Growing Up Levittown: In a Time of Conformity, Controversy and Cultural Crisis【電子書籍】[ Steve Bergsman ]

Intellectuals and critics attacked Levittown unmercifully, essentially calling it a boring environment that crushed the spirit of its population. Popular authors, such as Richard Yates, author of Revolutionary Road, used the modern suburb as a metaphor for creative sterility.
When Pete Seeger sang, “Little boxes on the hillside, Little boxes made of tickytacky; Little boxes on the hillside, little boxes all the same,” everyone knew he was talking about Levittown and all that it begot.
As it turned out, the intellectuals and the critics got it all so very wrong from the start.
Not only wasn’t Levittown dullsville, but a surprising number of creative people passed through here, including songwriter Ellie Greenwich, singers Eddie Money and Billy Joel, Zippie The Pinhead cartoonist Bill Griffith, children’s book illustrator Jon Buller, radio host John Gambling, TV political commentator Bill O’Reilly, Maureen Tucker and Sterling Morrison of the Velvet Underground (the house band for Andy Warhol’s factory), and Steve Bergsman, journalist and author.
Steve Bergsman grew up in Levittown during those early years and looking back now as an aging baby boomer, he thought it a wonderful place to have spent a childhood. Growing Up Levittown: In a Time of Conformity, Controversy and Cultural Crisis is a love letter to this quintessential suburb.
Juxtaposed against a prevailing history of criticism and literary slander, Growing Up Levittown is a memoir of a happy childhood.

A story of a young nonconformist growing up in America’s second planned housing community, Levittown portrays life in the late 1970s with a sardonic eye trained on the country’s time-honored traditions and questionable preoccupations. Set against a backdrop of classic rock, NASCAR and elementary school life, Levittown is the tale of a young boy named Michael trying to find himself amid a swirling tide of scripted patriotism and false hopes.

“Poignant and provocative, Levittown pulls no punches as it unpacks familial dysfunction and skewers the American suburban dream through adolescent eyes. Though rooted in ’70s malaise, it still offers hope for a better tomorrow, provided one goes their own way instead of following the herd.” ー Martin Penn-Woods

Levittown Two Families, One Tycoon, and the Fight for Civil Rights in America's Legendary Suburb【電子書籍】[ David Kushner ]

The explosive true story of the first African-American family to move into one of America's most iconic suburbs, Levittown, Pennsylvania.

In the decade after World War II, one entrepreneurial family helped thousands of people buy into the American dream of owning a home, not just any home, but a good one, with all the modern conveniences. The Levitts--two brothers, William and Alfred, and their father, Abe--pooled their talents in land use, architecture, and sales to create story book town with affordable little houses. They laid out the welcome mat, but not to everyone. Levittown had a whites-only policy.

This is the story that unfolded in Levittown, PA, one unseasonably hot summer in 1957 on a quiet street called Deepgreen Lane. There, a white Jewish Communist family named Wechsler secretly arranged for a black family, the Myers, to buy the little pink house next door. What followed was an explosive summer of violence that would transform their lives, and the nation. It would lead to the downfall of a titan, and the integration of the most famous suburb in the world. It's a story of hope and fear, invention and rebellion, and the power that comes when ordinary people take an extraordinary stand.

In Levittown’s Shadow Poverty in America’s Wealthiest Postwar Suburb【電子書籍】[ Tim Keogh ]

Named one of the best nonfiction books of 2023 by Publishers Weekly!

There is a familiar narrative about American suburbs: after 1945, white residents left cities for leafy, affluent subdivisions and the prosperity they seemed to embody. In Levittown’s Shadow tells us there’s more to this story, offering an eye-opening account of diverse, poor residents living and working in those same neighborhoods. Tim Keogh shows how public policies produced both suburban plenty and deprivationーand why ignoring suburban poverty doomed efforts to reduce inequality.

Keogh focuses on the suburbs of Long Island, home to Levittown, often considered the archetypal suburb. Here military contracts subsidized well-paid employment welding airplanes or filing paperwork, while weak labor laws impoverished suburbanites who mowed lawns, built houses, scrubbed kitchen floors, and stocked supermarket shelves. Federal mortgage programs helped some families buy orderly single-family homes and enter the middle class but also underwrote landlord efforts to cram poor families into suburban attics, basements, and sheds. Keogh explores how policymakers ignored suburban inequality, addressing housing segregation between cities and suburbs rather than suburbanites’ demands for decent jobs, housing, and schools.

