Empedocles Redivivus Poetry and Analogy in Lucretius【電子書籍】[ Myrto Garani ]

Despite the general scholarly consensus about Lucretius’ debt to Empedocles as the father of the genre of cosmological didactic epic, there is a major disagreement regarding Lucretius’ applause for his Presocratic predecessor’s praeclara reperta (DRN 1.732). In the present study, Garani suggests that by praising Empedocles’ discoveries, Lucretius points to his predecessor’s epistemological methods of inquiry concerning the unseen, methods upon which he himself draws extensively and creatively enhances. In this way, he successfully penetrates into the invisible natural world, deciphers its secrets, and thus liberates his pupil from superstitious fears about death and physical phenomena. To justify this proposition, Garani undertakes a systematic analysis of Lucretius’ integration of Empedocles’ methods of creating analogies in the form of literary devices -- personifications, similes, and metaphors -- and demonstrates that his intertextual engagement with Empedocles’ philosophical poem is direct and intensive at both the poetic and the philosophical levels.

The anthology 'Virgil & Lucretius' presents an illuminating juxtaposition of works by two of ancient Rome's most influential poets, offering readers a diverse exploration of classical literary styles and themes, including epic poetry, philosophical discourse, and the musing on humanity's place within the natural world. This collection showcases the richness of Roman literary tradition, highlighting the distinct yet complementary approaches of Virgil and Lucretius towards epic storytelling and philosophical inquiry. Noteworthy for their depth and complexity, these texts delve into the realms of mythology, ethics, and cosmology, providing a fertile ground for academic exploration and personal reflection. The contributing authors, Virgil and Titus Lucretius Carus, emerge from the backdrop of the late Roman Republic and early Empire, embodying the intellectual and cultural zeitgeist of their era. Their collective works represent significant touchstones in Epicurean and Stoic thought, respectively, and underscore the dynamic interplay between poetry and philosophy in ancient Roman culture. This anthology, therefore, not only serves as a testament to their individual genius but also as a dialogue between their distinct perspectives on nature, society, and the divine. 'Reading 'Virgil & Lucretius' offers a unique opportunity to engage with the seminal thoughts and literary expressions of two giants in classical literature within a single volume. It is an indispensable collection for students and aficionados of classics, philosophy, and literature, inviting a deeper understanding of the human condition and the natural world as seen through the eyes of ancient Rome's celebrated poets.

The third book of Lucretius' great poem on the workings of the universe is devoted entirely to expounding the implications of Epicurus' dictum that death does not matter, 'is nothing to us'. The soul is not immortal: it no more exists after the dissolution of the body than it had done before its birth. Only if this fact is accepted can men rid themselves of irrational fears and achieve the state of ataraxia, freedom from mental disturbance, on which the Epicurean definition of pleasure was based. To present this case Lucretius deploys the full range of poetic and rhetorical registers, soberly prohibitive, artfully decorative or passionately emotive as best suits his argument, reinforcing it with vivid and compelling imagery. This new edition has been completely revised, with a considerably enlarged Commentary and a new supplementary introduction taking account of the great amount of new scholarship of the last forty years.

Titus Lucretius Carus's 'On the Nature of Things' is a philosophical and didactic poem that delves into the principles of Epicurean philosophy. Written in the first century BCE, this epic work explores the nature of the physical world, the origins of the universe, and the importance of understanding natural phenomena. Lucretius employs poetic language and vivid imagery to convey complex philosophical ideas in a way that is accessible to a wide audience, making it a significant work in the field of Roman literature. The poem also critiques superstition and promotes a rational, empirical approach to understanding the world around us. As a result, 'On the Nature of Things' serves as a key text for those interested in ancient philosophy and poetry. The author's deep knowledge of Epicurean philosophy and his desire to promote a life free from fear and anxiety inspired him to create this enduring work, challenging readers to reconsider their beliefs and adopt a more rational worldview. Filthy Lucre Economics for People Who Hate Capitalism【電子書籍】[ Joseph Heath ]

Economists have a bad reputation. Not only do they assume that everyone is self-interested and amoral, they are almost always cheerleaders for the free market. As a result, most people who do not already share their beliefs ignore everything that economists have to say. This is a problem. Even among the highly educated, economics is a minefield of fallacies and errors. Among those who know little about the subjectーa group that includes the average taxpayer and consumer, as well as most journalists, political activists and politiciansーalmost every widely held belief is false. The level of economic illiteracy is stunning.

Filthy Lucre aims to level the playing field and, in this time of enormous market volatility and unprecedented instability, raise our level of economic literacy. Drawing on everyday examples to skewer the six favourite economic fallacies of the right and then the left, we learn why the right wing so wrongly believes that capitalism is the natural order of things, that any tax cut is a good tax cut, and that personal responsibility can solve any problem. And, contrary to how the left feels, why we must resist the urge to fiddle with prices, why the pursuit of profit is not such a bad thing, and why, despite efforts to improve or even fix wages, some jobs will always suck.

