In Your Eyes I See My Words Homilies and Speeches from Buenos Aires, Volume 2: 2005?2008【電子書籍】[ Pope Francis ]

In Your Eyes I See My Words, Volume 2 contains Pope Francis’s homilies and speeches spanning from 2005 to 2008. Continuing what began in the first volume of this three-volume publication, Volume 2 shows Archbishop Bergoglio’s growth as a pastor and a theologian/scholar in the midst of his people. At the same time, it shows him emerging as an international voice calling for changes in the way the Church carries out its ministry and its educational task on behalf of children, youth, adults, and church ministers. In his homilies from Christmas, Easter, and especially in his response to the tragic fire and deaths of 194 people at the nightclub Republica Croma?on, we see Bergoglio speak passionately to his parishioners, challenging them with equal portions of tenderness and righteous anger. Perhaps uniquely, we also watch as his audiences, prominence, and influence grow globally, foreshadowing who he will become in 2013 when he is elected Pope.

On the larger national and international scale, Bergoglio addresses various conferences, such as the Argentina Press Association and the Episcopal Conference of Argentina of which he was elected President in 2005 and served the maximum possible term of six years. We see and read as his work takes him outside his country to Rome (2007) at the Pontifical Commission for Latin America; to Brasil (2007), where his presentation on the Crisis of Civilization and Culture at the Fifth CELAM Conference ends up shaping much of the Aparecida Conclusions; and finally, to Quebec (2008) as he speaks at the Forty-Ninth International Eucharistic Congress.

All told, In Your Eyes I See My Words, Volume 2 is a glimpse into a period of time in which Archbishop Bergoglio grows immensely in thought, reflection, and action, laying the groundwork for the mature, thoughtful, and beloved Pope Francis he has come to be known as around the world.

Letters and Homilies for Hellenized Christians A Socio-Rhetorical Commentary on Titus, 1-2 Timothy and 1-3 John【電子書籍】[ Ben Witherington III ]

Letters and Homilies for Hellenized Christians is the first of three volumes extending Ben Witherington's innovative socio-rhetorical analysis of New Testament books to the latter-Pauline and non-Pauline corpora. A second volume will continue the focus on letters and homilies for Hellenized Christians (1-2 Peter), while a third will focus on letters and homilies for Jewish Christians (Hebrews, James and Jude). By dividing the volumes according to the socio-religious contexts for which they were written, Witherington sheds fresh light on the documents, their provenance, character and importance. Throughout, Witherington shows his thorough knowledge of recent literature on these texts and focuses his attention on the unique insights brought about through socio-rhetorical analysis that either reinforces or corrects those gleaned from other approaches. Strikingly, based on his rhetorical analysis of the Pastorals, he makes the case for Luke as Paul's amanuensis for these letters. He also makes a strenuous argument against New Testament pseudepigrapha. "Bridging the Horizons" sections point to the relevance of the text for believers today, making this volume of special value to pastors and general readers as well as students and scholars.

JOHN OF DAMASCUS? MARIAN HOMILIES IN MEDIAEVAL SOUTH SLAVIC LITERATURES【電子書籍】[ Tsvetomira Danova ]

John of Damascus is one of the most remarkable figures among the Church Fathers. The reception of his theological and philosophical works among the Orthodox Slavs in the Middle Ages has been comparatively well researched ? unlike that of his homiletic works. This book is devoted to four Slavonic translations of three homilies of John of Damascus dedicated to the Mother of God. It offers the first comprehensive, complex study of the translations of John’s First and Third Homilies on the Dormition and his Homily on the Nativity of the Mother of God, preserved in South Slavic hagiographic and homiletic collections. The problems related to the textual tradition and translational peculiarities of these works have a central place in this study. It is supplemented with an edition of the Slavonic translations with parallel Greek text, as well as with a Slavonic-Greek and Greek-Slavonic list of content words.

