Pocket History: Fame & Infamy History's most shocking frauds, scandals & intrigues【電子書籍】[ Ed Wright ]

Fame & Infamy is part of the series a conveniently portable, stylishly packaged and eminently collectible set of six books that each open a window onto a selection of remarkable stories, characters and themes from the past. Fame & Infamy tells the stories of adultery, perversion, shameless greed, theft and deception that have brought down presidents, prime ministers, clergy and famous people of practically every stripe. The gripping cloak-and-dagger dramas climax in catastrophic exposures and career- destroying indiscretions that rival great fiction and are all the more astounding because they are seminal moments in our history. The stories star famous names and often share selfish desires, yet each tale shocks us, sometimes for its audacity, sometimes its complexity and sometimes its pure idiocy, from televangelist Jimmy Swaggart caught with a prostitute, Howard Hughes's bizarre personal hygiene to Anthony Blunt who attained British royal favour while spying for the Soviet Union. Alternately disturbing and amazing, the narratives reveal clandestine affairs, underhanded political dealings, blatant criminal activity and other dramatic episodes that erupt in the lives of successful people gone bad.

National Rhetorics in the Syrian Immigration Crisis Victims, Frauds, and Floods【

The Syrian refugee crisis seriously challenged countries in the Middle East, Europe, the United States, and elsewhere in the world. It provoked reactions from humanitarian generosity to anti-immigrant warnings of the destruction of the West. It contributed to the United Kingdom’s “Brexit” from the European Union and the election of Donald Trump as president of the United States. This book is a unique study of rhetorical responses to the crisis through a comparative approach that analyzes the discourses of leading political figures in ten countries, including gateway, destination, and tertiary countries for immigration, such as Turkey, several European countries, and the United States. These national discourses constructed the crisis and its refugees so as to welcome or shun them, in turn shaping the character and identity of the receiving countries, for both domestic and international audiences, as more or less humanitarian, nationalist, Muslim-friendly, Christian, and so forth. This book is essential reading for scholars wishing to understand how European and other countries responded to this crisis, discursively constructing refugees, themselves, and an emerging world order.

Vice is endemic to Western capitalism, according to this fascinating, wildly entertaining, often startling history of modern finance. Ian Klaus’s Forging Capitalism demonstrates how international financial affairs in the nineteenth century were conducted not only by gentlemen as a noble pursuit but also by connivers, thieves, swindlers, and frauds who believed that no risk was too great and no scheme too outrageous if the monetary reward was substantial enough. Taken together, the grand deceptions of the ambitious schemers and the determined efforts to guard against them have been instrumental in creating the financial establishments of today.

In a story teeming with playboys and scoundrels and rich in colorful and amazing events, Klaus chronicles the evolution of trust through three distinct epochs: the age of values, the age of networks and reputations, and, ultimately, in a world of increased technology and wealth, the age of skepticism and verification. Men Is Cheap Exposing the Frauds of Free Labor in Civil War America【電子書籍】[ Brian P. Luskey ]

When a Civil War substitute broker told business associates that "Men is cheep here to Day," he exposed an unsettling contradiction at the heart of the Union's war effort. Despite Northerners' devotion to the principles of free labor, the war produced rampant speculation and coercive labor arrangements that many Americans labeled fraudulent. Debates about this contradiction focused on employment agencies called "intelligence offices," institutions of dubious character that nevertheless served the military and domestic necessities of the Union army and Northern households. Northerners condemned labor agents for pocketing fees above and beyond contracts for wages between employers and employees. Yet the transactions these middlemen brokered with vulnerable Irish immigrants, Union soldiers and veterans, former slaves, and Confederate deserters defined the limits of independence in the wage labor economy and clarified who could prosper in it.

Men Is Cheap shows that in the process of winning the war, Northerners were forced to grapple with the frauds of free labor. Labor brokers, by helping to staff the Union military and Yankee households, did indispensable work that helped the Northern state and Northern employers emerge victorious. They also gave rise to an economic and political system that enriched the managerial class at the expense of laborers--a reality that resonates to this day.

Scams, Cons, Frauds, and Deceptions Online and In-person Victimization Schemes【

This unique volume presents cutting-edge research on the nature and extent of a wide range of scams, cons, frauds, and deceptive activities, including sextortion, the use of ransomware, phishing, identity theft, Ponzi schemes, online shopping fraud, gift card scams, and health care fraud targeting elderly victims. The contributions to this book raise and attempt to answer several intriguing questions:

Why have governments in each global region failed to respond more aggressively to these crimes? What can/should the private sector and social media giants be doing?

