Metabolical The Lure and the Lies of Processed Food, Nutrition, and Modern Medicine【電子書籍】[ Robert H Lustig ]

The New York Times bestselling author of Fat Chance explains the eight pathologies that underlie all chronic disease, documents how processed food has impacted them to ruin our health, economy, and environment over the past 50 years, and proposes an urgent manifesto and strategy to cure both us and the planet.

Dr. Robert Lustig, a pediatric neuroendocrinologist who has long been on the cutting edge of medicine and science, challenges our current healthcare paradigm which has gone off the rails under the influence of Big Food, Big Pharma, and Big Government.

You can’t solve a problem if you don’t know what the problem is. One of Lustig’s singular gifts as a communicator is his ability to “connect the dots” for the general reader, in order to unpack the scientific data and concepts behind his arguments, as he tells the “real story of food” and “the story of real food.”

Metabolical weaves the interconnected strands of nutrition, health/disease, medicine, environment, and society into a completely new fabric by proving on a scientific basis a series of iconoclastic revelations, among them:

Medicine for chronic disease treats symptoms, not the disease itself

You can diagnose your own biochemical profile

Chronic diseases are not "druggable," but they are "foodable"

Processed food isn’t just toxic, it’s addictive

The war between vegan and keto is a false warーthe combatants are on the same side

Big Food, Big Pharma, and Big Government are on the other side

Making the case that food is the only lever we have to effect biochemical change to improve our health, Lustig explains what to eat based on two novel criteria: protect the liver, and feed the gut. He insists that if we do not fix our food and change the way we eat, we will continue to court chronic disease, bankrupt healthcare, and threaten the planet. But there is hope: this book explains what’s needed to fix all three.

Naturopathic, integrative oncologist and cancer survivor Dr. Nasha Winters and nutrition therapist Jess Higgins Kelley have identified the ten key elements of a person’s “terrain” (think of it as a topographical map of our body) that are crucial to preventing and managing cancer. Each of the terrain ten elementsーincluding epigenetics, the microbiome, the immune system, toxin exposures, and blood sugar balanceーis illuminated as it relates to the cancer process, then given a heavily researched and tested, non-toxic and metabolic, focused nutrition prescription.

The ketogenic dietーwhich relies on the body’s production of ketones as fuelーis the centerpiece of The Metabolic Approach to Cancer. Further, Winters and Kelley explain how to harness the anticancer potential of phytonutrients abundant in low-glycemic plant and animal foods to address the 10 hallmarks of cancerーan approach Western medicine does with drug-based therapies.

The optimized, genetically-tuned diet shuns:

Grains

Legumes

Sugar

Genetically modified foods

Pesticides

Synthetic ingredients

The optimized, genetically-tuned diet emphasizes:

Whole, wild foods

Local

Organic

Ferments

Heirloom

Low-glycemic

Other components of their approach include harm-reductive herbal therapies like mistletoe (considered the original immunotherapy and common in European cancer care centers) and cannabinoids (which shrink tumors and increase quality of life, yet are illegal in more than half of the United States). Through addressing the ten root causes of cancer and approaching the disease from a nutrition-focused standpoint, we can slow cancer’s endemic spread and live optimized lives.

"The Metabolic Approach to Cancer is a powerhouse of detailed information on how to prevent, manage, and treat cancer. . . . Metabolic Regulation and Metabolic Engineering for Biofuel and Biochemical Production【電子書籍】[ Kazuyuki Shimizu ]

The global warming problem is becoming critical year by year, causing climate disaster all over the world, where it has been believed that the CO2 gas emitted from the factories and the burning of fossil fuels may be one of the reasons of global warming. Moreover, the global stock of fossil fuels is limited, and may run out soon within several tens of years. Although wind, geo-thermal, and tide energies have been considered as clean energy sources, those depend on the land or sea locations and subject to the climate change. Biofuel and biochemical production from renewable bio-resources has thus been paid recent attention from environmental protection and energy production points of view, where the current chemical and energy producing plants can be also utilized with slight modification.

