<p>The choice of a geothermal heat pump system, allows to use the ground as a heat reservoir with which to exchange heat during the year; this involves that the effect of seasonal temperature variations are minor than the variations of the outside air. In this book two air -conditioning systems for buildings are compared: a geothermal heat pump water / air and a traditional heat pump air / air. After dimensioning the vertical geothermal probes with the major theoretic systems (German regulations VDI 4640, IGSHPA and ASHRAE), two different models have been developed: one for the heat exchange between the heat transfer fluid and the subsoil, and another one for the calculation of the energetic, economic and environmental performances of both the systems. For the industry sector it is the basic precondition for its existence. For every little step within the production process, being the production of a good itself, the handling with raw materials or the transportation of the final product to the customer, plenty of energy is required. Private households also consume a lot of energy. But due to the global population growth, the available earth's resources have come under enormous pressure to meet the humans' energy needs (P?rez Latorre, 1999, p. 2). In the last 30 years the world's population has grown by more than 30% (www.weltbevoelkerung.de) and reached the present status of about 6.6 billion people (www.cia.gov). The total energy consumption has even increased more quickly comparing to the number of people on the planet. At the same time the population continues to grow and is estimated to reach about 9.1 billion people by the year 2050 (www.un.org). As the supply of oil, gas, coal and uranium, so called classic energy resources, is quite limited, the increase of population could result in the energy supply shortfall with considerable economic and social consequences. But this is not the only problem. The reserves of fossil fuels are distributed unequally over the globe (BMU, Renewable Energies - Innovations for the future, 2006, p. 11). The high dependence of energy-hungry industrial countries from energy supplying countries can even lead to political conflicts. Furthermore the use of these energy resources has significant environmental effects. The capacity of the environment to absorb the waste produced by the energy consumption is strictly limited, too. These waste products not only damage the environment, but also are harmful to the human health (BMU, Renewable Energies - Innovations for the future, 2006, p. 12). The challenge of this essay is to analyse, whether and if so which alternative energy sources are to be considered as an answer to the problems mentioned above. Thereby I want to examine sustainable energy resources in order to find out, whether their utilization make sense politically, economically and environmentally. First I will provide general information about renewable energies and give an overview of main renewable energy sources. It is in this context that the contributions of geothermal energy to electricity production become critical to meeting this national challenge.</p> <p>Geothermal energy resources are commercially exploitable concentrations of the Earth's subsurface heat.2 Even if only 1% of the thermal energy contained within the Earth's uppermost crust (10 kilometers or less) were tapped for use, that output would be equivalent to 500 times the energy contained in all the oil and gas resources known in the world.3 With the application of emerging technologies, this large, domestic resource can provide a significant contribution to base load electricity generation while having minimal impact on the environment.</p> <p>Geothermal power is a renewable, low-carbon option for producing base load electricity across the United States. Improved technologies have the potential to access vast untapped geothermal energy sources, which experts estimate to contain 50,000 times the energy of all oil and gas resources in the world. Clearly, geothermal energy can greatly contribute to the nation's energy mix. It is clean and available 24 hours a day. The United States has an estimated 2800 MW of geothermal installed capacity; worldwide, the figure is 8000 MW. The U.S. Geological Survey estimated in 1979 that the hydrothermal geothermal power potential in the United States was approximately 23,000 MW. In addition, thousands of installations are using geothermal energy for agriculture, aquaculture, district heating and cooling, and other direct uses. This estimate of geothermal potential could be even higher. Using geothermal energy reduces our dependence on imported fuels, creates jobs in the United States, and more favorably balances the U.S. global trading position. Geothermal energy has environmental benefits. Electricity produced from geothermal resources in the United States prevents the emission of 22 million tons of carbon dioxide, 200,000 tons of sulfur dioxide, 80,000 tons of nitrogen oxides, and 110,000 tons of particulate matter every year compared to conventional coal-fired power plants. A geothermal binary power plant, operating with a closed system, emits virtually nothing to the atmosphere.
