Advanced Euclidean Geometry【電子書籍】[ Roger A. Johnson ]

For many years, this elementary treatise on advanced Euclidean geometry has been the standard textbook in this area of classical mathematics; no other book has covered the subject quite as well. It explores the geometry of the triangle and the circle, concentrating on extensions of Euclidean theory, and examining in detail many relatively recent theorems. Several hundred theorems and corollaries are formulated and proved completely; numerous others remain unproved, to be used by students as exercises.
The author makes liberal use of circular inversion, the theory of pole and polar, and many other modern and powerful geometrical tools throughout the book. In particular, the method of "directed angles" offers not only a powerful method of proof but also furnishes the shortest and most elegant form of statement for several common theorems. This accessible text requires no more extensive preparation than high school geometry and trigonometry.

Coxeter ]

The name non-Euclidean was used by Gauss to describe a system of geometry which differs from Euclid's in its properties of parallelism. Such a system was developed independently by Bolyai in Hungary and Lobatschewsky in Russia, about 120 years ago. Another system, differing more radically from Euclid's, was suggested later by Riemann in Germany and Cayley in England. The subject was unified in 1871 by Klein, who gave the names of parabolic, hyperbolic, and elliptic to the respective systems of Euclid-Bolyai-Lobatschewsky, and Riemann-Cayley. Since then, a vast literature has accumulated.

The Fifth edition adds a new chapter, which includes a description of the two families of 'mid-lines' between two given lines, an elementary derivation of the basic formulae of spherical trigonometry and hyperbolic trigonometry, a computation of the Gaussian curvature of the elliptic and hyperbolic planes, and a proof of Schlafli's remarkable formula for the differential of the volume of a tetrahedron.

Analysis in Euclidean Space【電子書籍】[ Kenneth Hoffman ]

Developed for an introductory course in mathematical analysis at MIT, this text focuses on concepts, principles, and methods. Its introductions to real and complex analysis are closely formulated, and they constitute a natural introduction to complex function theory.
Starting with an overview of the real number system, the text presents results for subsets and functions related to Euclidean space of n dimensions. It offers a rigorous review of the fundamentals of calculus, emphasizing power series expansions and introducing the theory of complex-analytic functions. Subsequent chapters cover sequences of functions, normed linear spaces, and the Lebesgue interval. They discuss most of the basic properties of integral and measure, including a brief look at orthogonal expansions. A chapter on differentiable mappings concludes the text, addressing implicit and inverse function theorems and the change of variable theorem. Exercises appear throughout the book, and extensive supplementary material includes a bibliography, list of symbols, index, and appendix with background in elementary set theory

Euclidean Distance Matrices and Their Applications in Rigidity Theory【電子書籍】[ Abdo Y. Alfakih ]

This book offers a comprehensive and accessible exposition of Euclidean Distance Matrices (EDMs) and rigidity theory of bar-and-joint frameworks. It is based on the one-to-one correspondence between EDMs and projected Gram matrices. Accordingly the machinery of semidefinite programming is a common thread that runs throughout the book. As a result, two parallel approaches to rigidity theory are presented. The first is traditional and more intuitive approach that is based on a vector representation of point configuration. The second is based on a Gram matrix representation of point configuration.

Euclidean Distance Matrices and Their Applications in Rigidity Theory begins by establishing the necessary background needed for the rest of the book. The focus of Chapter 1 is on pertinent results from matrix theory, graph theory and convexity theory, while Chapter 2 is devoted to positive semidefinite (PSD) matrices due to the key role these matrices play in ourapproach. Chapters 3 to 7 provide detailed studies of EDMs, and in particular their various characterizations, classes, eigenvalues and geometry. Chapter 8 serves as a transitional chapter between EDMs and rigidity theory. Chapters 9 and 10 cover local and universal rigidities of bar-and-joint frameworks. This book is self-contained and should be accessible to a wide audience including students and researchers in statistics, operations research, computational biochemistry, engineering, computer science and mathematics.

Beyond Pseudo-Rotations in Pseudo-Euclidean Spaces presents for the first time a unified study of the Lorentz transformation group SO(m, n) of signature (m, n), m, n ? N, which is fully analogous to the Lorentz group SO(1, 3) of Einstein’s special theory of relativity. It is based on a novel parametric realization of pseudo-rotations by a vector-like parameter with two orientation parameters. The book is of interest to specialized researchers in the areas of algebra, geometry and mathematical physics, containing new results that suggest further exploration in these areas.

