua Achebe.” ーToni Morrison

Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read**

Things Fall Apart is the first of three novels in Chinua Achebe's critically acclaimed African Trilogy. It is a classic narrative about Africa's cataclysmic encounter with Europe as it establishes a colonial presence on the continent. Told through the fictional experiences of Okonkwo, a wealthy and fearless Igbo warrior of Umuofia in the late 1800s, Things Fall Apart explores one man's futile resistance to the devaluing of his Igbo traditions by British political andreligious forces and his despair as his community capitulates to the powerful new order.

With more than 20 million copies sold and translated into fifty-seven languages, Things Fall Apart provides one of the most illuminating and permanent monuments to African experience. Achebe does not only capture life in a pre-colonial African village, he conveys the tragedy of the loss of that world while broadening our understanding of our contemporary realities.

The African Trilogy Things Fall Apart; Arrow of God; No Longer at Ease【電子書籍】[ Chinua Achebe ]

Chinua Achebe is considered the father of modern African literature, the writer who "opened the magic casements of African fiction." The African Trilogy--comprised of Things Fall Apart, Arrow of God, and No Longer at Ease--is his magnum opus. In these masterly novels, Achebe brilliantly imagines the lives of three generations of an African community as their world is upended by the forces of colonialism from the first arrival of the British to the waning days of empire.

The trilogy opens with the groundbreaking Things Fall Apart, the tale of Okonkwo, a hero in his village, whose clashes with missionaries--coupled with his own tragic pride--lead to his fall from grace. Arrow of God takes up the ongoing conflict between continuity and change as Ezeulu, the headstrong chief priest, finds his authority is under threat from rivals and colonial functionaries. But he believes himself to be untouchable and is determined to lead his people, even if it is towards their own destruction. Finally, in No Longer at Ease, Okonkwo's grandson, educated in England, returns to a civil-service job in Lagos, only to see his morality erode as he clings to his membership in the ruling elite.

Drawing on the traditional Igbo tales of Achebe's youth, The African Trilogy is a literary landmark, a mythic and universal tale of modern Africa. As Toni Morrison wrote, "African literature is incomplete and unthinkable without the works of Chinua Achebe. For passion, intellect and crystalline prose, he is unsurpassed."

Love and Marriage in Africa in the Novels of Elechi Amadi, Buchi Emecheta and Chinua Achebe【電子書籍】[ Dr. Richa Jha ]

The theme of love and marriage in literature is perhaps as old as literature itself. Works of literature across borders and genres have worked around these twin themes to give us some of the most memorable tales, yet they appear quite neglected by the critics when making a study of African literature. The world of literary criticism has witnessed a newfound interest in the African continent, which had for a long time been suffering in ignominious darkness, yet the majority of critical study is still focused on postcolonial themes and human relationships have largely been ignored. The white man’s perception and portrayal of Africa as a land of savages, devoid of finer emotions, could be a major influence in this regard. This study strives to prove that the Africans have always had a rich history and culture of interpersonal relationships and the twin themes of love and marriage run across their literature, justifying their claim to being as capable of harboring finer emotions as any other civilization of the world. The novels under study in this research work present the importance of love in various aspects like the man-woman relationship, parent-child relationship and an individual’s love for his native land. Various types of matrimonial alliances, with the different aspects of an African marriage, such as settling of marriage, settlement and payment of the bride price, gender equations, polygamy, widow remarriage etc., have all been studied in the backdrop of the three novels taken under consideration. This research work, based on the novels of Elechi Amadi, Buchi Emecheta and Chinua Achebe, studies the representation of love and marriage in African literature as an important and recurrent theme that touches upon other aspects of the society like class division, human relationships, social beliefs, myths, superstition and most importantly, the gender perspectives.

