The Common Nature of Epidemics / and their relation to climate and civilization【電子書籍】[ Southwood Smith ]

The recent very serious outbreak of Epidemic disease among the cattle in England may not unreasonably induce the fear that a human Epidemic is approaching. Cholera has prevailed in Paris and several other places on the Continent during the late autumn, and it is well known that the former visitations of that terrible disease in this country have appeared the year following similar attacks abroad. Moreover, human epidemics in numerous instances have been preceded or accompanied by extensive murrain among cattle.

Never was a country guided through the perils of an Epidemic with greater wisdom and energy than Great Britain during the Cholera of 1848?9. The master spirit on that occasion was Dr Southwood Smith. Long previous to that time this great man had had a more extended experience of the nature, causes, and treatment of Zymotic diseases than perhaps any physician before or since. He had made them his special study, and applied the great powers of his clear, reasoning, and philosophic mind, to the discovery of their causes, and the best means of arresting their progress.

Whilst occupying the post of responsibility as the chief medical adviser of the nation in his capacity of Medical Member of the General Board of Health, Dr Southwood Smith left behind him a set of official reports on the subjects of Epidemics, Contagion, and Quarantine, which will never die.

In times of distress it is only natural to look for the most efficient help. Our herds only have extensively suffered of late, but we ourselves may follow, and it is well to be prepared. Even with reference to the causes and treatment of the Epizootic, the reasonings, facts, and conclusions again brought forward in the following pages will apply. But should the worst fears become realized, and an extensive human epidemic follow, these writings will tell with greater force, and the nation will be better prepared to meet the danger, for having calmly considered beforehand the probability of its approach.

When Germs Travel Six Major Epidemics That Have Invaded America and the Fears They Have Unleashed【電子書籍】[ Howard Markel ]

The struggle against deadly microbes is endless. Diseases that have plagued human beings since ancient times still exist, new maladies make their way into the headlines, we are faced with vaccine shortages, and the threat of germ warfare has reemerged as a worldwide threat.

In this riveting account, medical historian Howard Markel takes an eye-opening look at the fragility of the American public health system. He tells the distinctive stories of six epidemics?tuberculosis, bubonic plague, trachoma, typhus, cholera, and AIDS?to show how our chief defense against diseases from outside the United States has been to attempt to deny entry to carriers. He explains why this approach never worked, and makes clear that it is useless in today’s world of bustling international travel and porous borders.

Illuminating our foolhardy attempts at isolation and showing that globalization renders us all potential inhabitants of the so-called Hot Zone, Markel makes a compelling case for a globally funded public health program that could stop the spread of epidemics and safeguard the health of everyone on the planet.

Health Without Borders Epidemics in the Era of Globalization【電子書籍】[ Paolo Vineis ]

This book discusses globalization and its impact on human health. The population of the world grew from 1 billion in 1800 to 7 billion in 2012, and over the past 50 years the mean temperature has risen faster than ever before. Both factors continue to rise, as well as health inequalities. Our environment is changing rapidly, with tremendous consequences for our health. These changes produce complex and constantly varying interactions between the biosphere, economy, climate and human health, forcing us to approach future global health trends from a new perspective. Preventive actions to improve health, especially in low-income countries, are essential if our future is going to be a sustainable one. After a period of undeniable improvement in the health of the world’s population, this improvement is likely to slow down and we will experience? at least locally ? crises of the same magnitude as have been observed in financial markets since 2009. There is instability in health systems, which will worsen if preventive and buffering mechanisms do not take on a central role. We cannot exclude the possibility that the allied forces of poverty, social inequalities, climate change, industrial food and lack of governance will lead to a deterioration in the health of large sectors of the population. In low-income countries, while many of the traditional causes of death (infectious diseases) are still highly prevalent, other threats typical of affluent societies (obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases) are increasing. Africa is not only affected by malaria, TB and HIV, but also by skyrocketing rates of cancer. The book argues that the current situation requires effective and coordinated multinational interventions guided by the principle of health as a common good. An entirely competition-driven economy cannot ? by its very nature ? address global challenges that require full international cooperation. A communal global leadership is called for.

Paolo Vineis is Chair of Environmental Epidemiology at Imperial College. His current research activities focus on examining biomarkers of disease risk as well as studying the effects of climate change on non-communicable diseases.

“From morality to molecules, environment to equity, climate change to cancer, and politics to pathology, this is a wonderful tour of global health ? consistently presented in a clear, readable format. Really, an important contribution.”

Professor Sir Michael Marmot
Director, Institute of Health Equity
University College London
Author of “The Health Gap”

“This book is a salutary and soundly argued reminder that the ‘common good’ is not simply what remains after individuals and groups have appropriated the majority of societal resources: it is in fact the foundation on which any society rests and without which it collapses.”

