A Nonviolent Theology of Love Peacefully Confessing the Apostles Creed【電子書籍】[ Sharon L. Baker Putt ]

The impetus behind the ease with which the church has periodically justified violent behavior lies in its conceptual image of God as a violent deity. This book emerges out of a passion to think differently--albeit biblically--about the character of God and articulates a theological construction of a nonviolent God--an alternative to any image of God that seems to condone human violence. It calls the church to rethink theology as something other than what might be termed "redemptive violence" and encourages Christians to reinterpret Scripture and traditional theological beliefs in ways that are more faithful to the God disclosed in Jesus of Nazareth.

Students of theology need a fresh glimpse of the love, mercy, and redemptive power of God through Jesus. As it follows the structure of the Apostles' Creed through the various theological topics, this book reminds Christians to share in God's desires for peace and love and to recommit themselves to the call of God to be "ministers of reconciliation" and lovers of both neighbors and enemies even while, at times, responding to violence with nonviolent resistance.

Confessing the Faith Yesterday and Today Essays Reformed, Dissenting, and Catholic【電子書籍】[ Alan P.F. Sell ]

What is it to confess the Christian faith, and what is the status of formal confessions of faith? How far does the context inform the content of the confession? These questions are addressed in Part One, with reference to the Reformed tradition in general, and to its English and Welsh Dissenting strand in particular. In an adverse political context the Dissenters' plea for toleration under the law was eventually granted. The question of tolerance remains alive in our very different context, and in addition we face the challenge of confessing and commending the faith in an intellectual environment in which many question Christianity's relevance and rebut traditional defenses of it. In Part Two it is recognized that Christian confessing is an ecclesial, not simply an individual, calling, and that the one confessing church catholic is visibly divided over doctrine and practice. Suggestions for ameliorating this situation are offered, though the final resolution may be a matter for the eschaton. Until then Christians are called to witness faithfully and to live hopefully as citizens of heaven. In an epilogue the challenges and pitfalls of systematic theology as a discipline involving both confession and commendation are explored.

Hermeneutical Theology and the Imperative of Public Ethics Confessing Christ in Post-Colonial World Christianity【電子書籍】[ Paul S. Chung ]

Hermeneutical Theology and the Imperative of Public Ethics is a groundbreaking attempt to present constructive missional theology in an integrative and interdisciplinary framework as it provocatively utilizes and contextualizes Reformation theology and hermeneutics concerning ethical theology embedded within the wider horizon of World Christianity. Mission as constructive theology is explored and refined in an hermeneutical and interdisciplinary fashion, underlying a new horizon of postcolonial theology and mission in light of God's act of speech. Missional church founded up God's grace of justification and Christ's diakonia of reconciliation becomes ethically oriented public church as it is engaged in mutireligious diversity of people's lives and lifeworld in the postcolonial context of World Christianity.

The Lord's Prayer Confessing the New Covenant【電子書籍】[ J. Warren Smith ]

We have all had the experience of being at church and hearing the pastor say, "And now with the confidence of children we are bold to pray, 'Our Father . . .'" but before we know it we are saying "for Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen." In the very moment of intimacy when we are given the privilege of entering the presence of our heavenly Father, our minds have drifted off. We speak the words of the prayer, not from our hearts, but from the autopilot of memory. This is mere recitation, not prayer. If in relationships familiarity breeds contempt, in the case of the Lord's Prayer, familiarity breeds thoughtlessness. The Lord's Prayer: Confessing the New Covenant is not a Bible study in the traditional sense. It challenges us to think about the Lord's Prayer anew by understanding it as a confession of the New Covenant that Christ makes with us when we are made children of God in baptism. In hearing these familiar words afresh we learn to remember our baptismal covenant so that we might live more fully into that new relationship with God and with one another.

The Power in the Mystery of Confessing Right Words in Faith!【電子書籍】[ Fidelis Edie Ngolle ]

Is there a state or position in your life that you have desired to quit? Or a dream you have been longing to achieve? If your answer is yes, then this book, which reveals the ultimate key to unlocking (open) the door to your dream, is the right one for you. The power of the mystery of confessing right words from the Word of God in scriptures has been hidden from many in the church over the years; no doubt the Bible accounts how the Israelites used their mouths to attract a curse (Num. 14: 13-14, 28), nonetheless, in recent times, by revelation (Eph. 3:3), a majority are now benefitting from the unmatchable reward it offers to a believers faith walk in Christ. The Holy Bible holds an elaborate account of the love and the blessings of God or prosperity (3 Jn. 2) while it states that, there is nothing expected of a believer or mankind to access the unfailing love of God. It is worth mentioning here that the prosperity of God is tied to certain principles, and without an alignment or obedience to these principles, there is no way anyone can access His realm of prosperity.