By turning our attention to the suburban poor, Keogh reveals poverty wasn’t just an urban problem but a suburban one, too. In Levittown’s Shadow deepens our understanding of suburbia’s historyーand points us toward more effective ways to combat poverty today.

Growing Up in Levittown: Again【電子書籍】[ Charlie Albacore ]

You’ll find this an engrossing story. Live your life all over again but knowing what you know now. Molly Maguire is a charmer. Going to bed 4 October 2020, she awakes, Monday 9 October 1962. Letters to President Kennedy telling him about Dallas, his affairs, and classified secret missiles in Cuba follow. Explaining her letters to her parents and the Secret Service who want to know why a Molly Maguire writes letters to the President predicting his demise, begin her problems.

Molly also tells the neighbor, Karl McGill about how they marry in the local Catholic Church. What follows is a pleasant, absorbing stroll down 1960’s Nostalgia Road. Follow Molly as she sometimes wildly and sometimes wistfully romps down Huckleberry Lane, smelling the aromas, casting her eyes upon the flowers, reciting the rhymes and witticisms of 1960’s youth and climbs that apple tree, again, with Karl. Molly remembers our reality since 1962 as a dream. School no longer a problem, she drags Karl, Dominic Pancetti, the misunderstood child misdiagnosed as school bully and his girlfriend with her into adulthood, kicking a screaming.

Growing up in Levittown, Again is an Alternate History, a Coming of Age, and a fictionalized auto-biographical novel about the author. I grew up on Huckleberry Lane in Levittown Pennsylvania in the early ‘60s, joined the Navy in the early ‘70s, and went to Kent State University in the early ‘80s. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and studied Counseling at the graduate level.

Levittown Through a Boy’S View【電子書籍】[ LostLenny ]

This novel starts at the very beginning in New York City when the Nilsson family moves all of their possessions to a brand new housing development on Long Island. Then, the novel shifts a few years ahead to our hero's first experiences in kindergarten in a rented room of an old Protestant Church. As the novel moves on, our hero continues his grade school education through sixth grade in a formal building where Lester is constantly confronted with other children his age; some become close friends, some are bullies, and others mold his life as our hero interacts with him. Not all the scenes in the story are school related. Many deal in other areas where a child's imagination and a parent's involvement can turn a simple act like losing a rubber boot down a street drain into an interesting dilemma. Often these situations involve people from other walks of life: policeman, construction people, strangers. 'Levittown' was written to entertain the reader, and I have purposely kept the pace of the plot moving so the reader will not dwell on one thing for too long. However, I hope that the reader will agree with me and our hero that Levittown was and I hope, is still a child's paradise.

Levittown was created in Bucks County outside of Philadelphia in 1951. As one of the largest "planned communities" in America, this book's superb collection of history and photographs illustrates the birth and growth of this unique area.

In 1951, Levittown was created in Bucks County outside of Philadelphia by builder pioneers Levitt and Sons. Dubbed the largest and "most perfectly planned" community in America, it featured single-family homes, schools, churches, shopping centers, and swimming pools. A symbol of the "American Dream," Levittown defined the phenomenon of post-World War II suburban developments, which for the first time gave working- and middle-class families the option of affordable, detached houses outside congested urban neighborhoods. Levittown was a melting pot, attracting people from cities, rural areas, and all walks of life, including many World War II veterans with young families. Houses came fully equipped with appliances and landscaping and started at $9,000. Levittown's superb collection of history and photographs illustrates the birth and growth of this unique area, explores the community that resulted, and features residents' personal memories of the golden years.

The Levittowners Ways of Life and Politics in a New Suburban Community【電子書籍】[ Herbert J. Gans ]

In 1955, Levitt and Sons purchased most of Willingboro Township, New Jersey and built 11,000 homes. This, their third Levittown, became the site of one of urban sociology's most famous community studies, Herbert J. Gans's The Levittowners. The product of two years of living in Levittown, the work chronicles the invention of a new community and its major institutions, the beginnings of social and political life, and the former city residents' adaptation to suburban living. Gans uses his research to reject the charge that suburbs are sterile and pathological. First published in 1967, The Levittowners is a classic of participant-observer ethnography that also paints a sensitive portrait of working-class and lower-middle-class life in America. This new edition features a foreword by Harvey Molotch that reflects on Gans's challenges to conventional wisdom.
