Safety is No AccidentーFrom 'V' Bombers to Concorde A Flight Test Engineer's Story【電子書籍】[ John R. W. Smith ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

A behind-the-scenes look at the aeronautical engineers who keep the skies safe.

Many are surprised to learn that flying is, statistically, the safest means of transportation. Even less well known is the crucial role that flight test observers and engineers play in ensuring that level of safety. In this book, one of them recounts his experience as an aeronautical engineer working in partnership with test pilots, painting a vivid portrait of his flight-testing career from the 1960s to early 1980s at Avro and the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

During the author’s time at Avro, he flew on the development and certification test flights of the Avro 748, 748MF, Shackletons, Nimrod, and Handley-Page Victor tanker. In the CAA, his role turned to regulation, making flight test assessments of manufacturer’s prototypes and production aircraft, to check compliance with the CAA’s flight safety requirements. The scope ranged from single-engine light aircraft to large civil transport aircraft. It involved frequent visits to foreign manufacturers and also included his participation in the CAA’s Concorde certification flight test program.

Advancements in the understanding of aerodynamics and an increasingly professional approach to risk management improved safety, but flight testing still involves risk, and several of the author’s close friends and colleagues died in flight test accidents during this period. It is because of the courage and expertise of such people that millions of flights now touch down safely each year.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 2,112円

Flight Testing Analysis of the Spin Dynamics of a Single?Engine Low?Wing Aeroplane【電子書籍】[ Steffen Haakon Schrader ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

As spinning is still involved in around 60% of all aircraft accidents (BFU, 1985 and Belcastro, 2009), this aerodynamic phenomenon is still not fully understood. As U.S. and European Certification Specifications do not require recoveries from fully developed spins of Normal Category aeroplanes, certification test flights will not discover aeroplane mass and centre of gravity combinations which may result in unrecoverable spins.

This book aims to contribute to a better understanding of the spin phenomenon through investigating the spin regime for normal, utility and aerobatic aircraft, and to explain what happens to the aircraft in terms of the aerodynamics, flight mechanics and the aircraft stability. The approach used is to vary the main geometric parameters such as the centre of gravity position and the aeroplane’s mass across the flight envelope, and to investigate the subsequent effect on the main spin characteristic parameters such as the angle of attack, pitch angle, sideslip angle, rotational rates, and recovery time.

First of all, a literature review sums up the range of technical aspects that affect the problem of spinning. It reviews the experimental measurement techniques used, theoretical methods developed and flight test results obtained by previous researchers. The published results have been studied to extract the effect on spinning of aircraft geometry, control surface effectiveness, flight operational parameters and atmospheric effects. Consideration is also made of the influence on human performance of spinning, the current spin regulations and the available training material for pilots.

A conventional-geometry, single-engine low-wing aeroplane, the basic trainer Fuji FA-200-160, has been instrumented with a proven digital flight measurement system and 27 spins have been systematically conducted inside and outside the certified flight envelope. The accuracy of the flight measurements is ensured through effective calibration, and the choice of sensors has varied through the study, with earlier sensors suffering from more drift than the current sensors (Belcastro, 2009 and Schrader, 2013).

In-flight parameter data collected includes left and right wing α and β-angles, roll-pitch-yaw angles and corresponding rates, all control surface deflections, vertical speeds, altitude losses and the aeroplane’s accelerations in all three directions.

Such data have been statistically analysed. The pitch behaviour has been mathematically modelled on the basis of the gathered flight test data.

Nine observations have been proposed. These mainly cover the effects of centre of gravity and aircraft mass variations on spin characteristic behaviour. They have all been proven as true through the results of this thesis. The final observation concerns the generalisation of the Fuji results, to the spin behaviour of other aircraft in the same category.

These observations can be used to improve flight test programmes, aircraft design processes, flight training materials and hence contribute strongly to better flight safety.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 12,154円

Flight Test: the Discipline A Comprehensive Exploration of the Basic Tenets of Flight Test as a Discipline and Profession.【電子書籍】[ Peter Tyson ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

