For over forty years, Bel Mooney has been one of this country's best-loved journalists and authors, and her hugely popular Daily Mail advice column reaches six million people every week. Far from being a detached and abstract figure, Bel doesn't shy away from sharing her own life experiences of grief, forgiveness and joy with her devoted readers, making her column at once both distinctly personal and thoroughly universal in relevance. A lifeline for many, some of her wise, compassionate and unflinchingly honest words of good counsel are gathered together here for the first time. This selection includes problems, responses and some of the wide-ranging mini essays that appear in the Mail as 'And Finally'. Punctuated by some of Bel's favourite uplifting quotations, this collection also includes 'what happened next' with some of those who received Bel's wisdom - be it about love, loss, break-ups or breakdowns. A heartfelt and inspirational collection, full of valuable insights and prefixed by a wide-ranging and candid introduction reflecting on what being an advice columnist has taught her, Bel Mooney's Lifelines is a book readers will return to again and again, each time discovering something new in the process.

Lifelines A Novel【電子書籍】[ Heidi Diehl ]

“A graceful, attentive, and beautiful debut.” ー George Saunders

For fans of Meg Wolitzer and Maggie Shipstead: a sweeping debut novel following an American artist who returns to Germanyーwhere she fell in love and had a child decades earlierーto confront her past at her former mother-in-law’s funeral

It’s 1971 when Louise leaves Oregon for D?sseldorf, a city grappling with its nation’s horrific recent history, to study art. Soon she’s embroiled in a scene dramatically different from the one at home, thanks in large part to Dieter, a mercurial musician. Their romance ignites quickly, but life gets in the way: an unplanned pregnancy, hasty marriage, the tense balance of their creative ambitions, andーfinally, fatallyーa family secret that shatters Dieter, and drives Louise home.

But in 2008 she’s headed to Dieter’s mother’s funeral. She never returned to Germany, and has since remarried, had another daughter, and built a life in Oregon. As she flies into the heart of her past, she reckons with the choices she made, and the ones she didn’t, just as her familyーcurrent and formerーmust consider how Louise’s life has shaped their own, for better and for worse.

Exquisitely balanced, expansive yet wonderfully intimate, Lifelines explores the indelible ties of family; the shape art, history, and nationality give to our lives; and the ways in which we are forever evolving, with each step we take, with each turn of the Earth.

Lifelines Clinical Perspectives on Suicide【

Suicide is a source of endless disquiet. One of the few fatal consequences of psychiatric illness, it is a threat to patients, and a vexation to therapists that puts clinical judgment to the ultimate test. It arouses countertransference reactions of unusual intensity-helplessness and guilt when the suicide is successful; anxiety and anger when it is used as a manipulative tool. For as Samuel Johnson was aware when he com mented that many "commit suicide, as a passionate man will stab an other," it is not only an escape from hopeless despair but an expression of the most violent rage. To all those who care for suicidal patients, this book will come as a welcome guide. Each of the authors represented here brings a wealth of clinical expe rience to bear on the subject under discussion. The psychological and bi ological determinants of depression are simply and clearly delineated to provide a basis for understanding the processes underlying suicide, for judging its likelihood, and for preventing its occurrence. Detailed de scriptions of the variety of psychological and pharmacological treatments of the suicidal patient are complemented by extensive discussions of the several settings in which such patients will be encountered, whether these be an in-patient unit, an out-patient clinic, a medical ward, an emergency room, or a private office.

In Lifelines, Tim Palmer addresses the fate of our waterways. Lifelines A Novel【電子書籍】[ Eleanor Bertin ]

Life had been going swimmingly until biologist Dr. Robert Fielding was bewildered by a squall that still threatens to shipwreck him. Tormented by the losses in his life, he finds a dozen reasons why he doesn't need the friendship of his new neighbour, Anna Fawcett. After all, the senior and her disabled son aren’t exactly in his league.