Following the Proceeds of Environmental Crime Fish, Forests and Filthy Lucre【

Huge quantities of natural resources are illegally harvested and their proceeds laundered in the Asia-Pacific region, fostering corruption and undermining environmental governance. Most illegal exploitation and pollution occurs in countries with poor governance capacities, but much of the sale for profit and money laundering occurs in mature markets with well-developed governance capacities. Their asymmetrical enforcement capacities can complement each other.

This book explores ways to combat illegal fishing and logging in Asia-Pacific region by the use of cooperative legal measures, particularly anti-money laundering and confiscation of proceeds techniques. Contributors to this volume cover themes including: the nature of transnational environmental crime; patterns in laundering of illicit fish and forest products; networks for distribution of illicit products; weaknesses in current systems for assurance of the legality of products; and international legal cooperation to enforce anti-money laundering laws in relation to illicit products. In considering these topics the book explores how the innovative use of anti-money laundering measures and the seizure of criminal proceeds can as policy options to combat transnational fishery and forestry crimes.

The book will be of keen interest to scholars and students of environmental law and criminal law, and excellent use for practitioners in natural resources conservation law.

I Am the Woman at the Well【電子書籍】[ Zipporah Lucre ]

I Am the Woman at the Well was inspired by the story from the Holy Bible in John 4:1-25. This was a woman who had been with multiple men, none titled as her husband. Even though her lifestyle might have looked like one of a nonbeliever, she was a believer. I believe that like myself, she was looking for someone to notice her and love her flaws and all. I believe Jesus spoke to her because he knew what she needed to hear and that He knew she would share her story "spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ."

Like her, I have had many men in my life and made plenty of wrong choices. I was looking for love without ever acknowledging that Jesus loves me all because I did not see him physically. Yet despite my ungodly behaviors, Jesus spoke with me, forgave me, and gave me a purpose in life. Like the Samaritan woman, I am telling my story about my encounter with Jesus and how he changed my life and continues to change my life.

There are many women out here who are just like this woman and me. They need to know that Jesus is real. He is with you, and he loves you.

The Metamorphoses of Lucretia Three Eighteenth-Century Reinterpretations of the Myth: Carlo Goldoni, Samuel Richardson and Gotthold Ephraim Lessing【電子書籍】[ Anna Livia Frassetto ]

The virtuous Roman matron Lucretia killed herself in 509 b. C. Her death is considered the cause of the Roman revolt against the Tarquins and the mainspring of the passage from the monarchic to the republican age. It is a myth about private and public dimensions: it tells about woman and revolution. Its themes, permanent features and variations are infinite. The metamorphoses of Lucretia are innumerable. Nonetheless, she has always preserved her essence and profound meaning, thus confirming her strength and her being a true myth. Lucretia has crossed the centuries, she has been told, painted and sung by artists from 509 b. C. until today. She reached the Eighteenth Century, Italy, Great Britain and Germany and she met three great authors: Carlo Goldoni, Samuel Richardson and Gotthold Ephraim Lessing. They chose her and decided to tell her story, each in his own peculiar manner. Goldoni wrote a dramma giocoso in musica, Lugrezia Romana in Costantinopoli, Richardson a novel, Clarissa or the History of a Young Lady and Lessing a b?rgerliches Trauerspiel entitled Emilia Galotti. One myth, three authors, three different literary genres: this work would like to investigate and verify the connection among them and the meaning of it. The comparative analysis of the metamorphoses of Lucretia will disclose new concepts of private and public, of woman and revolution, sprung from an old but perpetual reviving myth.

Lucretius and the Language of Nature【電子書籍】[ Barnaby Taylor ]

Lucretius' Epicurean poem De Rerum Natura ('On the Nature of Things'), written in the middle of the first century BC, made a fundamental and lasting contribution to the language of Latin philosophy. The style of De Rerum Natura is like nothing else in extant Latin: at once archaic and modern, Romanizing and Hellenizing, intimate and sublime, it draws on multiple literary genres and linguistic registers. This book offers a study of Lucretius' linguistic innovation and creativity. Lucretius is depicted as a linguistic trailblazer, extending and augmenting the technical language of Latin in order to describe the Epicurean universe of atoms and void in all its complexity and sublimity. A detailed understanding of the Epicurean linguistic theory brings with it a greater appreciation of Lucretius' own language. Accordingly, this book features an in-depth reconstruction of certain core features of Epicurean linguistic theory. Elements of Lucretius' style discussed include his attitudes to, and use of, figurative language (especially metaphor); his explorations, both explicit and implicit, of Latin etymology; his uses of Greek; and his creative deployment of compounds and prefixed words. His practice is related throughout not only to the underlying Epicurean theory but also to contemporary Roman attitudes to style and language. The result is a new reading of one of the greatest and most difficult works to survive from the Roman world.

Rape Of Lucrece【電子書籍】[ William Shakespeare ]

Rape of Lucrece
by William Shakespeare

Lucrece is described as if she were a work of art, objectified in as if she were a material possession. Tarquin's rape of her is described as if she were a fortress under attack -- conquering her various physical attributes. Although Lucrece is raped, the poem offers an apology to absolve her of guilt. Like Shakespeare's other raped women, Lucrece gains symbolic value: through her suicide, her body metamorphoses into a political symbol.