Introduces the study of generalized gyrogroups and gyrovector spaces

Develops new algebraic structures, bi-gyrogroups and bi-gyrovector spaces

Helps readers to surmount boundaries between algebra, geometry and physics

Assists readers to parametrize and describe the full set of generalized Lorentz transformations in a geometric way

Generalizes approaches from gyrogroups and gyrovector spaces to bi-gyrogroups and bi-gyrovector spaces with geometric entanglement

Elliptic Carleman Estimates and Applications to Stabilization and Controllability, Volume I Dirichlet Boundary Conditions on Euclidean Space【電子書籍】[ J?r?me Le Rousseau ]

This monograph explores applications of Carleman estimates in the study of stabilization and controllability properties of partial differential equations, including the stabilization property of the damped wave equation and the null-controllability of the heat equation. All analysis is performed in the case of open sets in the Euclidean space; a second volume will extend this treatment to Riemannian manifolds.

The first three chapters illustrate the derivation of Carleman estimates using pseudo-differential calculus with a large parameter. Continuation issues are then addressed, followed by a proof of the logarithmic stabilization of the damped wave equation by means of two alternative proofs of the resolvent estimate for the generator of a damped wave semigroup. The authors then discuss null-controllability of the heat equation, its equivalence with observability, and how the spectral inequality allows one to either construct a control function or prove the observability inequality. The final part of the book is devoted to the exposition of some necessary background material: the theory of distributions, invariance under change of variables, elliptic operators with Dirichlet data and associated semigroup, and some elements from functional analysis and semigroup theory.

The Euclidean Programme【電子書籍】[ A. C. Paseau ]

The Euclidean Programme embodies a traditional sort of epistemological foundationalism, according to which knowledge ? especially mathematical knowledge ? is obtained by deduction from self-evident axioms or first principles. Epistemologists have examined foundationalism extensively, but neglected its historically dominant Euclidean form. By contrast, this book offers a detailed examination of Euclidean foundationalism, which, following Lakatos, the authors call the Euclidean Programme. The book rationally reconstructs the programme's key principles, showing it to be an epistemological interpretation of the axiomatic method. It then compares the reconstructed programme with select historical sources: Euclid's Elements, Aristotle's Posterior Analytics, Descartes's Discourse on Method, Pascal's On the Geometric Mind and a twentieth-century account of axiomatisation. The second half of the book philosophically assesses the programme, exploring whether various areas of contemporary mathematics conform to it. The book concludes by outlining a replacement for the Euclidean Programme.

Codes on Euclidean Spheres【

Codes on Euclidean spheres are often referred to as spherical codes. They are of interest from mathematical, physical and engineering points of view. Mathematically the topic belongs to the realm of algebraic combinatorics, with close connections to number theory, geometry, combinatorial theory, and - of course - to algebraic coding theory. The connections to physics occur within areas like crystallography and nuclear physics. In engineering spherical codes are of central importance in connection with error-control in communication systems. In that context the use of spherical codes is often referred to as "coded modulation."

The book offers a first complete treatment of the mathematical theory of codes on Euclidean spheres. Many new results are published here for the first time. Engineering applications are emphasized throughout the text. The theory is illustrated by many examples. The book also contains an extensive table of best known spherical codes in dimensions 3-24, including exact constructions.

An Excursion through Elementary Mathematics, Volume II Euclidean Geometry【電子書籍】[ Antonio Caminha Muniz Neto ]

This book provides a comprehensive, in-depth overview of elementary mathematics as explored in Mathematical Olympiads around the world. It expands on topics usually encountered in high school and could even be used as preparation for a first-semester undergraduate course. This second volume covers Plane Geometry, Trigonometry, Space Geometry, Vectors in the Plane, Solids and much more.

As part of a collection, the book differs from other publications in this field by not being a mere selection of questions or a set of tips and tricks that applies to specific problems. It starts from the most basic theoretical principles, without being either too general or too axiomatic. Examples and problems are discussed only if they are helpful as applications of the theory. Propositions are proved in detail and subsequently applied to Olympic problems or to other problems at the Olympic level.