Treasure in Earthen Vessels Homilies about God’s Good News in the Lives of Real People Like You and Me【電子書籍】[ Joseph Mark Vought ]

What could the following people have in common: a member of the Hitler Youth; a young couple pregnant before marriage; a woman and a chaplain in an ICU; a bride pouring communion wine all over her gown; a long-haul trucker baptized in a birdbath; a college kid arrested for being disorderly; and a Holocaust survivor meeting his rescuer after sixty-five years? Saint Paul would make the list. Writing after his conversion, Paul explains, "For I am the least of the apostles because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God, I am what I am, and his grace toward me has not been in vain" (1 Cor 15:9-10). After his death in 407 (or, according to some sources, during his life) he was given the Greek surname chrysostomos, meaning "golden mouthed", rendered in English as Chrysostom. The Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches honor him as a saint and count him among the Three Holy Hierarchs, together with Basil the Great and Gregory Nazianzus. Homilies on the Prophetic Burdens of Isaiah【電子書籍】[ Aelred of Rievaulx ]

During his twenty years as abbot of the Yorkshire monastery of Rievaulx, Aelred preached many sermons: to his own monks, in other monasteries, and at significant gatherings outside the cloister. In these thirty-one homilies on Isaiah chapters 13?16, together with an introductory Advent sermon, Aelred interprets the burdens that Isaiah prophesied against the nations according to their literal, allegorical, and moral senses. He sees these burdens as playing a role both in the history of the church and in the progress of the individual soul. This collection of homilies is an ambitious, unified work of a mature monk, synthesizing biblical exegesis, ascetical teaching, spiritual exhortation, and a theory of history.

The Virgin Mary in Byzantium, c.400-1000 Hymns, Homilies and Hagiography【電子書籍】[ Mary B. Cunningham ]

The Virgin Mary assumed a position of central importance in Byzantium. This book examines her portrayal in liturgical texts during the first six centuries of Byzantine history. Focusing on three main literary genres that celebrated this holy figure, it highlights the ways in which writers adapted their messages for different audiences. Mary is portrayed variously as defender of the imperial city, Constantinople, virginal Mother of God, and ascetic disciple of Christ. Preachers, hymnographers, and hagiographers used rhetoric to enhance Mary's powerful status in Eastern Christian society, depicting her as virgin and mother, warrior and ascetic, human and semi-divine being. Their paradoxical statements were based on the fundamental mystery that Mary embodied: she was the mother of Christ, the Word of God, who provided him with the human nature that he assumed in his incarnation. Dr Cunningham's authoritative study makes a major contribution to the history of Christianity.

Homilies from the Heart: Stories to Live, Love, and Serve One Another【電子書籍】[ Father George Rink ]

I met Father George in Orting, Washington at St. Cosmos and Damian Catholic Church. Each Sunday I would listen to his homilies and the stories he told as they related to the sacred scripture reading. His stories always touched my heart. The stories all contained practical tips, advice and suggestions in becoming a better person. He knew life was tough and that we would have problems in this life but his words of love and encouragement always made me feel God’s love and mercy. He knew we were all sinners and unworthy but he always reminded us how much God loves us and how he died for our sins on the cross so we could have eternal life with him. The stories were easy to remember and oftentimes I found myself retelling the stories to friends and family members who were in need of comforting words. I found sharing these stories was also an easy way to tell others about our loving and merciful God.

Sermons in Times of Crisis Twelve Homilies to Stir Your Soul【

The Catholic Church today finds itself in the midst of a crisis. The flock is scattering, and while some shepherds bravely set off in search of those lost and wandering sheep, others drive them, and many more, further from the fold.

But the Church has seen and weathered numerous crises in its two millennia, and always one or more of its priests and bishops stood up and rallied the faithful: whether to rebuke an Emperor or oppose a policy, encourage the faithful or defend the faith, bishops and priests ascended the pulpit and delivered sermons that met the pressing needs of their own times, sermons which should be read and remembered by Catholics of all times. You will find comfort within these pages as you read the words of these heroic pastors of souls including: St Ambrose of Milan, St Augustine, St John Chrysostom, St Edmund Campion, Pope St John Paul II , . . . and seven others.

Enter into the minds and thoughts of some of the bravest, most eloquent, homilists the Church has produced. More than one was killed for the words they uttered which you will find in these pages. But they counted not the cost.

Guided by Rev. Paul D. Scalia's introduction and commentaries, you will come to see that the Church has faced crises and survived, even thrived, before. In fact, it is one of the marks of her authenticity, as it has often been said, that no mere human institution could have survived the persecutions and scandals that the Catholic Church has withstood over 2000 years.

If you are a priest or bishop, just maybe reading these words of men not unlike yourself, will inspire you to stand and be counted and preach God's word from the pulpit without counting the cost.

