Goodnight Children, Everywhere Voices of Evacuees【電子書籍】[ Monica B Morris ]

For the many children torn from their families, taken miles from home and placed with strangers, the evacuation at the outbreak of the Second World War was a life-changing experience. In Goodnight Children, Everywhere, men and women who were children at the time recall their poignant memories of being labelled, lined up and taken away. Their parents, urged by the government not to see the children off on the buses and trains, had no assurance that they would ever see their sons and daughters again. No lives were lost and no one was injured. Not so considered was the psychological wellbeing of these suddenly dislocated children. Some children were advantaged by the dramatic change in their lives; others, separated from all they knew and loved, suffered unendurable heartbreak. This is their story.

Fall-out from Fukushima Nuclear Evacuees Seeking Compensation and Legal Protection After the Triple Meltdown【電子書籍】[ Giulia de Togni ]

This book shows how the Fukushima plaintiffs have challenged narratives of safety and risk containment produced by TEPCO and the Japanese government through offering new empirical data on risk perceptions and life choices of some nuclear evacuees.

Considering the Fukushima evacuees’ disappearance from public discourse in Japan, the book engages with theoretical writings on risk, neoliberal governmentality and citizen science. Chapters draw on a wide range of anthropologically-related methodologies including socio-linguistics, participant observation, and qualitative interviews. Themes of self-governance, resistance, gender, kinship, class and social change surface throughout, setting the Fukushima experience in a broad historical, social, and comparative context. This is the first ethnographic account of the Fukushima litigation and the first extensive qualitative study documenting the worldviews and living conditions of nuclear evacuees who moved outside Fukushima Prefecture, with a particular focus on underrepresented groups (single mothers, elderly and disabled evacuees). The history of industrial disasters and the role of citizens in shaping environmental policy in Japan is also evaluated.

Fall-out from Fukushima sets out to be a manifesto for understanding and supporting post-nuclear disaster societies, and will appeal to students and scholars of social, legal, and linguistic anthropology, science and technology studies, as well as Japanese studies.

Evacuees and Crabapple Trees Stories of war, love, family and the countryside from one of Britain’s best-loved saga authors【電子書籍】[ Sheila Newberry ]

At the outbreak of World War II, when Sheila was just seven years old, her parents moved the family out of their native London to stay with an aunt and uncle in Suffolk. To a little girl country life was strange at first, and in stark contrast to the city, where the Battle of Britain was raging. From roaming the fields and learning the names of all of the wildflowers, to spending time with her grandparents, proprietors of a local pub, it was what childhood dreams were made of. When the bombing died down, the family moved back to London, but Sheila would later return to the countryside when she, her husband John and their children arrived at Crabapple Cottage, their new home in Kent. Over the next few years, they had many adventures as they adapted to the seasonal rhythms of country life. Sheila would eventually move back to Suffolk, via a stint in a village shop in the West Country, where she lived out her days.

Sheila Newberry spent her whole life writing but it was not until she was in her 80s that she became one of the country's best-loved saga authors. Divided into five sections of Sheila's life - from 1939 until the 90s - Knee Deep in Plums gives readers a wonderful snapshot of her life, from her time as an evacuee to meeting John and falling in love, to eventually becoming a mother to nine and grandmother to twenty-two. Throughout all of this Sheila was writing stories - her first novels as a child, written in purple ink, and a spell writing the local pantomime, before eventually arriving at the heartwarming novels her readers love to this day.

With a foreword by bestselling saga author, Rosie Goodwin.

Oceans Apart Stories of Overseas Evacuees in World War Two【電子書籍】[ Penny Starns ]

From May 1940, the Children's Overseas Reception Board began to move children to Australia, South Africa, Canada and New Zealand for their own safety during the Second World War. The scheme was extremely popular, and over 200,000 applications were made within just four months, while thousands of children were also sent to be privately evacuated overseas. The 'sea-vacs', as they became known, had a variety of experiences.

After weeks at sea, they began new lives thousands of miles away. Letters home took up to twelve weeks to reach their destination, and many children were totally cut off from their families in the UK. While most were well cared for, others found their time abroad a miserable, difficult or frightening experience as they encountered homesickness, prejudice and even abuse.

Using a range of primary source material, including diaries, letters and interviews, Penny Starns reveals in heart-breaking detail the unique and personal experiences of sea-vacs, as well as their surprising influence on international wartime policy in their power to elicit international sympathy and financial support for the British war effort.

Guernsey Evacuees The Forgotten Evacuees of the Second World War【電子書籍】[ Gillian Mawson ]

In June 1940, 17,000 people fled Guernsey to England, including 5,000 school children with their teachers and 500 mothers as 'helpers'. The Channel Islands were occupied on 30 June - the only part of British territory that was occupied by Nazi forces during the Second World War. Most evacuees were transported to smoky industrial towns in Northern England - an environment so very different to their rural island. For five years they made new lives in towns where the local accent was often confusing, but for most, the generosity shown to them was astounding. They received assistance from Canada and the USA - one Guernsey school was 'sponsored' by wealthy Americans such as Eleanor Roosevelt and Hollywood stars. From May 1945, the evacuees began to return home, although many decided to remain in England. Wartime bonds were forged between Guernsey and Northern England that were so strong, they still exist today.