The book also explores some of the hardest problemspresented at National and International Mathematics Olympiads, as well as many essential theorems related to the content. Introduction to Non-Euclidean Geometry【電子書籍】[ Harold E. Wolfe ]

This book has been written in an attempt to provide a satisfactory textbook to be used as a basis for elementary courses in Non-Euclidean Geometry. The need for such a volume, definitely intended for classroom use and containing substantial lists of exercises, has been evident for some time. It is hoped that this one will meet the requirements of those instructors who have been teaching the subject regularly, and also that its appearance will encourage others to institute such courses. The benefits and amenities of a formal study of Non-Euclidean Geometry are generally recognized. Not only is the subject matter itself valuable and intensely fascinating, well worth the time of any student of mathematics, but there is probably no elementary course which exhibits so clearly the nature and significance of geometry and, indeed, of mathematics in general. However, a mere cursory acquaintance with the subject will not do. One must follow its development at least a little way to see how things come out, and try his hand at demonstrating propositions under circumstances such that intuition no longer serves as a guide.

In The Search For Beauty: Unravelling Non-euclidean Geometry【電子書籍】[ Voldemar Smilga ]

This is a popular book that chronicles the historical attempts to prove the fifth postulate of Euclid on parallel lines that led eventually to the creation of non-Euclidean geometry. To absorb the mathematical content of the book, the reader should be familiar with the foundations of Euclidean geometry at the high school level. But besides the mathematics, the book is also devoted to stories about the people, brilliant mathematicians starting from Pythagoras and Euclid and terminating with Gauss, Lobachevsky and Klein. For two thousand years, mathematicians tried to prove the fifth postulate (whose formulation seemed to them too complicated to be a real postulate and not a theorem, hence the title In the Search for Beauty). But in the 19th century, they realized that such proof was impossible, and this led to a revolution in mathematics and then in physics. The two final chapters are devoted to Einstein and his general relativity which revealed to us that the geometry of the world we live in is not Euclidean. Also included is an historical essay on Omar Khayyam, who was not only a poet, but also a brilliant astronomer and mathematician.

The Evolution of the Euclidean Elements A Study of the Theory of Incommensurable Magnitudes and Its Significance for Early Greek Geometry【電子書籍】[ W.R. Knorr ]

The present work has three principal objectives: (1) to fix the chronology of the development of the pre-Euclidean theory of incommensurable magnitudes beginning from the first discoveries by fifth-century Pythago reans, advancing through the achievements of Theodorus of Cyrene, Theaetetus, Archytas and Eudoxus, and culminating in the formal theory of Elements X; (2) to correlate the stages of this developing theory with the evolution of the Elements as a whole; and (3) to establish that the high standards of rigor characteristic of this evolution were intrinsic to the mathematicians' work. In this third point, we wish to counterbalance a prevalent thesis that the impulse toward mathematical rigor was purely a response to the dialecticians' critique of foundations; on the contrary, we shall see that not until Eudoxus does there appear work which may be described as purely foundational in its intent. Through the examination of these problems, the present work will either alter or set in a new light virtually every standard thesis about the fourth-century Greek geometry. I. THE PRE-EUCLIDEAN THEORY OF INCOMMENSURABLE MAGNITUDES The Euclidean theory of incommensurable magnitudes, as preserved in Book X of the Elements, is a synthetic masterwork. Yet there are detect able seams in its structure, seams revealed both through terminology and through the historical clues provided by the neo-Platonist commentator Proclus.

Hardy Operators on Euclidean Spaces and Related Topics【電子書籍】[ Shanzhen Lu ]

In many branches of mathematical analysis and mathematical physics, the Hardy operator and Hardy inequality are fundamentally important and have been intensively studied ever since the pioneer researches. This volume presents new properties of higher-dimensional Hardy operators obtained by the authors and their collaborators over the last decade. Its prime focus is on higher-dimensional Hardy operators that are based on the spherical average form.

The key motivation for this monograph is based on the fact that the Hardy operator is generally smaller than the Hardy?Littlewood maximal operator, which leads to, on the one hand, the operator norm of the Hardy operator itself being smaller than the latter. On the other hand, the former characterizing the weight function class or function spaces is greater than the latter.

