The Blind Guardians of Ignorance Covid-19, Sustainability, and Our Vulnerable Future: A Handbook for Change Leaders, Young and Old【電子書籍】[ Mats Larsson ]

The Covid-19 pandemic is not the last surprise that awaits present generations. In 2020 people across the globe have realized that governments have failed to prepare for important challenges, even highly probable ones predicted by experts for decades. Greta Thunberg has scolded world leaders for not doing more to stop global warming. Greta and other experts seem to believe that there are plans for the transformation to sustainability waiting in the drawers of heads of state to become implemented, but there are no such plans. Sustainability experts have focused on climate change ー nobody has developed the large-scale solutions that Greta asks for. Instead, politicians, business leaders, and sustainability experts have assumed that market forces will drive the transformation to e-mobility, the circular economy, and a sustainable society. In fact, very little has been done to develop the large-scale systems that are needed to replace the present production and distribution systems of the global economy. There are 6 million electric cars, 0.5 per cent of global car fleets. At the present rate it would take 500 years to replace existing car fleets and there is no solution for long-distance transportation ready to be implemented. In the case of resource efficient production and distribution systems, countries have made even less progress.Very large investments will be necessary to build sustainable and resilient societies. Covid-19 shows that conscious measures, driven by governments, are needed to prepare for large-scale challenges. The transformation to sustainability involves large investments and management of large-scale transformation programmes, reminiscent of the largest development programmes ever performed by mankind. Few decision makers are aware of the measures that need to be taken to make the global economy sustainable and resilient. Countries need to prepare for a challenging future. Can globalization continue or do countries need to build an entirely new type of economy?

Worse Than Ignorance The Challenge of Health Misinformation【電子書籍】[ Peter J. Schulz ]

This Element considers health misinformation and the problems it presents. The evolving communication contextーchanging doctor-patient relationships and developments in information technologyーpresents patients with a vastly enriched information landscape and new challenges to patients navigating it. These challenges are magnified as growing patient empowerment and autonomy have increased expectations for patient involvement in medical decisions. In this context, the ways people approach presented information, learn from it, understand it, and use it, exacerbate the risk that they become misinformedーbelieving things that are inimical to improved health. Moreover, these same processes make it difficult to correct such beliefs. Approaches building on trust between patient and professional exemplify improved communication to increase accurate patient knowledge and understanding in the service of better health. Profound Ignorance Plato's Charmides and the Saving of Wisdom【電子書籍】[ David Lawrence Levine ]

Returning from the battle of Potidaea, Socrates reenters the city only to find it changed, with new leadership in the making. Socrates assumes the mask of physician in order to diagnose the city’s condition in the persons of the young and charismatic Charmides and his ambitious and formidable guardian Critias. Beneath the cloak of their self-presentations, Doctor Socrates discovers a profound and communicable disease: their incipient tyranny, “the greatest sickness of the soul.” He thereby is able to “foresee” their future and their role in the oligarchy (The Thirty Tyrants) that overthrows the democracy at the end of the Peloponnesian War.

The unusual diagnostic instrument of this physician of the city: the question of sophrosyne (customarily translated as moderation). The analysis of the soul of this popular favorite uncovers a distorted development with little prospect of self-knowledge, and that of the guardian, a profound disabling ignorance, deluded and perverted by his presumed practical wisdom. Alongside on the bench sits Socrates whose ignorance, by contrast, shows itself to be enabling, measured and prospective. In this way, the profound ignorance of the tyrant and the profound ignorance of the philosopher are made to mutually illuminate one another.

In the process, Levine brings us to see Plato’s extended apologia or defense of Socrates as “a teacher of tyrants” and his counter-indictment of the city for its unthinking acceptance of its leaders. Moreover, in the face of modern skepticism, we are brought to see how such “value judgments” are possible, how Plato conceives the prospects for practical judgment (phron?sis). In addition we witness the care with which Plato presents his penetrating diagnoses even amidst compromised circumstances. Levine, further, is at pains to situate the specific dialogic issues in their larger significance for the philosophic tradition. Lastly, the author’s inviting style encourages the reader to think along with Socrates.

