Celestial Healing Energy, Mind and Spirit in Traditional Medicines of China, and East and Southeast Asia【電子書籍】[ Marc Micozzi ]

Historically, the influence of Chinese medical traditions, thought to be revealed from divine sources, extended East to Korea and Japan and as far South as Indochina, the Malay Peninsula and the Indonesian Archipelago. As the distinct medical traditions of these regions encountered the ancient medicine of mainland China, they absorbed and transformed them based on their own indigenous healing practices, and herbal and plant resources.

Providing a panoramic overview of the medical traditions of China, the Malay Peninsula, the Indonesian Archipelago, the Philippines, Indochina (Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia), Korea, and Japan, Dr. Marc Micozzi offers compelling new insights into the influence of the essentially Chinese expression of vital energy (qi) in these traditions, as well as the pull of other cultural traditions, such as those of India and Islam. Dr. Micozzi discusses evidence for the efficacy of these healing practices and their many influences in the West, and explores how a Western reader might consider seeking a practitioner, as well as effective treatments, from one of these traditions.

This groundbreaking book will be of interest to practitioners of Chinese and Asian medical traditions, and complementary and alternative health, as well as anyone with an interest in Chinese and Asian approaches to health and wellbeing.

The Great American Drug Deal: A New Prescription for Innovative and Affordable Medicines【電子書籍】[ Peter Kolchinsky ]

Developing life-changing drugs is risky and expensiveーbut that's not what makes them unaffordable.

Drug pricing is a staple of every news cycle and political debate. And while we've struggled for decades to agree on solutions that serve all patients without jeopardizing the invention of new medicines, many Americans suffer because they can't afford the drugs they need.

Do we really have to choose between affordability and innovation?

In The Great American Drug Deal, scientist and industry expert Peter Kolchinsky answers this question with a decisive No. The pharmaceutical industry's commitment to creating new lifesaving drugs destined to become inexpensive generics can be balanced by the healthcare system's commitment to making those drugs affordable for all patientsーa Biotech Social Contract. Through deep research and compelling stories of breakthroughs and breakdowns, Kolchinsky presents solutions for striking a balance that are bold yet realistic and tackle today's most pressing questions, including:

Why doesn't insurance make drugs affordable?

How can we prevent price-jacking of older drugs?

Why are drugs more expensive in America than elsewhere?

How can we guarantee that all medicines eventually go generic so they are only temporarily expensive?

What systemic failures led to the opioid crisis, and how can we prevent the next one?

The Great American Drug Deal offers clear-eyed scrutiny of all players in the industry and examines vital ideas for closing loopholes, encouraging investment, dealing with bad actors, and educating consumers. It's time we resolve to support patients and fuel discoveries that ease suffering now and for generations to come.

The Law on Medicines Volume 1 A Comprehensive Guide【電子書籍】[ H.S. Harrison ]

The Medicines Act 1968 together with its delegated legislation comprehensively controls the manufacture, packaging, labelling, distribution and promotion of medicines for both human and animal use in the United Kingdom. It also controls the import and export of such medicines. It replaced a patchwork of controls which evolved over a century. Since its enactment, more than 150 items of delegated legislation (orders and regulations) have been made under its provisions and about 130 are still operative. The sheer physical bulk of this mass of material causes difficulty, not only in comprehension but also in finding the detail so often required. The situation is exacerbated by the fact that some pieces of legislation have been amended several times. My principal aim is to provide a reference book which contains all of the provisions of the Act and its various orders, regulations as amended to date. The material is arranged to facilitate the search for detail. In order to assist the reader in finding his way through this maze, Chaper 1 consists of a survey of the situation which existed before the Act came into being, together with a synopsis of the present controls. This should enable the reader to appreciate the changes which have occurred and how the system works.

The Truth About Diseases Causes, Precautions and Treatment - Without "Medicines" and Surgeries【電子書籍】[ Tihomir Petrov ]

Usually, a man creates his diseases. In this book are explained the true causes for the diseases, principles of natural hygienewhich must be kept to prevent diseasesand the way of treatment, if they have occurred. Natural hygiene uses holistic/general way for treatment and maintenance of health. They say that health is the greatest wealth. Usually, we realize the value of something when we lose it. Health is not everything, but everything without health is nothing! Any theory is confirmed or rejected by practice. Think well what is truetheories that are taught in medical universities, which are not based on natural laws, or the theories based on natural laws and obvious facts? If the wrong/false theories, which are taught in the medical universities, that the causes for some diseases are autoimmune, and other diseases are caused by viruses or bacteria, were true, most wild, free animals in nature would also be suffering from the same diseases, from which suffer people. The truth is that very few of these animals get sick, and it is usually due to disposal of poisons in nature by people. The things are not so complicated as the doctors of the official medicine want to convince us. Otherwise, if there were at all live wild animals, most of them would also be ill, even if they had (veterinary) doctors, dentists, and doctors of pharmacy and their poisons called medicines and vaccines. We are creators of our tomorrow, and there is no need to pay to a divinerwhether he is a doctor, a lawyer, a priest, or a bankerto tell us what will happen to us tomorrow. Nothing special will happen. The inevitable will occurwe will reap what we have sown.

