Optical Metamaterials: Qualitative Models Introduction to Nano-Optics and Optical Metamaterials【電子書籍】[ Arkadi Chipouline ]

This textbook bridges the gap between university courses on electrodynamics and the knowledge needed to successfully address the problem of electrodynamics of metamaterials. It appeals to both experimentalists and theoreticians who are interested in the physical basics of metamaterials and plasmonics. Focusing on qualitative fundamental treatment as opposed to quantitative numerical treatment, it covers the phenomena of artificial magnetization at high frequencies, and discusses homogenization procedures and the basics of quantum dynamics in detail. By considering different phenomena it creates a self-consistent qualitative picture to explain most observable phenomena. This allows readers to develop a better understanding of the concepts, and helps to create a conceptual approach, which is especially important in educational contexts. This clearly written book includes problems and solutions for each chapter, which can be used for seminars and homework, as well as qualitative models that are helpful to students.

Zero Index Metamaterials Trends and Applications【電子書籍】[ Nishant Shankhwar ]

This book presents the emerging regime of zero refractive index photonics, involving metamaterials that exhibit effectively zero refractive index. Metamaterials are artificial structures whose optical properties can be tailored at will. With metamaterials, intriguing and spellbinding phenomena like negative refraction and electromagnetic cloaking could be realized, which otherwise seem unnatural or straight out of science fiction. Zero index metamaterials are also seen as a means of boosting nonlinear properties and are believed to have strong prospects for being useful in nonlinear optical applications. In summary, this book highlights almost everything currently available on zero index metamaterials and is useful for professionally interested and motivated readers.

Metamaterials and Wave Control【電子書籍】[ Eric Lheurette ]

Since the concept was first proposed at the end of the 20th Century, metamaterials have been the subject of much research and discussion throughout the wave community. More than 10 years later, the number of related published articles is increasing significantly. On
the one hand, this success can be attributed to dreams of new physical objects which are the consequences of the singular properties of metamaterials. Among them, we can consider the examples of perfect lensing and invisibility cloaking. On other hand,
metamaterials also provide new tools for the design of well-known wave functions such as antennas for electromagnetic waves.
The goal of this book is to propose an overview of the concept of metamaterials as a perspective on a new practical tool for wave study
and engineering. This includes both the electromagnetic spectrum, from
microwave to optics, and the field of acoustic waves.

Contents

Overview of Microwave and Optical Metamaterial Technologies, Didier Lippens.

MetaLines: Transmission Line Approach for the Design of Metamaterial Devices, Bruno Sauviac.

Metamaterials for Non-Radiative Microwave Functions and Antennas, Divitha Seetharamdoo and Bruno Sauviac.

Toward New Prospects for Electromagnetic Compatibility, Divitha Seetharamdoo.

Dissipative Loss in Resonant Metamaterials, Philippe Tassin, Thomas Koschny, and Costas M. Geometric Control of Fracture and Topological Metamaterials【電子書籍】[ Noah Mitchell ]

This thesis reports a rare combination of experiment and theory on the role of geometry in materials science. It is built on two significant findings: that curvature can be used to guide crack paths in a predictive way, and that protected topological order can exist in amorphous materials. In each, the underlying geometry controls the elastic behavior of quasi-2D materials, enabling the control of crack propagation in elastic sheets and the control of unidirectional waves traveling at the boundary of metamaterials. The thesis examines the consequences of this geometric control in a range of materials spanning many orders of magnitude in length scale, from amorphous macroscopic networks and elastic continua to nanoscale lattices.

High Performance Tensegrity-Inspired Metamaterials and Structures【電子書籍】[ Anna Al Sabouni-Zawadzka ]

Following current trends toward development of novel materials and structures, this volume explores the concept of high-performance metamaterials and metastructures with extremal mechanical properties, inspired by tensegrity systems.

The idea of extremal materials is applied here to cellular tensegrity lattices of various scales. Tensegrity systems have numerous advantages: they are lightweight, have a high stiffness-to-mass ratio, are prone to structural control, can be applied in smart and adaptive systems, and exhibit unusual mechanical properties. This study is focused on tensegrity lattices, whose inner architecture resembles that of cellular metamaterials, but which are aimed at civil engineering applications in non-material scales. It proposes a methodology for investigation of extremal mechanical properties of such systems, based on discrete and continuum approaches, including the discussion on scale effects. It proves that, similarly to tensegrity-based metamaterials, tensegrity metastructures are able to exhibit extremal mechanical behaviour.

This book is directed to researchers and scientists working on metamaterials and tensegrity systems, developing energy-absorption solutions for building and transport industry. The findings described in this monograph can also be useful in other fields of applied sciences, such as civil engineering, robotics and material science.

Dynamic Equivalent Modeling of Acoustic Metamaterials Solving Problem of Noise and Vibration【電子書籍】[ Nansha Gao ]

This book derives physical models from basic principles, studies the effect of equivalent models on the dynamic characteristics of phononic crystals and acoustic metamaterials, and analyzes the physical mechanisms behind vibration and noise reduction. It first summarizes the research status of vibration and noise reduction, and research progress in phononic crystals and acoustic metamaterials. Based on this, one-dimensional periodic beam, two-dimensional thin plate with circular hole, and corresponding gradient structures are introduced, and their dynamic characteristics are discussed in detail. Therefore, different equivalent methods for different models are proposed through theoretical analysis, modal analysis and transmission rate analysis. Finally, a Helmholtz-type acoustic metamaterial, i.e. a multi-layer slotted tube acoustic metamaterial, is studied. Aiming at the low-frequency band gap of this model, a theoretical model for solving the inverse problem of acousto-electric analogue equivalent is proposed, and the effect of structural parameters on the low-frequency band gap is studied using this equivalent model.

This book closely revolves around how to conduct equivalent research on artificially fabricated periodic structures. The methods and conclusions presented in this book provide a new theoretical basis for the application of artificial woven periodic structures in the field of low-frequency vibration reduction and noise reduction and are also an innovation in the discipline of vibration and noise control. This book is suitable for undergraduate students, graduate students and teachers in vibration and noise majors in universities, and can also provide references for engineering and technical personnel in related fields.

The domain of metamaterials now covers many area of physics: electromagnetics, acoustics, mechanics, thermics, or even seismology. Huge literature is now available on the subject but the results are scattered. Although many ideas and possible applications have been proposed, which of these will emerge as a viable technology will only unfold with time.

This book covers the fundamental science behind metamaterials, from the physical, mathematical, and numerical points of view, focusing mainly on methods. It concentrates on electromagnetic waves, but would also be useful in studying other types of metamaterials. It presents the structure of Maxwell equations, discusses the homogenization theory in detail, and includes important problems on resonance. It has an entire section devoted to numerical methods (finite elements, Fourier modal methods, scattering theory), which aims to motivate a reader to implement them. The book is not written as a collection of independent chapters but as a textbook with a strong pedagogical flavor.