The question of tyranny is always relevant. The question of our ignorance is always immediate. The conversation about sophrosyne needs to be resumed.

Shaking Up the City Ignorance, Inequality, and the Urban Question【電子書籍】[ Tom Slater ]

Shaking Up the City critically examines many of the concepts and categories within mainstream urban studies that serve dubious policy agendas. Through a combination of theory and empirical evidence, Tom Slater “shakes up” mainstream urban studies in a concise and pointed fashion by turning on its head much of the prevailing wisdom in the field. To this end, he explores the themes of data-driven innovation, urban resilience, gentrification, displacement and rent control, neighborhood effects, territorial stigmatization, and ethnoracial segregation.

With important contributions to ongoing debates in sociology, geography, urban planning, and public policy, this book engages closely with struggles for land rights and housing justice to offer numerous insights for scholarship and political action to guard against the spread of an urbanism rooted in vested interest.

Leadership of Shame Pleading “Ignorance of the Law”, after harming another in reprisal, is no excuse【電子書籍】[ Gurinder Rana ]

“The onus of proving the charges brought against a defendant is the duty of the prosecutor and, not of the defense.? The prosecutor must prove all charges, by the preponderance of the evidence, clearly and concisely, beyond any shadow of a doubt.? This is the law, and it is undisputed.? If the glove doesn’t fit then, you must acquit.”

In the wake of 9/11, a few military leaders fabricated false charges against their subordinates to avoid facing any consequence for their illicit actions. What followed was widespread hatred for the colored, non-Christians, separate creeds, and non-American nationals.? The United States Armed Forces overlooked such cases and closed them arbitrarily without informing the affected troops.? The inspectors generals were overwhelmed with complaints, and eventually, the GAO investigated and exposed certain crimes. One of the unsolved cases not addressed by the GAO was the case of Captain Arvind Johar. The Way of Ignorance And Other Essays【電子書籍】[ Wendell Berry ]

A soulful, searching collection of essays that tackle the complexities of contemporary America from “the prophet of rural America” (New York Times).

From the war in Iraq to Hurricane Katrina to the political sniping engendered by Supreme Court nominationsーcontemporary American society is characterized by divisive anger, profound loss, and danger. Wendell Berry, “the prophet of rural America” (New York Times) and one of the country’s foremost cultural critics, responds with hope and intelligence in a series of essays that tackle the major questions of the day. Whose freedom are we considering when we speak of the free market or free enterprise? What is really involved in our national security? What is the price of ownership without affection? Berry answers in prose that shuns abstraction for clarity, coherence, and passion, giving us essays that may be the finest of his long career. “Everything in the book illumines.” ーBooklist

“[Berry’s] poems, novels and essays . . . are probably the most sustained contemporary articulation of America’s agrarian, Jeffersonian ideal.” ーPublishers Weekly

“Wendell Berry is one of those rare individuals who speaks to us always of responsibility, of the individual cultivation of an active and aware participation in the arts of life.” ーThe Bloomsbury Review

The Correct Decision Freedom Versus Evil And Ignorance【電子書籍】[ Kazoun Jamil ]

For the first time in recorded history of man, a mathematical formula has been developed to measure the accuracy and error in a vote, in a group decision.

Humans have lived for thousands of years making big and small decisions that dominate their life in politics, law, economics and culture, without ever measuring these decisions' mathematical accuracy and error. Specific formulas for this did not exist. Now, a formula exists! A congress, a parliament, a senate, a court, a Supreme Court, a jury, a corporate board, or a commission have no excuse any longer for allowing votes that are not measured for accuracy and error.

The content shows how the uneducated public acts as "a mob that uses the law" to control others or steal their property just as "a mob that uses guns" to do the same. The author describes many lawmakers and the uneducated public as "thieves" stealing by force-of-law from one person to give another, just as Robin Hood was a thief that stole by force-of-weapon from innocent people and was glorified by those who received stolen property and cared less how this stolen property was gained, as long as it was given to them.