Confessing the Triune God【電子書籍】[ Daniel Castelo ]

At the heart of Christian witness is the confession of the triune God. Confessing the Triune God seeks to extend a conversation on Christianity's first article by way of locating Trinitarianism in the life of the worshiping faithful. It does so through an ongoing dialectic between broad and particular confessional lines. Its breadth is constituted by an ongoing assessment of ecumenical consensus and scholarly debates related to Trinitarianism; its repeated framing stems from and returns to the Wesleyan and Methodist family of traditions. In this way, Christian commitments regarding the Trinity can be depicted for their wide appeal as well as their particular logic within a specific worshiping community. The work seeks to guide readers through a process of growing awareness of how the dogma of the Trinity is central to all that Christians say, do, and hope to be.

Preaching to Nazi Germany The Pulpit and the Confessing Church【電子書籍】[ William Skiles ]

Preaching to Nazi Germany explores the history of Confessing Church preachers' engagement with the Nazi regime through an analysis of their sermons. William Skiles argues that clergy expressed various messages that aimed to limit Nazi interference in church affairs and at times even to undermine the Nazi state and its leaders and policies. Skiles demonstrates that pastors had limited freedom to publicly criticize the Nazi regime, its leaders, and its ideology, and that pastors often used Christian symbols to code their criticisms to remain inconspicuous to the Gestapo or Nazi informants. This book demonstrates how pastors used a sacred text and applied it to the problems of the churches in Nazi Germany.

A History of Catholic Moral Theology in the Twentieth Century From Confessing Sins to Liberating Consciences【電子書籍】[ James F. Keenan ]

This is an historical survey of 20th Century Roman Catholic Theological Ethics (also known as moral theology). The thesis is that only through historical investigation can we really understand how the most conservative and negative field in Catholic theology at the beginning of the 20th could become by the end of the 20th century the most innovative one. The 20th century begins with moral manuals being translated into the vernacular. After examining the manuals of Thomas Slater and Henry Davis, Keenan then turns to three works and a crowning synthesis of innovation all developed before, during and soon after the Second World War. The first by Odon Lottin asks whether moral theology is adequately historical; Fritz Tillmann asks whether it's adequately biblical; and Gerard Gilleman, whether it's adequately spiritual. Bernard Haering integrates these contributions into his Law of Christ. Of course, people like Gerald Kelly and John Ford in the US are like a few moralists elsewhere, classical gate keepers, censoring innovation. But with Humanae vitae, and successive encyclicals, bishops and popes reject the direction of moral theologians. At the same time, moral theologians, like Josef Fuchs, ask whether the locus of moral truth is in continuous, universal teachings of the magisterium or in the moral judgment of the informed conscience. In their move toward a deeper appreciation of their field as forming consciences, they turn more deeply to local experience where they continue their work of innovation. Each continent subsequently gives rise to their own respondents: In Europe they speak of autonomy and personalism; in Latin America, liberation theology; in North America, Feminism and Black Catholic theology; and, in Asia and Africa a deep post-colonial interculturatism. At the end I assert that in its nature, theological ethics is historical and innovative, seeking moral truth for the conscience by looking to speak crossculturally.

Confessing History Explorations in Christian Faith and the Historian's Vocation【

At the end of his landmark 1994 book, The Soul of the American University, historian George Marsden asserted that religious faith does indeed have a place in today’s academia. Marsden’s contention sparked a heated debate on the role of religious faith and intellectual scholarship in academic journals and in the mainstream media. The contributors to Confessing History: Explorations in Christian Faith and the Historian’s Vocation expand the discussion about religion’s role in education and culture and examine what the relationship between faith and learning means for the academy today.

The contributors to Confessing History ask how the vocation of historian affects those who are also followers of Christ. What implications do Christian faith and practice have for living out one’s calling as an historian? And to what extent does one’s calling as a Christian disciple speak to the nature, quality, or goals of one’s work as scholar, teacher, adviser, writer, community member, or social commentator? Written from several different theological and professional points of view, the essays collected in this volume explore the vocation of the historian and its place in both the personal and professional lives of Christian disciples.

Confessing the Scriptural Christ against Modern Idolatry: Inspiration, Inerrancy, and Truth in Scientific and Biblical Conflict【電子書籍】[ Philip Hale ]

The doctrine of Scripture determines precisely how theology is done and what authority theological statementsーincluding those in sermons, dogmatic texts, and confessional writingsーpossess. At stake is nothing less than truth itself and the possibility of communicating the truth of Christ to mankind.

This book compares the pre-modern approach to Scripture, following early Christian theologians, Martin Luther, and historic Lutheranism, with modernism, starting with Socinianism and continuing with Enlightenment philosophers and recent modern theologians, especially the neo-orthodox. These differences are most clearly visible in the doctrine of Scripture, especially its inspiration, and the method for establishing true facts. Modern theology starts with scientific truth as a given and will not go against it. Pre-modern Christianity started with Scripture and assumed its inerrancy, by virtue of its speaker: God, who is inerrant.

Modernism is not easily defined in traditional terms, but it represents an overturning of biblical Christianity. In academic theology confessing and sure facts are disallowed by scientific and scholarly doubt. Modernism, or Enlightenmentism, explains why bold Christian confessing has diminished. Modern exegesis and hermeneutics are the primary obstacles.

The destructive role of modernism and scientific values in historically confessing churches is explored, using the Lutheran ChurchーMissouri Synod as an example.

