A London Life (1888)【電子書籍】[ Henry James ]

This early work by Henry James was originally published in 1888 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. Henry James was born in New York City in 1843. One of thirteen children, James had an unorthodox early education, switching between schools, private tutors and private reading.. James published his first story, 'A Tragedy of Error', in the Continental Monthly in 1864, when he was twenty years old. In 1876, he emigrated to London, where he remained for the vast majority of the rest of his life, becoming a British citizen in 1915. From this point on, he was a hugely prolific author, eventually producing twenty novels and more than a hundred short stories and novellas, as well as literary criticism, plays and travelogues. Amongst James's most famous works are The Europeans (1878), Daisy Miller (1878), Washington Square (1880), The Bostonians (1886), and one of the most famous ghost stories of all time, The Turn of the Screw (1898). We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

A London Life is one of James’s longest tales, in fact it falls into the category which he labelled the nouvelle. It seems that in writing it the author’s attitude to his heroine gradually became more critical and in the finished text a number of the other characters try to make Laura Wing realize that her standards are just too high and that she applies them too rigidly for modern society.

A London Life is a novella by Henry James, first published in Scribner's Magazine in 1888. The plot revolves around a crumbling marriage and its impact on many other people, especially Laura Wing, the sister of the soon-to-be-divorced wife. Laura is a classic Jamesian "central consciousness," whose reflections and emotions color the presentation of the storyline and the other characters. The tale is notable for its straightforward, even hard-edged approach to sexuality and divorce. This might reflect the influence of French naturalism on James during the 1880s. The East End Four Centuries of London Life【電子書籍】[ Alan Palmer ]

The East End as an idea is known to every Londoner, and to many others, though its boundaries are vague. Alan Palmer's historical overview of the area (first published in 1989 and revised in 2000) takes its extent to be the traditional limits of Hackney and Tower Hamlets, Hoxton and Shoreditch, the docklands and their overflow into West Ham and East Ham. And at the heart of the East End lies Spitalfields, home to a transient, often radical and hard-working population.
Though it is often seen as London's centre of industry and poverty, in comparison to the well-to-do West End, the East End has always been a diverse place: in the seventeenth century, Hackney was a pleasant country retreat; Stepney and the docklands a bustling world of sailors and merchants. The book traces the development of the area from these roots, through the nineteenth century - when the East End became notorious as the home of radicals, exiled revolutionaries and the very poor, its crowded streets the scene of murder, riot and cholera -to the bombing of the first and second world war; and the subsequent decline and regeneration of the twentieth century.

Classic Victorian erotica from 1883. Charlie and his two cousins are on a singular course of debauchery in the run up to starting their studies. A wild sponateous Bacchanalian orgy in a London park, a wildly perverse night of lust with three young upper-class ladies and then a great celebration of the Queen's birthday - where literally anything - or anyone - goes down! Surprisingly cultured Victorian erotica - but VERY rude nonetheless! Great fun.
_______________________________________________________________________

All now stripped to the buff, except the slippers and the silk stockings, which added to the natural beauty of the ladies' legs and feet.
"Ah! I had a delicious spend!" exclaimed Lena, springing on the bed, "but not to be compared with what I expect now, for I shall ride a St. George on Charlie, take Harry in my bottom, and Frank in my mouth."
She was raging with voluptuous desire, and straddling over our hero, as he lay on his back, impaled herself on his pego, which previous efforts to please the ladies had now brought to a chronic state of enormously stiff erection, it seemed to fill her luscious quim to its utmost capacity, to judge from the stretched appearance of the vermillion lips, as they amorously clung around the staff of life, they so delighted to suck in and out...
_________________________________________________________________
First serialised in the underground magazine The Boudoir, 1883.

Length - 26 pages (print) and is definitely 18+ containing continual scenes of graphic mf sex including masturbation, birch, cunnilingus, fellatio, dp, voyeurism, public, flagellation and more...

From 1883 comes a rare, fun foray into Victorian London, following the lustful desires of three rich and aimless lads as they endeavour to satiate their sinful cravings....

Country-boy Charlie comes up to London to study medicine but, hooking up with his two cousins, he learns a lot more about the female anatomy than his professors demand. Parlourmaids, Housekeepers, friends, strangers, prostitutes - Charlie and his pals have them all, every which way! It's a rollercoaster of raunch.
_______________________________________________________________________________

"I shall now take as great liberties with you, young Sir," she said, proceeding to take possession of his manly jewel as it now sprang forth in all its grandeur when she opened the front of his dressing gown.
"The love! Now it's mine! What a beauty!" she exclaimed, leaning over him, and imprinting hot, wanton kisses on the head of the rampant prisoner. Charlie fairly sighed and heaved with excitement under such an osculation, he had never felt such an ecstatic thrill before, it was almost a new sensation to him; a simple kiss or two by an enraptured girl, who had just experienced the delights such a darling could give, he understood as a token of extraordinary desire, but the tonguing and pressures of the sucking lips of this wanton woman opened up such a new source of delight, that he almost fainted under her caresses.
_____________________________________________________________________________

First serialised in the underground magazine The Boudoir, 1883.