Can the current responses of both governments and the private sector be linked to the public’s ambivalence about how to respond to these forms of offending and victimization?

Does a large segment of the public admire individuals who get involved in these activities, in large part due to the positive portrayal of scammers, fraudsters, and con artists in both literature and cinema?

Or does the public’s view of the harm caused by these scams and cons vary, based on our view of who is victimized (e.g., individuals or corporations) and/or why they were chosen?

Will governments ? as they have done in the past ? attempt to influence the public’s views by restricting access to books and movies that focus on the latest scams, cons, and frauds taking place on-line and in-person via book banning and other forms of censuring?

And finally, should this discussion of the influence of books and cinema on the public’s views of scams, frauds, cons, and deception be broadened to include the government’s ongoing attempts to censure a wide range of books and films that may influence the public’s view of moralityーand more recently, the public’s view of our governmentーdue to their content?

Timely and thought-provoking, this book will be a key resource for researchers, scholars, and practitioners in criminology and criminal justice, sociology, law, psychology, and social work, while also appealing to interdisciplinary researchers seeking insight into the relationship between positive portrayals of scammers, fraudsters, and con artists in literature and cinema, and the public’s perception of individuals who get involved in these activities. Adscam: How Online Advertising Gave Birth to One of History's Greatest Frauds and Became a Threat to Democracy【電子書籍】[ Bob Hoffman ]

Everywhere we go on the web we are being followed. Everything we do on the web is being catalogued. This is called tracking. Tracking is just a pleasanter word for spying. By tracking us, marketers know who we talk to, what we say, where we go, and what we do. They know who our friends are, what our interests are, what our bank balances look like, what our sexual preferences are, what our political leanings are, and where we are at any moment. The consequences of all this surveillance have become shocking, disturbing, and dangerous. In ADSCAM, Bob Hoffman follows his #1 selling book BadMen to describe how online tracking has become a threat to individuals and to democratic societies, and has helped create one of the greatest frauds in history.

"A fascinating account of an advertising practice little understood...as meticulous as it is accessible ...this is an eye-opening book." - Kirkus Reviews

Freedom, Fascists, Fools, & Frauds: Bapton Books Position Papers and Other Critical Pieces, 2011 ? 2014【電子書籍】[ GMW Wemyss ]

Here are collected some of Bapton Books’ position papers from the past three years, and other critical writings by Mr Pyle and Mr Wemyss. Provocative ? not to say, provoking ? and all too often prescient, these papers detail the dirty work at the crossroads where the culture, law, politics, and policy intersect.

We live in a time in which ‘advocacy’ and indeed democratic politics are far too regularly degenerating into objective fascism; in which liberty is under assault at home; and in which quite evident fascists and tyrants abroad are on the march. There is a remedy: the full-throated defence of freedom, by all of us, together, on all sides of all issues. You may find the prescription ? the mixture as before ? in these pages.

Bapton Books Position Papers aim to inform, to question, to educate, to assert, to challenge, to analyse, and, always, to spark debate. They are made available to the reading public and to all who are intelligently interested in the affairs of the day.

Hoax Hitler's Diaries, Lincoln's Assassins, and Other Famous Frauds【電子書籍】[ Edward Steers Jr. ]

A “lively yet thoroughly researched” look at persistent myths and stubborn scams, and how historians try to combat them (The Courier-Journal).

Did a collector with a knack for making sensational discoveries really find the first document ever printed in America? Did Hitler actually pen a revealing set of diaries? Has Jesus’ burial cloth survived the ages? Can the shocking true account of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination be found in lost pages from his murderer’s diary?

Napoleon famously observed that “history is a set of lies agreed upon,” and Edward Steers Jr. investigates six of the most amazing frauds ever to gain wide acceptance in this engrossing book. Hoax examines the legitimacy of the Shroud of Turin, perhaps the most hotly debated relic in all of Christianity, and the fossils purported to confirm humanity’s “missing link,” the Piltdown Man. Steers also discusses two remarkable forgeries, the Hitler diaries and the “Oath of a Freeman,” and famous conspiracy theories alleging that Franklin D. Roosevelt had prior knowledge of the planned attack on Pearl Harbor and that the details of Lincoln’s assassination are recorded in missing pages from John Wilkes Booth’s journal.

The controversies that Steers presents show that there are two major factors involved in the success of a hoax or forgeryーgreed and the desire to believe. Though all of the counterfeits and conspiracies featured in Hoax have been scientifically debunked, some remain fixed in many people’s minds as truth. As Steers points out, the success of these frauds highlights a disturbing fact: If true history fails to entertain the public, it is likely to be ignored or forgotten.