Contents:

Sharp Bounds for Hardy Operators on Lebesgue Spaces

Hardy Operators on Other Function Spaces

Weighted Inequalities for Hardy Type Operators

Commutators of Hardy Operators

Hardy Operators on Heisenberg Groups and p-Adic Fields

Sharp Constants for Hausdorff q-Inequalities

Readership: This book is suitable for undergraduate and graduate students as well as researchers in theoretical and applied mathematics. Motion and Genetic Definitions in the Sixteenth-Century Euclidean Tradition【電子書籍】[ Angela Axworthy ]

A significant number of works have set forth, over the past decades, the emphasis laid by seventeenth-century mathematicians and philosophers on motion and kinematic notions in geometry. These works demonstrated the crucial role attributed in this context to genetic definitions, which state the mode of generation of geometrical objects instead of their essential properties. While the growing importance of genetic definitions in sixteenth-century commentaries on Euclid’s Elements has been underlined, the place, uses and status of motion in this geometrical tradition has however never been thoroughly and comprehensively studied. This book therefore undertakes to fill a gap in the history of early modern geometry and philosophy of mathematics by investigating the different treatments of motion and genetic definitions by seven major sixteenth-century commentators on Euclid’s Elements, from Oronce Fine (1494?1555) to Christoph Clavius (1538?1612), including Jacques Peletier (1517?1582), John Dee (1527?1608/1609) and Henry Billingsley (d. 1606), among others. By investigating the ontological and epistemological conceptions underlying the introduction and uses of kinematic notions in their interpretation of Euclidean geometry, this study displays the richness of the conceptual framework, philosophical and mathematical, inherent to the sixteenth-century Euclidean tradition and shows how it contributed to a more generalised acceptance and promotion of kinematic approaches to geometry in the early modern period.

Non-Euclidean Geometry is now recognized as an important branch of Mathematics.

Those who teach Geometry should have some knowledge of this subject, and all who are interested in Mathematics will find much to stimulate them and much for them to enjoy in the novel results and views that it presents.
This book is an attempt to give a simple and direct account of the Non-Euclidean Geometry, and one which presupposes but little knowledge of Mathematics.

The first three chapters assume a knowledge of only Plane and Solid Geometry and Trigonometry, and the entire book can be read by one who has taken the mathematical courses commonly given in our colleges.

No special claim to originality can be made for what is published here. The propositions have long been established, and in various ways. Some of the proofs may be new, but others, as already given by writers on this subject, could not be improved. These have come to me chiefly through the translations of Professor George Bruce Halsted of the University of Texas.

I am particularly indebted to my friend, Arnold B. Analytic Non-Euclidean Geometry
? Hyperbolic Analytic Geometry
? Elliptic Analytic Geometry
? Elliptic Solid Analytic Geometry
? Historical Note

The axioms of Geometry were formerly regarded as laws of thought which an intelligent mind could neither deny nor investigate. Not only were the axioms to which we have been accustomed found to agree with our experience, but it was believed that we could not reason on the supposition that any of them are not true, it has been shown, however, that it is possible to take a set of axioms, wholly or in part contradicting those of Euclid, and build up a Geometry as consistent as his.

We shall give the two most important Non-Euclidean Geometries. 1 In these the axioms and definitions are taken as in Euclid, with the exception of those relating to parallel lines. Omitting the axiom on parallels,2 we are led to three hypotheses; one of these establishes the Geometry of Euclid, while each of the other two gives us a series of propositions both interesting and useful. Indeed, as long as we can examine but a limited portion of the universe, it is not possible to prove that the system of Euclid is true, rather than one of the two Non-Euclidean Geometries which we are about to describe.

We shall adopt an arrangement which enables us to prove first the propositions common to the three Geometries, then to produce a series of propositions and the trigonometrical formulæ for each of the two Geometries which differ from that of Euclid, and by analytical methods to derive some of their most striking properties.

We do not propose to investigate directly the foundations of Geometry, nor even to point out all of the assumptions which have been made, consciously or unconsciously, in this study. Leaving undisturbed that which these Geometries have in common, we are free to fix our attention upon their differences. By a concrete exposition it may be possible to learn more of the nature of Geometry than from abstract theory alone.

