Exploring the Cross-Language Transfer of L1 Rhetorical Knowledge in L2 Writing Cognitive and Metacognitive Perspectives【電子書籍】[ Xing Wei ]

This book addresses the transfer of rhetorical knowledge from a first language (L1) to a second language (L1-to-L2 rhetorical transfer), a common cognitive phenomenon in the L2 writing of students in foreign language learning environments. It investigates L1-to-L2 rhetorical transfer from a cognitive perspective and examines a specific component of L2 writers’ agency in this transfer, namely metacognition. The book’s ultimate goal is to enhance our understanding of the cognitive mechanism of rhetorical transfer across languages. This goal is in turn connected to the need to determine how L1 rhetorical knowledge can be steered and oriented toward successful L2 writing.

To this end, this book proposes a theoretical framework for transfer studies, encompassing the dimensions of text, transfer agency, and L2 essay raters. It facilitates an in-depth exploration of the intricacies involved in L1-to-L2 rhetorical transfer. It then presents empirical studies on this transfer. Embracing a dynamic perspective, this book furthers our understanding of interlingual rhetorical transfer as a conscious or intuitive process for making meaning, one that can be monitored and steered. Moreover, it discusses the pedagogical implications for L2 writing instruction that guides students to use metacognition to transfer L1 rhetorical knowledge during L2 writing.

The Shaping of Thought A Teacher's Guide to Metacognitive Mapping and Critical Thinking in Response to Literature【電子書籍】[ Frank T. Lyman Jr. ]

The Shaping of Thought: A Teacher’s Guide to Metacognitive Mapping and Critical**Thinking in Response to Literature provides a strategic and structured approach to the use of cognitive mapping in response to literature. The allied metacognitive strategy of ThinkTrix, incorporating seven basic thinking types, or mind actions, has emerged from elementary student-created cognitive maps known as ThinkLinks, a student friendly term. Students had labeled their thinking on the ThinkLinks and from the hundreds of work samples, the seven types of thinking were identified. Placed in a matrix with focal points, the thinking types became the ThinkTrix. Originally thought to be cues for teacher questioning, students soon took on the mind actions for their own questioning, responding, and mapping. The book offers a procedural and exemplified guide to metacognitive mapping and is built upon the central purpose of student-generated connections between life and literature.

Once teachers and students have adopted or adapted the suggested framework and strategies in The Shaping of Thought, they will always have visual andaware representation of thinking as a learning tool. Problem solving, decision making, inquiring, and creating will have joined with an indispensible means to lifetime learning and to the goal of constructing what Jerome Bruner called “structures of knowledge”.

Along with a teaching strategy, the book includes strong philosophical underpinnings with “The Kaleidoscope of Learning”, teacher/student tools, numerous activities, and samples of student work. Taken seriously, the Guide will deepen the understanding of literature and life in the direction of the “Big Ideas”, as envisioned by McTighe and Wiggins and by so many teachers.

Cognitive and Metacognitive Problem-Solving Strategies in Post-16 Physics A Case Study Using Action Research【電子書籍】[ Ronald Mazorodze ]

This book reports on a study on physics problem solving in real classrooms situations.
Problem solving plays a pivotal role in the physics curriculum at all levels. However, physics students’ performance in problem solving all too often remains limited to basic routine problems, with evidence of poor performance in solving problems that go beyond equation retrieval and substitution. Adopting an action research methodology, the study bridges the `research-practical divide´ by explicitly teaching physics problem-solving strategies through collaborative group problem-solving sessions embedded within the curriculum. Data were collected using external assessments and video recordings of individual and collaborative group problem-solving sessions by 16-18 year-olds. The analysis revealed a positive shift in the students’ problem-solving patterns, both at group and individual level. Students demonstrated a deliberate, well-planned deployment of the taught strategies. The marked positiveshifts in collaborative competences, cognitive competences, metacognitive processing and increased self-efficacy are positively correlated with attainment in problem solving in physics. However, this shift proved to be due to different mechanisms triggered in the different students.

