Transnational Lives Expatriates in Indonesia【電子書籍】[ Anne-Meike Fechter ]

Privileged migrants, such as expatriates living abroad, are typically associated with lives of luxury in exotic locations. This fascinating and in-depth study reveals a more complex reality. By focusing on corporate expatriates the author provides one of the first book length studies on 'transnationalism from above'. The book draws on the author's extended research among the expatriate community in Jakarta, Indonesia. The findings, which relate to expatriate communities worldwide, provide a nuanced analysis of current trends among a globally mobile workforce. While acknowledging the potentially empowering impact of transnationalism, the author challenges current paradigms by arguing that the study of elite migration shows that transnational lives do not always entail fluid identities but the maintenance of boundaries - of body, race and gender. The rich ethnographic data adds a critical dimension to studies of migration and transnationalism, filling a distinct gap in terms of theory and ethnography. Written in an engaging and accessible style the book will be of interest to academics and students, particularly in anthropology, migration studies and human geography.

Diary of an Expat in Singapore【電子書籍】[ Jennifer Gargiulo ]

This hilarious new book records the tongue-in-cheek journey of an expat in Singapore, told through vignettes, snapshots and Top 10 lists: “10 sure signs you’re in a Singapore taxi”; “Things first-time visitors to Singapore say”; “10 signs you’ve overstayed”; “Politically-incorrect expat profiling by nationality”; and many more. Based on the author Jennifer Gargiulo’s popular blog of the same name, Diary of an Expat in Singapore packs in a wealth of quirky observations, witty one-liners, and laugh-out-loud misunderstandings as the author tries to adjust to life in a strange new land and raise two kids while at it. Marvel as Jennifer enlists the help of her young son, Alexander (who learns Chinese at school), to find out what her hairdressers are saying about her at the salon! Expats will share many of the experiences of the author told in this book, but few will have heard them told with more humour and flair. And Singaporeans will also find much to enjoy and laugh over, when local customs and foibles are seen anew through the author’s eyes.

An American Girl in London 120 Nourishing Recipes for Your Family from a Californian Expat: A Cookbook【電子書籍】[ Marissa Hermer ]

Ladies of London star Marissa Hermer grew up in southern California picking avocados from her grandmother’s tree. Weekends meant trips to the Newport Beach pier for fresh fish and bowls of granola baked in the sunny family kitchen. But everything changed when Marissa moved to London to be with the love of her life, a British restaurateur who prefers meat and potatoes to guacamole. A classic Sunday roast replaced her beachside BBQ, and sticky toffee pudding elbowed out the s’mores. But as she made her home in England and started a family of her own, Marissa didn’t want to lose her roots. She began incorporating a bit of California into her recipes, creating homey British favorites with a brighter twist.

Drawing inspiration from both her American upbringing and British cuisine, the 120 recipes in An American Girl in London show you how to cook delicious, nourishing, family-friendly fare that earns raves on both sides of the pond. From a flavorful sourdough bread and butter pudding to a rich mushroom and tarragon pie, Marissa shows you how to amp up the flavors of home to keep you, your family, and friends feeling fit, loved, and completely nourished. While her home kitchen might not be the most traditional, it’s a match made in transatlantic heaven.

Misfit in Hell to Heaven Expat Lessons from a Dark Near-Death Experience and How to Avoid Hell in the Afterlife【電子書籍】[ M.K. McDaniel ]

Placed on a ventilator for lung failure in 1999, M.K. McDaniel fought for her life in a drug-induced coma for three weeks. Misfit In Hell To Heaven Expat is based on a story of M.K.'s experiences before, during, and after a Dark Near-Death Experience. Her family waited and prayed, totally unaware of the horrors M.K. was bravely facing and miserably enduring in a seemingly eternal hell, culminating in her eventual glimpse of heaven and chat with her deceased fianc?. But M.K. still had work to do on Earth. During her lengthy recovery, as M.K. reflected on the purpose of her experiences in the Afterlife, she recalled the tribulations of her family ancestors and their courage to survive. If they could overcome their overwhelming obstacles, then so could she. As memories of former earthly hellish traumas surfaced and seemed to parallel her actual hell experiences, M.K. sought out others with the same story. She eventually found solace, hope, and understanding at the International Association of Near-Death Studies meetings in Seattle. IANDS offered insights, camaraderie, and joy she had nearly forgotten to be possible in this life. Uplifting, humorous, chilling, and engrossing, Misfit In Hell To Heaven Expat takes the reader by the hand to safely explore our human and otherworldly selves. Its gentle message will help the reader find their way along the bumpy, earthly road to eternity.

Expat in China A Family Adventure【電子書籍】[ Greg Rhodes ]

At age 40, Greg and Heidi Rhodes kept a rash promise to each other made 17 years earlier, when the naive, mortgage-free expats swore to return to China with their own children. Arriving back in the Middle Kingdom in 2005, they were surprised to find their former home city, Chengdu, unrecognizable. Familiar landmarks and expectations had been swept away by China's rushing tide of progress, replaced by glass skyscrapers, McDonald's restaurants, and a frenetic scramble to get ahead. Armed with a scant few remembered phrases of Chinese, two unsuspecting offspring, and (sometimes) healthy curiosity, the Rhodes set about learning to navigate their city, and their family, on brand-new terms. Join the family as they toast China with drunken college students and battle a Buddhist monk with inflatable baseball bats. Always honest, often funny and at times poignant, Expat in China tells of a year filled with surprises, challenges, and adventures.