Rodolfo Saracci, International Agency for Research on Cancer, Lyon, France

The Common Nature of Epidemics and their Relation to Climate and Civilization【電子書籍】[ Thomas Southwood Smith ]

Some account of the structure and functions of the human frame, of the action of physical agents on this wonderful machinery, and of the principles which relate to Individual, as well as to Public Health, ought to form a part of elemental education. There is a growing conviction that the necessity for such knowledge is not restricted to the physician; that it is essential also to the educator, the mother, the nurse, and indeed to every one who would enjoy, together with the due development of his physical, intellectual, and moral nature, the full term of the boon of life. The main causes which shorten and embitter human life, as far as that unhappy result depends on the disturbance of health, are within our own control. There is the closest connection between the knowledge we have acquired of the physical conditions on which the life and health of individuals and communities depend, and on our command over those conditions. Every fact we have learnt respecting the great laws of nature, on our conformity to which our very existence depends, has taught us that the circumstances which produce excessive sickness and early death are preventible. The character of Pestilence which gave it its great power and terrorーthat it walketh in darkness,ーis its character no longer. Its veil has fallen, and with it its strength. A clear and steady light now marks its course from its commencement to its end; and that light places in equally broad and strong relief its antagonist and conquerorーCleanliness.

The Epidemics of the Middle Ages The Black Death, The Dancing Mania & The Sweating Sickness【電子書籍】[ J. F. C. Hecker ]

In "The Epidemics of the Middle Ages," J. F. C. Hecker presents a meticulous survey of the plagues and pestilences that ravaged Europe during the medieval period. Hecker's literary style is both scholarly and accessible, weaving together vivid historical narratives with epidemiological insights. Drawing upon an array of primary sources, Hecker contextualizes the social, economic, and cultural impacts of these epidemics, particularly the Black Death. His work is situated within a burgeoning historical discourse that seeks to understand the relationship between disease and societal transformation, effectively bridging the gap between medical history and the broader human experience. J. F. C. Hecker, a prominent physician and historian of the 19th century, was deeply influenced by the intellectual climate of his time, which favored empirical research and critical examination of past events. His background in medicine illuminated his exploration of medieval diseases, allowing him to address contemporaneous health crises with a historical lens. Hecker's passion for uncovering the realities behind epidemics reflects not just an academic pursuit, but a broader concern for public health. This book is essential reading for historians, medical professionals, and general readers alike, offering a profound understanding of how epidemics shaped medieval society and continue to resonate in contemporary debates about public health. Hecker's erudition and clarity reveal the enduring relevance of historical epidemics in our ongoing struggle against disease.

A Very Remarkable Sickness Epidemics in the Petit Nord, 1670 to 1846【電子書籍】[ Paul Hackett ]

The area between the Great Lakes and Lake Winnipeg, bounded on the north by the Hudson Bay lowlands, is sometimes known as the "Petit Nord." Providing a link between the cities of eastern Canada and the western interior, the Petit Nord was a critical communication and transportation hub for the North American fur trade for over 200 years.Although new diseases had first arrived in the New World in the 16th century, by the end of the 17th century shorter transoceanic travel time meant that a far greater number of diseases survived the journey from Europe and were still able to infect new communities. These acute, directly transmitted infectious diseases ? including smallpox, influenza, and measles ? would be responsible for a monumental loss of life and would forever transform North American Aboriginal communities.Historical geographer Paul Hackett meticulously traces the diffusion of these diseases from Europe through central Canada to the West. Significant trading gatherings at Sault Ste. Marie, the trade carried throughout the Petit Nord by Hudson Bay Company ships, and the travel nexus at the Red River Settlement, all provided prime breeding ground for the introduction, incubation and transmission of acute disease. Hackett?s analysis of evidence in fur-trade journals and oral history, combined with his study of the diffusion behaviour and characteristics of specific diseases, yields a comprehensive picture of where, when, and how the staggering impact of these epidemics was felt.

