Esta tesis de grado analysa el efecto de la industria maquiladora sobre el desarrollo regional. Las maquiladoras en Ciudad Ju?rez ya tienen una larga historia: Fueron establecidas durante la d?cada de las sesentas, cuando el gobierno mexicano aprob? el 'Programa de Industrializaci?n Fronteriza' para combatir el desempleo. La funci?n principal de las maquiladoras es ensamblar, manufacturar o reparar materiales temporalmente importados por el pa?s receptor (en este caso M?xico) para su reexportaci?n a su pa?s de origen. El punto esencial de esta investigaci?n es la evaluaci?n de los efectos permanentes de la industria maquiladora en Ciudad Ju?rez. La cuesti?n es si las f?bricas tienen un efecto positivo sobre el desarrollo econ?mico de la regi?n a largo plazo. Los resultados de este trabajo muestran que no es as?. Las maquiladoras en Ciudad Ju?rez no se han modernizado de una manera significante durante las d?cadas pasadas y su funci?n principal es todav?a la explotaci?n de la mano de obra barata mexicana. La amenaza que tienen las maquiladoras de un pa?s en v?as de desarrollo como M?xico al competir contra los bajos costos de la mano de obra de pa?ses como China va a generar un traslado de las empresas estadounidenses en regiones mexicanas de orientaci?n exportadora como la Ciudad Ju?rez a pa?ses con costos de producci?n m?s bajos.