Ze Germans An expat's guide to living in Germany【電子書籍】[ fadi gaziri ]

As a British national living in Germany, Fadi did not find it easy to adapt to the German way of life at first. He constantly bemoaned their lack of a sense of humour, the overly-direct approach; the lack of tact, the non-existence of customer-service, the staggering bureaucracy and many other aspects of everyday life one faces in the Bundesrepublik. However, where many of us expats would have packed our stuff and left, Fadi decided to examine things that were bothering him, and find out why. Tired of banging his head against a wall he quietly decided to write a book. "It was an epiphany. All of a sudden if I was frustrated with something, instead of venting it at other people, I wrote it down on a piece of paper - it was like meditating". It turned out that Fadi was very frustrated indeed ? 300 pages of it. His style pays homage to Bill Bryson; written with a light anecdotal tone, often mixed in with a dollop of self-mockery, giving a vivid account of German society as a whole. The Difference At a glance, this book seems like any other satirical guide to Germany, of which there are aplenty. However, after reading a portion of it we discover that the author goes much deeper into the 'source of the problem', linking different points to socio-economical, cultural, and other aspects of German life, thus helping the reader to really understand the mentality in this country. " I had been planning for a long time to write a story, or a series of blogs about my experience in Germany, but never got round to it. One fine day I realised that it's now or never. I had come to a conclusion that I myself was mutating into a German, and if I'd wait any longer, I would not be able to write this book at all".

West Meets East in Kazakhstan Life in and Around Almaty, Kazakhstan, in the 1990'S from the Perspective of an American Expat【電子書籍】[ Thomas E. Johnson ]

The author gained considerable experience of working in countries in the Soviet sphere in the 1980sYugoslavia, Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Hungarybut this did little to prepare him for a long-term stint in Kazakhstan, commencing at the outset of 1993. If his eyes were opened wide in Belgrade, Warsaw, Prague, and Budapest, they were bug-eyed in Almaty, Kazakhstan. There he keenly experienced the harshness and wonders of post-Soviet Kazakhstan. The good news is that Tom Johnson wrote a series of articles for a local English language newspaper, The Almaty Herald, detailing his observations about life in and around Almaty in the 1990s from the perspective of an American expatriate. West Meets East in Kazakhstan is based on those articles, to which the author has added substantial new material. With wry humor, a positive attitude, and an easy-to-read writing style, the author recounts the gentle and not-so-gentle culture shock that he experienced. It is difficult to describe the books content. Each chapter stands by itself and might be devoted to such topics as the following: the heavy weight of documentation required by the bureaucracy, the peculiar habit of carrying flowers with the wet ends up and the flowers down, the lack of public gathering places, or the outlandish nature of goodbye parties for departing expatriates. Several chapters describe the authors forages into the countryside to visit lakes, waterfalls, burial mounds, and singing dunes. West Meets East in Kazakhstan makes a good read for anyone interested in life and living conditions in Kazakhstan, as well as the former Soviet Union. Foreigners who lived or worked in Kazakhstan during the period when the Communist economy was collapsing and before the market economy took root should particularly enjoy the book.

Tales from the Expat Harem Foreign Women in Modern Turkey【

As the Western world struggles to comprehend the paradoxes of modern Turkey, Tales from the Expat Harem reveals its most personal nuances. This illuminating anthology provides a window into the country from the perspective of thirty-two expatriates from seven different nations-artists, entrepreneurs, Peace Corps volunteers, archaeologists, missionaries, and others-who established lives in Turkey for work, love, or adventure.

Through narrative essays covering the last four decades, these diverse women unveil the mystique of the "Orient,” describe religious conflict, embrace cultural discovery, and maneuver familial traditions, customs, and responsibilities. Poignant, humorous, and transcendent, the essays take readers to weddings and workplaces, down cobbled Byzantine streets, into boisterous bazaars along the Silk Road, and deep into the feminine stronghold of steamy Ottoman bathhouses. The outcome is a stunning collection of voices from women suspended between two homes as they redefine their identities and reshape their worldviews.

Buffalo & Breadfruit Tales of an Unwary Expat in Malaysia【電子書籍】[ Martin Bradley ]

As the writer Martin Bradley unwittingly discovers, there is nothing quite like uprooting yourself from your home of fifty-four years in suburban, temperate England and transplanting yourself into rural, equatorial Malaysia. Bradley attempts to make a new life for himself in provincial Malaysia, living with poisonous snakes, chicken-killing civet cats, and water buffalo intent on chomping his delicate mango shoots and trampling the saplings he has nurtured for many weeks. The idyll he hopes to find is far from idyllic, his stoicism far from stoic and his temper far from temperate. Follow the hapless author as he undertakes a personal seven-year journey into a new religion that he is not suited to, a love affair which should never have been and a culture that requires the patience of the saint he is not. It is a humorous seven-year battle with country living, country people and the whole concept of a rural retreat from which, in the end, he must retreat.
