EASTERN STORIES AND LEGENDS - 30 Childrens Stories from India Stories and Legends from the Himalayas【電子書籍】[ Anon E. Mouse ]

Herein are a collection of children’s stories from the East are a collection of Hindu and Buddhist tales, which are a marked change from our normal diet of Western folklore. In this volume you will find 30 children’s which have their roots in the life giving waters of the Brahmaputra and Ganges rivers of that magnificent range of mountains we know as the Himalayas.
Here you will find stories like:
The Banyan Deer
The Pupil Who Taught His Teacher
The Man Who Told A Lie
The Crow That Thought It Knew
The Judas Tree
The River-Fish And The Money; and many, many more.

You may be astonished to find that the ethics of these stories are identical with many of the Western standard fare: here we find condemnation of hypocrisy, cruelty, selfishness, and vice of every kind and a constant appeal to Love, Pity, Honesty, loftiness of purpose and breadth of vision.

In a time when our awareness of nature and the threats it faces is ever more present, the Indian mind never has any hesitation in acknowledging its kinship with nature, its unbroken relation with all, which is perhaps the best summing up of the value of this collection.

So sit back with a steamy beverage and be prepared to be entertained for many-an-hour with this collection of “fresh” tales and stories. If and when you come to pick up the story where you left it, don’t be surprised if you find a younger reader is now engrossed in the book and is reluctant to let it go.

10% of the net sale will be donated to charities by the publisher.

KEYWORDS/TAGS: Indian Jungle, Tales from Old India, fairy tales, folklore, myths, legends, children’s stories, childrens stories, bygone era, fairydom, ethereal, fairy land, classic stories, children’s bedtime stories, happy place, happiness, Hare, Run Away, Monkey And The Crocodile, Spirit, Live In A Tree, Not Afraid, Parrot, Fed, Parents, Man, Work, Give Alms, King, See, Truth, Bull, Demand, Fair Treatment, Gratitude, Horse. Environmental Sustainability from the Himalayas to the Oceans Struggles and Innovations in China and India【電子書籍】

The book is written in the backdrop of the environmental impacts of and future requirements from the natural environment for rapid economic growth that has characterized recent economic history of China and India, especially over the past few decades. The environmental impacts of such rapid economic changes have been, more frequently than otherwise, degrading in character. Environmental impacts of economic activities create degraded natural ecosystems by over utilization of nature’s provisioning ecosystem services (from Himalaya to the Ocean), as well, by the use of the natural environment as sink for dumping of unmarketable products or unused inputs of economic activities. Such processes affect wide range of ecosystem processes on which the natural environment including human population depend on.

Critical perspectives cast by various chapters in this book draw attention to the various ways in which space and power interact to produce diverse geographies of sustainability in a globalizing world. They also address the questions such as who decides what kind of a spatial arrangement of political power is needed for sustaining the environment. Who stands to gain (or lose) what, when, where, and why from certain geographical areas being demarcated as ecologically unique, fragile and vulnerable environments? Whose needs and values are being catered to by a given ecosystem service? What is the scope for critical inquiry into the ways in which the environment is imagined, represented and resisted in both geopolitical struggles and everyday life? The book provides insights to both academics from diverse disciplines and policy makers, civil society actors interested in mutual exchange of knowledge between China and India.

Cloud Messenger Love and Loss in the Indian Himalayas【電子書籍】[ Karen Trollope-Kumar ]

As a Canadian medical student, Karen Trollope-Kumar went to India to study social and preventive medicine and met a young pediatrician named Pradeep. His dream of working in the Himalayan foothills captured her imagination, and the man captured her heart. They married in a Hindu wedding ceremony and pledged to share a life of service and spiritual growth. In this poignant, heartwarming, and gently humorous memoir, Karen recounts an eleven-year chapter of their unusual lives. She and Pradeep worked as medical doctors in the Himalayas, first in a rural hospital and later in remote mountain villages. When disaster struck ー an assassination, an earthquake, a political crisis ー their ideals, their safety, and their relationship are put at risk. The Cloud Messenger is a story of adventure and idealism, culture and medicine, faith and love, and it raises enduring questions: How can we cross religious and cultural boundaries? What happens to our dreams in the face of danger and disillusionment? And when dreams diverge, when one spouse can no longer continue on a certain path, what path do we choose?

