Bearing Yhwh’s Name at Sinai A Reexamination of the Name Command of the Decalogue【電子書籍】[ Carmen Joy Imes ] 楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア	＜p＞The Name Command (NC) is usually interpreted as a prohibition against speaking Yhwh’s name in a particular context: false oaths, wrongful pronunciation, irreverent worship, magical practices, cursing, false teaching, and the like. However, the NC lacks the contextual specification needed to support the command as speech related. Taking seriously the narrative context at Sinai and the closest lexical parallels, a different picture emergesーone animated by concrete rituals and their associated metaphorical concepts. The unique phrase ＜em＞ns' shm＜/em＞ is one of several expressions arising from the conceptual metaphor, ＜em＞election as branding＜/em＞, that finds analogies in high-priest regalia as well as in various ways of claiming ownership in the Ancient Near East, such as inscribed monuments, the use of seals, and the branding of slaves. The NC presupposes that Yhwh has claimed Israel by placing Yhwh’s own name on her. In this light, the first two commands of the Decalogue reinforce the two sides of the covenant declaration: “I will be your God; you will be my people.” The first expresses the demand for exclusive worship and the second calls for proper representation. As a consequence, the NC invites a richer exploration of what it means to be a people in covenant with Yhwhーa people bearing his name among the nations. It is a reflections on the ten-pillar Mosaic code. For three millennia, the Ten Commandments have had a profound influence as a central moral framework for human society. "Decalogue" plumbs afresh this moral influence, while also arguing for the code's metaphysical and remedial importance. The book is neither academic nor sectarian. It is a meditation. Readers must look elsewhere for purely historic, archaeological, linguistic, theological, or denominational treatment of the subject. Instead, author Lance Matteson speaks from a reverent, biblical standpoint influenced by his background as a student of Christian Science, founded in the late nineteenth century by Mary Baker Eddy. The author also utilizes his training as a lawyer - bringing out nuances about such pivotal elements as justice, consistency, and accountability. The author gained insight too from his nine years working in the Holy Land, doing projects with the Palestinians that required ongoing negotiations with Israeli Jews and Arab Muslims and Christians ? that is, with the monotheistic heirs of Abraham and Moses in the very region trod by these grand figures. The book's structure is simple. After an introduction, a single chapter is devoted in turn to each of the Ten Commandments, with a closing chapter that looks comprehensively at the Decalogue as a whole. The discussion is straightforward, yet at times dense. Each Commandment is analyzed thoroughly. The sequential logic and connection of each command with the next is indicated. The argument is that this spiritual sense of God indicated in the commandments necessarily elevates the sense of our own identity as the divine offspring or image. Matteson argues that this spiritual sense of being is what gives these commands their moral force ? and protects them from fanatic perversion. Far from being merely an abstract theory, Matteson posits that progressively grasping ? and abiding by ? this inspired, profound spiritual-moral framework will drive progress and healing in perfectly practical ways. Individuals find healing. Society improves. The hope of redemption becomes real. Matteson mostly sidesteps interpretations of the Commandments relating to particular contemporary controversies ? leaving those mostly to the judgment of the individual reader. However, the book's wrestlings are as obviously timely today as their subject matter is timeless. One has only to consider such headline "Decalogue" topics as aggression, infidelity, dispossession, lies, and acquisitive materialism - and their opposing core social values. But the overall attitude of the book is "big picture": generic, reflective, rational. How can we place these simple historic laws in perspective? How do they interrelate? What is their rationale, their underlying logic? What is their importance to society and individuals? Why do they matter? Matteson offers his own frank views on these and related questions. He challenges the reader to think, to look beyond the surface, while essaying to be true to the texts. The author is upfront about his reverence for Scripture, while respecting nonbelievers. Dr. Thiel uses scriptures from both the Old and New Testaments that define "lawlessness". Lawlessness is defined Biblically as violations of God's laws as opposed to violation of mankind's laws. And even though refusal to keep God's commanded Holy Days, for example, are a form of "lawlessness". In this book Dr. Thiel focuses on the violation of any one of the Ten Commandments as being an act of lawlessness. It is this violation that leads to death and is a determining factor in Matthew 7:23 when Jesus declares He never knew those who practice lawlessness: Matt 7:23 And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!' There is no other definition in the Bible of lawlessness than disobeying the Ten Commandments or any other commandment of God. The key word in Matthew 7:23 is the word "practice", which indicates an intentional disregard for the law of God.＜/p＞＜p＞Dr. Thiel uses scriptures from the Old Testament to show the Ten Commandments were actually laws that were in force prior to Mt. Sinai. He goes on to use additional scriptures that show Jesus kept the Ten Commandments and even shows how He expanded the clarification of the spiritual aspect the law. The author then continues to provide verses that point to the fact that the commandments were obeyed even after the Messiah's crucifixion. Still other verses prove the Sabbath and other commandments will be obeyed during the Millennium and beyond, even after the creation of the new heaven and new earth.＜/p＞＜p＞There is a "mystery of lawlessness" that is explored in 2 Thessalonians. Dr. Thiel provides the verses that show this mystery was already at work when Paul was ministering. How is this mystery of lawlessness tied to the Beast "of the sea" in the book of Revelation? Dr. Thiel provides scriptures that reveal the fact that the relationship between Satan, the Beast of the sea, and the Antichrist is centered around violation of the Ten Commandments and their persecution of all that refuse to violate God's laws.＜/p＞＜p＞Perhaps one of the strongest points this reader took away from the book is this verse:＜/p＞＜p＞1 John 2:3-4 3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, "I know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.＜/p＞＜p＞If I say I know Jesus, and don't keep His commandments, I am a liar!
