J?n Leifs and the Musical Invention of Iceland【電子書籍】[ ?rni Heimir Ing?lfsson ]

A study of the influential Icelandic composer's career and his work.
In J?n Leifs and the Musical Invention of Iceland, ?rni Heimir Ing?lfsson provides a striking account of the dramatic career of Iceland's iconic composer. Leifs (1899?1968) was the first Icelander to devote himself fully to composition at a time when a local music scene was only beginning to take form. He was a fervent nationalist in his art, fashioning an idiosyncratic and uncompromising "Icelandic" sound from traditions of vernacular music with the aim to legitimize Iceland as an independent, culturally empowered nation.
In addition to exploring Leifs's career, Ing?lfsson provides detailed descriptions of Leifs's major works and their cultural contexts. Leifs's music was inspired by the Icelandic landscape and includes auditory depictions of volcanos, geysers, and waterfalls. The raw quality of his orchestral music is frequently enhanced by an expansive percussion section, including anvils, stones, sirens, bells, ships' chains, shotguns, and cannons.
Largely neglected in his own lifetime, Leifs's music has been rediscovered in recent years and hailed as a singular and deeply original contribution to twentieth-century music. J?n Leifs and the Musical Invention of Iceland enriches our understanding and appreciation of Leifs and his music by exploring the political, literary and environmental contexts that influenced his work.
"Composers of fearsome originality seldom have an easy path in the world. J?n Leifs, who translated the landscapes and legends of Iceland into sound, comes vividly to life in this brilliant, panoramic biography, his myriad personal and political conflicts delineated with clarity and candor. A major twentieth-century figure at last receives his due." ーAlex Ross, music critic for The New Yorker and author of The Rest Is Noise
"J?n Leifs was the first major Icelandic composer and it is insane that most of his pieces were not performed or recorded until recently. His works were almost just a myth to us Icelanders and therefore this book is so magnificently important. . . . This book is incredibly well written and ?rni Heimir's analysis of the music is deeply satisfying. I listened to each work as it was being discussed, which turned the experience from black and white to color! An extraordinary achievement!" ーBj?rk, singer/songwriter

Music at World's End Three Exiled Musicians from Nazi Germany and Austria and Their Contribution to Music in Iceland【電子書籍】[ ?rni Heimir Ing?lfsson ]

A fascinating story of how three musicians, who escaped the Nazis, inspired Iceland's modern classical music.

In Iceland in the 1930s, classical music was only beginning to be seriously practiced, at the same time when musicians of Jewish heritage were fleeing Nazi Germany and Austria. Despite the country's strict immigration policy, three outstanding young musicians were allowed to settle there: Robert Abraham, Heinz Edelstein, and Victor Urbancic. Their influence on Iceland's music scene as conductors, instrumentalists, teachers, and scholars proved invaluable. In Music at World's End, the first in-depth study of the lives and careers of these three musicians, musicologist ?rni Ing?lfsson examines their formative years in Germany and Austria, their dramatic escapes from the Nazi regime, and their triumphs and frustrating setbacks in their new homeland, a country in which Jews were virtually unknown. This fascinating case study is a valuable addition to studies of musical exile during World War II and beyond.

Philosophy of Language and Webs of Information【電子書籍】[ Heimir Geirsson ]
|

The nature of propositions and the cognitive value of names have been the focal point of philosophy of language for the last few decades. The advocates of the causal reference theory have favored the view that the semantic contents of proper names are their referents. However, Frege’s puzzle about the different cognitive value of coreferential names has made this identification seem impossible. Geirsson provides a detailed overview of the debate to date, and then develops a novel account that explains our reluctance, even when we know about the relevant identity, to substitute coreferential names in both simple sentences and belief contexts while nevertheless accepting the view that the semantic content of names is their referents. The account focuses on subjects organizing information in webs; a name can then access and elicit information from a given web. Geirsson proceeds to extend the account of information to non-referring names, but they have long provided a serious challenge to the causal reference theorist.

The Thriverold Histories are the three-part biographical story of Ren Lioghtfinna. His story is one interwoven with the events that consume three different worlds. This first book recounts how Ren comes of age and finds his place in a world that stands between those of light and darkness, a world called Metaxuheimir. Ren must navigate the events surrounding the final collapse of the Ancient Order, as both a bystander and key participant in the history of Metaxuheimir. As new powers emerge, political and social chaos is inevitable. This chaos is used by the emerging political power called the Mountain, but also by a more ancient power. However, this ancient power that seeks to once again enslave humans, he must contend with another rising power, that of The Kingdom of Eternal Light. As a soldier in the Skotian empire Ren must fight political forces that seek to destroy his world, forces that wield awesome powers emanating from the Rift, known as Riptek, . The power of the Rift is a terrible power used by humans to enslave the weak, enrich themselves, and destroy their political enemies. But these powers come at a price, one that could once again transform Metaxuheimir into a world enslaved by powerful ancient forces from beyond the Rift.
