**SUNDAY TIMES AND GUARDIAN BOOKS OF THE YEAR 2017

'Comprehensive and compelling ... A nuanced, landmark study that has deservedly won plaudits from both Palestinian and Israeli historians' Justin Marozzi, The Times**

A century after Britain's Balfour Declaration promised a Jewish 'national home' in Palestine, veteran Guardian journalist Ian Black has produced a major new history of one of the most polarising conflicts of the modern age.

Drawing on a wide range of sources - from declassified documents to oral testimonies and his own decades of reporting - Enemies and Neighbours brings much-needed perspective and balance to the long and unresolved struggle between Arabs and Jews in the Holy Land.

Beginning in the final years of Ottoman ruleand the British Mandate period, when Zionist immigration transformed Palestine in the face of mounting Arab opposition, the book re-examines the origins of what was a doomed relationship from the start. It sheds fresh light on critical events such as the Arab rebellion of the 1930s; Israel's independence and the Palestinian catastrophe (Nakba in Arabic) of 1948; the watershed of the 1967 war; two Intifadas; the Oslo Accords and Israel's shift to the right. It traces how - after five decades of occupation, ever-expanding Jewish settlements and the construction of the West Bank 'separation wall' - hopes for a two-state solution have all but disappeared, and explores what the future might hold.

Yet Black also goes beyond the most newsworthy events - wars, violence and peace initiatives - to capture thereality of everyday life on the ground in Jerusalem and Hebron, Tel Aviv,Ramallah, Haifa and Gaza, for both sides of an unequal struggle. Lucid, timelyand gripping, Enemies and Neighbours illuminates a bitter conflict that shows no sign of ending - which is why it is so essential that we understand it.

Eight Homilies Against the Jews【電子書籍】[ John Chrysostom ]

In "Eight Homilies Against the Jews," John Chrysostom, one of the most influential Church Fathers, presents a passionate and polemical treatise addressing the theological and social tensions between early Christians and Jews in the late fourth century. Written in a rhetorical style, rich with oratorical flourish, Chrysostom employs scriptural exegesis and vivid imagery to critique Jewish practices and beliefs, while simultaneously advocating for a distinct Christian identity. This work reflects the broader context of a post-Constantinian society where Christianity was becoming increasingly dominant, yet faced pressures to establish its theological legitimacy, often at the expense of its Jewish roots. John Chrysostom's background as a trained orator and his ascetic lifestyle significantly influenced his theological outlook. His role as Archbishop of Constantinople placed him at the center of ecclesiastical power and controversy, providing him with a platform to articulate his views on religious matters. Chrysostom's vehement critiques are informed by both his pastoral concerns for the Christian community and the sociopolitical climate of his time, ultimately reflecting his desire for conversion rather than merely condemnation. This work is essential for readers seeking to understand the complexities of early Christian-Jewish relations and the rhetorical strategies employed by Chrysostom. Scholars and lay readers alike will find value in delving into his intricate arguments, as the homilies expose the challenges of maintaining faith in an era of theological division, making it a compelling read for those interested in religious history, rhetoric, and the evolution of Christian thought.

In "The Antiquities of the Jews," Flavius Josephus meticulously chronicles the history, culture, and religion of the Jewish people from creation to the Jewish War (66-73 CE). Written in a lucid and engaging style, this monumental work employs a combination of historiography and theological reflection, situating Jewish tradition within the broader tapestry of Greco-Roman history. Josephus deftly navigates complex themes, employing rhetorical techniques typical of Hellenistic literature, which enhances his narrative and appeals to a diverse audience, while also defending Judaism against its critics, notably Romans who lacked cultural understanding of Jewish customs. Born to a priestly family in Jerusalem around 37 CE, Josephus was deeply embedded in the mosaic of Jewish society. His firsthand experiences as a soldier and historian during the tumultuous Jewish War instilled in him a commitment to recording Jewish heritage and identity. Victimized by the very conflict he sought to explain, Josephus's work reflects both his desire to preserve the past and his efforts to serve as an intermediary between two worldsーJewish and Romanーduring a pivotal moment in history. "The Antiquities of the Jews" is essential reading for anyone interested in the intersection of history, religion, and culture. Scholars, students, and general readers alike will benefit from Josephus's insightful narratives that not only illuminate the Jewish historical experience but also enrich our understanding of the ancient world, making it a monumental legacy of Jewish resilience.

The ^AMediterranean Diaspora in Late Antiquity What Christianity Cost the Jews【電子書籍】[ Ross Shepard Kraemer ]

The Mediterranean Diaspora in Late Antiquity examines the fate of Jews living in the Mediterranean Jewish diaspora after the Roman emperor Constantine threw his patronage to the emerging orthodox (Nicene) Christian churches. By the fifth century, much of the rich material evidence for Greek and Latin-speaking Jews in the diaspora diminishes sharply. Ross Shepard Kraemer argues that this increasing absence of evidence is evidence of increasing absence of Jews themselves. Literary sources, late antique Roman laws, and archaeological remains illuminate how Christian bishops and emperors used a variety of tactics to coerce Jews into conversion: violence, threats of violence, deprivation of various legal rights, exclusion from imperial employment, and others. Unlike other non-orthodox Christians, Jews who resisted conversion were reluctantly tolerated, perhaps because of beliefs that Christ's return required their conversion. In response to these pressures, Jews leveraged political and social networks for legal protection, retaliated with their own acts of violence, and sometimes became Christians. Some may have emigrated to regions where imperial laws were more laxly enforced, or which were under control of non-orthodox (Arian) Christians. Increasingly, they embraced forms of Jewish practice that constructed tighter social boundaries around them. The Mediterranean Diaspora in Late Antiquity concludes that by the beginning of the seventh century, the orthodox Christianization of the Roman Empire had cost diaspora Jews--and all non-orthodox persons, including Christians--dearly.
