Buddha Nature The Mahayana Uttaratantra Shastra with Commentary【電子書籍】[ Arya Maitreya ]

The Buddha's definitive teachings on how we should understand the ground of enlightenment and the nature and qualities of buddhahood.

All sentient beings, without exception, have buddha natureーthe inherent purity and perfection of the mind, untouched by changing mental states. Thus there is neither any reason for conceit nor self-contempt. This is obscured by veils that are removable and do not touch the inherent purity and perfection of the nature of the mind. The Mahayana Uttaratantra Shastra, one of the “Five Treatises” said to have been dictated to Asanga by the Bodhisattva Maitreya, presents the Buddha’s definitive teachings on how we should understand this ground of enlightenment and clarifies the nature and qualities of buddhahood. This seminal text details with great clarity the view that forms the basis for Vajrayana, and especially Mahamudra, practice.

The textbook is currently recommended as part of FPMT Education Services’ Discovering Buddhism course.

From the original preface, written by Lama Zopa Rinpoche:

"This book has not been written because there is some new Dharma that was not shown by Guru Shakyamuni. And because of my limited-experience realizations, in no way I have deserved to write such a book, and there is scant hope that it can benefit others.

"But in view of the remarkable fact that in this time, already beyond the period of the five degenerations and an age in which there is the great danger of atomic explosion, an increasing number of Westerners are finding the Buddhadharma as they seek like blind men opening their eye, and as it is extremely important to make meaningful this once-received Wisdom Eye, which analyses all dharmas, clearly discriminating between what to avoid and what to practise, my depthlessly kind venerable Guru, Thubten Yeshe, has given the Vajra instruction that it is necessary to write a book such as this in English."

2016 edition, 292 pages.

Entering the Way of the Great Vehicle Dzogchen as the Culmination of the Mahayana【電子書籍】[ Rongzom Chok Zangpo ]

The first English translation of a classic treatise on how the Tibetan practice of Dzogchen, or Great Perfection, is in fact the culmination of the path of Mahayana Buddhism.

Rongzom Ch?kyi Zangpo wrote this treatise in the eleventh century during the renaissance of Buddhism in Tibet that was spurred by the influx of new translations of Indian Buddhist texts, tantras, and esoteric transmissions from India. For political and religious reasons, adherents of the “new schools” of Tibetan Buddhism fostered by these new translations cast the older tradition of lineages and transmissions as impure and decadent. Rongzompa composed the work translated here in order to clearly and definitively articulate how Dzogchen was very much in line with the wide variety of sutric and tantric teachings espoused by all the Tibetan schools. Using the kinds of philosophic and linguistic analyses favored by the new schools, he demonstrates that the Great Perfection is indeed the culmination and maturation of the Mah?y?na, the Great Vehicle.

The central topic of the work is the notion of illusory appearance, for when one realizes deeply that all appearances are illusory, one realizes also that all appearances are in that respect equal. The realization of the equality of all phenomena is said to be the Great Perfection approach to the path, which frees one from both grasping at, and rejecting, appearances. However, for those unable to remain effortlessly within the natural state, in the final chapter Rongzompa also describes how paths with effort are included in the Great Perfection approach.

The Array of Sukhavati Pure Land: A Concise Mahayana Sutra eBook【電子書籍】[ FPMT ]

From the root text:

If you write in gold The Array of Sukhavati Pure Land you will be reborn in Sukhavati for 100,000 eons. If you write it in gold and silver, you will be reborn in Sukhavati for 10,000 eons. If you write it in silver, you will be reborn in Sukhavati for 1,000 eons. If you write it in vermillion, you will be reborn in Sukhavati for 100 eons. If you write it in black ink, you will be reborn in Sukhavati for 10 eons. You will be reborn in the pure realm of Dharmakaya Boundless Light.

This is the essence of the ultimate. It is the pith of the dharmata. It is the king of all confessions of misdeeds. If you write and recite this, you will definitely be purified even if you kill insects and creatures, such as 100 people, 100 horses, 100 snakes, 100 dogs, 100 women, 100 cattle, 100 fish, 100 pigs, 100 monkeys, and 100 sheep; curse others; poison others; engage in miserliness and deceit; are the owner of a dog that kills deer; have degenerated your promises and commitments and then engage in sexual misconduct; kill your guru, abbot, or teacher; or do any of the ten nonvirtues.