Evacuees Children's Lives on the WW2 Home Front【電子書籍】[ Gillian Mawson ]

This oral history shares firsthand accounts of Britain’s child evacuees who were sent to live away from home at the outbreak of WWII.

On the outbreak of the Second World War, Britain initiated Operation Pied Piper, evacuating more than three million civilians out of areas considered prime targets for bombing. It was the largest ever transportation of people across Britain, and most of those moved to safety in the countryside were schoolchildren.

Social historian Gillian Mawson has spent years collecting the stories of former evacuees. This book includes personal memories from more than 100 child evacuees, as well as their teachers and foster parents. Told in their own words, these accounts reveal what it was like to settle into a new home with strangers, often staying for years. While many enjoyed life in the countryside, some escaping inner-city poverty, others endured ill-treatment and homesickness.

World War II Camps in Jamaica Evacuees, Refugees, Internees, Prisoners of War【電子書籍】[ Suzanne Francis-Brown ]

Between 1939 and 1947, the Caribbean island of Jamaica ? then a British colony ? was haven or detention centre for thousands of displaced Europeans; an often under-recognized contribution to the Allied war effort. A civilian camp accommodated evacuees from Gibraltar and, belatedly, provided sanctuary for groups of mainly Jewish refugees. Others who had fled Europe ahead of looming fascist threats would be interned in military detention camps whose populations were swollen by German and Italian civilians from several British West African colonies, co-mingled for convenience with hundreds of German and Italian merchant mariners captured at sea during the early months of the war.

World War II Camps in Jamaica disentangles the conditions under which these various populations were held, drawing on primary records, personal accounts and media coverage; noting differences and similarities in their management; considering the camps and their populations within the local context; and considering the extent of interface and interaction that ensued despite official efforts to keep the incoming populations separate and transitory.

Commander's Guide to Support Operations Among Weaponized Displaced Persons, Refugees, and Evacuees, Purposeful Introduction of Biologically Infected Persons or CBRNE Casualties, WMD Threat at Camps【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

This excellent report has been professionally converted for accurate flowing-text e-book format reproduction. The use of chemical and biological weapons on the battlefields of history is not a new phenomenon. Although this practice is contrary to international treaties and customs, it has not precluded the use of these weapons by state and non-state actors against military, political, or civilian targets. Chemical and biological weapons use during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s and the use of chemical weapons in Syria in 2013 demonstrate that our collective security is threatened by actors willing to defy the international community. The threat of chemical and biological weapons use is increased as these are relatively inexpensive to produce and can be delivered by a variety of methods, making them an asymmetric threat of catastrophic potential. The psychological, health, and logistical implications of displaced persons fleeing a real or perceived chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and enhanced conventional weapons (CBRNE) environment will create complex mission command and support requirements requiring innovative and agile responses.

Responding to a crisis of the magnitude associated with the purposeful introduction of CBRNE casualties into a displaced person, refugee, and evacuee (DPRE) environment would almost certainly require military forces ー particularly U.S. military forces ー with the skills necessary to rapidly deploy for consequence management, and operate in what promises to be a very complex and chaotic environment. The ability to provide streamlined and integrated CBRNE and medical capabilities will be essential. Military forces will need to create the space necessary for aid agencies to operate and provide a synchronized interagency and intergovernmental response. Time between detection, analysis, understanding, and deployment could be very short and predeployment training and planning timelines will be limited.

Chapter 1 - Medical Considerations for Weaponized Attacks on Displaced Persons, Refugees, and Evacuees * Chapter 2 - Protection Through Prevention: Defending At-Risk Displaced Person Populations Against Disease * Chapter 3 - Risk, Prevention, and Mitigation of Infected Displaced Persons * Chapter 4 - Preventing Slow Extinction: Combating the Use of Weaponized Displaced Persons, Refugees, and Evacuees to Inflict Generational Genocide * Chapter 5 - Weaponized Displaced Persons, Refugees, and Evacuees: A Potential Threat to the Army's Ethical Climate and Organizational Culture * Chapter 6 - Weapons of Mass Destruction and the Humanitarian Aid Response: An All Hands Approach to a Global Threat * Chapter 7 - Understanding Organizational Culture: Nongovernmental Organization and Communication Barriers * Chapter 8 - The Tool Kit: Information Dissemination in a Weaponized Displaced Persons Relief Effort * Chapter 9 - Displaced Persons Camps and the Potential for Weaponized Disease Attacks * Chapter 10 - Mitigating Risks of Deliberate Biological Contamination * Chapter 11 - Security Considerations: Principals to Consider While Handling Displaced Persons, Refugees, and Evacuees in a Weapons of Mass Destruction-Affected Environment * Chapter 12 - Minimum Standards of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene for a Displaced Person, Refugee, and Evacuee Camp and Their Role in Reducing or Preventing the Spread of Infectious Diseases * Chapter 13 - Integrating Female Engagement Teams into Displaced Persons, Refugees, and Evacuees Operations * Chapter 14 - Leadership: A Cure for Fear and Uncertainty