The so-called 1st generation biofuels have been produced from corn starch and sugarcane in particular in USA and Brazil. However, this causes the problem of the so-called "food and energy issues" as the production scale increases. The 2nd generation biofuel production from lingo-cellulosic biomass or wastes has thus been paid recent attention. However, it requires energy intensive pretreatment for the degradation of lingo-cellulosic biomass, and the fermentation is slow due to low growth rate, and thus the productivity of biofuels and bio-chemicals is low. The 3rd generation biofuel production from photosynthetic organisms such as cyanobacteria and algae has been also paid attention, because such organisms can grow with only sun light and CO2 in the air, but the cell growth rate and thus the productivity of the fuels is significantly low.

The main part or core of such production processes is the fermentation by micro-organisms. In particular, it is critical to properly understand the cell metabolism followed by the efficient metabolic engineering. The book gives comprehensive explanation of the cell metabolism and the metabolic regulation mechanisms of a variety of micro-organisms. Then the efficient metabolic engineering approaches are explained to properly design the microbial cell factories for the efficient cell growth and biofuel and biochemical production.

Nutritional Management and Metabolic Aspects of Hyperhomocysteinemia【

Elevated blood concentrations of homocysteine, B vitamins deficiencies and oxidative stress are etiological factors for many human chronic diseases, yet the etiologic relationship of hyperhomocysteinemia to these disorders remains poorly understood. Clinical trials continue to support the notion that hyperhomocysteinemia is involved in the pathogenesis of oxidative stress and its associated impairment of cellular redox status. Antioxidants, phytochemicals, and bioactive agents are thought to be associated with the reduction of oxidative stress and reducing risk of chronic diseases, yet their role in preventing hyperhomocysteinemia-mediated oxidative stress has not been well covered in the literature.

Nutritional Management and Metabolic Aspects and of Hyperhomocysteinemia comprehensively covers the nutritional-based intervention for combating hyperhomocysteinemia-mediated oxidative stress, metabolic regulation of homocysteine-dependent transulfuration and transmethylation pathways, and the identification of novel biomarkers for early diagnosis of hyperhomocysteinemia. The main goal of this text is to address the biochemical and nutritional aspects of hyperhomocysteinemia in relation to increasing risk of chronic diseases, providing insight into the etiology of hyperhomocysteinemia and covering new research on the effective reduction and management of hyperhomocysteinemia-associated chronic diseases.

For researchers seeking a singular source for the understanding of the biochemical aspects and nutrition-based combat of hyperhomocysteinemia, its risk factors, preventive measures, and possible treatments currently available, this text provides all of the important needed information in up-to-date and comprehensive form.

The Stubborn Fat Fix Eat Right to Lose Weight and Cure Metabolic Burnout without Hunger or Exercise【電子書籍】[ Keith Berkowitz ]

Named a Best Book 2010 in the Health: Diet/Weight Loss Category

Do you feel tired all the time? Do you feel hungry between meals, even if you've just eaten? Do you crave candy, soda, or coffee, especially in the mid-afternoon?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may have a metabolic disadvantage. Most diet plans fail because they don't address the underlying metabolic conditions that contribute to increased hunger and weight gain. In fact, they often worsen the problem by cutting calories and prompting food cravings. This further stresses your metabolism and leaves you hungrierーand heavierーthan ever.

The Stubborn Fat Fix remedies this by identifying and treating metabolic imbalances. Based on the results of simple quizzes, you'll choose between two eating plans that prescribe the ideal foods needed to repair your metabolic disorder and turn off faulty hunger signals. On both plans, you'll lose weight by doing something that seems counterintuitiveーeat more, move lessーin order to heal your metabolism. You can even incorporate "luxury" foodsーindulging in ice cream, salty snacks, bread, wine or beer, or even chocolateーto stay on track without feeling deprived. A tailored supplement program, carefully controlled exercise, and stress-reduction techniques complete the metabolic cure.

Even better, once your metabolism is in balance, you will not only permanently drop pounds but also improve your cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, and energy levels for overall better health. Hundreds of the Berkowitzes' patients, like those profiled in the book, have successfully lost up to 70 pounds with this plan.