The Return of Epidemics Health and Society in Peru During the Twentieth Century【電子書籍】[ Marcos Cueto ]

Historians have long recognized epidemics to be a significant, though sometimes hidden, factor in the fortunes of societies and civilizations. The study of epidemics heightens our understanding of relationships between economic systems and living conditions. It illuminates the ideologies and religious beliefs of the affected community and illustrates the efforts and inadequacies of public health systems. This investigation of the history of epidemics in various parts of Peru during the twentieth century opens up a new field for Latin American studies to include health and disease. These are important areas of the past that enable us to understand better the living conditions of people, the role of state authority and the dynamics of social movement. Marcos Cueto examines five series of epidemics: the bubonic plague of 1903-1930; the fever epidemic of 1919-1922; the typhus and small pox epidemics in the Andes; attempts to control and eradicate malaria, and the cholera epidemics of 1991. In each case he studies the biological and ecological factors that caused the outbreak, and the techniques and policies applied to fight it, together with the response of the affected society. The experience of epidemics in Peru has been cyclical. Poverty breeds disease which in turn results in further poverty. One of the aims of this study is to highlight areas of success and failure in the fight against epidemics in the hope that such awareness may help break this vicious circle.

Famine and Pestilence in the Late Roman and Early Byzantine Empire A Systematic Survey of Subsistence Crises and Epidemics【電子書籍】[ Dionysios Ch. Stathakopoulos ]

Famine and Pestilence in the Late Roman and Early Byzantine Empire presents the first analytical account in English of the history of subsistence crises and epidemic diseases in Late Antiquity. Based on a catalogue of all such events in the East Roman/Byzantine empire between 284 and 750, it gives an authoritative analysis of the causes, effects and internal mechanisms of these crises and incorporates modern medical and physiological data on epidemics and famines. Its interest is both in the history of medicine and the history of Late Antiquity, especially its social and demographic aspects. Stathakopoulos develops models of crises that apply not only to the society of the late Roman and early Byzantine world, but also to early modern and even contemporary societies in Africa or Asia. This study is therefore both a work of reference for information on particular events (e.g. the 6th-century Justinianic plague) and a comprehensive analysis of subsistence crises and epidemics as agents of historical causation. As such it makes an important contribution to the ongoing debate on Late Antiquity, bringing a fresh perspective to comment on the characteristic features that shaped this period and differentiate it from Antiquity and the Middle Ages.

Active Learning to Minimize the Possible Risk of Future Epidemics【電子書籍】[ KC Santosh ]

Future epidemics are inevitable, and it takes months and even years to collect fully annotated data. The sheer magnitude of data required for machine learning algorithms, spanning both shallow and deep structures, raises a fundamental question: how big data is big enough to effectively tackle future epidemics? In this context, active learning, often referred to as human or expert-in-the-loop learning, becomes imperative, enabling machines to commence learning from day one with minimal labeled data. In unsupervised learning, the focus shifts toward constructing advanced machine learning models like deep structured networks that autonomously learn over time, with human or expert intervention only when errors occur and for limited dataーa process we term mentoring. In the context of Covid-19, this book explores the use of deep features to classify data into two clusters (0/1: Covid-19/non-Covid-19) across three distinct datasets: cough sound, Computed Tomography (CT) scan, and chest x-ray (CXR). Not to be confused, our primary objective is to provide a strong assertion on how active learning could potentially be used to predict disease from any upcoming epidemics. Epidemics Examined and Explained: or, Living Germs Proved by Analogy to be a Source of Disease Unveiling the Origins of Contagious Diseases【電子書籍】[ John Grove ]

In "Epidemics Examined and Explained: or, Living Germs Proved by Analogy to be a Source of Disease," John Grove delves into the complex interplay between microorganisms and human health. Grove employs meticulous empirical observations and analogical reasoning to argue that living germs are not only prevalent but are a fundamental source of diseases that afflict humanity. His literary style is characterized by scholarly rigor, blending scientific inquiry with philosophical reflection, positioning the work within the burgeoning field of microbiology and germ theory. This text serves as a critical precursor to modern understandings of epidemiology, drawing on historical outbreaks to illustrate the mechanisms by which diseases spread and influence public health. John Grove, a pioneering figure in early microbiological studies, was deeply influenced by the contemporaneous advancements in experimental science during the 19th century. His background in natural philosophy and keen observational skills motivated his exploration of pathogens, reflected in his rigorous analysis of epidemiological cases. Grove's insights were groundbreaking at a time when many attributed diseases to miasmas or humoral imbalances, highlighting his role as a forward-thinking scientist advocating for evidence-based approaches to health. Readers with an interest in the origins of medical science and public health will find "Epidemics Examined and Explained" an invaluable resource. Grove'??s thorough analysis not only deepens our understanding of infectious diseases but also challenges us to reconsider the underpinnings of contemporary medical discourse. This seminal work invites critical engagement with the historical roots of germ theory and remains relevant for anyone seeking to grasp the complexities of disease in our society.

Living in the Shadows of China's HIV/AIDS Epidemics Sex, Drugs and Bad Blood【電子書籍】[ Shelley Torcetti ]

Identifying the existing challenges and shortfalls of China's current HIV/AIDS programming, this book provides an understanding of the history of HIV/AIDS in China, comparing government responses to global best practice in prevention and treatment.

