This book contains several tables of HTML content to make reading easier. Through the story of the brilliant but conflicted young Raskolnikov and the murder he commits, Fyodor Dostoyevsky explores the theme of redemption through suffering. "Crime and Punishment" put Dostoyevsky at the forefront of Russian writers when it appeared in 1866 and is now one of the most famous and influential novels in world literature. The poverty-stricken Raskolnikov, a talented student, devises a theory about extraordinary men being above the law, since in their brilliance they think "new thoughts" and so contribute to society. He then sets out to prove his theory by murdering a vile, cynical old pawnbroker and her sister. The act brings Raskolnikov into contact with his own buried conscience and with two characters ー the deeply religious Sonia, who has endured great suffering, and Porfiry, the intelligent and discerning official who is charged with investigating the murder ー both of whom compel Raskolnikov to feel the split in his nature. Dostoyevsky provides readers with a suspenseful, penetrating psychological analysis that goes beyond the crime ー which in the course of the novel demands drastic punishment ー to reveal something about the human condition: The more we intellectualize, the more imprisoned we become. "Dostoyevsky gives me more than any scientist, more than Gauss." ーAlbert Einstein "Dostoyevsky wrote of the unconscious as if it were conscious; that is in reality the reason why his characters seem 'pathological', while they are only visualized more clearly than any other figures in imaginative literature... He was in the rank in which we set Dante, Shakespeare and Goethe." ーEdwin Muir "The greatest crime novel of all time." ーThomas Mann "'Crime and Punishment' remains the best of all murder stories, a century and a third after its publication. We have to read it ー though it is harrowing ー because, like Shakespeare, it alters our consciousness." ーHarold Bloom

Crime and Punishment【電子書籍】[ Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky ]

"Crime and Punishment" is the best known work of Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky, one of the founders of the modern novel. "Crime and Punishment" tells the story of redemption. This novel deals with the question of responsibility for the actions of each individual, background of struggle between God, morality and the theory of the Superman.
In "Crime and Punishment", Dostoevsky treats the problem of crime and the criminal mentality. He is not interested in the social aspects of criminal behaviour, and there is little said in the novel about the legalities of crime. Dostoevsky has an interior view of criminality, a conviction that crime and its inevitable punishment are deeply seated aspects of the human spirit.

Raskolnikov, the main character, is a former student who had to interrupt his studies for lack of money. Solitary dreamer, Raskolnikov rejects collective morality. He considers himself an extraordinary man and wants to test the limits of his freedom by doing evil and transgression of the moral order. He even consider themselves entitled to commit a crime, and even kill for the good of humanity in the name of a higher purpose. But the act does not go as planned: it kills the old woman, but he also murdered his sister. Raskolnikov resembles more and more to others, to those who obey common morality, the morality of obedience, and for this reason he despises. Meanwhile, he meets Sonia, a young prostitute, who is committed: Sonia sells her body to cope with their misery. Raskolnikov confesses his crime to Sonia, who pushes him to engage in the policy. He was sentenced to deportation to Siberia.

Crime and Punishment【電子書籍】[ Fyodor Dostoyevsky ]

Crime and Punishment is a novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, first published in 1866. It is the second of Dostoyevsky's full-length novels following his return from ten years of exile in Siberia. The plot of Crime and Punishment is probably familiar to many. An impoverished former student, Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov lives in St. Petersburg. Raskolnikov is a nihilist, driven by a utilitarian prospective, he contemplates committing a terrible crime. Dostoyevsky explores psychology of crime and punishment and focuses on what lies between the two end points. Raskolnikov’s inner world is full of doubts, deliria and despairーpartly a result of his utter disregard of social norms. Alienated from society, he is forced to face his tormenting guilt almost completely on his own. Pretty illustrations by Dmitrii Rybalko provide you with new impressions from reading this legendary story.

His writing is steeped in deep psychology and the exploration of human nature, while it also accurately depicts the Russian reality of his times. Dostoyevsky is usually regarded as one of the finest novelists who ever lived. In his time he was also renowned for his activity as a journalist. Each of Dostoevsky´s works is famous for its psychological profundity, and, indeed, Dostoyevsky is commonly regarded as one of the greatest psychologists in the history of literature. He specialized in the analysis of pathological states of mind that lead to insanity, murder, and suicide and in the exploration of the emotions of humiliation, self-destruction, tyrannical domination, and murderous rage. These major works are also renowned as great "novels of ideas" that treat timeless and timely issues in philosophy and politics. Nineteenth-Century Crime and Punishment【電子書籍】

This four volume collection looks at the essential issues concerning crime and punishment in the long nineteenth-century. Through the presentation of primary source documents, it explores the development of a modern pattern of crime and a modern system of penal policy and practice, illustrating the shift from eighteenth century patterns of crime (including the clash between rural custom and law) and punishment (unsystematic, selective, public, and body-centred) to nineteenth century patterns of crime (urban, increasing, and a metaphor for social instability and moral decay, before a remarkable late-century crime decline) and punishment (reform-minded, soul-centred, penetrative, uniform and private in application).

The first two volumes focus on crime itself and illustrate the role of the criminal courts, the rise and fall of crime, the causes of crime as understood by contemporary investigators, the police ways of ‘knowing the criminal,’ the role of ‘moral panics,’ and the definition of the ‘criminal classes’ and ‘habitual offenders’. The final two volumes explore means of punishment and look at the shift from public and bodily punishments to transportation, the rise of the penitentiary, the convict prison system, and the late-century decline in the prison population and loss of faith in the prison.