Fifty Spiritual Homilies of St. Macarius the Egyptian【電子書籍】[ St. Macarius the Egyptian ]

The name of Macarius (= “Blessed”) was a common one among the Christians of the fourth and following centuries, especially in Egypt. Two men of the name stand out as twin giants of the ascetic life of that age and country. They are distinguished from each other as Macarius the Egyptian and Macarius the Alexandrian. An “Egyptian” means one who belonged to the ancient race of Egyptーa “Copt”; an Alexandrian means one who belonged to the Greek colony planted in that city. The two were friends and nearly contemporaries, though the Alexandrian was somewhat the younger. The Egyptian Macarius was born about the year 300.

Palladius, Bishop of Helenopolis, friend of St. Chrysostom, and historian of the religious life of the wilderness, begins his account of the two by saying that he hesitates to relate what he has to say of them, lest he should be thought a liar, so great and wonderful was their history. Palladius was not personally acquainted with the Egyptian. He says that he knew the Alexandrian, but that the other died a year before his own entrance into the Nitrian desert, which was about the year 390. But he was familiar with the locality, and with the people who knew the great ascetic.

“First,” he says, “I will speak of the Egyptian, who lived to the age of ninety years. Sixty of these he spent in the desert, having retired to it as a young man of thirty. He was gifted with such discernment as to be called ‘Age-in-Youth,’ because he made such swift progress. At the age of forty he received the grace of conquering evil spirits, and of healings and predictions. He was also admitted to the priesthood.”

CrossReach Publications

The Transfiguration of Christ in Greek Patristic Literature From Irenaeus of Lyons to Gregory Palamas With Addendum The Transfiguration of Christ in the "Spiritual Homilies" of Macarius the Egyptian【電子書籍】[ Christopher Veniamin ]

This study is based on a rigorous theological analysis of primary sources and aims to present the significance of the event of the Lord's Transfiguration on Mount Tabor by means of a diachronic investigation of some of the greatest masters of the spiritual life. Based on the three Synoptic Gospel narratives, it examines the Taborian theophany from the early Apocryphal Writings of the New Testament to the time of the Hesychast Controversy of the fourteenth century, and looks at this great revelation in writers who have been influential in our appreciation of the subject, taking each of them in turn analytically and within the context of their own theology and period, and focusing on important points of similarity and contrast in the themes they develop. In so doing, the investigation touches on many fundamental questions pertaining to the inner life of the Christian, including such themes as the divine status of Jesus Christ, the Trinitarian character of revelation, the role of the Holy Spirit, the importance of the ecclesial context, the vision of God, the transformation of the human person known as “theosis”, the non-dialectical character of our encounter with God, and our capacity to share in His life.

The Transfiguration of Christ in the “Spiritual Homilies” of Macarius the Egyptian, is published as an addendum to The Transfiguration in Greek Patristic Literature: From Irenaeus of Lyons to Gregory Palamas.

The Homilies On First And Second Corinthians【電子書籍】[ St. John Chrysostom ]

The Homilies on the Epistles to the Corinthians have ever been considered by learned and devout men as among the most perfect specimens of his mind and teaching. They are of that mixed form, between exposition and exhortation, which serves perhaps better than any other, first, to secure attention, and then to convey to an attentive hearer the full purport of the holy words as they stand in the Bible, and to communicate to him the very impression which the preacher himself had received from the text. The date of these Homilies is not exactly known: but it is certain that they were delivered at Antioch, were it only from Hom. xxi. 9. ad fin. Antioch was at that time, in a temporal sense, a flourishing Church, maintaining 3,000 widows and virgins , maimed persons, prisoners, and ministers of the altar; although, St. Chrysostom adds, its income was but that of one of the lowest class of wealthy individuals.

Homilies on the Epistles of Paul to the Corinthians【電子書籍】[ St. Chrysostom ]