Individuals will learn from this book how to create Freedom Coalitions instead the current system of Oppression Coalitions that are the basis of current Mob Rule political systems.

The new basis for freedom will be mathematics, a scientific solid and sustainable foundation for human freedom.

Theater in der Filmrolle. Theatralit?t im Film 'Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)'【電子書籍】[ Isabel Surges ]

The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)' theatraler Elemente bedient. 'Birdman: the best film about theatre ever made?'

The Colonial Present The Role of Ignorance and the Rule of Law【電子書籍】[ Kerry Coast ]

No treaties were made with indigenous nations residing in those territories where now there is a Canadian province called British Columbia. Instead, a breathtaking policy of criminalization, assimilation and land rights and sovereignty extinguishment has been vigorously carried out against them. Present day governments continue that approach, now 150 years old, in processes which have recently been re-named and cosmetically improved but remain unconstitutional and are prohibited by the 1948 Genocide Convention, which terms as genocide, inter alia, deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part. Neither Britain nor Canada nor the settlers of British Columbia themselves have ever honourably addressed the peoples whose lands and resources form British Columbia. The indigenous nations in what is now called British Columbia have never joined Canada but had citizenship imposed on them. The province of BC has never fulfilled Canada???s constitutional requirements of purchasing lands from the indigenous owners before settling. The ongoing colonization of British Columbia relies on the settler population???s indifference to the indigenous peoples??? plights and rights. The Colonial Present documents the colonizer???s manufacture of a new mythology to dehumanize the native peoples and strip them of their rightful place. The interests of resource industries have dominated accounts of indigenous peoples throughout the mainstream media, the academic presses and the courts. They have substantially corrupted and impoverished the non-native understanding of indigenous peoples on whose homelands they live and work, and to which they seem to feel entitled. The indigenous nations and individuals have suffered excruciating losses. But the highest expression of official BC aspirations for reconciliation is only that they should release title to their homelands, accept a small financial, land and program funding settlement, and submit to the British Columbia Treaty Commission agenda reducing them, in legal terms, to incorporated associations exercising management capacities barely distinguishable from those of BC municipalities, while by fee simple title, their lands and rich resources are ceded to the Queen. This book is an exploration of how such a stunning string of events has happened, and British Columbians continuing attempts to rationalize them.

Talking to Our Selves Reflection, Ignorance, and Agency【電子書籍】[ John M. Doris ]

John M. Doris presents a new account of agency and responsibility, which reconciles our understanding of ourselves as moral agents with psychological research on the unconscious mind. Much philosophical theorizing maintains that the exercise of morally responsible agency consists in judgment and behavior ordered by accurate reflection. On such theories, when human beings are able to direct their lives in the manner philosophers have dignified with the honorific 'agency', it's because they know what they're doing, and why they're doing it. This understanding is compromised by quantities of psychological research on unconscious processing, which suggests that accurate reflection is distressingly uncommon; very often behavior is ordered by surprisingly inaccurate self-awareness. Thus, if agency requires accurate reflection, people seldom exercise agency, and skepticism about agency threatens. To counter the skeptical threat, John M. Doris proposes an alternative theory that requires neither reflection nor accurate self-awareness: he identifies a dialogic form of agency where self-direction is facilitated by exchange of the rationalizations with which people explain and justify themselves to one another. The result is a stoutly interdisciplinary theory sensitive to both what human beings are likeーcreatures with opaque and unruly psychologies-and what they need: an account of agency sufficient to support a practice of moral responsibility.

Ignorance A Case for Scepticism【電子書籍】[ Peter Unger ]

In this controversial volume (originally published in 1975) Peter Unger suggests that, not only can nothing ever be known, but no one can ever have a reason at all for anything. A consequence of this is that we cannot have any realistic emotional ties: it can never be conclusively said that someone is happy or sad about anything. Finally he argues that no one can ever say, let alone believe, that anything is the case. In order to get beyond this apparent bind - and this condition of ignorance - Unger proposes a radical departure from the linguistic and epistemological systems we have become accustomed to. Epistemologists, as well as philosophers of mind and language will undoubtedly find in this study of the limitations of language an invaluable philosophical perspective.