The Path of Yog Cure Without Medicines【電子書籍】[ Ashok K. Sachdeva ]

'Yoga' (to be pronounced as 'Yog') is predominantly thought of as physical exercise only and the 'aasan' (written as 'aasana') meaning 'posture', have gained wide-spread popularity in recent decades. Yogaasans are in fact the most superficial aspect of this profound science of unfolding the infinite potentials of the human mind and soul.°Apart from the spiritual goals, the physical postures of Yog are used to alleviate health problems, reduce stress and make the spine supple. These days Yog is used as a complete exercise program and physical therapy routine. Different diseases occurring in stomach, neck, spine and knees can be cured by Yogic methods including Yog Aasans and Pranayams.°Good health ought to be everybody's concern, not solely the medical profession's business. The Yog postures (Aasan) and exercise strengthen the muscles and nerves. It is necessary to strengthen the muscles and nerves in order to keep the body healthy. Light breathing exercises strengthen our respiratory system. These are called Pranayams: The Breath of Life. Yog is fully capable of transforming the physical body. Informal Norms in Global Governance Human Rights, Intellectual Property Rules and Access to Medicines【電子書籍】[ Wolfgang Hein ]

Hein and Moon take up a serious problem of contemporary global governance: what can be done when international trade rules prevent the realization of basic human rights? Starting in the 1990s, intellectual property obligations in trade agreements required many developing countries to begin granting medicines patents, which often rendered lifesaving drugs unaffordable. At stake was the question of what priority would be given to health-particularly of some of the world’s poorest people-and what priority to economic interests, particularly those of the most powerful states and firms. This book recounts the remarkable story of the access to medicines movement. The authors offer an explanation for how the informal, but powerful norm that every person should have access to essential medicines emerged after a decade of heated political contestation and against long odds. They also explore the stability and scope of the norm. Finally, the book examines the limitations of informal norms for protecting human rights, and when renewed focus on changing formal norms is warranted.

Powerful Medicines The Benefits, Risks, and Costs of Prescription Drugs【電子書籍】[ Jerry Avorn M.D. ]

If you believe that the latest blockbuster medication is worth a premium price over your generic brand, or that doctors have access to all the information they need about a drug’s safety and effectiveness each time they write a prescription, Dr. Jerry Avorn has some sobering news. Drawing on more than twenty-five years of patient care, teaching, and research at Harvard Medical School, he shares his firsthand experience of the wide gap in our knowledge of the effectiveness of one medication as compared to another. In Powerful Medicines, he reminds us that every pill we take represents a delicate compromise between the promise of healing, the risk of side effects, and an increasingly daunting price. The stakes on each front grow higher every year as new drugs with impressive power, worrisome side effects, and troubling costs are introduced.

This is a comprehensive behind-the-scenes look at issues that affect everyone: our shortage of data comparing the worth of similar drugs for the same condition; alarming lapses in the detection of lethal side effects; the underuse of life-saving medications; lavish marketing campaigns that influence what doctors prescribe; and the resulting upward spiral of costs that places vital drugs beyond the reach of many Americans.

In this engagingly written book, Dr. Avorn asks questions that will interest every consumer: How can a product judged safe by the Food and Drug Administration turn out to have unexpectedly lethal side effects? Why has the nation’s drug bill been growing at nearly 20 percent per year? How can physicians and patients pick the best medication in its class? How do doctors actually make their prescribing decisions, and why do those decisions sometimes go wrong? Why do so many Americans suffer preventable illnesses and deaths that proper drug use could have averted? How can the nation gain control over its escalating drug budget without resorting to rationing or draconian governmental controls?
Using clinical case histories taken from his own work as a practitioner, researcher, and advocate, Dr. Avorn demonstrates the impressive power of the well-conceived prescription as well as the debacles that can result when medications are misused. He describes an innovative program that employs the pharmaceutical industry’s own marketing techniques to reduce use of some of the most overprescribed and overpriced products. Powerful Medicines offers timely and practical advice on how the nation can improve its drug-approval process, and how patients can work with doctors to make sure their prescriptions are safe, effective, and as affordable as possible.
This is a passionate and provocative call for action as well as a compelling work of clear-headed science.

Mixing Medicines The Global Drug Trade and Early Modern Russia【電子書籍】[ Clare Griffin ]

Early modern Russians preferred one method of treating the sick above all others: prescribing drugs. The Moscow court sourced pharmaceuticals from Asia, Africa, Western Europe, and the Americas, in addition to its own sprawling empire, to heal its ailing tsars.

Mixing Medicines explores the dynamic and complex world of early modern Russian medical drugs, from its enthusiasm for newly imported American botanicals to its disgust at Western European medicines made from human corpses. Clare Griffin draws from detailed apothecary records to shed light on the early modern Russian Empire’s role in the global trade in medical drugs. Chapters follow the trade and use of medical ingredients through networks that linked Moscow to Western Europe, Asia, and the Americas; the transformation of natural objects, such as botanicals and chemicals, into medicines; the documentation and translation of medical knowledge; and Western European influence on Russian medical practices. Looking beyond practitioners, texts, and ideas to consider how materials of medicine were used by one of the early modern world’s major empires provides a novel account of the global history of early modern medicine.