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Duisburg-Essen, language: English, abstract: [...] Although there is quite a number of reasonable arguments for not welcoming Turkey to the European 'family', such as financial as well as political and ethical, the majority of Turkish people consider prejudices against Turks as the actual reason for their rejection: they are (culturally) too different and more than the half of the European citizens are against a Turkish membership in the EU. Instead, a 'privileged partnership' is being proposed by some conservative European governments (or opposing parties such as the German Christian Democratic party), instead of a full membership. I think 'full' needs to be emphasised here because it means a real and well-meant friendship, a step closer to becoming a family member one day rather than a mere political (or strategical) ally. Well, family implies that there are less differences, that one is almost alike. There are many European tenets as well as traditional views which hinder an honest dialogue since Europe has yet to rid itself of some of its dangerous ideas ('maleficent' fictions) which set the world ablaze in the 20th century. Neither Nigeria is honestly acknowledged, nor is (in the minds of many a European critic) Achebe's writing universal5, nor is Turkey's fourty-year old endeavour to become a full European member acceptable. There is, intellectually, a problem on the part of Europe to accept the idea of equality which Achebe has been persistently trying to point out both in his novels and in his essays (which is the same reason, I think, why Turkey is so hard done by): feeling of superiority. That is why Achebe's books lack the quality of universal European (or Western) books and is only applicable to Nigeria and likewise the reason for Turkey being a second-rate country. Both of these concepts reveal classical European ideas that will - in all probability - prove to be false during the course of the twenty-first century. In order to support my thesis, which I admit sounds far-fetched at first glance, I will refer to Chinua Achebe's accounts on colonial criticism and, wherever possible, compare them to the recent issue in European dealings with the Other, i.e. the Turk. I will later on focus on the novels 'Arrow of God' and 'A Man of the People', particularly on the aspect of religion in 'Arrow of God' and the post-colonial phenomena of Nigeria in 'A Man of the People'.

Uncommon Law of Learned Writing 2.0【電子書籍】[ Chinua Asuzu ]

As lawyers, we must not, in hot pursuit of common law, outrun common sense. The dread of that eventuality prompted this book. Uncommon Law of Learned Writing 2.0 promotes common sense in legal language. Plain language, which is commonsensical, broadens access to legal documents, thus democratizing the law.

If democracy is government of the people, by the people, and for the people, law is the language in which government interacts with the peopleーit’s the language of democracy. The people whose government speaks through law must understand what is said. No democratic society should brook legaleseーa dense, verbose dialect known only to lawyers.

What then should society do to redress the lawyer-induced obscurity? A Shakespearean character had an alarming proposal: “The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers.” Apparently, that proposal was not enthusiastically endorsed, which explains why we’re still here. A milder remedyーenrolling lawyers in language classesーhas been mooted, which explains why this book is in your hands.

Uncommon Law of Learned Writing 2.0 motivates lawyers to prefer plain language to the legalese and verbosity that have besmirched legal writing for centuries. This book is as sweeping and authoritative a treatment of its subject as you can find anywhere.

EUROCENTRISM AND COUNTERFACTUALIZATION IN TWO NOVELS OF AFRICA: A Study of Joyce Cary’s Mister Johnson and Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart【電子書籍】[ Victoria Oladiran ]

In the early 20th century, the progressively mechanized character of European culture was contrasted with the traditional farming, fishing and herding society being newly conquered and colonized by Europe such as America, most of Africa and later the pacific and Australia. Many European writers of this time construed the history of Europe as paradigmatic for the rest of the world. Other cultures were identified as having reached a stage through which Europe itself had already passed-primitive; hunter; gatherers; farming; early civilization; feudalism and modern liberal-capitalism. Only Europe was considered to have achieved the last stage.
The advancement of western education in Africa however ushered Africans into the realization that literature is a tool that builds the ideology, perception and believe system of the world about a people or culture. It therefore became imminent that the few educated Africans, as at that time, take the portrayal of Africa, by non-Africans, serious. This book analyzes two novels about Africa: Joyce Cary’s Mister Johnson and Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart showing the perception of Nigeria by a European (Joyce Cary) and how Chinua Achebe (a Nigerian) tries to refute these notions.
This book further highlighted how Africans, using literature as an arsenal, have been able to counter, re-write, and refute the Eurocentric view that Africa is culture-less, barbaric, uncivilized and backwards.