The British edition of this translation has a preface in which is given a short “sketch” of Chrysostom’s history. As a fuller outline has been given in the course of the present reproduction of the homilies, it is considered advisable to omit this sketch here. (See Vol. ix. pp. 323.) The remainder of the English editor’s preface is as follows: another reason undoubtedly is the remarkable energy and fruitfulness of the writer’s mind, that command of language and of topics, and above all, that depth of charitable and religious feeling, which enabled him, to a very remarkable extent, to carry his hearers along with him, even when the things he recommended were most distasteful to their natures and prejudices. It is obvious how much of the expression of this quality must vanish in translation: the elegance and fluency of his Greek style, the flow of his periods, the quickness and ingenuity of his turns, all the excellencies to which more especially his surname was owing, must in the nature of things be sacrificed, except in case of very rare felicity, on passing into a modern language. His dramatic manner indeed, which was one of the great charms of his oratory among the Greeks, and his rapid and ingenious selection and variation of topics, these may in some measure be retained, and may serve to give even English readers some faint notion of the eloquence which produced so powerful effects on the susceptible people of the East. iv “Again, this profusion of literary talent, and eloquency and vehemence and skill in moral teaching, is of itself, as human nature now exists, a matter of much jealousy to considerate persons, found answerable to the profession implied in their works. And therefore it was desirable to dwell on it in this instance, for the purpose of pointing out afterwards how completely his life gave evidence that he meant and practiced what he taught. “The Homilies on the first Epistle to the Corinthians have ever been considered by learned and devout men as among the most perfect specimens of his mind and teaching. They are of that mixed form, between exposition and exhortation, which serves perhaps better than any Other, first, to secure attention, and then to convey to an attentive hearer the full purport of the holy words as they stand in the Bible, and to communicate to him the very impression which the preacher himself had received from the text. Accordingly they come in not unfitly in this series, by way of specimen of the hortatory Sermons of the ancients, as St. Cyril’s, of their Catechetical Lectures, and St. Cyprians, the Pastoral Letters, which were circulated among them

He was the foremost classical proponent of natural theology, and the father of Thomism. St. Chrysostom: Homilies on the Gospel of Saint Matthew【電子書籍】[ St. Chrysostom ]

The Homilies on this Gospel formed three volumes of the Oxford edition, published respectively in 1843, 1844, and 1851. The dedication appears in the third volume, as a memorial of Archbishop Howley, who died in 1848. The preface is from the pen of Charles Marriott of Oriel College. As regards the present volume, it may be remarked that the archaic style of the English translation has been preserved without material alteration. Even when obscure and involved, the form seemed to be a fitting dress for the original. Occasionally an amendation, or rather suggestion, has been made in a foot-note by the American editor. The spelling has been altered throughout by the printer, to accord with the usage more common among us. Some obvious typographical errors have been corrected, and these have usually been indicated. Instead of the brackets, used in the Oxford edition, to mark words or phrases supplied by the translator, Italics have been substituted. The same remark applies to passages where the Greek text is in doubt. The editor has felt at liberty to indicate more fully than the translator the portions supplied by the latter. In a few cases an emphatic word is printed in Italics, but these instances can be readily distinguished from the passages above referred to. The English translator of these Homilies was fortunate in having the Greek text of Mr. Frederick Field as the basis of his renderings. This text is also accessible in the edition of Migne, and has been compared throughout in the preparation of this volume. At the time when the Oxford edition appeared textual criticism had received but slight attention in England; hence the translator seems to have occasionally failed to estimate aright the value of the authorities for various readings. But in few patristic works do we have better security for the accuracy of the text than in the case of these Homilies on Matthew. The labor of the American editor has been, of course, supplementary. Attention has been called quite frequently to the Greek phrase used in the Homily, with a view to marking the usage in Ecclesiastical Greek. Many foot-notes have been added, to indicate the readings of the New Testament text appearing in the Homilies. The constant use of the ized Version by the translator made this necessary. The Greek phrase has frequently been given; still more frequently the rendering (and reading) of the Revised version. Where these agree with the text of i the Homily, they are cited, without comment, in brackets. Differences between readings are carefully indicated

Saint Gregory Palamas The Homilies【電子書籍】[ St. Gregory Palamas ]

This is the 2022 (3rd reprint edition with corrections and a revised Index of Names and Subjects) of The Scholar's Edition, designed for priests, theologians and the interested layperson. Edited with scholia and translated by Christopher Veniamin.

ST. GREGORY PALAMAS represents Orthodox theology at its most sublime. Patristic theology in the fourteenth century, of which St. Gregory is indubitably the greatest exponent, touched the very boundaries of theological expression.

St. Gregory’s sermons are among the finest in Patristic literature. In his treatment of the manifold themes contained therein, he is remarkably consistent in maintaining a balance between originality of thought and strict adherence to the tradition of his predecessors. Moreover, his genius resides in the ease with which he demonstrates, as only a master of the spiritual life can, the refreshingly practical significance of the doctrines of the Church for the Life in Christ.