Teaching Students to Drive Their Brains Metacognitive Strategies, Activities, and Lesson Ideas【電子書籍】[ Donna Wilson ]

If the difference between a student's success and failure were something specific you could teach, wouldn't you?

Metacognition is exactly thatーa tool that helps students unlock their brain's amazing power and take control of their learning. Educational researchers and professional developers Donna Wilson and Marcus Conyers have been exploring and using the explicit teaching of metacognition for years, and in this book they share a practical way to teach preK-12 students how to drive their brains by promoting the following practices:

* Adopt an optimistic outlook toward learning,
* Set goals,
* Focus their attention,
* Monitor their progress, and
* Engage in practices that enhance cognitive flexibility.

Wilson and Conyers explain metacognition and how it equips students to meet today's rigorous education standards. They present a unique blend of useful metaphors, learning strategies, and instructional tips you can use to teach your students to be the boss of their brains. Sample lessons show these ideas in a variety of classroom settings, and sections on professional practice help you incorporate these tools (and share them with colleagues and parents) so that you are teaching for and with metacognition.

Research suggests that metacognition is key to higher student achievement, but studies of classroom practice indicate that few students are taught to use metacognition and the supporting cognitive strategies that make learning easier. You can teach metacognition to your students, so why wouldn't you? This book shows you how.

Detective Fiction and the Problem of Knowledge Perspectives on the Metacognitive Mystery Tale【電子書籍】[ Antoine Dech?ne ]

This book establishes the genealogy of a subgenre of crime fiction that Antoine Dech?ne calls the metacognitive mystery tale. It delineates a corpus of texts presenting 'unreadable' mysteries which, under the deceptively monolithic appearance of subverting traditional detective story conventions, offer a multiplicity of motifs ? the overwhelming presence of chance, the unfulfilled quest for knowledge, the urban stroller lost in a labyrinthine text ? that generate a vast array of epistemological and ontological uncertainties. Analysing the works of a wide variety of authors, including Edgar Allan Poe, Jorge Luis Borges, and Henry James, this book is vital reading for scholars of detective fiction.

Exploring Strategic Thinking: Insights to Assess, Develop, and Retain Army Strategic Thinkers - Qualitative Thinking, Metacognitive Ability, Abductive Reasoning, Visualization, System Theory【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

This research product provides a thorough examination of the question: "How can the Army assess, develop, and retain strategic thinkers?" Expert input from within and outside the military provide a variety of perspectives that highlight areas of convergence and divergence, as well as, exemplar techniques, processes and insights that inform and change the conceptualization and practice of strategic thinking in the military. This compendium does not provide the answer to all of the Army's strategic thinking challenges, but it does provide many possible avenues to explore with the goal of enhancing the Army's strategic thinking capabilities. Topics and subjects covered include: qualitative thinking, metacognitive ability, cognitive flexibility, abductive reasoning, system theory, critical thinking, visualization, PME curriculum, strategic theory.

Section 1: Strategic Thinking - Big Picture * Chapter 1: The Identification and Education of U.S. Army Strategic Thinkers * Chapter 2: Strategic thinking: Requirements, Development, and Assessment * Chapter 3: Recruiting, Training, and Developing Strategic Thinkers * Section 2: Impact of Culture * Chapter 4: Developing Army Strategic Thinkers * Chapter 5: The Sociology of STRATEGY: Romancing the Image * Chapter 6: Creating an Organizational Culture to Support Strategic Thinking * Chapter 7: Implementing a Culture of Strategic Thinking in the U.S. Army * Section 3: Insights from Outside the Military * Chapter 8: Strategic Intuition in Army Training * Chapter 9: Creativity in Strategic Thinking * Chapter 10: Strategic Thinking. A Design Contribution * Section 4: Ways of Thinking * Chapter 11: Professional Military Education's Imperative of Linear/Nonlinear Thinking Style Balance for Improved Strategic Thinking * Chapter 12: A Science of Context: The Qualitative Approach as Fundamental to Strategic Thought * Chapter 13: The Genome Doodle of Strategic Thinking: Times, Epistemologies, and Narratives

To begin understanding strategic thinking in the military, one must first have a basic sense of what strategic thinking is and what it is not. Examination of literature on strategic thinking does not lead to one common definition of strategic thinking. However, there are some identified common attributes of strategic thinking. Strategic thinking is built on a systems perspective, intent driven, hypothesis driven, intelligently opportunistic (capitalizing on new possibilities as the situation changes), and involves the ability to think in time (linking past, present, and future elements).