Why Flight Test? Since the Wright Brothers first flew at Kitty Hawk, aerodynamicists, engineers, and mathematicians have conquered the equations of flight. So, we should be able to know everything from wind tunnels, simulation, and computation, right? No. The dynamics of flight require in air test. It is impossible to replicate all the flight conditions on the ground. Or there may be specific flight conditions on the ground. Or there may be specific flight regimes that are poorly defined or too complex to model, such as the flow field around an aircraft carrier. But if we must test in flight, how can we do that safely, efficiently, and effectively? This book describes the basic principles and concepts of flight test. Beginning with the questions and goals of flight test, and showing the parallel between flight test engineering and the Scientific Method, FLIGHT TEST: THE DISCIPLINE covers all the steps of test planning, execution, and reporting. Whether you are a professional flight test engineer or a novice, an aviation buff, or aircrew, you will enjoy the discussion in this book and understand how flight test is a crucial part of man's development of flight. The authors of this book represent vast experience within US Naval Aviation flight test. They bring their array of knowledge and skill to any test team, showing the fundamentals of flight test and most importantly, the "Why?" of what we do in flight test. This book was written to complement the FLIGHT TEST: THE DISCIPLINE training course presented by AVIAN at www.avian.com and Peter Tyson at www.phtyson.com
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 747円

Boeing's Starliner CST-100 Human Spacecraft for ISS Space Station Missions, Orbital Flight Test (OFT), NASA Commercial Crew Program: American Rockets, American Spacecraft, American Soil【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

NASA's Commercial Crew Program is working with the American aerospace industry as companies develop and operate a new generation of spacecraft and launch systems capable of carrying crews to low-Earth orbit and the International Space Station. Commercial transportation to and from the station will provide expanded utility, additional research time and broader opportunities for discovery on the orbiting laboratory. The station is a critical testbed for NASA to understand and overcome the challenges of long-duration spaceflight. As commercial companies focus on providing human transportation services to and from low-Earth orbit, NASA is freed up to focus on building spacecraft and rockets for deep space missions.

The first launch of Boeing's CST-100 Starliner to the International Space Station will be an uncrewed test flight. Even without a crew, Starliner will attempt to dock to the station to prove out its autonomous mission capability. The other mission objectives are intended to demonstrate all of Starliner's systems and capabilities, except for those requiring a human onboard to test. Boeing's CST-100 Starliner is a 21st century human space transportation platform optimized for missions to low Earth orbit. In its design, Boeing leveraged decades of heritage in human spaceflight as well as incorporated new technologies to make a safe and reliable vehicle. Global Hawk Systems Engineering Case Study - UAV Drone Technical Information, Program History, Development and Production, Flight Testing - Unmanned Aerial System (UAS)【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

This is one of a series of systems engineering case studies prepared by the Air Force Center for Systems Engineering. This case study analyzes the Global Hawk Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The Global Hawk is an advanced intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance air system composed of a high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned air vehicle (UAV) and a common ground segment (CGS) for command, control, and data collection. Its primary mission is to provide overt, continuous, long-endurance, all-weather, day/night, and near-real-time, wide-area reconnaissance and surveillance. The air vehicle is coupled with an integrated ground-based Mission Control Element (MCE) and Launch and Recovery Element (LRE) that monitors autonomous flight and facilitates-aided control of the air vehicle, when required. The Global Hawk system consists of the aircraft, payloads, data links, ground stations, and logistics support package. The ground stations have the ability to provide command and control (C2) of up to three vehicles and at least one air vehicle payload from a single ground station.

The study provides a wealth of technical information about the aircraft and its complex history.

The Department of Defense is exponentially increasing the acquisition of joint complex systems that deliver needed capabilities demanded by our warfighter. Systems engineering is the technical and technical management process that focuses explicitly on delivering and sustaining robust, high-quality, affordable solutions. The Air Force leadership has collectively stated the need to mature a sound systems engineering process throughout the Air Force. Gaining an understanding of the past and distilling learning principles that are then shared with others through our formal education and practitioner support are critical to achieving continuous improvement.

These cases support academic instruction on SE within military service academies, civilian and military graduate schools, industry continuing education programs, and those practicing SE in the field. Each of the case studies is comprised of elements of success as well as examples of SE decisions that, in hindsight, were not optimal. Both types of examples are useful for learning. Along with discovering historical facts, we have conducted key interviews with program managers and chief engineers, both within the government and those working for the various prime and subcontractors. From this information, we have concluded that the discipline needed to implement SE and the political and acquisition environment surrounding programs continue to challenge our ability to provide balanced technical solutions.