Ignorance Is Not Bliss Never Ignorant Gaining Grammar Educational Revolutionary【電子書籍】[ Zachariah M Wells ]

My husband is loving, caring, strong, brave, loyal, and devoted to what he believes in. I admire him more than anybody because he inspires me so much. He brings out the best in me and he makes me better. If I cant do it I know he can and will, and if he cant he wont stop trying. My husband has been through so much in just twenty seven years, things most people will never have to experience, he has been through and more. Poverty, hunger, loss of loved ones at a very young age, and yet he is still so happy. Optimism is his middle name, the glass is always half full in his eyes. He forgives so easily so he does not carry around the burden of anger like others do. The second to youngest out of eleven kids, he never got the attention he deserved but he didnt let that make him feel less than. I admire my husband because what most men cant do he does with ease. Like loving me and treating me like a queen as he does the other women in his life. He has such a great respect for us it deserves admiration. Religion Is a thing very near and dear to us my husbands religious devotion is something to be reckoned with. His belief system is so strong and unshakeable he makes it easy for me to follow in his footsteps. Most people in and out of my religion have it all wrong, watching others practice my religion you might hate it, but watching my husband you would fall in love. When the going gets tough my husband is there, for me and anyone who needs him. Almost completely selfless you cant help but to love him. A shoulder to cry on, and ear to listen, and an embrace waiting for you if you need it, he is the one to go to in any given situation. If you dont want to be judged or looked down on. He can be counted on every single time. Marrying him, I would definitely have to say was the best decision I have made in my twenty Years on this earth. I dont how I got this far without him. The Role of Creative Ignorance: Portraits of Path Finders and Path Creators【電子書籍】[ P. Formica ]

Traditionally, company experts and outside collaborators innovate by developing the knowledge map. Success or failure of incremental innovation hinges on this path. The Role of Creative Ignorance suggests the knowledge map should be abandoned and replaced with a new methodology, that of creative ignorance. With over 30 years of experience in international economics and entrepreneurship, Piero Formica explores the concept of creative ignorance in combination with path creation and its disruptive effect on entrepreneurship. Using narrative examples of innovators and companies worldwide, he introduces the characteristics of successful path creators that overstep the boundaries set by knowledge maps to open up new, unprecedented routes and connect them each other. In doing so, path creators reveal latent, unexpressed needs of consumers and drive innovation forward.

Perspectives on Ignorance from Moral and Social Philosophy【

This edited collection focuses on the moral and social dimensions of ignoranceーan undertheorized category in analytic philosophy. Contributors address such issues as the relation between ignorance and deception, ignorance as a moral excuse, ignorance as a legal excuse, and the relation between ignorance and moral character. In the moral realm, ignorance is sometimes considered as an excuse; some specific kind of ignorance seems to be implied by a moral character; and ignorance is closely related to moral risk. Ignorance has certain social dimensions as well: it has been claimed to be the engine of science; it seems to be entailed by privacy and secrecy; and it is widely thought to constitute a legal excuse in certain circumstances. Together, these contributions provide a sustained inquiry into the nature of ignorance and the pivotal role it plays in the moral and social domains.

BHM teaching: Whereas La?wi/Levi - Houses of Priesthood, in days of former rain teaches the unified deeds that correspond to the Strength of ALOZAR and develops the OyinZayin Body which is relative to the works of Unity; in the last days the House of La?wi triumphs from the seat in Perizzi (one of 10 LANDS) to declare the full council of Yah?Wah that has been within priest hood of ALOZAR. In the last days of the world, the OyinZayin of ALOZAR bears the fruit from every branch and the state of the last house is greater than former. In the first rains of Yah?Wah, Zeb?wlan dwells according to stead-fastness of Ayithamar. The occupation-endurance of Zeb?wlan is achieved with Ayithamar through which the tent is raised and clothed in the last days whereby Zeb?wlan appears in the third chair, for what is sown now appears in the third day. The states of becoming are associated with the birth order of the houses, as La?wi is third; Zeb?wlan is sixth, dan first, and Gad second, inherently in Nephetli to serve in the first rain the priesthood of Aviyahua and then as servant to speak the Words of Knowledge through La?wi of latter rain. States of placements are the fulfillment of all spoken from the beginning.