The Himalayas in the Anthropocene Environment and Development【

This book aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current challenges in one of the most biodiverse regions in the world. Environmental sustainability and climate change implications in the mountain ecosystems in general and mountainous regions of the Global South in particular are key concerns of the present-day world. In particular, the mountainous regions in the Global South are excessively being subjected to haphazard developmental activities making them vulnerable to all possible aspects of climate change. Ecologically fragile and biodiversity-rich (considered ‘hotspot’ of biodiversity) Himalayan Region (HR) is subjected to high vulnerability due to climate change and unsustainable developmental activities. A major portion of the Indian HR, for instance, has gradually been endangered by intense environmental burden owing to rapid and haphazard urbanization, extreme weather events, etc. Unfortunately, environmental sustainability studies in many parts of the region are still inadequate. Accordingly, in this book, the authors provide a detailed account of the Himalayas in the epoch of Anthropoceneー“the most recent period in Earth’s history when human activity started to have a significant impact on the planet’s climate and ecosystems" (as defined by the National Geographic Society). It is no secret that the haphazard developmental activities in the Himalayas are having tremendous impacts on the local ecosystems. Many of such impacts are irreversible over the next hundreds of years and it should ring an alarm to all of us alike. Therefore, it becomes increasingly imperative that we document the existing anthropogenic challenges in the Himalayas, analyse them and find a way where environment and development can go hand in hand. This book is an attempt in that direction. The authors aim to address issues ranging from unorganized tourism practices to the big dams in the Himalayas and from mining and quarrying activities to climate change implications and sustainable development goals (SDGs).

MEDITATION AT THE FOOT OF THE HIMALAYAS【電子書籍】[ Shutao Liao ]

The birth of this unusual epic poem was formed by mystique instinct forces, as the poet states:

"The writing process of this epic poem satisfied my desire for grand poetry. It is a courageous challenge to the boundaries of imagination and spirit. Like a sailor sailing in the sea, I have no way to retreat but to move forward to the unknown shore.

In the past few years, I have picked up the pen to write this epic poem several times, had to put it down in disappointment and then forgot about it. I have to thank a magical night, many beautiful poetry lines crowded into my dreams until I woke up. The epic of dozens of pages long, had already completed its prototype at that moment.

Therefore, only half of this collection of the epic poem was written by me using my own brainpower. Some of the images and sentences were automatically formed in dreams. It is the result of the perfect combination of unconsciousness, subconsciousness and consciousness. The sentences formed unconsciously in my sleep continued to flow out in disorder in my subconscious mind. Later, in my consciousness, I struggled to build them into palace-like lines of poetry. Like an insatiable chef, I wandered between thousands of seasonings, colors, and flavors before making my final choice. My thoughts and imagination revolved around the subject, describing it from different angles and levels, in order to achieve a broad and profound effect.

In this increasingly chaotic and corrupt world, how much I miss those days of beautiful literature and hungry readers. I wholeheartedly want to add a touch of literary beauty to this era, and I hope that the publication of this epic poem can fulfill my wish."

Caring for Glaciers Land, Animals, and Humanity in the Himalayas【電子書籍】[ Karine Gagn? ]

Regional geopolitical processes have turned the Himalayan region of Ladakh, in northwest India, into a strategic border area with an increasing military presence that has decentered the traditional agropastoralist economy. This in turn has led to social fragmentation, the growing isolation of elders, and ethical dilemmas for those who strive to maintain traditional subsistence activities. Simultaneously, climate change is causing glaciersーa vital source of life in the regionーto recede, which elders perceive as the consequence of a broken bond with the natural environment and the deities that inhabit the landscape.

Caring for Glaciers looks at the causes and consequences of ongoing social and cultural change in peoples’ relationship with the natural environment. It illuminates how relations of reciprocity - learned through everyday life and work in the mountains with the animals, glaciers, and deities that form Ladakh’s sacred geography - shape and nurture an ethics of care. Integrating contemporary studies of affect, landscape, and multispecies anthropology, Caring for Glaciers contributes to the anthropology of ethics by examining the moral order that develops through the embodied experience of life and work in the Himalayas.

Bird Migration across the Himalayas Wetland Functioning amidst Mountains and Glaciers【

Birds migrating across the Himalayan region fly over the highest peaks in the world, facing immense physiological and climatic challenges. The authors show the different strategies used by birds to cope with these challenges. Many wetland avian species are seen in the high-altitude lakes of the Himalayas and the adjoining Tibetan Plateau, such as Bar-Headed Geese. Ringing programmes have generated information about origins and destinations, and this book is the first to present information on the bird's exact migratory paths. Capitalising on knowledge generated through satellite telemetry, the authors describe the migratory routes of a multitude of birds flying over or skirting the Himalayas. The myriad of threats to migratory birds and the wetland system in the Central Asian Flyway are discussed, with ways to mitigate them. This volume will inform and persuade policy-makers and conservation practitioners to take appropriate measures for the long-term survival of this unique migration.