Understanding the Link Between Money and Spirituality A Confessing Christian’s Personal Finance Companion【電子書籍】[ Dr. Cryford Mumba PhD ]

This is a religious book prepared specially for Christians so as to appreciate the relationship between money and spirituality. It is a personal finance book covering all the tenets of managing money God has blessed you in a godly money. The overriding aim is to help someone not to worship money but the True and Living God. The book will immensely help you to master money as designed by God. As you read this book open your heart to the leading of the Lord God so that at the end of it all His name will be honored and glorified. About two-thirds of Jesus’ parables deal with money or material possessions. Over 2300 biblical passages refer to money or material possessions. There are only about 500 on prayer, and less than 500 on the subject of faith. Surely, if God gives it this much emphasis, we need to take the subject seriously. Finances are a spiritual battleground. Money is the god of the world. It is everywhere worshipped. The love of money is the controlling factor in most lives. Money is deceitful. It is a lying lord, whom the world serves. You cannot serve God and money, for money is the image of a rival god. We need to be wise about money. Yes use money; do not avoid it, do not evade it and do not pretend it is beneath you. That is unspiritual. On the other hand, do not make it your god. My primary aim being to offer you, dear readers, new ideas, new ways of looking at the subject of money. This book will not teach you any specific formula. Instead it will teach you how to learn and what to learn.

Like Confessing a Murder: Darwin, Religion and the Oxford Debate【電子書籍】[ Allan C. Hutchinson ]

At the end of June 1860, the great and good of Britain’s intellectual establishment gathered in Oxford for the annual jamboree of the Association for the Advancement of Science. Only six months after the publication of Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, the stage was set and the characters in place for the mother of all donnybrooks. But for all the posturing and opinionating about the nature of evolution, the exchanges held massive and broader implications for social authority and established control in a changing world. Although taking place over 150 years ago, the Oxford debate still inflames the same passions today and continues to set the defining terms for the struggle between science and religion. As such, this book is as much a pertinent contribution to today’s cultural wars as it is a convincing historical record.

How do we reconcile joy and sorrow in a world that is both beautiful and desperately broken? Can we put the human back into humanitarianism? Is there a way to let go of disillusionment, hold onto hope, and redeem our pain for good?

Author and non-profit director Katie Bergman explores these questions while reflecting on her geographically sprawling pilgrimage to pursue justice without being crushed by it. Driven by her personal experiences from Cambodian villages to Canadian inner-cities, from courthouses to street corners to orphanages, this book of confessions starts a dialogue about the trials and triumphs of seeking justice.

The author's personal narrative weaves in a sequence of coming-of-age stories capturing her journey of learning to grieve without despair, to dream without guilt, and to serve without defeat. The Confessing Society Foucault, Confession and Practices of Lifelong Learning【電子書籍】[ Andreas Fejes ]

"I highly appreciate the quality of Fejes’ and Dahlstedt’s research and writing. They manage to present in a comprehensible way some essential concepts of Foucault that help us to understand better what practices of lifelong learning, in a broad sense, are emerging nowadays in advanced liberal societies. In doing so, they contribute to the renewal of critical thinking in education. They convince me that such renewal is important and necessary… and I think both theoreticians and practitioners of lifelong learning will equally recognize and value this analysis, particularly also, because they present a good mix of theory and practice." -Professor Danny Wildemeersch

Today, people are constantly encouraged to verbalise and disclose their "true" inner self to others, whether on TV shows, in newspapers, in family life or together with friends. Such encouragement to disclose the self has proliferated through discourses on lifelong learning through which each citizen is encouraged to become a constant learner. The Confessing Society takes a critical stance towards the modern relentless will to disclose the self and argues that society has become a confessing society. Drawing on Foucault’s later work on confession and governmentality, this bookcarefully analyses how confession operates within practices of lifelong learning as a way to shape activated and responsible citizens and provides examples of how it might be possible to traverse the confessional truth of the present time.
In Confessing and Believing, Trevor Hart takes readers on a guided tour of the Apostles' Creed, one of the most ancient, universally recognized, and important statements of faith ever penned by the Christian Church. The Creeds' lasting value is not owed simply to its age--it has identifiable roots in the earliest baptismal ceremonies of the earliest Christians--but because, as Hart's careful interpretation demonstrates, the Creed is as comprehensive in its scope as it is concise in its testimony. While the Creeds' intrinsic values make it ideal for regular use in worship, Hart capitalizes on the Creed's structure and highly concentrated nature to provide a framework for teaching the essentials of Christian belief.

Hart reveals that there is far more to the Creed than ancient statements about God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, or the Church. Hart employs the Creeds' twelve clauses to reveal the vibrant theology behind, in, and in front of the Creed. His interpretation of the Creed is not just an historical exercise, i.e., to discover what Christians once believed, but to understand "what has been believed everywhere, always, and by all"--and to do so in a way that addresses the intellectual and cultural contexts of the 21st Century. Hart's perceptive analysis reveals why the Creed has been, is, and will continue to be both confessed and believed.