When someone dies, the best is to have a lama do this ritual for the corpse on the morning of the cremation; the middling is for a geshe to do it; and the last is for a monk to do it. If that isn’t possible, at least someone who knows how to read should do it. If it is recited three times and then tapped on the corpse’s head three times, without doubt that person will become a buddha.

In this eon, all Dharma practices that are sealed with this prayer of dedication are greatly meritorious. If those who write, recite, keep, or disseminate it, read or recite it three times, they will not experience sickness or (untimely) death. May all of their wishes be fulfilled, and may they meet with those who are propitious and endowed with the fortunate karma to be reborn in Sukhavati Pure Land.

2020 edition.

Empty Vision Metaphor and Visionary Imagery in Mahayana Buddhism【電子書籍】[ David McMahan ]

Visual metaphors in a number of Mahayana sutras construct a discourse in which visual perception serves as a model for knowledge and enlightenment. In the Perfection of Wisdom (Prajnaparamita) and other Mahayana literature, immediate access to reality is symbolized by vision and set in opposition to language and conceptual thinking, which are construed as obscuring reality. In addition to its philosophical manifestations, the tension between vision and language also functioned as a strategy of legitimation in the struggle of the early heterodox Mahayana movement for authority and legitimacy. This emphasis on vision also served as a resource for the abundant mythical imagery in Mahayana sutras, imagery that is ritualized in Vajrayana visualization practices. McMahan brings a wide range of literature to bear on this issue, Including a rare analysis of the lavish imagery of the Gandavyuha Sutra in its Indian context. He concludes with a discussion of Indian approaches to visuality in the light of some recent discussions of "ocularcentrism" in the west, inviting scholars to expand the current discussion of vision and its roles in constructing epistemic systems and cultural practices beyond its exclusively European and American focus.

Asvaghosha's Discourse on the Awakening of Faith in the Mahayana【電子書籍】[ Asvaghosha ]

The Awakening of Faith in the Mahayana is a classic of East Asian Buddhism. Its concept of faith, however, is not the same as that of Western religions. The books' title may also be translated as The Generating of Confidence in the Mahayana. Confidence or trust is generated as a result of examining the Mahayana Buddhist teachings, which are concisely summarized here. This book is said to have been written for those who find the wordiness of extensive discourse wearisome, and who prefer a brief treatise with a lot of meaning. Doctrinally, it presents the tathagata-garbha or Buddha-matrix teachings in their most developed form.
This abstruse text is translated here by the distinguished D.T. Suzuki. The translation by Yoshito Hakeda published elsewhere is made from the Chinese version of Paramartha, while this one is made from the Chinese version of Siksananda.

Mahayana Buddhism in Bhutan【電子書籍】[ Raman Singh ]

The introduction of Buddhism occurred in the seventh century, when Tibetan king Srongtsen Gampo, a convert to Buddhism, ordered the construction of two Buddhist temples, at Bumthang in central Bhutan and at Kyichu in the Paro Valley. Buddhism replaced but did not eliminate the Bon religious practices that had also been prevalent in Tibet until the late sixth century. Instead, Buddhism absorbed Bon and its believers. As the country developed in its many fertile valleys, Buddhism matured and became a unifying element. It was Buddhist literature and chronicles that began the recorded history of Bhutan. In 747, a Buddhist saint, Padmasambhava, came to Bhutan from India at the invitation of one of the numerous local kings. After reportedly subduing eight classes of demons and converting the king, Guru Rimpoche moved on to Tibet. Upon his return from Tibet, he oversaw the construction of new monasteries in the Paro Valley and set up his headquarters in Bumthang. This book fulfills the long felt necessity of a text dealing with concepts of this subject. It can also prove to be a worthy companion and guide for the students, users and researchers.

Skilful Means A Concept in Mahayana Buddhism【電子書籍】[ Michael Pye ]

'Skilful Means' is the key principle of Mahayana, one of the great Buddhist traditions. First described in the Lotus Sutra, it originates in myths of the Buddha's compassionate plans for raising life from the ceaseless round of birth and death. His strategies or interventions are 'skilful means' - morally wholesome tricks devised for the purpose of enabling nirvana or enlightenment. Michael Pye's clear and engaging introductory guide investigates the meaning and context of skilful means in Mayahana Buddhist teachings, whilst tracing its early origins in ancient Japanese and Theravada thought. First published in 1978, and still the best explanation of the concept, it illuminates a core working philosophy essential for any complete understanding of Buddhism.