Chapter 1. Contrails over the Mojave The Golden Age of Jet Flight Testing at Edwards Air Force Base【電子書籍】[ George J Marrett ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

In Contrails over the Mojave George Marrett takes off where Tom Wolfe’s The Right Stuff ended in 1963. Marrett started the Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards AFB only two weeks after the school’s commander, Col. Chuck Yeager, ejected from a Lockheed NF-104 trying to set a world altitude record. He describes life as a space cadet experiencing 15 Gs in a human centrifuge, zero-G maneuvers in a KC-135 “Vomit Comet,” and a flight to 80,000 feet in the F-104A Starfighter. After graduating from Yeager’s “Charm School,” he was assigned to the Fighter Branch of Flight Test Operations, where he flew the latest fighter aircraft and chased other test aircraft as they set world speed and altitude records. Marrett takes readers into the cockpit as he “goes vertical” in a T-38 Talon, completes high-G maneuvers in an F-4C Phantom, and conducts wet-runway landing tests in the accident-prone F-111A Aardvark. He writes about Col. “Silver Fox” Stephens setting a world speed record in the YF-12 Blackbird and Bob Gilliland testing speed stalls in the SR-71 spy plane, but he also relives stories of crashes that killed test pilot friends. He recounts dead-sticking a T-38 to a landing on Rogers Dry Lake after a twin-engine failure and conducting dangerous tail hook barrier testing in a fighter jet without a canopy. A mysterious UFO sighting in the night sky above the Mojave Desert, known as “The Edwards Encounter,” also receives Marrett’s attention. Whether the author is assessing a new aircraft’s performance or describing the experiences of test pilots as they routinely faced the possibility of death, this look at the golden age of flight testing both thrills and informs.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 2,559円

Classic Flight Testing at Edwards Air Force Base: A Career in Test and Evaluation: Reflections and Observations, Test Pilot Charles Adolph Oral History, F-111, Stall-Spin Testing, Culture, Combat【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

Professionally converted for accurate flowing-text e-book format reproduction, this unique USAF publication presents a fascinating oral history of Charles "Pete" Adolph, who retired as Director of Test and Evaluation in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense (Acquisition and Technology) on 31 January 1994. This completed more than 30 years of federal serviceーalmost all of it within the challenging field of test and evaluation (T&E). Peteーas he was widely known throughout the Department of Defense testing communityーenjoyed a remarkable career. It began in the late 1950s, as the heroic era of flight test in the first decade of the jet age was drawing to a close. Pete then played an increasingly prominent role in the transformation of flight testing into a systematic discipline using the latest in information technology to evaluate sophisticated weapon systems. His government career culminated as a senior director at the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD). There, in the Pentagon, he brought his many years of engineering and management experience in the field to bear upon the formulation of policies for the acquisition and testing of weapon systems in the post-cold-war era. The text that follows began as a series of five oral history interviews conducted in the Office of the Air Force Historian between 29 July 1993 and 15 April 1994. Ms. Pauline Tubbs of the United States Air Force Historical Research Agency at Maxwell Air Force Base (AFB), Alabama, expertly transcribed these interviews from approximately eight hours of audio tape. Mr. Lawrence R. Benson, the Air Force Historian's Assistant for Field Programs (and previously the Director of Research Services at the Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center), organized, revised, and edited the transcriptー adding explanatory material in brackets or footnotes as appropriate. Mr. Adolph was accompanied at most of the interviews by Mr. Douglas Nation of the 46th Test Wing at Eglin AFB, Florida, who was on a special assignment to the OSD T&E Directorate. Dr. James O. Young, Historian of the Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC), and his staff at Edwards AFB, California, helped with details on flight test. Although Mr. Adolph's responsibilities within the OSD encompassed testing of all types of systems throughout the four armed services, our interview focuses most sharply on Air Force flight testing at Edwards. This is where Pete spent the majority of his career, and where I first met him in 1980 after becoming the AFFTC Historian.

Contents: Classic Flight Testing At Edwards * Concurrent Testing And Production: The Case Of The F-111 * The Quest For Improved Aircraft Performance: Departure And Stall/Spin Testing * User Requirements And Operational Testing * Combined Testing With Contractors * The Government's Role In Developing Technology * Evolving Challenges In Flight Testing * The Culture Of Flight Testing * Migration From Contractor To Government Test Facilities * Importance Of The Private Sector * Integration Of Test Ranges * Improving Test Systems And Instrumentation * Test And Evaluation Consolidation And The Reliance Program * Interagency Testing * Test Management Oversight * Electronic Combat Testing * Software Testing And Human Factors * Post-Cold-War Implications * Glossary
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 850円

Fighter Pilot's Heaven Flight Testing the Early Jets【電子書籍】[ Donald S. Lopez ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

Fighter Pilot's Heaven presents the dramatic inside story of the American military's transition into the jet age, as told by a flyer whose life depended on its success. With colorful anecdotes about fellow pilots as well as precise technical information, Donald S. Lopez describes how it was to be “behind the stick” as a test pilot from 1945 to 1950, when the U.S. military was shifting from war to peacetime operations and from propeller to jet aircraft.