Arrow of God【電子書籍】[ Chinua Achebe ]

**"My favorite novel." ーChimamanda Ngozi Adichie

“A magical writerーone of the greatest of the twentieth century.” ーMargaret Atwood

“African literature is incomplete and unthinkable without the works of Chinua Achebe.” ーToni Morrison

The second novel in Chinua Achebe’s masterful African trilogy, following Things Fall Apart and preceding No Longer at Ease**

When Things Fall Apart ends, colonial rule has been introduced to Umuofia, and the character of the nation, its values, freedoms, religious and socio-political foundations have substantially and irrevocably been altered. Arrow of God, the second novel in Chinua Achebe’s The African Trilogy, moves the historical narrative forward. This time, the action revolves around Ezeulu, the headstrong chief priest of the god Ulu, which is worshipped by the six villages of Umuaro. The novel is a meditation on the nature, uses, and responsibility of power and leadership. Ezeulu finds that his authority is increasingly under threat from rivals within his nation and functionaries of the newly established British colonial government. Yet he sees himself as untouchable. He is forced, with tragic consequences, to reconcile conflicting impulses in his own natureーa need to serve the protecting deity of his Umuaro people; a desire to retain control over their religious observances; and a need to gain increased personal power by pushing his authority to the limits. He ultimately fails as he leads his people to their own destruction, and consequently, his personal tragedy arises. Arrow of God is an unforgettable portrayal of the loss of faith, and the downfall of a man in a society forever altered by colonialism.

Indigenous Identity in Witi Ihimaera's 'Whale Rider' and Chinua Achebe's Fiction【電子書籍】[ Annemarie Pabel ]

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Dusseldorf 'Heinrich Heine', language: English, abstract: In both Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart and Witi Ihimaera's The Whale Rider indigenous identity is a central topic. Yet, it is challenged by the advent of colonization or, in the latter case, by the fusion of ancient tradition and modernism. As such, the aim of this paper is to analyse the literary representation of indigeneity in these novels using Stuart Hall's dual definition in order to show how indigenous identity develops at the backdrop of colonization and what this means for the concept of identity in a postcolonial context. [...] Subsequently, attention will be drawn to the ways in which the individual is representative of indigenous identity and how this relates to the dynamics between community and individual. This part will contrast the idea of a stable self with a transformative one and thus also establish a connection to the succeeding analysis of diaspora identities in Things Fall Apart, which are based on constant progress. [...] The results will then provide the basis for a discussion of relocation and hybridity to subsequently contextualize them in the concept of diaspora identities and, more generally, postcolonialism. Although the focus of the analysis is on Things Fall Apart the background of the last chapter will be used as an occasion for a brief discussion of the second part of his trilogy, No Longer at Ease. After this, a similarly structured analysis of Witi Ihimaera's The Whale Rider will be pursued. Firstly, the literary representation of features of oral tradition and orality in general will be examined before attention is directed towards myth as a major constituent of Maori identity and its use in the novel.[...]To embed the representation of identity in the broader concept of postcolonialism, the novel will then be discussed in terms of rewriting. Nevertheless, the aim of this chapter will not be a comparative approach of the ancient pretext as a basis for the modern novel. How have Western influences and elements of globalization been interwoven in the narration? And how do these contribute to rewriting? The result will be drawn on to answer these questions of the significance of rewriting and relocating for the concept of cultural identity.[...] The purpose of this comparison is to clarify the major differences and similarities which is a prerequisite of the contextualization of the concept of identity in postcolonialism as will be done in the conclusion.

Chinua Achebe and the Politics of Narration Envisioning Language【電子書籍】[ Thomas Jay Lynn ]

This book examines vital intersections of narration, linguistic innovation, and political insight that distinguish Chinua Achebe’s fiction as well as his non-fiction commentaries. Each chapter focuses on a different aspect of these intersections: Achebe’s narrative response to Western authors who have written on Africa, his integration of Igbo folklore, the political implications of writing African literature in English, his use of Nigerian Pidgin, and the Nigerian Civil War. It also addresses the teaching of Achebe’s works. Achebe drew on diverse resources to offer searching psychological and political insights that contribute not only a decidedly African political viewpoint to the modern novel, but also a more inclusive narrative consciousness. Achebe’s adaptations of Igbo oral art are intrinsic to his writing’s political engagement because they assert the integrity and authority of the African voice in a global order defined by colonialism. This book reveals how his work has helpedto restructure a global vision of Africa.

Advocates will do well to keep in mind that in advocacy, persuasion is all that matters. This book teaches persuasive written advocacy.