The Aspect of Ignorance in Golding's Lord of the Flies【電子書籍】[ Gesa Giesing ]

Seminar paper from the year 1998 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0 (A), University of Leipzig (Institute for Anglistics), course: Literature from a Child's Perspective, language: English, abstract: The Author's Life and Work Born in 1911 in St. Columb Minor, Cornwall, William Gerald Golding spent his childhood in an area of historical wealth. In all his life, he would never leave South England for a longer period of time. Golding attended the Marlborough Grammar School in Wiltshire, where his father was teaching. For his son, Alec Golding embodied rationality and knowledge. Even as a child William Golding did a lot of reading. Some of his favourites were Tarzan of the Apes (E. R. Burroughs), Coral Island (R. M. Ballantyne) and adventure stories by Jules Verne. These books portray man as basically good and fighting the evils brought upon by society. At the age of twelve, Golding decided to become a writer. He made early, ambitious attempts at writing. So he planned a twelve-volume work on trade unions of which not more than the first sentence ever was completed. Initially, his studies at college weren't promising, either. As his parents had intended him to make a career as a microscopist, he began reading sciences at the Brasenose College in Oxford in 1930. But soon he felt that these rational subjects were not what he desired for and that 'a career as a writer was inevitable' (Contemporary Writers 1). Hence he changed to literature and graduated from Oxford as a Bachelor of Arts. Neither did his Poems, published in 1934, nor the four years he spent acting and writing in London bring him satisfaction and success. After getting married in 1939, he took up teaching at a boys' school in order to earn enough money for a living. Yet, again, he didn't feel satisfied, but considered teaching a chore. In 1940 he joined the Royal Navy and took part in antisubmarine and antiaircraft operations. As a naval officer he was involved in D-Day. This six years of military service changed Golding's concept of man's nature. The atrocities of war he had witnessed contradicted his belief in man's perfectibility and in man's basic innocence. In his essay 'Fable' he states that 'anyone who moved through these years without understanding that man produces evil as a bee produces honey, must have been blind or sick in the head', a sentence which has been cited by all his critics (e.g. McCarron 1-2) and which has branded Golding a pessimist. Accepting this term first, Golding had a hard time getting rid of it again.

Good Faith and Truthful Ignorance A Case of Transatlantic Bigamy【電子書籍】[ Alexandra Parma Cook ]

Good Faith and Truthful Ignorance uncovers from history the fascinating and strange story of Spanish explorer Francisco Noguerol de Ulloa. in 1556, accompanied by his second wife, Francisco returned to his home in Spain after a profitable twenty-year sojourn in the new world of Peru. However, unlike most other rich conquistadores who returned to the land of their birth, Francisco was not allowed to settle into a life of leisure. Instead, he was charged with bigamy and illegal shipment of silver, was arrested and imprisoned. Francisco’s first wife (thought long dead) had filed suit in Spain against her renegade husband.
So begins the labyrinthine legal tale and engrossing drama of an explorer and his two wives, skillfully reconstructed through the expert and original archival research of Alexandra Parma Cook and Noble David Cook. Drawing on the remarkable records from the trial, the narrative of Francisco’s adventures provides a window into daily life in sixteenth-century Spain, as well as the mentalit? and experience of conquest and settlement of the New World. Told from the point of view of the conquerors, Francisco’s story reveals not only the lives of the middle class and minor nobility but also much about those at the lower rungs of the social order and relations between the sexes.
In the tradition of Carlo Ginzberg’s The Cheese and the Worms and Natalie Zemon Davis’ The Return of Martin Guerre, Good Faith and Truthful Ignorance illuminates an historical periodーthe world of sixteenth-century Spain and Peruーthrough the wonderful and unusual story of one man and his two wives.