The confusion about the definition of strategic thinking is exacerbated by the confounded concepts of strategic thinking, strategic planning, strategy, and the strategic thinker. In addition to the lack of common definition of strategic thinking, Heracleous notes that there is no common definition of strategic planning or common understanding of the relationship between strategic thinking and strategic planning. Liedtka outlines several differences between strategic thinking and strategic planning that include reliance on systems thinking, the role of measurement and control, and a focus on the outcome (strategy) versus the process. For the purpose of this compendium, we have focused extensively on concepts related to strategic thinking (cognitive processes) and the strategic thinker (characteristics of a person). This work does not extensively address the concepts of strategy (outcome) or strategic planning (programmatic, analytical process). Strategic thinking in the military comes with unique challenges and opportunities. It is different than strategic thinking in the private sector.

Using Concept Mapping to Foster Adaptive Expertise Enhancing Teacher Metacognitive Learning to Improve Student Academic Performance【電子書籍】[ Greg S. Goodman ]

Metacognitive Approaches to Developing Oracy Developing Speaking and Listening with Young Children【

The acquisition of speech and language represent significant achievements for all children. These aspects of child development have received substantial attention in the research literature and a considerable body of theoretical knowledge exists to chart progress from infancy to maturity. Cross-cultural studies have identified the common purposes served by the acquisition of oral language by children, and the essential similarity in the sequence through which speech develops irrespective of geography and culture.

What is less clear is precisely ‘how’ children learn to say what they mean and ‘how’ teachers and parents can support and enhance the development of meaningful speech in their children. Until now, children’s speech has been underused as a means of promoting learning in the formal school setting. New requirements within the National Curriculum are trying to address this gap, but there remains a lack of clarity as to what this means for practice, and how it relates to the broad base of curricular objectives.

This book brings together a body of work, from different countries; it offers an improved understanding of how strategies for developing speaking and listening may impact metacognitive awareness, and raise standards of literacy and dialogic thinking for all children.

This book was previously published as a special issue of Early Child Development and Care.

Cooperative Learning and Metacognitive Instruction【電子書籍】[ Fanny Jimenez ]

Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject Pedagogy - General, grade: A (excellent), Indiana University (Instructional Systems Technology), course: Instructional Psychology, 24 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: INTRODUCTION There has been a lot of research concerning the problems of implementing new techniques and strategies into classroom instruction. The difficulties of innovation may be due to resistance to change, lack of congruence between teachers' beliefs and practices and several other factors. This does not sound very optimistic in terms of improving learning situations for students. However, there are some ways to enhance student performance that at first sight do not seem to be very complicated but nevertheless are quite effective without depending on the former mentioned barriers too much. The purpose of this synthesis paper is to present recent findings concerning two of those strategies, cooperative learning and metacognitive instruction, and critically discussing their effectiveness and applicability as well as their limitations and implications for future research. First, a short overview is given on the problem of implementing new techniques in classroom instruction and changing teachers' practices. This is done to provide a framework and consider the main constraints. Then, research on the two strategies is presented and discussed with regard to applicability and limitations. The main indicator of whether those strategies actually reach the student or not is student achievement as usual, even though it is certainly not the only important one and some other indicators are considered. Finally, a short summary and conclusion is given and implications for future research are considered.

