Dorothea Lange, Documentary Photography, and Twentieth-Century America Reinventing Self and Nation【電子書籍】[ Carol Quirke ]

Dorothea Lange, Documentary Photography, and Twentieth-Century America charts the life of Dorothea Lange (1895?1965), whose life was radically altered by the Depression, and whose photography helped transform the nation. The book begins with her childhood in immigrant, metropolitan New York, shifting to her young adulthood as a New Woman who apprenticed herself to Manhattan’s top photographers, then established a career as portraitist to San Francisco’s elite. When the Great Depression shook America’s economy, Lange was profoundly affected. Leaving her studio, Lange confronted citizens’ anguish with her camera, documenting their economic and social plight. This move propelled her to international renown.

This biography synthesizes recent New Deal scholarship and photographic history and probes the unique regional histories of the Pacific West, the Plains, and the South. Lange’s life illuminates critical transformations in the U.S., specifically women’s evolving social roles and the state’s growing capacity to support vulnerable citizens. The author utilizes the concept of "care work," the devalued nurturing of others, often considered women’s work, to analyze Lange’s photography and reassert its power to provoke social change**.** Lange’s portrayal of the Depression’s ravages is enmeshed in a deeply political project still debated today, of the nature of governmental responsibility toward citizens’ basic needs.

Students and the general reader will find this a powerful and insightful introduction to Dorothea Lange, her work, and legacy. Dorothea Lange, Documentary Photography, and Twentieth-Century America makes a compelling case for the continuing political and social significance of Lange’swork, as she recorded persistent injustices such as poverty, labor exploitation, racism, and environmental degradation.

Seen and Unseen What Dorothea Lange, Toyo Miyatake, and Ansel Adams's Photographs Reveal About the Japanese American Incarceration【電子書籍】[ Elizabeth Partridge ]

Winner of the Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Medal
Winner of the BolognaRagazzi Award for Photography
Named a Best Book of the Year by Booklist, Kirkus Reviews, School Library Journal, New York Public Library, Chicago Public Library, and others.
★ "This arresting work brings history to vivid life." ーKirkus Reviews, starred review
★ "[An] exquisitely crafted, fiercely provocative work of nonfiction." ーBCCB,starred review
"Ingeniously designed." ーThe New York Times

This important work of nonfiction features powerful images of the Japanese American incarceration captured by three photographersーDorothea Lange, Toyo Miyatake, and Ansel Adamsーalong with firsthand accounts of this grave moment in history.

Three months after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, US President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered the incarceration of all Japanese and Japanese Americans living on the West Coast of the United States. Families, teachers, farm workersーall were ordered to leave behind their homes, their businesses, and everything they owned. Japanese and Japanese Americans were forced to live under hostile conditions in incarceration camps, their futures uncertain.

Three photographers set out to document life at Manzanar, an incarceration camp in the California desert:

Dorothea Lange was a photographer from San Francisco best known for her haunting Depression-era images. Dorothea was hired by the US government to record the conditions of the camps. Deeply critical of the policy, she wanted her photos to shed light on the harsh reality of incarceration.

Toyo Miyatake was a Japanese-born, Los Angeles?based photographer who lent his artistic eye to portraying dancers, athletes, and events in the Japanese community. Imprisoned at Manzanar, he devised a way to smuggle in photographic equipment, determined to show what was really going on inside the barbed-wire confines of the camp.

Ansel Adams was an acclaimed landscape photographer and environmentalist. Hired by the director of Manzanar, Ansel hoped his carefully curated pictures would demonstrate to the rest of the United States the resilience of those in the camps.

In Seen and Unseen, Elizabeth Partridge and Lauren Tamaki weave together these photographers' images, firsthand accounts, and stunning original art to examine the history, heartbreak, and injustice of the Japanese American incarceration.

AWARENESS OF AMERICAN HISTORY: This impactful book engages with an underrepresented topic in American history, and highlights important and timely themes like primary sources, censorship, and visual literacy.

SUBSTANTIAL BACKMATTER: Featuring eighteen pages of backmatter, including an Author's and Illustrator's Note, footnotes, photo credits, biographies of each photographer, and more.

