Southern Min Comparative Phonology and Subgrouping【電子書籍】[ Bit-Chee Kwok ]

Southern M?n refers to a group of Chinese dialects spoken mainly in Southeast China and Taiwan. This group occupies a special position in the study of Chinese dialects, not only because of its large population of speakers (around 48 million) but also because of its preservation of various archaic linguistic features long lost in other dialects. In this book, B.C. Kwok applies the comparative method on new fieldwork data to reconstruct the common sound system of ‘Proto-Southern M?n’, from which all modern Southern M?n varieties emerged. The syllable initials, finals and tonal categories of Proto-Southern M?n are illustrated by more than 500 examples. In addition, this book offers an alternative view on the subgrouping of 12 Southern M?n varieties. It proposes that the Qu?nzh?u dialect and the Zh?ngzh?u dialect form the two main branches of the dialect group. This book should be of great interest to advanced students and scholars in the fields of historical linguistics and Chinese dialectology.

Online Dating as A Strategic Game Why and How Men in Hong Kong Use QQ to Chase Women in Mainland China【電子書籍】[ Maurice Kwok-to Choi ]

Based on a study using online ethnography as the major research method, this book explains why and how men in Hong Kong use QQーan online instant messengerーto “chase” women in mainland China, especially in the neighboring city of Shenzhen. Chasing women through QQ is a reciprocal exchange process during which the resources to be exchanged in the interaction are not negotiated. Rather, the men provide resources to the women, hoping for rewards in return that are not guaranteed. This characteristic of the exchange makes men who chase women through QQ very strategic in their action. They try to maximize the rewards and minimize the costs by adopting myriad strategies, such as constructing an attractive online identity by strategic self-presentation. The role of emotions in the exchange process is also examined. Men learn the emotional norms through the online forum, but sometimes it is difficult for them to control their emotions; some men fall in love when they are not supposed to. As it happens, they have failed to calculate the costs and rewards rationally in that they may provide too many resources to the women without getting enough rewards in return.

This book provides original insights into the thought processes, motivations, desires, anxieties and risks of Hong Kong men seeking short-term sexual relations with women on the mainland. These insights are highly relevant to our understanding of the quickly evolving use of social media, a phenomenon of worldwide importance and deep implications.

Augmenting Employee Trust and Cooperation【電子書籍】[ Andrei O. J. Kwok ]

This book is an essential guide for academics and practitioners to understand employees’ differences in personality and how best to motivate them accordingly. The authors provide an in-depth perspective of how organizations can better prepare for the new realities of the workplace. Amidst the war for talent and a continually evolving workplace that has reduced employee psychological attachment, employees prefer to be treated as individuals with the expectation of individual recognition and reward. The authors draw from their personal, corporate, and research experience by combining interdisciplinary perspectives (organizational behavior, human resource management, psychology, sociology, economics) to offer holistic insights into individual expectancy and motivation integral to a successful employer-employee interaction.

Interestingly, research remains lacking on the effects of excessive extrinsic rewards on trust and cooperation. Hence, this book fulfills significant gaps in vital areas that existing studies have not yet sufficiently addressed. These areas are psychological contract, excessive extrinsic rewards, and individual differences in personality (locus of control and general trust). The authors use scenario-based laboratory experiments to examine the moderating effects of locus of control and general trust that underscore employee expectations. The differential effects contribute to insight on behavioral outcomes in the workplace that result from employee perception, personality, and intention towards the provision of rewards.

Consequently, the book dispels the discrepancies between economists and psychologists about the efficacy of rewards. Findings demonstrate that although excessive extrinsic rewards augment all employees’ trust and cooperation, it is vital for employers to reward selectively those who are most deserving. Findings offer a deeper understanding of the saliency, efficacy, and judiciousness of excessive extrinsic rewards. Employers will benefit by understanding how best to tailor rewards to motivate each employee.

Chinese Ibsenism Reinventions of Women, Class and Nation【電子書籍】[ Kwok-kan Tam ]

This book is a study of the relation between theatre art and ideology in the Chinese experimentations with new selfhood as a result of Ibsen’s impact. It also explores Ibsenian notions of self, women and gender in China and provides an illuminating study of Chinese theatre as a public sphere in the dissemination of radical ideas. Ibsen is the major source of modern Chinese selfhood which carries notions of personal and social liberation and has exerted great impacts on Chinese revolutions since the beginning of the twentieth century. Ibsen’s idea of the self as an individual has led to various experimentations in theatre, film and fiction to project new notions of selfhood, in particular women’s selfhood, throughout the history of modern China. Even today, China is experimenting with Ibsen’s notions of gender, power, individualism and self.

Kwok-kan Tam is Chair Professor of English and Dean of Humanities and Social Science at the Hang Seng University ofHong Kong. He was Head (2012-18) and is currently a member of the International Ibsen Committee, University of Oslo. He is a Foundation Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of the Humanities. He has held teaching, research and administrative positions in various institutions, including the East-West Center, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Open University of Hong Kong.
Incorporating research carried out over the last twenty years, this book documents the personal and collective responses of Chinese migrants and refugees to the prejudice and discrimination they have experienced. Using case studies of Chinese communities in Canada, Chan explores the different defence mechanisms Chinese migrants have created in order to escape the systemic and institutionalized discrimination they face. In particular, the book analyzes Chinese entrepreneurship, arguing that it is a collective response to blocked opportunities in host societies.

Drawing upon empirical and theoretical literature on the sociology of race and ethnic relations, the book stresses the variety in Chinese culture and its ability to exploit an emergent ethnicity as individuals, groups and communities.

The New York Times

Postcolonial Politics and Theology Unraveling Empire for a Global World【電子書籍】[ Kwok Pui-lan ]

Postcolonial Politics and Theology seeks to reform and reimagine the field of political theologyーuprooting it from the colonial soilーusing the comparative lenses of postcolonial politics and theology to bring attention to the realities of the Global South. Kwok Pui-lan traces the history of the political impacts of Western theological development, especially developments in the U.S. context, and the need to shift these interlocking fields toward non-Western traditions in theory and practice.

A special focus of the book is on the changing sociopolitical realities of American Empire and Sino-American competition, illustrated in Donald Trump's slogan of "Make America Great Again" and Xi Jinping’s hope for a “China Dream.” The shifting of U.S. and Asian relationships highlights the need to move our theological and political categories away from a vision of strongman domination and toward a postmodern, postcolonial, and transnational world, especially exemplified in the Asia Pacific context.

Throughout, Kwok overturns the idea of centering one cultural framework and marginalizing others in favor of living into a multiplicity of deeply contextual theologies. She explores how these theologies are being developed in global, postcolonial contexts, through struggles for democracy and civil disobedience in Hong Kong, by efforts to reclaim selfhood and sexual identity from exploitative colonial desire, through the work of interreligious solidarity and peacebuilding, and in the practice of earth care in the face of ecological crisis.