But how is he supposed to turn down fresh cinnamon buns? And Robert hasn’t bargained on his neighbour’s innocent, probing questions. They erode his faith in naturalism and collide with his assumptions about life, love, and truth. Have his foundational beliefs been the cause of his personal losses? As he searches for answers, Anna's example of loving integrity keeps him coming back. Or maybe it's her homemade pies. Yet to risk re-thinking his core convictions for a chance at personal peace would expose his soul and tear open an old wound.

Others in the neighbourhood, too, are under Anna’s thrall a teacher facing a crisis pregnancy, a crusty cat-lady, a cancer-ridden conspiracy theorist, a Cambodian immigrant family. Each is touched by the power of her obscure and ordinary life.

About the Author:

In a fit of optimism at age eleven, Eleanor Bertin began her first novel by numbering a stack of 100 pages. Only two of them were ever filled with words. Lifelines, her first completed novel, was shortlisted in the 2015 Word Alive Press Free Publishing Contest.

Eleanor holds a college diploma in Communications and worked in agricultural journalism until the birth of her first child. The family eventually grew to include one daughter and six sons (the youngest with Down syndrome) whom she home-educated for twenty-five years.

Eleanor and her husband live amidst the ongoing renovation of a century home in central Alberta where she blogs about sometimes-elusive contentment at jewelofcontentment.wordpress.com.

SYNER-G: Typology Definition and Fragility Functions for Physical Elements at Seismic Risk Buildings, Lifelines, Transportation Networks and Critical Facilities【

Fragility functions constitute an emerging tool for the probabilistic seismic risk assessment of buildings, infrastructures and lifeline systems. The work presented in this book is a partial product of a European Union funded research project SYNER-G (FP7 Theme 6: Environment) where existing knowledge has been reviewed in order to extract the most appropriate fragility functions for the vulnerability analysis and loss estimation of the majority of structures and civil works exposed to earthquake hazard. Results of other relevant European projects and international initiatives are also incorporated in the book. In several cases new fragility and vulnerability functions have been developed in order to better represent the specific characteristics of European elements at risk. Several European and non-European institutes and Universities collaborated efficiently to capitalize upon existing knowledge. State-of-the-art methods are described, existing fragility curves are reviewed and, where necessary, new ones are proposed for buildings, lifelines, transportation infrastructures as well as for utilities and critical facilities. Taxonomy and typology definitions are synthesized and the treatment of related uncertainties is discussed.

A fragility function manager tool and fragility functions in electronic form are provided on extras.springer.com.

Audience

The book aims to be a standard reference on the fragility functions to be used for the seismic vulnerability and probabilistic risk assessment of the most important elements at risk. It is of particular interest to earthquake engineers, scientists and researchers working in the field of earthquake risk assessment, as well as the insurance industry, civil protection and emergency management agencies.

Migration and Families in East and North Europe Translocal Lifelines【

This book explores the phenomenon of familyhood across borders, examining the experience of translocal familyhood and the manner in which lifelines in and between countries are formed when individual family members spend long periods away from home. Drawing on long-term ethnographic research, it considers the emotions, social relations, materialities and discourses that occur within family lives between Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Romania, Russia and Sweden. With attention to the ways in which gender, generation, class and geography create and reinforce inequalities, strengths and vulnerabilities within and between families, it combines ethnographic, descriptive work with shorter photography-based chapters in order to allow textual and visual methods to complement one another. As such, it will appeal to scholars of sociology, geography and anthropology with interests in migration, transnationalism and the sociology of the family.

Lifelines of Our Society A Global History of Infrastructure【電子書籍】[ Dirk van Laak ]

A comprehensive history and examination of global infrastructures and the outsized role they play in our lives.

Infrastructure is essential to defining how the public functions, yet there is little public knowledge regarding why and how it became today’s strongest global force over government and individual lives. Who should build and maintain infrastructures? How are they to be protected? And why are they all in such bad shape? In Lifelines of Our Society, Dirk van Laak offers broad audiences a history of global infrastructuresーfocused on Western societies, over the past two hundred yearsーthat considers all their many paradoxes. He illustrates three aspects of infrastructure: their development, their influence on nation building and colonialism, and finally, how individuals internalize infrastructure and increasingly become not only its user but regulator.

