In particular, the decade following the revolution saw a dramatic rise in the lynching of ethnic Mexicans in Texas. This book argues that ethnic and racial tension brought on by the fighting in the borderland made Anglo-Texans feel justified in their violent actions against Mexicans. They were able to use the legal system to their advantage, and their actions often went unpunished. <p>Today, many people have never heard the terms Lynch Law or lynching.  Lynching carries a few different connotations.  On the one hand it suggest the brutal practice of hanging black people or African Americans by mobs of white people. </p> <p>On the other hand it speaks to an entire cultural environment wherein the African American was denied any of the protections secured for all Americans in the Constitution.  The fourteenth amendment to the United States Constitution consist of a Citizenship clause, Privileges or Immunities Clause, a Due Process Clause, and an Equal Protection Clause.</p> <p>The basis of these clauses are simply structured in a manner to protect an individual’s Constitutional rights to what they stipulate, the first section of which states as follows:</p> <p>All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside.  No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.</p> <p>In the pages that follow Ida Wells will provide you with detailed accounts of the clear constitutional violations that African Americans suffer then and come away with more of an understanding of the mind-set that brings these types of horrors into the 21st Century. </p> <p>Not all nor nearly all of the murders done by white men, during the past thirty years in the South, have come to light, but the statistics as gathered and preserved by white men, and which have not been questioned, show that during these years more than ten thousand African Americans have been killed in cold blood, without the formality of judicial trial and legal process.</p> <p>If we don’t understand our history, we are doomed to repeat it and this is what we are experiencing today in the United States.  Police Brutality is rampant and effects all of us, black, white, red, and brown and because of that we should all be familiar with this history.  It is with that hope that we have taken it upon ourselves to make the spirit of Ida B. It is commonly thought that only the lowest and most disgusting birds and beasts, such as buzzards, vultures and hyenas, will gloat over and prey upon dead bodies; but the Southern mob, in its rage, feeds its vengeance by shooting, stabbing and burning their victims, when they are already dead.</p> <p>When the moral sense of a nation begins to decline, and the wheels of progress to roll backward, there is no telling how low the one will fall or where the other will stop. One of the youths shot the white man five times while his girl friend claimed that one of the three raped her. Local law enforcement quickly located the three, interrogated them and locked them up in the county jail. The next day, the white man succumbed to his wounds. That night a mob of angry white-folks stormed the jail and removed all three suspects. They lynched two of the teens and inexplicably returned the third suspect to the jail.</p> <p>County and state prosecutors began a crusade to locate, prosecute and convict the mob members who hung the two. However, they discovered the whole town had difficulty remembering details. This story also tracks the trial and subsequent life of the surviving sixteen-year old.</p> <p>The author used dozens of articles from over twenty local, state and national newspapers along with several confidential depositions to reconstruct these events.</p> <p>After reading this book, one needs to consider what if anything has really changed in America during the past 90 years?</p> <p>About the Author</p> <p>James Ferrell grew up in Marion, Indiana and has been curious about the events surrounding the 1930 lynching of two black teenagers on the lawn of Marion’s Court House since he was a teenager. Finally, as an adult, he was determined to discover what really happened in his home town. The result is this book. While researching, Ferrell obtained a MA in History to help him to document his findings.</p> <p>Although this is his first book, Ferrell has written for business and technical publications for over twenty-five years. <p>In Blood at the Root, winner of the SUNY Press 2009 Dissertation/First Book Prize in African American Studies, Jennie Lightweis-Goff examines the centrality of lynching to American culture, focusing particularly on the ways in which literature, popular culture, and art have constructed the illusion of secrecy and obsolescence to conceal the memory of violence. Including critical study of writers and artists like Ida B. Wells-Barnett, Richard Wright, William Faulkner, George Schuyler, and Kara Walker, Lightweis-Goff also incorporates her personal experience in the form of a year-long travelogue of visits to lynching sites. Her research and travel move outside the American South and rural locales to demonstrate the fiction of confining racism to certain areas of the country and the denial of collective responsibility for racial violence. Lightweis-Goff seeks to implicate societal attitude in the actions of the few and to reveal the legacy of violence that has been obscured by more valiant memories in the public sphere. <p>On June 2, 1882 at about 9:30 p.m., David Bausman met death at the Kaw River while engaging in sexual intercourse with 14 year-old Sis Vinegar. Bausman was set upon by George Robinson, Sis’ boyfriend, and his friend Isaac King. On June 10, 1882 at about 1:00 a.m., a mob broke into the Douglas County Jail, removed Robinson, King, and Pete Vinegar, Sis’ father, and dragged them to the Kaw River Bridge and lynched them, one by one. Sis was spared the rope.</p> <p>The coroner’s inquest determined that Bausman, an upstanding, well-to-do, white citizen of Lawrence and former soldier in the Civil War, was lured to the Kaw River bottoms by Sis Vinegar, a Negro prostitute. Bausman was robbed, beaten to death, and his battered body thrown into the water by the ‘Vinegar bunch.’ News articles described the Vinegar family as a den of outcasts, beggars, and thieves. Lawrence attorneys refused to represent Sis. She pled guilty and was sentenced to a life in prison at the federal prison in Leavenworth, Kansas. Sis died of tuberculosis, contracted from another inmate, seven years into her sentence.</p> <p>Margaret ‘Sis’ Vinegar has never told her story, until now that is. Even a casual consideration of the facts and evidence points to a monumental miscarriage of justice, and three important questions arise. Was Bausman truly the upstanding citizen he was portrayed to be? Did Sis Vinegar and her family rightfully earn the labels of beggars and thieves? Why was it crucial to the Free State Cause that the Vinegars’ due process rights be severed and the lynch mob interposed as the best resolution for the Lawrence Community and the State of Kansas?</p> <p>Sis Vinegar’s Story is told through Negro Attorney John Waller, who actually sought a governor’s pardon for Sis. John Waller is aided by his wife Susan, an articulate and forceful woman. The Wallers are joined by Lawrence, Kansas’ only Negro police officer, who was actually on the force at the time of the lynching. <p>In October 2000, The Canberra Times broke a story about the misuse of Liberal MP Peter Reith's government funded Telecard. (Note: The Liberal Party is one of the two main conservative political parties in Australia). The card was for member's personal use to have access to a public telephone when no other telephone was available. Mobile phones at the time were not in common use.</p> <p>Unauthorized calls to the tune of $50,000 had been rung up on the Workplace Relations Minister's Telecard after he had given his son, Paul Reith, the card's PIN in contravention of the Remuneration Tribunal's guidelines.</p> <p>For more than two weeks the media was in uproar, smelling the blood of a hardnose conservative politician.</p> <p>Editorial writers, political commentators, and radio talkback hosts charged Reith with the Telecard's misuse.