Becoming a Metacognitive Teacher A Guide for Early and Preservice Teachers【電子書籍】[ Roya Q. Scales ]

How can early and preservice teachers master the complex practice of teaching? This clearly written, research-based guide shows how to successfully navigate coursework, build relationships with mentors, and negotiate fieldwork and student teaching while developing metacognitive thinking skills. These are skills that allow teachers to continuously reflect on instructional practices and adapt them to fit their own teaching context and their students’ diverse needs. Metacognitive teaching requires higher-level thought processes that, for teachers, include making connections among each segment of the teacher preparation program, as well as deciding how these experiences directly and effectively apply to their classrooms. The authors argue that this kind of support is needed early in the journey of a teacher if they are to succeed and remain in the classroom.

“To foster metacognitive thinking among our students, teachers must have sophisticated metacognitive skills themselves. This unique and well-grounded text demonstrates the critical role of metacognition in developing the craft of effective teaching for preservice and novice teachers."
ーWilliam Brozo, professor of literacy, School of Education, George Mason University

“Comprehensive and practical, this text provides an artful and thoughtful blend of strategies for prospective teachers' personal and professional development. He presents practical techniques and specific protocols for addressing metacognitive processes to effectively treat generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive?compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and major depression. Metacognitive Diversity An Interdisciplinary Approach【電子書籍】

Metacognition refers to our awareness of our own mental processes, such as perceiving, remembering, learning, and problem solving. It is a fascinating area of research for psychologists, neuroscientists, anthropologists, sociologists and philosophers. This book explores the variability of metacognitive skills across cultures, since a person's decision to allocate effort, motivation to learn, sense of being right or wrong in perceptions, memories, and other cognitive tasks depends on specific transmitted goals, norms, and values. Across nineteen chapters, a group of leading authors analyze the variable and universal features associated with these dimensions, drawing on cutting-edge evidence. Additionally, new domains of metacognitive variability are considered in this volume, including those generated by metacognition-oriented embodied practices (present in rituals and religious worship), and culture-specific lay theories about subjective uncertainty and knowledge regarding natural or supernatural entities. It also documents universal metacognitive features, such as children's earlier sensitivity to their own ignorance than to that of others, people's intuitive understanding of what counts as knowledge, and speakers' sensitivity to informational sources (independently of the way the information is linguistically expressed). The book is important reading for students and scholars in cognitive and cultural psychology, anthopology, developmental and social psychology, linguistics, and philosophy.

Metacognitive Interpersonal Therapy for Personality Disorders A treatment manual【電子書籍】[ Giancarlo Dimaggio ]

Patients with personality disorders need targeted treatments which are able to deal with the specific aspects of the core pathology and to tackle the challenges they present to the treatment clinicians. Such patients, however, are often difficult to engage, are prone to ruptures in the therapeutic alliance, and have difficulty adhering to a manualized treatment.

Giancarlo Dimaggio, Antonella Montano, Raffaele Popolo and Giampaolo Salvatore aim to change this, and have developed a practical and systematic manual for the clinician, using Metacognitive Interpersonal Therapy (MIT), and including detailed procedures for dealing with a range of personality disorders. The book is divided into two parts, Pathology, and Treatment, and provides precise instructions on how to move from the basic steps of forming an alliance, drafting a therapy contract and promoting self-reflections, to the more advanced steps of promoting change and helping the patient move toward health and adaptation.

With clinical examples, summaries of therapies, and excerpts of session transcripts, Metacognitive Interpersonal Therapy for Personality Disorders will be welcomed by psychotherapists, clinical psychologists and other mental health professionals involved in the treatment of personality disorders.

Metacognitive therapy is based on the principle that worry and rumination are universal processes leading to emotional disorder. These processes are linked to erroneous beliefs about thinking and unhelpful self-regulation strategies.

Metacognitive Therapy: Distinctive Features is an introduction to the theoretical foundations and therapeutic principles of metacognitive therapy. Divided into two sections, Theory and Practice and using thirty key points, the authors explore how metacognitive therapy can allow people to escape from repetitive thinking patterns that often lead to prolonged psychological distress.

This book is a valuable resource for both students and practitioners wishing to develop a basic understanding of metacognitive therapy and how it compares and contrasts with traditional forms of cognitive behavioural therapy.