Considering three key populations in China, namely, female sex workers, people who inject drugs and floating migrants, Living in the Shadows of China's HIV/AIDS Epidemics highlights the effects of high mobility and marginalisation on the spread of HIV in China. It is argued that these groups often suffer from stigmatisation and a lack of human security, resulting in sub-optimal outcomes for HIV/AIDS intervention and prevention efforts and the reinforcement of high-risk behaviours, further contributing to the transmission of the virus to the general population. In adding to the emerging body of literature, this book further elucidates the myriad of challenges posed by HIV/AIDS epidemics, allowing sustained engagement and a fresh insight into how governments might respond to the needs of individuals living with HIV/AIDS, both in China and globally.

Including case studies which give voice to research participants in a rich and engaging way, this book will appeal to students and scholars of Chinese Studies, Asian Studies, International Relations and Political Science, as well as those engaged in epidemiological studies in the Health Sciences.

A History of Epidemics in Britain (Volume II of II) : From the Extinction of Plague to the Present Time【電子書籍】[ Charles Creighton ]

A History of Epidemics in Britain (Volume II of II) : From the Extinction of Plague to the Present Time

This volume is the continuation of ‘A History of Epidemics in Britain from a.d. 664 to the Extinction of Plague’, and is the completion of the history to the present time. The two volumes may be referred to conveniently as the first and second of a ‘History of Epidemics in Britain.’ In adhering to the plan of a systematic history instead of annals I have encountered more difficulties in the second volume than in the first. In the earlier period the predominant infection was Plague, which was not only of so uniform a type as to give no trouble, in the nosological sense, but was often so dramatic in its occasions and so enormous in its effects as to make a fitting historical theme. With its disappearance after 1666, the field is seen after a time to be occupied by a numerous brood of fevers, anginas and other infections, which are not always easy to identify according to modern definitions, and were recorded by writers of the time, for example Wintringham, in so dry or abstract a manner and with so little of human interest as to make but tedious reading in an almost obsolete phraseology. Descriptions of the fevers of those times, under the various names of synochus, synocha, nervous, putrid, miliary, remittent, comatose, and the like, have been introduced into the chapter on Continued Fevers so as to show their generic as well as their differential character; but a not less important purpose of the chapter has been to illustrate the condition of the working classes, the unwholesomeness of towns, London in particular, the state of the gaols and of the navy, the seasons of dearth, the times of war-prices or of depressed trade, and all other vicissitudes of well-being, of which the amount of Typhus and Relapsing Fever has always been a curiously correct index. It is in this chapter that the epidemiology comes into closest contact with social and economic history. In the special chapter for Ireland the association is so close, and so uniform over a long period, that the history may seem at times to lose its distinctively medical character.

Epidemics The Impact of Germs and Their Power over Humanity【電子書籍】[ Joshua S. Loomis ]

This book comprehensively reviews the 10 most influential epidemics in history, going beyond morbid accounts of symptoms and statistics to tell the often forgotten stories of what made these epidemics so calamitous.

Unlike other books on epidemics, which either focus on the science behind how microbes cause disease or tell first-person accounts of one particular disease, Epidemics: The Impact of Germs and Their Power over Humanity takes a holistic approach to explaining how these diseases have shaped who we are as a society. Each of the worst epidemic diseases is discussed from the perspective of how it has been a causative agent of change with respect to our history, religious traditions, social interactions, and technology. In looking at world history through the lens of epidemic diseases, readers will come to appreciate how much we owe to the oldest and smallest parasites.

Adults and students interested in science and historyーand especially anyone who appreciates a good story and has a healthy curiosity for the lesser-known facts of lifeーwill find this book of interest. Health-care workers will also benefit greatly from this text, as will college students majoring in biology or a pre-health field.

Epidemics Hate and Compassion from the Plague of Athens to AIDS【電子書籍】[ Samuel K. Cohn, Jr. ]

By investigating thousands of descriptions of epidemics reaching back before the fifth-century-BCE Plague of Athens to the distrust and violence that erupted with Ebola in 2014, Epidemics challenges a dominant hypothesis in the study of epidemics, that invariably across time and space, epidemics provoked hatred, blaming of the 'other', and victimizing bearers of epidemic diseases, particularly when diseases were mysterious, without known cures or preventive measures, as with AIDS during the last two decades of the twentieth century. However, scholars and public intellectuals, especially post-AIDS, have missed a fundamental aspect of the history of epidemics. Instead of sparking hatred and blame, this study traces epidemics' socio-psychological consequences across time and discovers a radically different picture: that epidemic diseases have more often unified societies across class, race, ethnicity, and religion, spurring self-sacrifice and compassion.