An ace pilot who had served with Gen. Claire Chennault's Flying Tiger Fighter Group, Lopez was assigned at the close of World War II to the elite Proof Test Group of the Air Proving Ground Command. Located at Eglin Field (later Eglin Air Force Base) in Florida, the group determined the operational suitability of Air Force weapons systems and aircraft and tested the first operational jet, the P-80 Shooting Star. Jet fighters required new techniques, tactics, and weaponry. Lopez recounts historic test flights in the P-59, P-80, and P-84, among other planes, describing complex combat maneuvers, hair-raising landings in unusual positions, and disastrous crashes and near crashes. This memoir is peppered with lively accounts of many pilots and their colleagues, revealing how airmen coped with both exhilarating successes and sometimes tragic failures.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 1,811円

Developing and Flight Testing the HL-10 Lifting Body: A Precursor to the Space Shuttle - NASA M2-F2, First Supersonic Flight, Future and Legacy, Accomplishments and Lessons【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

This NASA history document - converted for accurate flowing-text e-book format reproduction - tells the exciting story of the HL-10 NASA lifting body. From the foreword: The story we want to tell is a bit unique. The story of the development and flight testing of a unique aerospace vehicleーthe horizontal lander HL-10ーis from our perspective as primary members of the flight test team at the NASA Flight Research Center (now NASA Dryden Flight Research Center). Mr. Kempel was with the program eight months before the first flight and continued through the final (37th) flight. Mr. Painter's association with the HL-10 began approximately three years before the first flight and continued through the final flight. Mr. Thompson flew the first lightweight and heavyweight M2 vehicles. The first heavyweight lifting-body flight, the M2-F2, took place on July 12, 1966, with Mr. Thompson at the controls. Others may be more qualified to relate the story of the birth of the HL-10; however, we have included a section that presents some insight that may not exist elsewhere. This section was compiled using some unpublished notes of Robert W. Rainey and Charles L. Ladson of NASA Langley Research Center. History written by those who did not participate in the events themselves may be inclined to be muted, and this may be the case with this section. Many unnamed pilots, engineers, technicians, mechanics, and support personnel made this program work. The successes of the HL-10 were the result of efforts of the entire team, real people. People made it work. The impressions of the flight operations are ours and we got some help from others who lived it too. We hope, after reading it, that you will also think it is a story worth telling.

The origins of the lifting-body idea are traced back to the mid-1950s, when the concept of a manned satellite reentering the Earth's atmosphere in the form of a wingless lifting body was first proposed. Interesting and unusual events in the flight testing are presented with a review of significant problems encountered in the first flight and how they were solved. Impressions by the pilots who flew the HL-10 are included. The HL-10 completed a successful 37-flight program, achieved the highest Mach number and altitude of this class vehicle, and contributed to the technology base used to develop the space shuttle and future generations of lifting bodies.

INTRODUCTION * Lifting-Body Concept * Brief Area Description and Some History * GETTING STARTED * CONFIGURING THE HL-10 * Concept and Early Configuration * Final Configuration * FLIGHT VEHICLE DESCRIPTION * FLIGHT VEHICLE MISSION * FLIGHT TEST PREPARATION * M2-F2 Team * HL-10 Team * FLIGHT TESTING * The Maiden Flight * Postflight Analysis * The Second Flight * Simulation of the HL-10 * The First Lifting-Body Powered Flight * The First Supersonic Lifting-Body Flight * The Fastest and the Highest * Flight-Determined Lift and Drag * The Best Flying of the Lifting Bodies * Piloting the HL-10 * Vehicle Dynamics, Control, and Turbulence Response * Training for and Flying Chase for Lifting-Body Missions * The Final Flights * Pilots Participating in the Program * THE FUTURE AND LEGACY OF LIFTING BODIES * SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND LESSONS LEARNED * CONCLUDING REMARKS * REFERENCES * APPENDIX A * Glossary * APPENDIX B * The HL-10 Lifting-Body Team
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 969円

Flight Testing to Win An autobiograpghy of a test pilot【電子書籍】[ Tony Blackman ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