The Heart Sutra A Comprehensive Guide to the Classic of Mahayana Buddhism【電子書籍】[ Kazuaki Tanahashi ]

An illuminating in-depth study of one of the most well-known and recited Buddhist texts, by a renowned modern translator

The Prajna Paramita Hridaya Sutra is among the best known of all the Buddhist scriptures. Chanted daily by many Zen practitioners, it is also studied extensively in the Tibetan tradition, and it has been regarded with interest more recently in the West in various fields of studyーfrom philosophy to quantum physics. In just a few lines, it expresses the truth of impermanence and the release of suffering that results from the understanding of that truth with a breathtaking economy of language.

Kazuaki Tanahashi’s guide to the Heart Sutra is the result of a life spent working with it and living it. He outlines the history and meaning of the text and then analyzes it line by line in its various forms (Sanskrit, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Tibetan, Mongolian, and various key English translations), providing a deeper understanding of the history and etymology of the elusive words than is generally available to the non-specialistーyet with a clear emphasis on the relevance of the text to practice.
Joseph Walser provides the first examination of Nagarjuna's life and writings in the context of the religious and monastic debates of the second century CE. Power, Wealth and Women in Indian Mahayana Buddhism The Gandavyuha-sutra【電子書籍】[ Douglas Osto ]

This book examines the concepts of power, wealth and women in the important Mahayana Buddhist scripture known as the Gandavyuha-sutra, and relates these to the text’s social context in ancient Indian during the Buddhist Middle Period (0?500 CE).

Employing contemporary textual theory, worldview analysis and structural narrative theory, the author puts forward a new approach to the study of Mahayana Buddhist sources, the ‘systems approach’, by which literature is viewed as embedded in a social system. Consequently, he analyses the Gandavyuha in the contexts of reality, society and the individual, and applies these notions to the key themes of power, wealth and women. The study reveals that the spiritual hierarchy represented within the Gandavyuha replicates the political hierarchies in India during Buddhism’s Middle Period, that the role of wealth mirrors its significance as a sign of spiritual status in Indian Buddhist society, and that the substantial number of female spiritual guides in the narrative reflects the importance of royal women patrons of Indian Buddhism at the time.

This book will appeal to higher-level undergraduates, postgraduates and scholars of religious studies, Buddhist studies, Asian studies, South Asian studies and Indology.

The Great Path of Awakening The Classic Guide to Lojong (Mahayana Mind Training)【電子書籍】[ Jamgon Kongtrul ]

At the core of spiritual development in Mahayana Buddhism is the arousal of bodhicitta, “awakened heart.” Bodhicitta is the unconditional intention to help all sentient beings to become free from suffering. It is the complete abandonment of any sort of personal territory, both in our relationship with others and in our understanding of the world as it is. It begins with the development of love and compassion for others and matures into the full resolution to help them as much as possible.

This theme is the focus of the “Seven Points of Mind Training” as taught by Checkawa Yeshe Dorje, a twelfth-century master of the Kadampa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. The Great Path of Awakening is a translation of this basic teaching with the illuminating commentary of Jamgon Kongtrul, a great nineteenth-century scholar. Kongtrul provides clear and conscise instructions for practicing the techniques of mind training, with an emphasis on meeting the ordinary situations of life, employing intelligence and compassion under all circumstances.

Also included, in an appendix, is a translation of the root text of the “Seven Points of Mind Training” by the Nalanda Translation Committee under the direction of Ch?gyam Trungpa.

Jamgon Kongtrul (1813?1899) was a versatile and prolific scholar. He has been characterized as a “Tibetan Leonardo” because of his significan contributions to religion, education, medicine, and politics.

Ken McLeod has a unique ability to present the suble teaching of tradional Buddhist texts in direct, clear and culturally relevant language. His writings and translations include Wake Up to Your Life (2001), An Arrow to the Heart (2007), Reflections on Silver River (2014), and A Trackless Path (2016).