Length - 28 pages (print) and is definitely 18+ containing continual scenes of graphic mf sex.

*** Original and Unabridged Content. Made available by GOLDEN CLASSIC PRESS***

Synopsis:
Henry James surprises one with every work, even after years of reading him. Here in A London Life is the familiar calm omniscient anonymous narrative voice telling the story, but the story itself is full of hard things, emotional violence, and financial violence, and not just scaled to the era in which it takes place. Henry James, OM, son of theologian Henry James Sr., brother of the philosopher and psychologist William James and diarist Alice James, was an American-born author, one of the founders and leaders of a school of realism in fiction. He spent much of his life in England and became a British subject shortly before his death. Capital Crimes Seven Centuries of London Life and Murder【電子書籍】[ Max Decharne ]

Over seven centuries London has changed dramatically - from walled medieval settlement to bustling modern metropolis. But throughout its history there has been one inescapable constant: murder. It winds through the heart of the capital as surely as the River Thames.

Capital Crimes tells the story of crime and punishment in the city, from the killing of infamous 'questmonger' Roger Legett during the Peasants' Revolt of 1381 through to the hanging of Styllou Christofi in 1954. Along the way we encounter such shocking characters as railway murderer Franz Muller, the ‘baby farmers’ of Finchley and the notorious political assassin John Bellingham. Some are well known, some obscure; the lives and fates of all, however, have much to tell us, providing a glimpse into the workings of London’s mysterious underworld and reminding us that dark deeds are not so far removed from everyday life as we would perhaps like to believe.

A London Life and Other Tales【電子書籍】[ Henry James ]

Henry James surprises one with every work, even after years of reading him. Here in A London Life is the familiar calm omniscient anonymous narrative voice telling the story, but the story itself is full of hard things, emotional violence, and financial violence, and not just scaled to the era in which it takes place.

Henry James, OM, son of theologian Henry James Sr., brother of the philosopher and psychologist William James and diarist Alice James, was an American-born author, one of the founders and leaders of a school of realism in fiction. He spent much of his life in England and became a British subject shortly before his death. He is primarily known for a series of major novels in which he portrayed the encounter of America with Europe. His plots centered on personal relationships, the proper exercise of power in such relationships, and other moral questions. His method of writing from the point of view of a character within a tale allowed him to explore the phenomena of consciousness and perception, and his style in later works has been compared to impressionist painting.

Everyday Life in Tudor London Life in the City of Thomas Cromwell, William Shakespeare & Anne Boleyn【電子書籍】[ Stephen Porter ]

Tudor London was a vibrant capital city, the very hub of English cultural and political life. The thriving metropolis had a strong royal presence, at the long established Tower of London and Westminster, and later at the palaces of Whitehall, Bridewell and St James’s, built by Henry VIII to host his glittering court. Anne Boleyn was assigned a house in the Strand, with gardens running down to the river, while Elizabeth I stayed occasionally at Somerset House. The great and the good gravitated to the city too: Erasmus lodged with Sir Thomas More and his family in Bucklesbury, off Cheapside; Sir Walter Raleigh wrote poetry in his study in Durham House, overlooking the Thames and William Shakespeare lodged in Silver Street. Like today, streets and areas grew up with their own distinct personality: Bankside and Shoreditch were the first theatre and entertainment districts where the Globe Theatre was built to sit alongside the bear-baiting rings. Londoners themselves, and the many immigrants who flocked from the continent, created a lively, raucous society in the streets, markets and the hundreds of inns and ale-houses. Everyday Life in Tudor London vividly recreates this colourful city.

One of the masterworks of Henry James's middle phase, the novella A London Life first appeared in serial form in Scribner's Magazine in the summer of 1888. As the story opens, Laura Wing, a young American woman, is living with her sister Selina and brother-in-law Lionel Berrington at Mellows, the Berrington family estate outside London, where she has a front-row seat for marital discord and its baleful effects on the couple's children. As Laura struggles to come to terms with her sister's possible infidelity, and its ramifications for her own social standing, the scene moves to London, where James stages an unforgettable portrait of a marriage's final dissolution. For literary critic Edward Wagenknecht, Laura Wing is one of James's essential heroines: "there is no character is his books--not even Isabel Archer, not even Fleda Vetch--to whom James commits himself more unreservedly."