This is an excellent historical and mathematical view by a renowned Italian geometer of the geometries that have risen from a rejection of Euclid's parallel postulate. Students, teachers and mathematicians will find here a ready reference source and guide to a field that has now become overwhelmingly important.
Non-Euclidean Geometry first examines the various attempts to prove Euclid's parallel postulate-by the Greeks, Arabs, and mathematicians of the Renaissance. Then, ranging through the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, it considers the forerunners and founders of non-Euclidean geometry, such as Saccheri, Lambert, Legendre, W. Bolyai, Gauss, Schweikart, Taurinus, J. Bolyai and Lobachevski. In a discussion of later developments, the author treats the work of Riemann, Helmholtz and Lie; the impossibility of proving Euclid's postulate, and similar topics. The complete text of two of the founding monographs is appended to Bonola's study: "The Science of Absolute Space" by John Bolyai and "Geometrical Researches on the Theory of Parallels" by Nicholas Lobachevski. "Firmly recommended to any scientific reader with some mathematical inclination" ー Journal of the Royal Naval Scientific Service. "Classic on the subject." ー Scientific American.

This book is the modern first treatment of experimental designs, providing a comprehensive introduction to the interrelationship between the theory of optimal designs and the theory of cubature formulas in numerical analysis. It also offers original new ideas for constructing optimal designs.

The book opens with some basics on reproducing kernels, and builds up to more advanced topics, including bounds for the number of cubature formula points, equivalence theorems for statistical optimalities, and the Sobolev Theorem for the cubature formula. It concludes with a functional analytic generalization of the above classical results.

Although it is intended for readers who are interested in recent advances in the construction theory of optimal experimental designs, the book is also useful for researchers seeking rich interactions between optimal experimental designs and various mathematical subjects such as spherical designs in combinatorics and cubature formulas in numerical analysis, both closely related to embeddings of classical finite-dimensional Banach spaces in functional analysis and Hilbert identities in elementary number theory. Moreover, it provides a novel communication platform for “design theorists” in a wide variety of research fields.

"Golden" Non-euclidean Geometry, The: Hilbert's Fourth Problem, "Golden" Dynamical Systems, And The Fine-structure Constant【電子書籍】[ Alexey Stakhov ]

This unique book overturns our ideas about non-Euclidean geometry and the fine-structure constant, and attempts to solve long-standing mathematical problems. It describes a general theory of 'recursive' hyperbolic functions based on the 'Mathematics of Harmony,' and the 'golden,' 'silver,' and other 'metallic' proportions. Then, these theories are used to derive an original solution to Hilbert's Fourth Problem for hyperbolic and spherical geometries. On this journey, the book describes the 'golden' qualitative theory of dynamical systems based on 'metallic' proportions. Finally, it presents a solution to a Millennium Problem by developing the Fibonacci special theory of relativity as an original physical-mathematical solution for the fine-structure constant. It is intended for a wide audience who are interested in the history of mathematics, non-Euclidean geometry, Hilbert's mathematical problems, dynamical systems, and Millennium Problems.See Press Release: Application of the mathematics of harmony - Golden non-Euclidean geometry in modern math

Taxicab Geometry An Adventure in Non-Euclidean Geometry【電子書籍】[ Eugene F. Krause ]

This entertaining, stimulating textbook offers anyone familiar with Euclidean geometry ー undergraduate math students, advanced high school students, and puzzle fans of any age ー an opportunity to explore taxicab geometry, a simple, non-Euclidean system that helps put Euclidean geometry in sharper perspective.
In taxicab geometry, the shortest distance between two points is not a straight line. Distance is not measured as the crow flies, but as a taxicab travels the "grid" of the city street, from block to block, vertically and horizontally, until the destination is reached. Because of this non-Euclidean method of measuring distance, some familiar geometric figures are transmitted: for example, circles become squares.
However, taxicab geometry has important practical applications. As Professor Krause points out, "While Euclidean geometry appears to be a good model of the 'natural' world, taxicab geometry is a better model of the artificial urban world that man has built."
As a result, the book is replete with practical applications of this non-Euclidean system to urban geometry and urban planning ー from deciding the optimum location for a factory or a phone booth, to determining the most efficient routes for a mass transit system.
The underlying emphasis throughout this unique, challenging textbook is on how mathematicians think, and how they apply an apparently theoretical system to the solution of real-world problems.