Beginning with public works, infrastructure in the nineteenth century carried the hope that it would facilitate world peace. Van Laak shows how, instead, it transformed to promote consumerism’s individual freedoms and our notions of work, leisure, and fulfillment. Lifelines of Our Society reveals how today’s infrastructure is both a source and a reflection of concentrated power and economic growth, which takes the form of cities under permanent construction. Symbols of power, van Laak describes, come with vulnerability, and this book illustrates the dual nature of infrastructure’s potential to hold nostalgia and inspire fear, to ease movement and govern ideas, and to bring independence to the nuclear family and control governments of the Global South.

Memos from the Besieged City Lifelines for Cultural Sustainability【電子書籍】[ Djelal Kadir ]

Memos from the Besieged City argues for the institutional and cultural relevance of literary study through foundational figures, from the 1200s to today, who defied precarious circumstances to make significant contributions to literacy and civilization in the face of infelicitous human acts. Focusing on historically vital crossroadsーBaghdad, Florence, Byzantium, Istanbul, Rome, Paris, New York, Mexico City, Jerusalem, Beijing, Stockholm, WarsawーKadir looks at how unconventional and nonconformist writings define literacy, culture, and intellectual commitment. Inspired by political refugee and literary scholar Erich Auerbach's path-breaking Mimesis, and informed by late twentieth-century ideological and methodological upheavals, the book reflects on literacy and dissidence at a moment when literary disciplines, canons, and theories are being reassessed under the pressure of globalization and transculturation. At the forefront of an ethical turn in the comparative analysis of cultures and their literary legacies, it reminds us of the best humanity can produce.

This raw and honest poetry collection depicts the reality that Tania Bryant sees through the lens of her everyday life. She believes strongly that she should not mold herself or her opinions according to someone else's liking, but to be able to give her own truthful viewpoint on things, revealing an angle of understanding that others may not see. Her poems are portraits of love, laughter, hate, family, and other emotion-laden topics. There are layers to her poetry-how she feels and what she has experienced are all laid out for those

with open eyes and ears. We as individuals are not perfect. We all have our flaws, and that is what makes us who we are. Each poem reflects who Tania truly is, and her hope is to let others know they are not alone in their feelings.

Our Majestic Rivers: Nature's Lifelines Part-2【電子書籍】[ Amrahs Hseham ]

These rivers are not just watercourses; they are the lifeblood of communities, shaping identities, economies, and daily existence. The characters in these stories are as diverse as the landscapes they inhabitーfishermen casting nets into the Mekong, traders navigating the Congo's bends, and poets seeking inspiration along the Seine. Through these narratives, we glimpse the shared humanity that transcends borders, a reminder that the currents of our shared experiences run deep.

Yet, amid the richness of these stories, we confront the environmental epics that unfold along the banks of the great rivers. The challenges of pollution, damming, and climate change echo through the narratives, underscoring the delicate balance between human progress and the preservation of these lifelines. The Yangtze, witnessing China's rapid industrialization, bears the weight of environmental consequences, while the Colorado, once a powerful force in shaping the American West, grapples with the demands of agriculture and urbanization.

The narratives within this collection do not shy away from addressing the environmental perils faced by these rivers. Rather, they serve as a call to action, urging readers to contemplate the impact of their choices on these natural wonders and the communities that depend on them. Through these tales, we confront the realities of a changing planet and the imperative of responsible stewardship.

"Our Majestic Rivers: Nature’s Lifelines" is an invitation to reflectionーa journey into the heart of landscapes, cultures, and the human spirit. As readers navigate these narratives, they are encouraged to ponder the symbiotic relationship between humanity and the rivers that have been witness to our triumphs and tribulations.