With The Stubborn Fat Fixーfeaturing more than 30 delicious recipes and the exclusive Fiber Ratio tool created by Valerie to help you get the most out of your favorite foodsーyou, too, can lose that stubborn fat forever.

Socio-Metabolic Perspectives on the Sustainability of Local Food Systems Insights for Science, Policy and Practice【

This book delves into diverse local food systems and critically assesses their ecological and societal benefits and trade-offs, their limits and opportunities for improving sustainability of food production, and framework conditions which either hinder or promote their development.

More and more people with gradually meat heavier diets will demand growth in food production, whilst our increasingly industrialized and globalized agri-food system has already caused serious sustainability problems in the past. This calls for a change in the way we produce, distribute and consume food. A re-emerging debate on food security and food sovereignty seems to support this quest. But what are the promising alternatives to mainstream developments?

Such a discussion regarding sustainability of local food systems requires a sound systemic understanding and thus invites a socio-metabolic reading of local cases by analyzing the nexus between material and energy flows as well as land andtime use. This approach is needed to complement the so far mostly qualitatively-based local food studies. Applying socio-metabolic approaches to local food systems fosters a better understanding of promises and pitfalls for sustainable pathways in the future.

Metabolic Syndrome and Psychiatric Illness: Interactions, Pathophysiology, Assessment and Treatment【電子書籍】[ Scott D Mendelson ]

Metabolic syndrome is a set of risk factors that includes: abdominal obesity, a decreased ability to process glucose (insulin resistance), dyslipidemia (unhealthy lipid levels), and hypertension. Patients who have this syndrome have been shown to be at an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease and/or type 2 diabetes. Metabolic syndrome is a common condition that goes by many names (dysmetabolic syndrome, syndrome X, insulin resistance syndrome, obesity syndrome, and Reaven's syndrome).

This is the first book to fully explain the relationships between psychiatric illness, Metabolic Syndrome, diet, sleep, exercise, medications, and lifestyle choices. Metabolic Syndrome is a major risk factor in Major Depression, Alzheimer's Disease, Sleep Disorders, Sexual Dysfunction, Fibromyalgia, and several other illnesses of psychiatric significance. Conversely, some psychiatric illnesses tend to predispose patients to Metabolic Syndrome. Of further interest is the fact that some of the medications used in the treatment of psychiatric illnesses have been found to cause or exacerbate Metabolic Syndrome.

The author here provides basic information about what genetic predispositions, medical conditions, and lifestyle choices make Metabolic Syndrome more likely to occur. Among the contributing factors that are discussed are genetics, habitual intake of high glycemic index carbohydrates, fructose, saturated fats, trans fatty acids, vitamins, micronutrients, obesity, smoking, and lack of exercise.

The author describes the actual mechanisms by which Metabolic Syndrome progresses and causes damage in the body, including the action of insulin and the pathophysiology of insulin resistance. Details are provided on what occurs in the liver, pancreas, muscle, fat cells, and immune system as Metabolic Syndrome progresses. New findings are presented on fat cells, including the fact that they are beginning to be considered as endocrine cells. There is a substantive discussion of leptin, which is one of the important adipocytokines. Also carbohydrate, 'bad fats', inflammation, oxidative damage, over-stimulation of the 'fight or flight' system, and high levels of the stress hormone cortisol can actually cause the manifestations of Metabolic Syndrome. These explanations set the stage for an explanation of the inter-relationships between Metabolic Syndrome, psychiatric illness, dementia and effects of not only diet and life choices, but also the effects of psychiatric medications.

Finally, there is an important and unique section on the relationship between Metabolic Syndrome and various psychiatric illnesses, and how they exacerbate each other. The significance of Metabolic Syndrome in Major Depression, Bipolar Affective Disorder, Schizophrenia, fibromyalgia and Polycystic Ovary Disease is vast and it is important to realise the effects of psychiatric medications on Metabolic Syndrome. The author discusses antidepressants, mood stabilizers and the new atypical antipsychotics. There are dramatic differences among medications in the way they affect Metabolic Syndrome and pharmaceutical companies will want to promote patient awareness with this book.