Mixing Medicines offers unique insight into how the dramatic reshaping of global trade touched the day-to-day lives of the people living in early modern Russia.

David S. Riley’s interest in the history, methodology and results of homeopathic drug provings began with his exposure to homeopathy in 1988 and his later study at the Hahnemann College of Homeopathy in Albany, California. The homeopathic drug provings published here are the result of his investigation of the research methods associated with homeopathic drug provings and contemporary research methodology. Dr. Riley has developed explicit and transparent research tools for (1) symptom selection criteria, (2) electronic data collection, and (3) blinding to reduce bias. These homeopathic drugs provings follow good clinical practice research guidelines (GCP) and incorporate the guidelines suggested by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann more than 200 years ago

The Law of Off-label Uses of Medicines Regulation and Litigation in the EU, UK and USA【電子書籍】[ Andrea Parziale ]

This book examines the regulatory framework for untested and unapproved uses (off-label uses) of medicines in the EU, UK, and USA. Before reaching patients, medicines are extensively tested by manufacturers and approved by regulators to minimise the risk of adverse reactions. However, physicians can prescribe pharmaceuticals for off-label uses, widespread in paediatrics, oncology, rare diseases and, more recently, in treatment for Covid-19. While off-label uses may offer hope, they may also expose patients to risks and uncertainties. Clarification is therefore needed to improve the protection of patients' rights while enhancing legal certainty for health actors. To this end, this work clarifies the regulatory mechanisms and litigation trends concerning off-licence prescriptions in these jurisdictions. It assesses how traditional, prevention-driven regulatory and civil liability rules are being adapted to tackle potential risks and scientific uncertainty. The book outlines the applicable regulations, as well as considering Brexit’s impact on off-label policies in the UK, and EU and national off-label policies in the context of the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. It also explores under what conditions physicians, manufacturers, or regulators must compensate patients injured by untested prescriptions. The book will be an essential resource for researchers, academics and policy-makers working in the areas of medical law and ethics, public health law, pharmaceutical law and private comparative law.

The Book of Herbal Wisdom Using Plants as Medicines【電子書籍】[ Matthew Wood ]

Hailed as a “classic” by leading herbalist Rosemary Gladstar, this botanical compendium provides a wide-ranging history of herbalism and useful guidance for healing with herbs

Matthew Wood is one of the United States’ most renowned herbalists and the author of Seven Herbs: Plants as Healers, a watershed book in teaching herbal healing as a part of total wellness. With The Book of Herbal Wisdom, he continues and expands this study, creating a must-read guide for anyone who works in the natural health field or is interested in self-healing with herbs.

Wood creates a vast and sweeping history of herbalism, drawing on Western botanical knowledge, homeopathy, Traditional Chinese medicine, and Native American shamanic botany. Detailing the history and use of more than forty plants, he shows how each tradition views a plant, as well as its use in cases drawn from his own herbal and homeopathic practice. An initial section describes signatures, similar, and patterns in these traditions, and elements, temperaments, and constitutions. Wood has two objectives: to demonstrate how herbal medicines are agents of healing and wisdom, and to give the reader a useful catalog of plants for medicinal uses. His clinical observations of his patients bear the wry wisdom of the country doctor; his love of plants is evident in lush botanical descriptions, which show the connection between remediesーwhether homeopathic, Chinese, or Native Americanーand the plants from which they are derived.

An introduction to centuries of lore about healing from indigenous traditions, The Book of Herbal Wisdom integrates and describes North American Indian medicine, homeopathy, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Western herbalism like no other contemporary botanical compendium.

The Law and Regulation of Medicines and Medical Devices【電子書籍】[ Peter Feldschreiber ]

Feldschreiber's comprehensive text on the science, regulatory policy and law surrounding new medicines and medical devices is a specialist reference for legal, medical, and pharmaceutical professionals: written by both legal and medical experts, it informs the scientifically lay lawyer of the biological science behind recent product innovations, whilst helping the legally lay researcher and developer of these products to understand the legal and regulatory framework encompassing them. Reflecting significant legal and scientific advancements since its first publication in 2008, this second edition, now entitled The Law and Regulation of Medicines and Medical Devices, has been substantially revised and reframed: key areas of review include medical device regulatory legislation (including the new Medical Devices Regulation), international regulatory procedures for life science products, the UK review on blood products, new cancer therapies, the impact of Brexit and the Covid-19 pandemic, and a greatly expanded discussion of criminal legislation on the cultivation of controlled drugs, such as cannabis, and their inclusion in the medical therapeutic armamentarium. The work introduces the structure and function of regulatory authorities and the linkage between the ethical issues underpinning clinical trials regulation, explains the intellectual property, product liability, and litigation issues surrounding life science products, and offers practical guidance on topics such as: drafting regulatory submissions; preparing litigation against decisions of the regulatory authorities; determining appropriate regulatory submission strategies throughout the European Community; and preparing litigation relating to medicinal products liability under the Product Liability Directive and the Consumer Protection Act 1987.