Evacuees Evacuation in Wartime Britain 1939-1945【電子書籍】[ Mike Brown ]

As the last days of peace ebbed away in 1939 and the outbreak of the Second World War appeared inevitable, a massive exodus took place in Britain: nearly two million civilians, most of them children, were taken from the cities, industrial towns and ports to the relative safety of the British countryside.

For many of these bewildered children this was the first time away from their families or even their own home town. But for overseas British nationals evacuacted to the mother country from the Channel Islands and Gibraltar, the shock of the upheaval was great indeed. Carrying pitifully few belongings, they had no idea where they were being sent - for many it was the beginning of a great adventure, for some a nightmare.

Mike Brown combines factual narrative with contemporary eyewitness accounts and oral history extracts to investigate the phenomenon of evacuation in Britain during the Second World War.

Illustrated with a variety of contemporary photographs and ephemera, Evacuees provides a fascinating, amusing and sometimes disturbing glimpse of how children and adults coped with the trials and tribulations of evacuation. It will appeal to anyone who is interested in reading about life on the Home Front during the Second World War, and especially to anyone who was an evacuee.

Britain's Wartime Evacuees The People, Places and Stories of the Evacuations Told Through the Accounts of Those Who Were There【電子書籍】[ Gillian Mawson ]

With the declaration of war in September 1939, the Government Evacuation Scheme was implemented, in which almost one and a half million civilians, mostly children, were evacuated from the British cities thought most likely to be the targets of aerial bombing. The fear of invasion the following year resulted in another mass evacuation from the coastal towns.Hundreds of thousands of school children, and mothers with babies and infants, were removed from their homes and families, and sent to live with strangers in distant rural areas and to entirely unfamiliar environments. Some children were also sent to countries of the Commonwealth, such as Canada and Australia. The evacuations had an enormous impact upon millions of individuals, both those that were evacuated and those that had to accommodate and care for the displaced multitude.Over the course of eight years research Gillian Mawson has interviewed hundreds of evacuees from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Families have also allowed her access to the testimony of those who have passed away. Coupled with the extensive newspaper coverage of the day and official documents Britains Wartime Evacuees provides not just a comprehensive study of the evacuations, but also relates some of the most moving and emotive stories of the Second World War.

Evacuees Growing Up in Wartime Britain【電子書籍】[ Dr Geoffrey Lee Williams ]

In 1939, at the age of nine Geoffrey Lee Williams and his twin brother Alan felt ready for the war but were not ready for its consequences. The government had long planned the mass evacuation of children, under the code-name 'Pied Piper', but the details were kept secret from local authorities and the population at large. The first wave left British cities on 1 September 1939 and by 3 September, a few hours before war was officially declared, it is estimated that millions of women and children had already been allocated to the planned reception areas or had been privately evacuated. Geoffrey and Alan were among them. This book begins with Geoffrey and Alan's first evacuation to Hartley in Kent and then goes on to record their impressions of their three subsequent evacuations and their adventures, or misadventures, during the Battle of Britain, the London Blitz, D-Day and the V1 and V2 raids until the end of the war in 1945. This fascinating book conveys not only their desire, as children, to be involved in and contribute to the war effort but also their growing awareness of the cataclysmic events unfolding around them between 1939 and 1945, which subsequently shaped the future interests and careers of both the author and his brother Alan.

Midhurst WW2 Memoirs: The Evacuee Story【電子書籍】[ Peter H Sydenham ]

The memoirs series of books, spanning from up to, and including WW2, cover the history of the Midhurst Rural District MRD, a beautiful part of West Sussex in England. They are intended to be a living research resource for others to pick up from if they seek to delve deeper, or to learn of their heritage.

They began with my children, and then their children, asking me to help them with their school work on ‘What did your father (or grandfather) do in WW2?’ I only had a superficial child’s knowledge of my formative years as an evacuee taken to the Midhurst. That was not good enough!

Writing about my own evacuation experience would barely cover 80 pages! It would not contribute much of general interest unless the back stories were also present. It led me to revealing and researching the stories behind my own experiences of that time. Fascinating!

This book is the companion guide to the Midhurst WW2 Memoirs series of books. It gives the main points of my own story presented in Midhurst in 2014 to the Midhurst Society, and then describes the follow-on from that event as the books are born.

All books in the series are made available as Print on Demand on-line editions, along with their e-book equivalents.