No aircraft is absolutely safe. This book is about Aviation, from learning to fly, becoming a test pilot, flight testing, demonstrating on some of the third world's worst airfields, then specializing in Avionics and finally joining the Board of the UK Civil Aviation Authority, helping to formulate the regulations that the author had spent so many years living by. Many stories are told, including flying with the legendary Howard Hughes when the world thought him a mad recluse, and testing many aircraft including all three V Bombers, an almost unique experience. The book, well illustrated, makes the point that flying is inherently risky, that regulations always try to quantify acceptable risk, that safety is a cost, and that test pilots have to sell their aircraft and should not try to make an aircraft safer than the rules require. It emphasizes the almost unbelievable changes in aviation in one working lifetime, whilst painting a picture of a much simpler world, now gone beyond recall.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 466円

Space Shuttle Orbiter Approach and Landing Test (ALT) Program Final Evaluation Report - Complete Details on the 1977 Captive and Free Flight Tests on the 747 STS Carrier Aircraft【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

This official NASA internal program document - converted for accurate flowing-text ebook format reproduction - is a comprehensive final report on the historic test flights of the Enterprise with the Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft in 1977. The introduction states:

The Approach and Landing Test Program consisted of a series of steps leading to the demonstration of the capability of the Space Shuttle orbiter to safely approach and land under conditions similar to those planned for the final phases of an orbital flight. The tests were conducted with the orbiter mounted on top of a specially modified carrier aircraft. The first step, completed January 10, 1977, provided airworthiness and performance verification of the carrier aircraft after modification. The second step, completed on March 2, 1977, consisted of three taxi tests and five flight tests with an inert unmanned orbiter. The third step, completed on July 26, 1977, consisted of three mated tests with an active manned orbiter. The fourth step, completed October 26, 1977, consisted of five flights in which the orbiter was separated from the carrier aircraft. For the final two flights, the orbiter tail cone, which had been used to reduce buffeting effects, was replaced by dummy main engines to simulate the actual orbital configuration. Landing gear braking and steering tests were accomplished during rollouts following the free flight landings. Ferry testing was integrated into the Approach and Landing Test Program to the extent possible. In addition, four ferry test flights were conducted with the orbiter mated to the carrier aircraft in the ferry configuration after the free-flight tests were completed.

Contents: INTRODUCTION * CAPTIVE-INERT TEST PHASE * TAXI TESTS * FLIGHT TEST PROGRAM * PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT * CAPTIVE-ACTIVE TEST PHASE * FLIGHT TEST PROGRAM * PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT * FREE FLIGHT TEST PHASE * FLIGHT TEST PROGRAM * Free Flight 1 * Free Flight 2 * Free Flight 3 * Free Flight 4 * Free Flight 5 * ORBITER PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT * Structures * Mechanical Systems * Power * Pyrotechnics * Avionics * Environmental Control and Life Support System * Aerodynamics * Government-Furnished Equipment * PILOT'S REPORTS * Free Flight 1 * Free Flight 2 * Free Flight 3 * Free Flight 4 * Free Flight 5 * FLIGHT 5 APPROACH AND LANDING ASSESSMENT * FLIGHT TEST REQUIREMENTS ASSESSMENT * FLIGHT OPERATIONS ASSESSMENT * TRAINING AND SIMULATIONS * ONBOARD SYSTEMS * Software Flexibility * Ground Monitoring Concept * Redundancy Management * Redundancy Management Switches * GROUND SYSTEMS * ANOMALY SUMMARY * CAPTIVE-ACTIVE FLIGHTS * Hydraulic System 1 Water Boiler Steam Vent Line Temperature Reading s Low * Inertial Measurement Unit 1 Would Not Go To Operate * Nose Landing Gear Door Thruster Triggering Pawl Did Not Function * Auxiliary Power Unit 1 Exhaust Duct Temperature Measurement Failed * FREE FLIGHTS * General Purpose Computer 2 Lost Synchronization at Separation * Equivalent Airspeed "Off" Flag * Main Landing Gear Door Hinge Pin Assembly Was Missing * Orbiter UHF Communications Were Marginal * Hydraulic System 3 Pressure Was Low During Postlanding Load Test * CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS * REFERENCES * APPENDIX A - VEHICLE DESCRIPTION * APPENDIX B - VEHICLE HISTORICAL DATA * APPENDIX C - CAPTIVE-INERT AND CAPTIVE-ACTIVE FLIGHT DESCRIPTIONS * APPENDIX D - VEHICLE MASS PROPERTIES * APPENDIX E - FLIGHT TEST REQUIREMENTS SUMMARY * APPENDIX F - METEOROLOGICAL DATA * APPENDIX G - PROBLEM SUMMARY
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 1,142円