Hermann and Dorothea【電子書籍】[ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe ]

There are few modern poems of any country so perfect in their kind as the "Hermann and Dorothea" of Goethe. In clearness of characterization, in unity of tone, in the adjustment of background and foreground, in the conduct of the narrative, it conforms admirably to the strict canons of art; yet it preserves a freshness and spontaneity in its emotional appeal that are rare in works of so classical a perfection in form. The basis of the poem is a historical incident. In the year 1731 the Archbishop of Salzburg drove out of his diocese a thousand Protestants, who took refuge in South Germany, and among whom was a girl who became the bride of the son of a rich burgher. The occasion of the girl's exile was changed by Goethe to more recent times, and in the poem she is represented as a German from the west bank of the Rhine fleeing from the turmoil caused by the French Revolution. The political element is not a mere background, but is woven into the plot with consummate skill, being used, at one point, for example, in the characterization of Dorothea, who before the time of her appearance in the poem has been deprived of her first betrothed by the guillotine; and, at another, in furnishing a telling contrast between the revolutionary uproar in France and the settled peace of the German village. The characters of the father and the minister Goethe took over from the original incident, the mother he invented, and the apothecary he made to stand for a group of friends. But all of these persons, as well as the two lovers, are recreated, and this so skillfully that while they are made notably familiar to us as individuals, they are no less significant as permanent types of human nature.

Vocation and Desire George Eliot's Heroines【電子書籍】[ Dorothea Barrett ]

First published in 1989. Generations of critics have seen George Eliot as a conservative Victorian high moralist and sybil. Vocation and Desire questions that image, and finds in her work elements of anger, feminism, subversiveness, revenge, iconoclasm, wit, and eroticism ? elements that we have been taught not to expect. After looking at the development of the sybilline image and the gradual eclipse of the subversive George Eliot ? which Eliot herself initiated ? Dorothea Barrett goes on to investigate the evidence of the novels themselves and finds an alternative emphasis. Her study of the heroines of the six major novels and issues of language and desire provides a refreshing and acute analysis of the contradictions and strengths of Eliot’s work. She also considers the reception of George Eliot by feminist critics and the broader implications of her work for contemporary feminism. This title will be of interest to students of literature.

The Life and Turbulent Times of Clara Dorothea Rackham Suffragist, Socialist, and Social Reformer【電子書籍】[ Maroula Joannou ]

This is the first critical study of Clara Dorothea Rackham n?e Tabor (1875?1966), a towering figure in the suffrage, labour, co-operative, peace, and adult education movements but virtually forgotten today.

This clearly written and engaging study is based on unpublished primary sources including Rackham’s unpublished speeches, letters, diaries, and contemporary media coverage of her work in local and national archives. It reassesses this remarkable woman not only as a politician who changed the face of Cambridge, the university city in which she lived and worked, but also as a public intellectual whose feminist advocacy of a fair, just, and equal society helped pave the way to Britain’s postwar settlement and Welfare State. Rackham came to prominence as Chairman of the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies, as a government factory inspector, and championing the rights of unemployed women in the 1930s. An early broadcaster on BBC radio, and among the first women appointed magistrates and councillors, her name became synonymous with enlightened local government. The transformation of women’s lives in Victorian and twentieth-century Britain is crucial to understanding Rackham’s ideals, intellectual formation, and priorities as a Labour Party politician.

This book will be of interest to historians and students of gender, history, and women’s lives.

The Lady and the President The Letters of Dorothea Dix and Millard Fillmore【電子書籍】[ Charles M. Snyder ]

When the private papers of Millard Fillmore, thought to have been destroyed in 1889, were discovered they proved to include a large number of letters to Fillmore from Dorothea Dix, the renowned crusader for the humane treatment of the insane. Almost simultaneously, the letters of Fillmore to Dix, which had lain forgotten in a private collection since 1887, became available.

Thus overnight a correspondence of more than a hundred and fifty letters, spanning nearly twenty years, opened new perspectives upon two prominent Americans whose friendship was known to few during their lifetimes and had long been forgotten by historians.

All the extant correspondence between the thirteenth President of the United States and the humanitarian reformer is published here for the first time. Charles M. Snyder provides an illuminating background on the principles and a running commentary on the events that shaped their lives and their relationship.

The Lady & the President provides a wealth of raw material for a reinterpretation of these two neglected figures, offering new insights into their warm personal relations, their roles as national leaders, and the perilous times in which they lived.