Dread How Fear and Fantasy Have Fueled Epidemics from the Black Death to Avian Flu【電子書籍】[ Philip Alcabes ]

Deaths from epidemic disease are rare in the developed world, yet in our technically and medically advanced society, an ever-present risk of disease has created an industry out of fear.

As Philip Alcabes persuasively argues in Dread, our anxieties about epidemics often stray from the facts on the ground. In a fascinating exploration of the social and cultural history of epidemics, Alcabes delivers a different narrative of disease-one that requires that we reexamine our choice of enemies, and carefully consider the potential motivation of epidemic alarm-bells to further medical, moral, or political campaigns.

The Worrying Wave The Profound Transformation of Youth and Its Impact on Mental Health Epidemics【電子書籍】[ Rozmarie Jones ]

"The Worrying Wave: The Profound Transformation of Youth and Its Impact on Mental Health Epidemics" is an absorbing exploration into the mental health crisis facing today's youth. It skillfully charts the turbulent waters of modern adolescence, exposing the significant shifts reshaping the landscape of youth mental health through engaging insights and a reader-friendly approach.

The author dives deep into the increasing prevalence of depression, anxiety, and loneliness among young people, attributing these trends to societal pressures, deep digital engagement, and altered social dynamics. It confronts the stark reality that our children are caught in a surge of psychological distress, molded by a society where digital communication often replaces face-to-face interactions.

This book investigates the era of digital predominance that began in the late 2000s, illustrating how this period has fostered social comparison, diminished attention spans, and a sense of hyperconnectivity that ironically leads to isolation. "The Worrying Wave" provides thorough analysis into why today's youth feel more overwhelmed than ever, dissecting the devastating impact of these shifts on individuals and communities throughout.

Beyond diagnosing these issues, the book offers hope by presenting practical strategies for parents, educators, and policymakers to reclaim the narrative of youth development and forge paths toward a more connected and healthy future. It recommends essential steps to mitigate damage and guide our youth towards a life marked by genuine connections and resilience instead of anxiety and detachment.

"The Worrying Wave" is a catalyst for comprehension and action, grounded in meticulous research and tangible examples. It is a vital discussion point for anyone concerned about the well-being of our younger generation. For those ready to confront the challenges of the digital age and transform concern into empowerment, this book is crucial. Join in this pivotal exploration to shift the dialogue around youth mental health in our communities today.

Constructing the Outbreak Epidemics in Media & Collective Memory【電子書籍】[ Katherine A. Foss ]

When an epidemic strikes, media outlets are central to how an outbreak is framed and understood. While reporters construct stories intended to inform the public and convey essential information from doctors and politicians, news narratives also serve as historical records, capturing sentiments, responses, and fears throughout the course of the epidemic.

Constructing the Outbreak demonstrates how news reporting on epidemics communicates more than just information about pathogens; rather, prejudices, political agendas, religious beliefs, and theories of disease also shape the message. Analyzing seven epidemics spanning more than two hundred yearsーfrom Boston's smallpox epidemic and Philadelphia's yellow fever epidemic in the eighteenth century to outbreaks of diphtheria, influenza, and typhoid in the early twentieth centuryーKatherine A. Foss discusses how shifts in journalism and medicine influenced the coverage, preservation, and fictionalization of different disease outbreaks. Each case study highlights facets of this interplay, delving into topics such as colonization, tourism, war, and politics. Through this investigation into what has been preserved and forgotten in the collective memory of disease, Foss sheds light on current health care debates, like vaccine hesitancy.

Theory of the Spread of Epidemics and Movement Ecology of Animals An Interdisciplinary Approach using Methodologies of Physics and Mathematics【電子書籍】[ V. M. (Nitant) Kenkre ]

Exploiting powerful techniques from physics and mathematics, this book studies animal movement in ecology, with a focus on epidemic spread. Pulmonary syndrome is not only feared in epidemics of recent times, such as COVID-19, but is also characteristic of epidemics studied earlier such as Hantavirus. The Hantavirus is one of the book's central topics. Correlations between epidemic outbreaks and precipitation events like El Ni?o are analyzed and spatial reservoirs of infection in off-period of the epidemic, known as refugia, are studied. Predicted traveling waves of infection are successfully compared to field observations. Territoriality in scent-marking animals is presented, with parallels drawn with the theory of melting. The flocking and herding of birds and mammals are described in terms of collective excitations. For scientists interested in movement ecology and epidemic spread, this book provides effective solutions to long-standing problems.