As lawyers, we must not, in hot pursuit of common law, outrun common sense. The dread of that eventuality prompted this book. Learned Writing promotes common sense in legal language. Plain language, which is commonsensical, broadens access to legal documents, thus democratizing the law. If democracy is government of the people, by the people, and for the people, law is the language in which government interacts with the peopleーit is the language of democracy. The people whose government speaks through law must understand what is said. No democratic society should brook legalese, a dense, verbose dialect known only to lawyers. What then should society do to redress the lawyer-induced obscurity? A Shakespearean character had an alarming proposal: “The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers.” Apparently, that proposal was not enthusiastically endorsed, which explains why we’re still here. A milder remedyーenrolling lawyers in language classesーhas been muted, which explains why this book is in your hands. Learned Writing motivates lawyers to prefer plain language to the legalese and verbosity that have besmirched legal writing for centuries. This book is as sweeping a treatment of its subject as you can find anywhere.

A Man of the People【電子書籍】[ Chinua Achebe ]

As Minister for Culture, the Honourable M. A. Nanga is 'a man of the people', as cynical as he is charming, and a roguish opportunist. At first, the contrast between Nanga and Odili, a former pupil who is visiting the ministry, appears huge. But in the 'eat-and-let-eat' atmosphere, Odili's idealism soon collides with his lusts - and the two men's personal and political tauntings threaten to send their country into chaos. Published, prophetically, just days before Nigeria's first attempted coup in 1966, A Man of the People is an essential part of his body of work dealing with modern African history.

Care and Crisis in Chinua Achebe's Novels【電子書籍】[ Amechi Nicholas Akwanya ]

This book is a new study of Chinua Achebe’s novels in which they are read as works of literary art, as literary works are studied and discussed within the discipline of literary studies and criticism. A central concept, care, which is a humane value, is found to run in the texts, and is the crux of the test that the major characters are subjected to. What challenges them as things to be taken care of through concern may be a human being in a dire circumstance, as with Ikemefuna (Things Fall Apart), the human group itself exposed to famine in what should be harvest time (Arrow of God), or the state which needs to be brought to its proper being, as Heidegger would say (No Longer at Ease and A Man of the People), or human suffering calling to be relieved (Anthills of the Savannah). The novels are all in the tragic mode, because intervention is under some kind of interdiction.

Kindred Spirits Chinua Achebe and Toni Morrison【電子書籍】[ Professor Christopher N. Okonkwo, Ph.D ]

Winner of the 2022 College Language Association Book Prize

Nigerian novelist Chinua Achebeーauthor of Things Fall Apart, one of the towering works of twentieth-century fictionーis considered the father of modern African literature. The equally revered Toni Morrison, author of masterworks such as Beloved and one of only four Americans to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature in the past half-century, acknowledged African literature’s and Achebe’s influence on her own work. Until now, however, there has been no book that focuses on and critically explores the rich connections between these two writers.

In Kindred Spirits, Christopher Okonkwo offers the first comparative study of Morrison and Achebe. Surveying both writers’ oeuvres, Okonkwo examines significant relations between Achebe’s and Morrison’s personal backgrounds, career histories, artistic visions, and life philosophies, finding in them striking parallels. He then pairs a trilogy of novels by each author: Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, No Longer at Ease, and Arrow of God and Morrison’s Beloved, Jazz, and Paradise. Okonkwo closely analyzes these two sequencesーthrough what he theorizes as "villagism"ーas century-spanning village literature that looks to the local to reveal the universal.

Exporting Jim Crow Blackface Minstrelsy in South Africa and Beyond【電子書籍】[ Chinua Thelwell ]

Following the pathways of imperial commerce, blackface minstrel troupes began to cross the globe in the mid-nineteenth century, popularizing American racial ideologies as they traveled from Britain to its colonies in the Pacific, Asia, and Oceania, finally landing in South Africa during the 1860s and 1870s. The first popular culture export of the United States, minstrel shows frequently portrayed black characters as noncitizens who were unfit for democratic participation and contributed to the construction of a global color line.

Chinua Thelwell brings blackface minstrelsy and performance culture into the discussion of apartheid's nineteenth-century origins and afterlife, employing a broad archive of South African newspapers and magazines, memoirs, minstrel songs and sketches, diaries, and interview transcripts. Exporting Jim Crow highlights blackface minstrelsy's cultural and social impact as it became a dominant form of entertainment, moving from its initial appearances on music hall stages to its troubling twentieth-century resurgence on movie screens and at public events. This carefully researched and highly original study demonstrates that the performance of race in South Africa was inherently political, contributing to racism and shoring up white racial identity.