Tall Tales are two collections of interactive photo-poetry-prose bound in one volume. Each collection features twenty individual fables. Each photo-inspired poem is accompanied by a blank page, inviting the reader to reflect, spin their own taleーscrapbook style. True to the age-old tradition of storytelling, a tale only gets better over time as it is told, retold, and embellished. Where did the tales come from? Growing up, woodlands were my playground, and they have always held a sense of enchantment. To me, the trees never felt lifeless or static but were rather the beholders of historyーfact and legend. To this day, my inner child loves to listen to the whispered tales told by rustling leaves and swaying branches. The unique markings of their bark and the particular features of their windblown shapes add to the sense of aliveness they are exuding. The entire creation of this bookーprocess and content as well as layoutーcame about in an inspired and inspiring journey. As I’ve noted in the introduction, found in the center page, the book was writing me rather than the other way around. True to form of all my creative expression, I never quite know where my adventure will take me. I’ve come to appreciate the unfolding of each step, realizing my job is to allow, to observe, to witness, to discover, and to document what reveals itself to me. It is my sincere wish that the reader will enjoy their journey of discovery as much as I have mine.

The Practices of the Enlightenment Aesthetics, Authorship, and the Public【電子書籍】[ Dorothea von M?cke ]

Rethinking the relationship between eighteenth-century Pietist traditions and Enlightenment thought and practice, The Practices of Enlightenment unravels the complex and often neglected religious origins of modern secular discourse. Mapping surprising routes of exchange between the religious and aesthetic writings of the period and recentering concerns of authorship and audience, this book revitalizes scholarship on the Enlightenment.

By engaging with three critical categoriesーaesthetics, authorship, and the public sphereーThe Practices of Enlightenment illuminates the relationship between religious and aesthetic modes of reflective contemplation, autobiography and the hermeneutics of the self, and the discursive creation of the public sphere. Focusing largely on German intellectual life, this critical engagement also extends to France through Rousseau and to England through Shaftesbury. Rereading canonical works and lesser-known texts by Goethe, Lessing, and Herder, the book challenges common narratives recounting the rise of empiricist philosophy, the idea of the "sensible" individual, and the notion of the modern author as celebrity, bringing new perspective to the Enlightenment concepts of instinct, drive, genius, and the public sphere.

From Deliberative Democracy to Consent Democracy Athenian public finances and the formation of a competence elite in the 4th century BC【電子書籍】[ Dorothea Rohde ]

The political system of Athens experienced a rebalancing in the period between 404 and 307, which cannot be adequately captured with the keywords “decline” or “crisis”. The comprehensive analysis of Athens' public finances opens up a new approach to this hinge period between classical and Hellenism and explains the evident change in the political order through the gradual and consensual transformation of the broad-based deliberative democracy into one led from above, but through the attribution of competencies and moral-political trust Consent democracy carried into the ruling elite. Thus an adaptable mechanism had been created, as it was then to prevail in many places in Hellenism and which was constitutive for it.

Postmodern Philosophy and the Scientific Turn【電子書籍】[ Dorothea E. Olkowski ]

A groundbreaking, interdisciplinary approach to the study of consciousness: “Beautifully written, engaging throughout, and captivating” (Claire Colebrook, The Pennsylvania State University).

What can come of a scientific engagement with postmodern philosophy? Some scientists have claimed that the social sciences and humanities have nothing to contribute, except perhaps peripherally, to their research. Dorothea E. Olkowski shows that mathematics itselfーthe historic link between science and philosophyーplays a fundamental role in the development of the worldviews that drive both fields.

Focusing on language, its usage and expression of worldview, she develops a phenomenological account of human thought and action to explicate the role of philosophy in the sciences. Olkowski proposes a model of phenomenology, both scientific and philosophical, that helps make sense of reality and composes an ethics for dealing with unpredictability in our world.

Peirce Mattering Value, Realism, and the Pragmatic Maxim【電子書籍】[ Dorothea Sophia ]

“Mattering” is the process and product of reality. It is one from nothing. Using Charles Sanders Peirce’s systematic method of inquiry, Dorothea Sophia explores the meaning, the value, and the consequences of “mattering”: to be able to say, beyond reasonable doubt, “it matters,” and that being on an evolving, developing telos, “it is mattering.”

Peirce Mattering: Value, Realism, and the Pragmatic Maxim develops a three-part hypothesis of “mattering”: value functions as a condition of intelligibilityーpurpose, as the ground of “mattering” is dependent on value; powerーthe capacity to causeーis the enabler of force functioning as actual “mattering”; and “mattering” is evolutionary realization of universal telos.

This book argues that championing one’s rights, with disregard for consequencesーeven for probabilitiesーand disowning responsibility has come to mean that choice, the hallmark of human freedom, is increasingly circumscribed, as are our chances of saving our world from ecocide.

Deleuze, Bergson, Merleau-Ponty The Logic and Pragmatics of Creation, Affective Life, and Perception【電子書籍】[ Dorothea E. Olkowski ]

Deleuze, Bergson, Merleau-Ponty: The Logic and Pragmatics of Creation, Affective Life, and Perception offers the only full-length examination of the relationships between Deleuze, Bergson and Merleau-Ponty.

Henri Bergson (1859?1941), Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1908-1961), and Gilles Deleuze (1925?1995) succeeded one another as leading voices in French philosophy over a span of 136 years. Their relationship to one another's work involved far more than their overlapping lifetimes. Bergson became both the source of philosophical insight and a focus of criticism for Merleau-Ponty and Deleuze. Deleuze criticized Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology as well as his interest in cognitive and natural science. Author Dorothea Olkowski points out that each of these philosophers situated their thought in relation to their understandings of crucial developments and theories taken up in the history and philosophy of science, and this has been difficult for Continental philosophy to grasp. She articulates the differences between these philosophers with respect to their disparate approaches to the physical sciences and with how their views of science function in relation to their larger philosophical projects.

In Deleuze, Bergson, Merleau-Ponty, Olkowski examines the critical areas of the structure of time and memory, the structure of consciousness, and the question of humans' relation to nature. She reveals that these philosophers are working from inside one another's ideas and are making strong claims about time, consciousness, reality, and their effects on humanity that converge and diverge. The result is a clearer picture of the intertwined workings of Continental philosophy and its fundamental engagement with the sciences.

California on the Breadlines Dorothea Lange, Paul Taylor, and the Making of a New Deal Narrative【電子書籍】[ Jan Goggans ]

California on the Breadlines is the compelling account of how Dorothea Lange, the Great Depression’s most famous photographer, and Paul Taylor, her labor economist husband, forged a relationship that was privateーthey both divorced spouses to be togetherーcollaborative, and richly productive. Lange and Taylor poured their considerable energies into the decade-long project of documenting the plight of California’s dispossessed, which in 1939 culminated in the publication of their landmark book, American Exodus: A Record of Human Erosion. Jan Goggans blends biography, literature, and history to retrace the paths that brought Lange and Taylor together. She shows how American Exodus set forth a new way of understanding those in crisis during the economic disaster in California and ultimately informed the way we think about the Great Depression itself.

Further articles include notes on Warburg’s Serpent Ritual lecture of 1923; his politico-cultural initiative in 1914?1915; his work on caricature, in particular the Struwwelpeter topic; and discussions on the topic of Judaica.

The Viennese art historian Fritz Saxl became his trusted friend and collaborator helping to gather Warburg’s large collection of books and photographs into the foundation of an academic institution in Hamburg in the 1920s, and then for a second time in London in the 1930s. The Warburg Institute has become one of the world’s leading centres of intellectual history. Between Lives: An Artist and Her World【電子書籍】[ Dorothea Tanning ]

The life and times of one of our most enchanting artists; a twentieth-century fairy tale, lovingly remembered and luminously told.

Fourteen years ago, the artist Dorothea Tanning published Birthday, a collection of reminiscences. Now she has expanded it into a memoir of her journey through the last century as confidant, collaborator, and muse to some of its most inspired minds and personalities: a diverse assemblage that ranges from the fathers of dada and surrealism to Virgil Thompson, George Balanchine, Alberto Giacometti, Dylan Thomas, Truman Capote, Joan Mir?, James Merrill, and many more. At its center is the relationship, tenderly rendered, between Tanning and her famed husband, the enigmatic surrealist Max Ernst.

Whether recalling the poignant presence of her friend Joseph Cornell or simply marveling at the facades along a Venice canal, "their filmy reflections fluttering in the dirty canal like fragile altar cloths hung out to dry," Tanning's writing is beguiling, wry, and shot through with the same eye for pregnant detail and immanent magic that marks her art.
